If anyone is in need of a wheel, I highly recommend Renown. Wonderful quality and sharp looks.

I'm fitting it on a Momo 2008 hub.

Well, I can't say you will ever be a 3 or 5 series, even in a year, but if you buy that one you can at least own one.

335i is a good one. That one looks pretty clean, so the quite a few miles on the clock might account for the price... until you read the review saying it has been raped by rust.

I can't speak for DIY on E9x, but on E36 it is a cinch.

kinda old pic but it's alright. difference now it's tiny bit lower, manual swapped, and theres a heckspoiler

Ever since I swapped it the exhaust seems to droop in the middle since it isn't touching the trans hanger. This make the exhaust tips tap on the bumper every once and a while. kinda just ignore it for now. idk if i lost the transmission hanger part or what. i remember unbolting it vaguely

anyways was probably just going to wait until I buy the other midpipe (no cat) or have one made then figure out the hangers then.

Loving the E46 for the time being. It's only the 2.2 litre, but it's fun. Can't really see myself driving any other car even as I start making more money in the future.

It's also fairly easy to fix yourself too. Going to fix the infamous subframe cracks when I get home from work, or die tryin'.

And when I already have the rear parts out, why not replace the rusted exhaust? I can't argue for that apart from saving time and money short term. And the welder will also be at the table, the trunk stripped, so frame stiffening seems mandatory.

But winter is only 5-6 months away. I need a LSD, naturaly, but why stop there? Adjustable sway bar and camber-rod-things seems to make so much sense as well. And one day in the foreseeable future when I wrek the car into some ditch, it's just a matter of salvaging whatever parts I can, and start over again.

Owning a fun car I can actually afford to loose is absolutely halal.

I might buy an E21 tomorrow boys, 1982 E21, "mechanic's special", don't know what's wrong with it yet. I have a driveway, tools, and a dad that knows cars. What's it like working on them? I really want a project BMW to rebuild and call my own, and this one is flawed enough to be an affordable and fun project, but together enough that I don't have to get any bodywork or annoying shit done.

Selling my E39 540i because I love it too much and the EM PEE GEES are starting to cost too much. Plus I'm moving back to Europe from California in a year or two and I want something that I can take home. No fucking way I can feed a V8 in Yurop.
>>
>>17093806
Hey man, Hungari-anon that lives in Cali here. I currently own an E39 540i.

Basically, it's not easy to work on but it gives a fair return. The thing pulls, it's comfy, it looks good, feels good. As I mentioned in a previous comment (didn't read through the thread all the way before posting so sorry for the double post) I'm selling mine because I'm 20 and moving back to Europe soon, it wouldn't be worth taking it back with me and doing all the paperwork just to drown in gas prices, but if I had a good source of income locked down I totally would. It's an amazing car and I wouldn't see myself selling it if I was wealthier.

They're just well advertised claptrap. Unless your car is substantially modified and the stock cooling system is no longer sufficient, you have no need for an $1,100 radiator and fan "kit." Your car is in all likelihood nearly stock given what I've seen in this thread, you may as well literally flush your money down the toilet because any cooling issues you are having are because your stock shit needs to be maintained.

Thinking about buying a late model E36 M3 with around 100k miles give or take, for around $10-12k.
Would this be a reliable daily driver that wont bankrupt me or have me constantly chasing and fixing little problems? This would be a US spec M.

Also, there's a 1JZ swap E36 M3 near me that I'd love to own but feel like it wouldn't be dependable. Anyone have any experience on this type of stuff, DDing engine swaps etc?

Aside for the heavy steering due to the weight, she was quite able on the twisties. Those super sized brakes are also stupid good, stops that train like a wall.

Mech fan delete, & silicon hoses are a much better choice for cooling system reliability. I shit you not the only thing you have to worry about on e36 radiators is plastic cracking, for hich which mishimoto makes a inexpensive all aluminum radiator.

I see E46s all the time on the road so I assume they're pretty good DDs. The 3 series is meant for that kind of thing anyway.
>>
>>17110502
>>17110474
Is there much in the way of aftermarket or modding support for them? I kind of want to do a bit of tinkering with it, at the very least, especially if there's some popular forced induction conversions available.

E36s have the most aftermarket but the E46 is in at a close second.

The E46 is the European equivalent to the MK4 Supra. Aftermarket is about comparable, that is extremely large.
Never owned a 3 series myself but the tech in them is mostly similar to 5 series tech if not a bit watered down. I'd wager them as extremely reliable cars if proper care is taken.

Sounds good.

Is it relatively commonplace to go with a supercharger or turbocharger for increasing engine performance, or are there some 'favorite' engines that get swapped in for easy power gains?
>>
anyone have a 'guide' or something for pulling the a/c bits and sound deadening/insulation off under the dash?

Looked online for stripping e30 guides but they all stop after getting the dash off and don't go into the insulation/sound deadening or the heater core/air conditioning bits (the a/c on mine is already disconnected/degassed but the lines to engine bay and control bits etc. are all still there).

Also a cheap and easy way to gain power if you have the M52 engine is to swap the intake manifold for the one from M50. Pic related stolen from some bimmer forum. You lose max torque but gain a lot of power in the high rev range.

Can someone redpill me on the E34 and the E39 ?

A friend of mine got a rustbucket of an E39 520d but after some work done to it it's actually pretty gud. And it has been surprisingly reliable so far.

Would you guys recommend an E34 or an E39 ?
I just need a big, reliable cruiser.
I narrowed it down to the E34 520i and 518i, and the E39 520i or 520d ( because taxes and because i'm a pretty slow driver ).
The E34 would start out as a project that will require considerable work and updating, whereas the E39 would be good to go right of the bat.

Which one would you pick and why ?
I also do a fair ammount of city driving so a diesel is not so good for me.
>>
>>17112088
Stay away from the 518. Too underpowered for a E34. Is the E34 with the M20 or M50 engine? Both are nigh indestructible but the M50 being a bit more modern is a little easier to maintain. The M20 timing is by beöt while the M50 is chain.

Personally I'd go with the E34 as they're a lot more simpler, reliable and cheaper.
The E39 is a looker too and not a bad car in any way or shape, probably a lot nicer to drive than the old E34 too, but I personally like the more agressive stylings of the E34.

I'd like to own an E39 someday too, they're such beautiful looking cars.

>>17112107

So your pick would be the M50 148bhp 520i E34 ?

My first impressions of the E39 were those of a vast cruiser rather than a agile sports car. My friend's 520d was geared more towards comfort rather than sport ( until he modified the suspension ).
The steering is abit heavy ( compared to VW's steering-for-everyone ) but you would get used to it.
No real issues in winter, great fuel consumption ( 50 mpg highway ) on cruise control, but I can't stand the tractor noise of the diesel engine.

My current car does 30 mpg city, do u happen to know the fuel consumption on a E34 520i ? If it's hovering around the 30 mpg mark, then I can easily get used to it.

Much thanks !
>>
>>17112132
Can't comment on empeegees because yuropoor but my M50 powered E34 520 got around 7 litres for 100km or so when cruising down the highways at a steady speed. The 520 ain't all that fuel hungry, they're quite light to drive. Not fast in any way but they can keep up with other traffic easily.

I can't comment on the diesel engines, but they're "decent" from what I've heard.

Personally I'd go with the M50 powered E34 525 or E39 528 for decent power and fuel economy balance. They're a bit thirstier but the increase in power is nice.

There is also the issue of the taxes which limits me to the 520i really...

Sorry, don't really remember city driving consumption as I drive mostly these which are at 30l/100km in the city, at best.
I doubt city economy goes over 15 litres in the 520i though, especially if it's a manual. I believe 11l is about average for these things. They are a bit on the larger side and are luxury cars after all.

i find the seat in my e36 hard to get right too, found this on a forum a little while back and saved it;

> 1. While sitting, step on the brake as hard as u can, ur knees should bend slightly when the brakes are fully depressed. This give you the most braking power in an emergency.

> 2. Then start adjusting the seat height until there's ~3 fingers - a fist gap between ur head and the roof.

> 3. Adjust the seat back until ur rists are resting on the steering wheel with the arm fully extended, and such that when u turn the steering wheel left to right, only ur shoulders move, NOT ur upper body.

General things to watch for when buying an E34 ? Or just check that it's running and that the chassis is not rusted ?
I'm interested in a project-car resto-mod sort of thing so most of the things would get thrown out anyway...
Oh and one more thing..Did the E34 get at some point electric windows ( front and/or back ) ? Installing power windows is a bitch on most cars.

Much thanks
>>
>>17117013
I've never seen an E34 without electric windows all around. The only one that didn't have electric windows was the 518 since it was absolute base model, 518s are also incredibly rare since they were in Europe only. Every other model had them as standard.

Thanks guys !

I'm aware that this is a 25 year old car by now ( a helpful anon steered me towards the M50TU engine ) so just about everything will need replacing and repairing.
As an europeasant, the 520i M50TU seems to be the best option for me. My total budget hovers around 7k euros for starters ( just to get it going )...with 2k euros the car that would leave me with around 5k for basic repairs to get it rolling...
I do see alot of 520i 24v for more or less 1.000 euros tho
>>
>>17117031
For 2 grand you can get a pretty god damn well kept 520 E34, my previous one was for 600 yuropbucks with 590k on the clock. The mileage was only numbers on the tach, thing was pristine otherwise and ran like a champ.

Also, do note that the M50TU engines come with VANOS which is an additional maintenance point. They aren't a problem really but if you want a retard proof car, look for a 1991 520 E34. In 1990 they replaced the M20 engine with the M50 and in 1992 they upgraded the M50 with VANOS. 1991 models are 100% surely non-VANOS models unless they've been tampered with.
VANOS is BMWs variable valve timing system, roughly put it's their VTEC.
>>
>>17117031
Damn what country are you in? Those are some bizarre prices. I got a mint condition 530i with the M30 engine for less than 2k euros.
>>
>>17117031
honestly just go for the 525i at least
same fuel consumption as the 520i but at least it's not as awfuly slow

i've heard about the VANOS issues with single and double VANOS systems. And about non-vanos models.
Does this VANOS system get expensive ?
My monthly income ( excluding gf's ridiculous income ) is roughly around ~1.000 euros/month...it is too low in order to maintain an E34 ?

>>17117061
520i is more expensive because the 530i has 10x bigger anual road tax.

>>17117096
Taxes on a 525i are not THAT big ~250 euros/year but i'm afraid of a big ass fuel consumption..
i wouldn't want to go much higher than 10-12L/100km city - it would be a fairly low mileage car because we got a Fiesta now that does all the hard work and all the hauling
>>
>>17117096
520 was his choice due to taxes.

>>17117103
The taxes here are straight fucked. My 520 E34 had higher taxes than my E32 and E38 750's combined.
>>
>>17117141
Vanos is not really an issue, it's not like they break every other day. They're fairly reliable systems, they do get a bit noisy as time goes by, thus the maintenance.
I doubt the M50TU would be any more expensive to maintain than a regular M50, but the lack of VANOS is one less failure/maintenance point in the car.
Not trying to scare you or anything though, VANOS maintenance is fairly simple, I doubt it requires any specific scills.

Friend of mine bought his E39 520d at age 23 and wanted to insure it on his name and he got a quote for 1100 euros/year. Now his insurance is 400 euros/year, aged 26

>>17117160
What about the 525i ? is it the same M50 engine ?
>>
>>17117166
The 520 and 525 are the same car and same engine aside for displacement.
They started in the late 80's with the OHC M20 which was replaced in 1989/90 with the M50 for the 520 and in 91 for the 525.
The M50 was modernized into the M50TU in late 1992 for both the 520 and 525.

The 1989 year E34 is a bit iffy as it was offered with both the old M20 and the new M50 at the same time for a short while.
You can easily tell the difference between the OHC M20 and DOHC M50 engines though from the intake manifold which is sliverish iron in the M20 and black plastic in the M50. The M50 also has a more modern appearance and should have a plastic cover.
>>
>>17117206

One final question : How does the M50 engine deal with the LPG modification ? This would make the fuel consumption reasonable even on the 525i model
>>
>>17117227
>>17117141
If taxes is not a problem definitely go for the 525i
The fuel consumption difference between 520 and 525 is around 0.5 liters for both city and highway driving yet the power difference is big and resale value will be much better.
M50's do work well with LPG systems too
Vanos is not a big issue as the car can run perfectly fine with a fucked vanos
>>
>>17117227
I don't think the M50's really mind, heard that it's been done and that people drive them with LPG. Doubt there would be any issues with the LPG conversion. Never seen one myself though. I do know that the 518 was sold with some sort of LPG system factory installed, they were called 518g's and are rarer than an M5.
>>
>>17117261
>>17117245

LPG conversion is popular in these parts, especially with older Mercs with petrol engines ( either the 1.8L engines or the 2.4L engines ). Not so many BMWs tho.
Alot of people do LPG conversions on bigger petrol engines.

Had a look at E34 525i, most of the cars in decent condition are 3.500-4.000 euros so this bumps the price abit. The 520i is 1500-2500 euros.

I have a decent budget and I've been looking at special snowflake cars lately. What things do I need to know about the E23? Also the E31 too while I'm here
>>
>>17124290
Early E23's were carbed and quite archaic. Later ones stepped their game up, the 745 even came with a delicious trbocharged M30.

Watch out for the automatics, the ZF 4HP22 has A clutch pack seal issues, leaving it running while in P or N fries the clutches. This problem exists in the E30, 32 and 34 too.
The M30's while durable have some camshaft oiltube issues due to age, the banjo bolts might have come loose so those should be checked too.

Suggestions for exhausts on an E30 325i? Feel like i might just go header ->2 pipes -> y -> some muffler

I drove my friend's 2010 X3 on a road trip a few years ago. It drives like you'd expect a 4,000lb 3 series with an extra foot of height to drive. Not bad for an SUV, but not "good." If you want a 7 as a second car, look at the E32. The E32 wiring harness makes NASA shuttles shame in comparison but they're still a lot more reliable and idiot proof than the E38, not that the E38 is a bad car in any way or shape, but parts are more plentiful for the E32 and they're easier to service due to being older in design.

Because she basically is. The E32 and E34 were designed somewhat parallel, the E34 taking up on her big sister. THe grilles for example are narrow on the "small" 7's and wide on the "big" sevens.
E34 somewhat shares this trait, the older, smaller E34's had a narrow grill while the V8 E34's had a wider grille.

Here we have a, most probably a 730 E32 next to a V8 E34.

>>17135099
The seven series was the very epitome of luxury back in the day. Sure they aren't anything special nowadays as even the most basic shitbox corolla has at least the same options if not more than the old E32, but what the modern shitboxes will never have is that ride quality and class plus that abundance of cabin space.

Well fuck :(. Tell your mom I said, "Hi" though.
I'll miss the orange glow of the dash.
I'll come back if I end up with another shitbox bmw.
Ciao.

I never liked the wide grill E34 much, the narrow one was the best.

In 1988 BMW experimented with different suspension setups on the 5 series in a bid to find the most comfortable yet the most sporty setup.
The anti-gravity suspension showed promise but was ultimately a disaster as the car took off and entered a sub-orbital trajectory. The test ended up as fatal because >LOL BMW HVAC VALVES
The test driver froze to death due to no heat coming into the cabin. Fucking HVAC.

thanks anon, I'm really proud of it.
Also do you guys know if I should flush the transmission? I have no idea if it has ever been done, it is at 260.000 KM (about 160k miles). My local mechanic is advising against it because if it's never been done then it could cause more harm than good.
>>
>>17135326
Apparently BMW transmissions don't like flushing, but rather cycling the oil.
>>
>>17135349
So just draining and refilling the oil will be enough? arent the ZF transmissions the same as audi and mercedes ?
>>
>>17135364
They are, but I've heard of some horror stories about flushing ZFs. Apparently the proper procedure is to drain out the old, fill it, run it for a while then fill some more.
>>
>>17135372
Thanks anon, I'll keep that in mind when I bring her over to the shop the next time.

nah, I live in charleston.
/bmw/ pls no bully, i lied, it's not stock at all
>>
Hold me /bmw/ I don't know what to do anymore. Bought the 750 E38, thinking I could manage hust like I did with my E32 750.
Apparently the transmission is fucked but they didn't really say how. Am a bit suspicious.
Should I just buy a spare transmission, drop the current one and hope for the best.

They did say that they couldn't read the fault codes as "broken transmission " is interfering.
>>
>>17135520
what happened to your current transmission
>>

Trans Failsafe Prog. Besides that I have no idea.
Seems to be slipping on drive till 2700rpm then THUNK it slams into 5th gear. Only 5th works forwards, R works too.

You mean like pic related?
That's called alcantara, a very nice material, expensive too.

I'm pretty sure it needs to be cleaned with a steam cleaner, but you'd do well to Google that bit.

my e60 tranny went into failsafe mode because of very old oil and it had lost 1 liter of oil
also had rough shifts
changed oil, runs good now
>>
>>17136230
Changed oils too and it didn't help at all.
Filtran filter with ZF Lifeguard 5.

Yummy.

That looks nice but it's not what I meant.
I mean the roof (hemel) is all black and really tight and black. It really suits the interior :) I heard sagging of the roof was quite common.
>>
>>17135399
You could tell by the roll cage.

Looks very nice!

What do you think of this?

My BMW shakes at +70 mph, especially when I let off of the gas. I had the control arms replaced and the tires aligned but it still shakes, just not as violently as before. What could be causing this?
