go through the damn pyrenees, sure it's out of the way and into France, but fucking do it, it's summer there.

also, go to mandello and check out the guzzi factory plus the amazing mountain roads.

also, go to lecco and see the beautiful lake.

as an italifag, hmu for any info you need. I go there nearly once a year.

What was /dbt/'s first Motorcycle experience.
Mine was my dad showing some 20-somethings's how to do a burnout in front of our house when I was 3-5 years old.

3 years old, springtime. Dad is taking his late 70s 2smoke 250 road bike out of winter storage, cleaning carbs etc
Sits me on the tank, goes on test ride through town with me.
Repeat annually. Good times.

balaclavas are really useful, also wear a scarf and jacket. I usually find my nose runs all watery when I'm getting a lot of airflow through the gap in front of my chin on my helmet, so just try and close that up with clothing or those special products for it.
>>
>>17108639
Trying out a school friend's East German shifter moped on a dirt road and planting it in a bush. No one in my family has ever been involved in motorcycling so that's the earliest thing I have that involves more than just seeing bikes from a distance.

>selling my rs 125
>6 months

lolno I owned 2

get a great first bike itll last you a bit
>>
>>17108722
Yeah, but isn't the entire point of a first bike to find out what you actually like? I mean, you can tell yourself that you like bobbers long before you ever sit on a bike for the first time, but it doesn't mean that you'll like bobbers once you actually ride one.
>>
>>17108742
The entire point of a first bike is to be something that anyone regardless of preference can learn the basics of riding and motorcycle ergonomics on so that you have a baseline to compare any other bikes to in order to find out what you like.
>>
>>17108742
yes, obviously if you can tell yourself you don't like bobbers than that's not what you like so don't get one.
>>
>>17108755
>something that anyone regardless of preference can learn the basics of riding and motorcycle ergonomics on so that you have a baseline to compare any other bikes to in order to find out what you like
So a UJM?
>>
>>17108763
No, like a Hayabusa.
>>
>>17108763
While a UJM would fulfill your needs in that regard, most of them are pretty old and as such tend to require more work than, say a 10-15 (or even 20) year old standard like the GS 500, or better, the ER-5 or CB 500. As a result you would end up having to wrench more on the bike than actually riding it, which really isn't what your first bike should be about.
>>
>>17108778
Yeah, but didn't they manufacture some of them until recently? And aren't some of them actually being revived these days?
>>
>>17108742
Probably yeah.

I got a KLR650 as a first bike now I'm more confused as to what I want even more. Do I want a faster bike? A bike better off road? Do I want an upgraded KLR? Do I want a KLR competitor? Am I sexually attracted to men or women more? Do I own one general purpose bike or multiple bikes?

Honestly, if it's already had the usual shit taken care of it should be as reliable as most modern bikes unless there were serious design flaws.

I wouldn't have a problem buying a restored 70s bike.

>>
>>17108808
A shitton of bikes are better off-road than the KLR from marginally better (DR650) to moderately better (WR250).

Choice paralysis, I don't know what I want I just know the KLR is lacking somehow in what I want.

Also I cannot stand for unreliable or maintence intensive bikes so I'm strictly a Jap bike guy.

A powerful KLR would be ideal but even with expensive mods, its still not enough. Would an African Twin satisfy? Or is it too big and should I set my expectations lower to a smaller bore dual sport?

Yeah besides the innuendo I'm not real sure since every bike is a compromise.

I just know I don't want a cruiser because e I'm not hard gay and don't want a sportbike because its uncomfortable to ride and they are high strung and unreliable.
>>
>>17108863
sounds like you want a scrambler. Light offroad capability with power for the street. Okayish seat position, still fairly nimble.
>>
>>17108879
Why would he want a crippled adventure bike from 1950 instead of a double nigger or a wee strom?
>>
>>17108863
get a scrambler desert sled. it honestly sounds like this is the bike you want.

if more adventure-y, get a 90s 650cc Africa Twin. the v-strom sounds too heavy for what you want to do

Experienced the wonders of that a few years back while visiting my little brother in Fountain CO. Swung something like 90 degrees over the course of the day, from the low 80s to the 20s with blowing snow and then back up to the 50s. Oh yeah, and four people got struck by lighting, in the snow. Fuck mountains.
>>
>>17109182

Insurance is the same in Saskatchewan, theres only 1 agency and it's SGI, run by the Sask government.

Downside, motorcycle license costs $1500 to get ($500 every year for 3 years)

Upside, if somethings older than 30 years old its exempt from inspection, ever and only costs $22/m in insurance.

I now collect neck tubes off pre-1987 bikes for their delicious, delicious $22 vins.

Any enduro/dirtbike riders here?

I need price check on a plated 2006 KTM 525 EXC here in Colorado? It has 1877 miles/90 hours on it and looks pretty damn good from the pictures and description.

KBB and NADA have absurdly low valuations of all dirtbikes that weren't sold with a street title.
>>
Anyone here have a DR 650? Do you like it? Test rode a newer one today and quite like it myself, said I'd think about it for a day or two. I'd plan sell my CBR 600 and use the DR as my main bike because it seems so versatile and is more comfortable (I have a bad back and joints so sitting upright helps me a lot).

>>17110363
are you new to life or something?

>>
>>17110363
Eh riding felt natural, like riding a 400lb bicycle. Riding technique errors went away like kicking a leg out dirtbike style in turns, or letting off the throttle in a turn.

I fucked up controls starting off though. Accidently downshifting when I wanted to upshift, starting off from a stop in second and stalling it, multiple times at one stop. Not clicking up hard enough from 1st to 2nd and throttling in neutral, ect.

Can't say it was awkward but I made mistakes like that. You just have to read about proper technique then remember to apply it while riding. What I did anyways and I think I do okay.
>>
>>17110363
I have no idea. I'm an oldfag and I had been riding dirt bikes for since I was 10 and got my motorcycle license at 16. 14 years of street riding later and it's like breathing for me.

I feel bad for you anon.
I'm on medical leave for the remainder of the year so I get EI deposited every two weeks to cover 55% of my wages, the rest I gotta go fuck myself.
I just sold one of my trucks so pocketed $20K

Woke up the other day and asked myself how I was going to keep busy this summer. Moved in with my little brother and his fiance not too long ago since I'm getting ready to go to tradeschool..

No real bills, enough cash and inflow to relax.. Put a detachable sissybar and luggage rack on the dyna, floorboards and a quick detach windshield. Made my choice.

Decided I'm going to live on the road this year.

GF will be buying my 97 er5 for 1500 euros, feels good senpai. The dorso is pretty cheap. Dealer maintained and all that, ABS, some carbon fiber parts, arrow cans ad decat. Only 4500. The guy said we wanted 5000 but it needed to go.

Then, when I gave him my phone number, he sent me more pics of the bike and the maintenance records. I noticed his profile pic was of him, his wife, and a ~2 month old baby. I think that his forced him to sell the bike. No man goes from fanatic about bikes to "needing" to get rid of it. He's in midde management so money wouldn't be the problem

everyone i know on the apriliaforum just uses the fatduc from af1
it's basically a potentiometer
in th meantime remember to let it idle a bit to heat up and don't shift aggressively until you have the full 3 bars

you should've asked the owner if he replaced the pressure sensor
it's a catastrophic failure on our model years where the engine will eat through them

>>
>>17111140
Sure, they added more power but it's still the weakest superbike with the least torque.

The 5% lower weight doesn't mean all that much to me, all these bikes are balanced so well the only place I'd ever be able to feel it is like 15km/h and under.
>>
>>17111152
Worth checking out for sure. Unless it's blowing an incredible amount of smoke and everything else in the ad lines up it's still a good deal.

If you are concerned about the tiny difference that will make on long straights then you should be concerned about the much larger difference that weight will make for braking and turning.

If we're talking about a 5% difference in power with the same power:weight ratio? Yeah it's going to be tiny unless you're riding flat out for miles at a time.

Sure a pigfat 600 will smoke a race 400 once you get to a certain relatively easily achievable speed but this isn't anywhere near that extreme. Vmax is going to be reasonably close between the two and neither will be getting all that near it most of the time.

That certainly sounds interesting.

Isn't having your bike stolen an issue?

On most of South America anything that isn't a 125 draws a lot of attention.

Its eastern yurope they can't afford things like aftermarket cans, becuase theyre taxed to hell by their corrupt oligarchy.
>>
>>17111786
If you can afford something new enough to have a cancermuffler like that on it you can spare enough to make it look acceptable.
>>
>>17111783
That sucks. Mine were the cheapest in the store and are very comfortable.
>>

They typically use Harley engines, which are renowned for being gutless as fuck.
>>
Do they make something like a hard plastic insert that you can slip in a pair of boots that protects the ankle?

I noticed a lot of motorcycle boots are just workboots with ankle protection and thinner soles, only they cost 3 times as much.

Or they are Elven Leather High Boots Of Warding +3 that look ridiculous anywhere off a motorcycle peg and cost 4 times as much.

What part of South America? I was in Brazil and there were the usual Chinese cg125 clones I saw plenty of higher displacement machines too.

I wear these boots. They're comfortable, waterproof, and provide good ankle support.

Why are you kids doing it wrong?
>>
>>17112020
I don't mean ankle support like to keep your ankle from rolling when you hike, but hard armor to keep your malleoluses from being smashed apart on the pavement.

Which as far as I can tell is the only advantage motorcycle boots have over work or combat boots.
>>
>>17112051
Do combat boots have shin protection? Proper motorcycle boots will keep you from cracking your shin apart on the footpegs
>>
>>17111856
I was in Guatemala City for a week and I only saw three bikes >200cc the whole time. It was pretty comical seeing families of four riding 30 year old 125cc bikes.
>>
>>17108609
>>cracking your shin apart on the footpegs
How? Wouldn't you have to purposefully put your shin behind your peg before impact?
>>
>>17112111
I don't think it's wise to assume how one might fall in a crash.

The best boots all have shin protection to soften the blow of a footpeg.

>Which as far as I can tell is the only advantage motorcycle boots have over work or combat boots.
Walking boots are designed to support your angle against impacts from below, and keep the rest of your foot from flexing about.
Work boots are designed to protect from protrusions through the sole and from objects dropped directly onto the top of the boot.
Motorcycle boots are designed to restrain your ankle from rotating and flexing in any axis other than up/down (and then limit travel), but allow enough flax at the front for gear and brake lever feel. Soles are designed to be flexible rather than to take repeated impacts. Fastening is heavier duty and designed to avoid any trailing laces (usually by omitting laces entirely).
>>

>Soles are designed to be flexible rather than to take repeated impacts
My work boots have a more flexible sole than my bike boots.

My work boots are category S3, so not the lightest.
>>
You can bring touring tyres to the track; but they aren't going to perform as well as slicks.

You can make similar analogies with boots/shoes.
>>
>>17112250
You can wear crocks on a bike, but the air holes will make you go too fast
>>
>>17112249
So buy better motorbike boots.
>>
>>17112268
I bought my bike boots to be protective and comfy on my bike. Not to walk.
I bought my work boots to protect and be comfy to walk in.

They do their job as they're supposed to.
Why would I need a flexible sole on a bike boot?
>>
>>17112275
I don't even know what we're arguing about anymore. Just be safe m8
