> I’ve attended FFMC protests. When I lived in Lille, hundreds of bikers gathered to object to a new type of paint used in road markings (it was too slippery when wet). They’re remarkably well organized. They’d probably be derided here as “professional protesters.” This recent round of Paris protests included a big Sprinter-type van outfitted with loudspeakers, decorated with two huge posters by popular French cartoonist Stéphane Deteindre, whose comic strip “Joe Bar Team” appears in Moto magazine. Under the drawing was the slogan “les vielles se rebellent” — the oldsters are rebelling.
> What is most striking about FFMC protests, from an American motorcyclist’s perspective, is that these gatherings bring all kinds of riders together. This latest video is typical. You’ll see sport bikes and cruisers, scooters and trail bikes, naked musclebikes, adventure bikes… pretty much the full gamut. Where would you ever find as diverse a group of machines and riders here in the United States? Harley riders barely deign to acknowledge metric cruisers. Sport bike riders don’t even notice scooter riders. It’s rare for a street rider to express much concern for issues like off-road access to public lands. Shit, Ducati riders don’t even like each other. I always admired (and envied) the FFMC’s ability to bring out every kind of rider, even if the issue they were protesting only affected a subset of motorcyclists.

Exploding glocks, deagle brand deagles, baby killing ak47s, and bolt action hunting rifles all have the same drawbacks in societal perception, just to different degrees. My bike is literally incapable of doing the things that make people mad about Harleys and Peters (although at a glance it looks enough like the latter to get grouped with them but that's not the point right now). It would be like trying to get BB guns and laser tag in the gun lobby. Same with Harleyfags and off road trails. (why is why the lobby for those is made up of bikes, quads, side by sides, and snowmobiles, and not fucking road bikes)

The no helmet fags are closest to no seatbelt fags.
Loudpipe cunts are loudpipe cunts whether they're on a bike, in a truck, or a ricer.

Are you really this retarded? It isn't about seeing the same, it's about them being functionally the same to the extent that it matters to a normal person. Nobody thinks "wow I'd feel totally okay having a Moist Nugget pointed at me instead of an assault rifle". The public's primary concern with firearms is not range, accuracy, rate of fire, or capacity, it's potentially fatal projectiles coming out the end.

The public's primary, secondary, or tertiary concern with motorcycles is not two wheel vehicles that propel themselves, or anything else inherent to bikes until you get to the guy bitching about the societal cost of hospitalizing exposed vehicle operators. Nobody's going "I wish I could ban scooters but I guess for now I'll just ban liter bikes so it's easier to get support", these aren't common ground issues no matter how much you want to be part of some gay fraternity. If the government is doing something that really does affect all kinds of two wheeled vehicles, then all kinds of two wheeled vehicle people will care together.

Do you have any suggestions for extending riding endurance/comfort? I've got an FZ-07 and it's definitely not made for touring or endurance riding, but I want to go on a fairly long trip without taking much time.

In a few months I'll be moving from OR to CA. I'd like to ride my bike down there while the girlfriend takes the car, but I don't know if I can do 940 miles on this little bike. If I can't ride it down I guess I'll have to get it shipped for me, which I don't like.

Any suggestions?

for what it's worth, I'm the OP, and I am not calling you dumb. kind of misses the point of coalition-building.

>Nobody's going "I wish I could ban scooters but I guess for now I'll just ban liter bikes so it's easier to get support",
Not yet. But yes, on net I am definitely glad that there is no bike control movement.

>If the government is doing something that really does affect all kinds of two wheeled vehicles, then all kinds of two wheeled vehicle people will care together.
Exactly, and while I'd hate to see our fun ruined by the got damn fedral gubmint, we'd be a better community for having a common enemy. See also >>17082411. And I think we'd be better off being organized and prepared before the fur started flying. Any tips for becoming less of a pussy? The longest ride I went on without breaks was about two hours, and my butt definitely felt it towards the end. I found myself moving around towards the two hour mark trying to find a comfy spot.

I can do 12 hours in one shot in a car with no problem, but I've never tried it on a bike. I imagine it being more demanding.

Maybe I should just cut the trip in two days and sleep in Redding or something. Thoughts?

I'm torn on Indians. On one hand I love almost everything about those bikes. On the other hand I hate how every single one seems to have the "trailing" fenders, for lack of a better word. I don't like how the fenders always sort of sweep backward at the rear of the fender, almost as if it's being dragged back by speed or something.

It's bigger than any pocket or weatherproof mount that isn't designed for a tablet (which would be in the way) and while technically I could clamp it on to the bars it would take up a silly amount of real estate inside the fairing and weigh a ton. Like even on the steering head it's too wide to fit between the fork bolts so it would have to sit way up high and be retarded and annoying.

i posted on sunday asking about starter cruisers and some guy recommended the scout sixty. after doing a bit more reading i think i really like the bike but i had a few more questions.

what condition did you get yours in for $6400? i can afford one new and it's dawning on me that the <$5k selection is a little limited but i'd rather not spend 9k when i don't have to.

what's the likelihood i'll regret not getting a used rebel or something? i'm not getting the bike exclusively for fun and i expect that while i'd want to keep the indian as long as it'll run i might just end up replacing a shit bike sooner or later and losing money overall.

The scout sixty is a little expensive, the lack of mid controls makes low speed maneuvers more difficult to learn.
But I love my scout sixty, im a sucker for the styling and the red paint.

The power band is nice, you cant get into trouble unless you break 5k.

Id really recomend a used Yamaha bolt, or one of the new Rebel 500s.

Hey I'm the guy with the scout sixty. I got a 2016 with 2200 miles on it. I'm pretty good at talking people down on prices, but they were asking 8 for it. Talked them down from the "out the door" cost so they took from their asking price for tax tag and title

Yee argue this one, not the sales price. I managed to get one dealer down to 7600 from 8800 otd on a new 2015 fz09, another to 7500. The second one was easy though, I literally just phoned and told them if they could beat the first dealer I would show up with cash that day, and they phoned me back 15 minutes later and told me to come pick it up.

Q3s are about a 50% track 50% twisties tyre, you probably won't need anything that extreme unless you're riding really really really hard on the road so I'd look around maybe at S/T tyres and such too. I understand preferring sport tyres though.
>>
Fuck. Why does everything have to be so difficult.
Military so I was told I have to take MSF course. One on base is constantly full, so I said fuckit and paid for the one in town.
Have to obtain CO license cause that's the only way I can get the endorsement, cause my state doesn't take the CO course cert, plus I'd have to physically show up to there DMV.
But CO DMV says the want my birth cert, which is out of state, then they want 2 proofs of residence, which seems to be rather difficult cause I live in barracks but I don't receive any mail here cause it was easier to set up a UPS box than deal with the postal service.
Every time I think I'm finally gonna be able to ride, life slaps me in the face and says fuck you.
>>
>>17085956

>>
>>17085932
1-2% chance of death is still relatively high.
>>
>>17085982
Once you get the hang of street riding you realize it's not much more different than driving a car.

The only difference is that if you get into a crash you're more likely to die. That's pretty much it.
>>
>>17085995
Relative to what, not dying? It's not like it's 1-2% compared to 0%, there are many things that'll kill you far before a bike that both compound and are unavoidable. I'm in no way saying bikes are safe but the risks are nothing when you consider things on a large scale
>>
>>17085962
You can ride really hard on sport touring tyres these days, like proper lean angles and do track days on them, so I wouldn't worry about that, if you feel like sporty tyres are gonna give you a bit of confidence and prefer the feel ( I certainly do) go ahead, every time with sport touring tyres i feel like they're up to the task but I don't love them and I'm not excited to get a fresh set.

I believe bridgestone S21s are the current champs of performance to longevity in sport tyre world but I can't find any owner reports of mileage figures to substantiate that claim.
>>
>>17086003
When I see I've ridden on streets, I haven't gone above 35 or so on them. What I'm worried about is some stupid unavoidable obstacle or just making some potato decision, I know other drivers are the biggest problem however even when I drive I'm always paying attention to them.
>>
>>17085992
Shit mine is $230 and that's a weekday.
But I asked about the reg and they said that wouldn't work. And I never changed my address at the post office. Kinda hoping they'll take my insurance as proof. I have a letter from the irs that would work except the irs fucked the numbers and put #129 instead of 192.
>>
>>17086016
Will look into it, but a general question I have is, I'm looking at tire sizing atm, stock drzSM sizes are 120/70 fron 140/70 rear, what sizes should I get, should I stick with the stock sizing and go 120/140 70 or is there a better option? I thought most sumo's use 160 rear
>>
>>17086018
That's what I mean.

People hit unavoidable obstacles or make potato decisions in cars too, all the time.

The difference is they're more likely to kill you on a bike.
Not guaranteed to kill you, but the ante is certainly upped when riding a motorcycle.

My number one tip is to watch as many motorcycle crash videos as you can. It sounds morose, but it lets you identify and experience problem situations beforehand without having to endure them yourself.
>>
>>17086018
>other drivers are the biggest problem
I read this a lot and don't really believe there's much merit to it. It just seems like a common way of passing the blame. The biggest risk to most riders is not knowing how to ride. Even if half of accidents are caused by car drivers violating your right of way, it's typically something that could have been prevented by knowing how to ride properly and avoid a wreck.
>>
>>17086036
I know, I'm agreeing and have been watching videos both to see in a normal crash (not cherrypicked fatality crashes) how well the person fares and how stupid they were being
>>17086040
At the end of the day it's their fault but you're the dead one. Ideally they should be responsible, realistically you are and I agree entirely.
>>
>>17086035
a lot of sumos it's a stretch to put a 160 on and the chain scrapes on the edge of the tyre lol.

I would look on dr-z forums about using a 160 because I can't really help you there.

They make a diablo rosso III in 150 so that could be an option though.
>>
>>17086035
Stick with stock sizes or close to them. Not only will you get worse handling from cramming on wider tires, but you will experience clearance issues too. The stupid wide front tire on the DR-Z400SM already has issues with packing mud up into the fork guards if you ever ride through mud. Any wider will make it worse. A 160 rear tire will usually give you chain rub issues too. A 150 will most likely fit fine.
>>
>>17086059
>>17086046
Gotcha, thanks a ton guys.

See a few 160 tires that would fit without clearance issues on some forum posts, but I'd prolly go 150, gonna stick with 120 front

>>17086096
I'm not disagreeing, what I'm saying is the average driver is retarded and pays no attention, while they would be at fault (assuming the motorcylist was riding reasonably) for shit like turning left in front of bikes, it's a stupid mindset for the motorcylist to not take preventative measures.

Squids being squids is another matter entirely (and also responsibly for this 6-7% gap)
>>
>>17086094
Get the 650 instead
>>
>>17085932
We all gotta die someday anon, also those numbers are greatly inflated by people who don't wear helmets, I know lots of people who've been in accidents, some of them horrific and months in the hospital ones, the only ones who are dead weren't wearing a helmet. The difference a helmet makes is incredible, crashing without gear will put you in the hospital, crashing without a helmet will put you in the morgue.
>>
>>17086100
>>17086114
150 is fine. I had a 150 pilot power on my dry when I still had the supermoto setup. I'm just saying there's no need to cram a bigger tire than necessary on there.
Wouldn't recommend a pilot power though. They are very short lived. I got less than 4K miles out of my rear.

A pilot road 4 is a popular tire for street bikes, and available in a 150. That's what I would get.

Mine fits me really well stock the seat is great.

The only thing I would change is the front fork spring, youll notice that the front dives pretty bad when grabbing alot of front brake.

Only one company sells a progressive spring that I could find, I havent gotten around to swapping it out.

Youll notice some wobbling over 80mph, the springs will fix that too.

The only other thing you really need to do is make sure youve got the new starter, guess they put out a bad design so they redesigned it and assigned ot a new part number
