It is personal preference. There's no law requiring you to wear anything but a helmet, if that law is even in place.

It's personal preference, but when it is 90+ out I hate wearing gear. It's too hot for me.
>>
>>17017572
You need gear if you're a retard on a sportbike driving too fast and/or lane splitting through moving traffic.

No one needs gear in normal traffic while commuting like a normal person.
Unless it's raining.

By gear I mean pants/jacket/gloves.
Always wear your helmet.
>>

that is commuting like a normal person lol.

>>
>>17017606
Nope. Just last week I passed a retard who somehow hit a car hard enough to leave a hole bigger than most car crashes I've seen do.
This was during a nigh-gridlock traffic jam, with cars moving 10kph if they're lucky.

Retards don't understand that people in cars can't see them approaching, and you can barely hear a bike when you're in front of it.

How do you guys recommend prioritizing track time relative to instruction, and buying capital relative to rents? IOW, in order from highest to lowest fixed costs and lowest to highest cost per lap time:
>buy leathers and either track my one bike or get another bike (and cheap hauler??) to track
>cheap supermoto trackdays with rented bike and gear
>dirt school for road riders--American Supercamp, etc.
>California Superbike School/Reg Pridmore CLASS

Discuss.

So dbt I'm in the market for some riding boots or shoes.

Undecided if I wanna buy full race boots or just some riding shoes. Full boots will give better protection for sure.

That's how i learned first-come, first-served.
In any interaction it is so much more likely for someone to change mind or forget the thing even for years, than it is to actually go trough as planned.
Only a handful of people can really be trusted with anything. Most others are self entitled hypocrites where it will always be your fault.
>>
>>17017819
Well I didn't snap my ankle in sneakers when I crashed, but I did twist it pretty good. So anything I buy will be better that what I currently use. The shifter is starter to kill my sneaker though so I need to get something
>>
>>17017819
How do they hold up. Pretty good build or do they fall apart quickly
>>
>>17017759
I don't track days or full leathers, but I'd go track first to see where you stand skill-wise then look for classes, and buy leathers. No idea on the trailer though
>>
>>17017810

With boots, keep in mind it isn't just the actual protection from armour or leather etc, it's that any decent boot will include a measure of lateral support around the ankle that aims to prevent excessive force snapping your ankle. I mostly wear a pair of riding shoes and riding jeans, because I don't like how the boot feels on my bare leg. I use full boots on the outside of my leathers for full days riding, shoes for commuting and Uni.

If your main use is riding as a hobby instead of your main transport, I'd personally recommend boots. Your call though, and anything bike focused is better than sneakers.
>>
>>17017848
I've had them for about a year and one minor crash and they're holding up well so far. Only problem with them is there's a pad over your left big toe, I guess to pad when up shifting but unless you have small feet or keep your feet back on the pegs it's not actually on the shifter, so it just makes the toe box tight.
>>
>>17017851
yeh. I guess my worry about that is that I'll
>ride to track day
>crash
>have fun getting home lol
>>
>>17017854
I mostly ride casually with a few friends or commute to work when it's not raining. Only track near me I'd a drag stip. I think they do short track racing sometimes. I know they do have scca in the parking lot for cars.

If I ever take it to a real track I would spring for full leathers and boots. Mostly looking for a casual riding/commuting shoe
>>
>>17017882

https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/tcx-x-ride-wp-boots

That's what I bought. I guess I'd recommend them, but I've never tried any other riding shoes. Have worn them around and about for a day at Philip Island for the MotoGP and they were about as comfortable as expected for anything not specifically designed as trainers or whatever. I bought them because I wanted a black, waterproof, relatively bland looking shoe that still offered a bit of protection. If you don't ride in the rain, maybe look for something with a bit of ventilation depending on the average temps in your area?

You guys love doing work for other people and answering their dumb questions right? Currently looking to buy my second bike and I really want something with two round headlights. Currently looking at XTZ750s. The only problem is that I really dislike their color & decals since they are super faded by now.

So do I have other options for that bugeye look that are worth looking into or do I just have to figure out how to make a old Tenere not look old & faded.

There are some truly legendary riders on the road every now and again. My father told me a story last night of him being outpaced by a 70 year old man on a Vincent Black Shadow when he was on his GPz600r, turns out the old dude used to race that bike in the '50s.

Phoenix anon here, you're in for a fucking treat.

You'd better buy yourself a shemagh and some water bottles. Soak it completely in water and wrap it around your neck and shoulders and you get a nice evaporative cooling effect.

You'll need to stop and re-soak pretty frequently though, so plan on stopping at a lot of gas stations, going into the bathroom and soaking all your clothes or bring plenty of spare water.

Fortunately it's not 110+ yet. When it is you can go from being completely soaked to bone dry in ~15 minutes at speed.

Brutal. I did a ~180 mile right through the hottest part of the day on a 230cc bike in August once, from Tucson up to some lakes North of Phoenix. It was about 115.

If possible, time your ride so you're putting on miles at night. If not, take that advice seriously. It works really well, to the point where it feels almost like you have cool A/C blowing on your face up through your helmet.

If you just try to tough it out you're going to be at serious risk of hyperthermia, heat stroke, dehydration, and death. Plenty of people die every year here just because they didn't take the heat seriously enough.

Looks like a fun bike. Trying to convince my wife to buy something like it, maybe a DRZ400 as her second bike. She just started riding this month, bought a TW200 to learn on.

My 650L is starting to need some serious TLC. Bought it with less than 2000 miles and it's at 20k (hard miles) now, so it's about that time. Recently started getting it fixed back up.

>New chain and sprockets.
>New front and rear breaks.
>Full carb cleaning.

I've got a new set of Conti TKC80 on the way, and it needs to go into the shop to get the swingarm bolt driven out and new bearings. I also ordered a set of side racks from PMracks to make carrying my camping gear a little easier. The stock exhaust is about due for replacement too, undecided on what I'm going to buy. Most of the decent trails near me are still snowed under / gated (And won't be opened until late may or june). Before the last snow storm we went around a gate and ended up needing to huck the bikes over fallen trees, which while fun, was super tiring. I'll gonna have to add a collapsible saw to my kit to be able to clear out some of those trees.

I tried to force it and attempted to ride with my buddy on one snowy 2 tire track and quickly found out how quickly the bike wants to flop over in any level of snow about an inch or so. After the snow melts it'll be pure mud for a while. I'm so pumped for this riding season, it's gonna be awesome.

Is it possible to track down a motorcycle you have literally no information on? I would love to track down my Uncle's bike, try and figure out what ever happened to it after he died. My mom thinks his girlfriend at the time probably sold it (she was reportedly kindof a bitch).

I could probably try to find another photo of the bike, possibly with the Michigan plates. Would it be possible to track its general location or who it was eventually sold to? What info would I probably need other than its VIN number, because I highly doubt we'll be able to find that.

Its a fuckin cool bike and I remember he said he welded the frame himself and used a shovelhead harley engine. Probably built in the 60's or 70's.

Do you ever get worried? It sounds stupid, but even though I ride like I have a death wish and have done for the past 5 years, I never worry about myself. I never think twice when I go for a ride, never think twice being stupid on Twisties or track. But as soon as my wife hops on the back to go for a little cruise I get super paranoid. I was looking at getting her a little 250 for a surprise gift, but ended up worrying too much and scrapped the idea.

I test rode a bunch of bikes. I was coming from a bandit 1200. I tested zxr675, gsxr600, cbr600, triumph 675. The CBR was the slowest feeling (could have been the fact I didn't get a chance to red line it unlike the others). I ended up buying a gsxr750. I wanted something smaller than the 1000s that I'm used to, but didn't want to loose to much torque or have to shift every second. I went straight from 250ccs to a 1100 so never got to be wowed by the 600s.

Gsxr750 is perfect for me. Light enough, small enough, torquey enough. Not a 1000 but still has perfect amount of power that I don't feel like I need more.

>Do you ever get worried?

Yeah, I do. I told her every story, every concern, every danger I could think of to make sure she knew what she was getting into. I did my best to make sure she wasn't over-romanticizing it and took the risks seriously. I never tried to tell her she couldn't, or to really talk her out of it though. I'll never give up riding, so it would be too hypocritical for my tastes to try and stop her.

So, in the end when I came to the conclusion I wasn't going to talk her out of it, I laid the pressure on to make sure she bought the safest, easiest, most forgiving starter bike she could. Made sure the bought all the gear, took the two day safety course.

She's been riding for about a full week now, and commuting on surface streets to gain experience. THAT makes me nervous as fuck because drivers are really shit here and I don't even commute on my bike anymore, but it's her call. It makes her so happy, and I know how she's feeling, so...

I'm taking her on a 4 day dual sport ride / motorcycle camping trip at the end of the month. If I can get her to fall in love with off road motorcycling hopefully she'll sart leaning more that direction.

We also have $200,000 life insurance policies on each other, so if she kills herself at least there's that.

Have you tried lifting the links off the rear sprocket? Rotate your chain and keep checking, some spots have more play than others.
What does your front sprocket look like? Is it starting to hook over?
You can always get a good quality non o-ring chain much cheaper than o-ring if you don't mind the extra maintenance. A sprocket set can cost you $30 total or less.
Once you take that chain off, you'll probably find links that are very stiff to rotate. You'd never know with the chain still on the bike but that's sure to reduce your bikes power a bit.

Fuck yeah dude, you're going to love it. I checked out a KLR250 once. 80's/90's dual sports are great machines, very reliable and loveable. And I think they look the best. Don't care for modern angular crap, I want my square headlights and fun color schemes. I'm jelly of yours, take good care of it.
IIRC there was never a Clymer manual for the 250 but you can still find some manuals and plenty of other info online. Advrider should have a community for your bike.
If your plastics ever start to fade, you can bring back the color with a heat gun. Be careful tho. There's a video on YT how to do it. Obviously you won't have to worry about that for a long time but it's nice to know.
>>
>>17019917

Well you've got a good bike to start learning. I honestly recommend reading through your owners manual or a service manual for your bike, there's a lot of good info in there usually.

Outside that, it's not so different from a car. Oil and filter changes, keep an eye on your tire wear, brake pads, etc. You bike is carbeurated, but don't let it intimidate you. Carbs are surprisingly simple and for the most part require no maintenance. If it ever does, the worst part is usually just getting it out and back in depending on the bike.

Now's a good opportunity to go over all the little things on your bike to both get familiar and make sure the previous owner didn't do something stupid. Clutch, brake, and throttle cable adjustments, as well as chain tension are good to look at. If you don't know how long it's been since an oil and filter change, take a good look at the oil. Make sure the nautilus looking chain tensioners on the rear axle are set to the same notch. Check for loose bolts. Grab all your spokes and try to wiggle them. If you find any with any play in them, snug them up but don't over tighten.

It's all easy shit and you'll have no problem picking it up as you go.

Welcome purple frame bro
>>
>>17020376
did you do it?
>>
>>17019842
Nah, no gummy worms - I've been dry.
I oughta make some more tho.

I hope to get a bike. We'll see though. If I'm gonna be baking bread beginning at 0400 then I oughta be able to make a decent stack, enough for a better-than-shitbike if I don't invest the money elsewhere.
>>
>>17020481
Hopefully it goes well mang. What do you like to drink? I'll bring you a bottle and a dbt sticker next time I'm down.

Oh I also ordered an exhast and got my fender shit for my bike so no ugly fender soon.
>>
>>17020468
Oh fuck no, filling out paperwork doesn't cost the dealer $350 fucking dollars.
They can blow it out their asses.

My bikefu is too pure for their greedy paws.

I remember revving up my bike at a light to impress some kids but instead they jumped back and were scared shitless.

Thanks, me too. Booze is booze, I'm not picky. Don't worry about it tho, I'll acquire rum soon.

Good to hear. New exhaust still has space for some hot dogs, I hope.

aight I guess.

it should have more room its an akra. I'll post it whenever it shows up, been waiting like a month for it
>>
Br/o/s, just did my first 2.5 hour/116 mile ride to my dad's house. My ass was numb, a windscreen would've made it easier, and it got kinda cold toward the end, but it was a top 10 feeling.

Damn, a month? You buy it straight from Slovenia or something?
>>
>>17020618
I guess its coming from slovenia, bought it from the stealership because they gave me 20% less than the lowest price I could get anywhere else, they said its going to take a few days but then called and said their distributor was out. So, probably straight from slovenia.

Spidi makes a mesh jacket that saved me several bones.

It's like a $300 jacket, but bones are pretty valuable. It has padded shoulders, a back protector, and a chest protector, and it doesn't cook you.

Plus I got a wicked mesh tan.
>>
>>17020629
Damn dude. I wish you the speediest of deliveries.
At least you got a nice price.
>>

Thanks famalam, I'm calling tomorrow to ask again.

Yeah, more money to put to a dirtbike/importing some memes

help pls. How do I get my knee down? I feel fast and all my friends call me crazy because I can corner faster than them but I still can't touch my knee down and I have no way of knowing how far off I am.
>>

Any news on an XRR or a challenger?'
>>
>>17020715
Do it in shorts, you'll know when you've got it down.
>>
>>17020715
>I have no way of knowing how far off I am.
I mean just look down at your knee
>>
>>17020739
Nope, all the xrrs are far as shit. Don't really want a challenger anymore, don't know what to get honestly, haven't really felt like going out and looking at stuff for a while or going out at all tbqhwu.
>>
>>17020766
I've tried but I only see the top of my leg and not the bottom of my knee. Also it's hard to keep a good line when I'm staring down at my leg

used to lurk a while ago, but haven't been on in a while

Wanting to buy a salvage title bike in an auction. I'm good with titling and salvages, etc and condition for the most part isn't an issue (thanks to my super conservative state legislators and my previous experience),

but I want to participate in online bike auctions, but I want to go directly from a site like Copart, which seems to be an official place but actually requires having a broker

can someone clue me in on a broker, what they do, why they cost so much (apparently over $1k USD on copart, but lower on smaller sites that seem less legitimate), and what can I do to either get the lowest rates for brokering or be a broker for my own transactions if possible

the internet hasn't actually been help in regards to motorcycle auctions. searches always just seem to pull up an abundance of auction sites that have their own "About/FAQ" specific to their services
>>
>>17020991
In some states, by law, some auctions are only open to licensed dealers. These laws exist to prevent the massive used car fraud of the past that gave used car dealers the reputation of used car salesmen.

The broker is a licensed dealer that buys the car and resells it to you.

Step 1 is to get some objective proof of your body position, you might feel like you're in a certain position but when you see photos or videos of yourself you'll find it's not the case, once you do this you can build certain "checklists" into your body position routine so you know your bits are in the right place. When I feel no seat on my inside bum cheek and my arm is touching down on top of the tank is when I know I'm in the right position for example.

Every time I've had photographs taken I've learned a little more about what I'm doing on the bike and stuff I can improve, even if it's stuff as minor as I'm always covering the front brake when I shouldn't be etc. I cannot stress enough how important this is if you're working specifically on body position.

I've never personally needed to do this but something I read in a video is pointing your toes in, if you point your toes into the corner your knee will naturally follow if you really wanna stick your thang out.

also check your knee sliders are in the right spot, I tend to like having them at the top of velcro patch because that makes them hit the road exactly parallel for my legs.

lastly: just work up slowly, don't get frustrated and say "right I'm gonna go really fast this time and I'll definitely get my kneedown" because that ain't gonna end nicely, just work up bit by bit with speed.
>>
>>17021016
Got you. That was easy. That's what I was picking up in general, but nothing seemed to be specific enough

If I'm looking at spending between $300-$1200 for a used bike in auction (not counting fees/transport/etc), why do brokers want usually almost the same amount overall, or what can I do to minimize the cost? I know with a lot of services, it's including the labor and paperwork loads, so pretty much is there anything I can legally take care of that will reduce the cost with a broker?

It just seems like a racket on its own for free people to buy/sell products to each other but charge almost the value of the purchase in fees, etc.

I feel like it should be sale value-based amount, from what I've learned about their role so far
>>
>>17021048
I expect their fee is pure profit. Computers do all the paperwork these days. Start calling them, let them know that the fee is a dealbreaker for you, and if you get a good broker come back and let us know...
>>
Holy fuck, this TW200 has a bundle of miles. Even though it's a 196cc... 50k, wowza.

This sounds sounds like an unbelievable amount of trouble, expense, and risk to buy an used bike.
>>
>>17021080
shit, lol will do

that's a solid strategy. had to use it regarding traffic lawyers actually

apprently DUI cases and shit have been low around here lately
>>
>>17021119
gtfo, not what I asked

If you're a scrub or just that busy, yes, it's a pain in the ass

but I work full time and pretty much look forward to whatever project I have going after work. Not having a bike also sucks, but I love how rewarding it feels riding a piece of machinery that is so nice because YOU fucking made that ride sweet. Built not bought
>>
>>17021141
Really? I'd rather just pay to have a reliable ride that works when I need it do.

Summer days are short - I'll be out riding while you're in the garage fucking around with your carbs.
>>
>>17021167
>assuming every hobby mechanic is absolute shit and can't produce reliable rides

They aren't anywhere near as complicated as people like you think,

With cars, the involvement and overall cost can be almost exponentially higher, so I don't fuck around with any of that. I don't buy them brand new because I can't really afford to, but overall I trust the cars that get usage for a minute while initial craftsmanship issues/etc are already figured out and found out. Not to mention there will already be small communities of people available with experience with those vehicles.

But with bikes, they're not that expensive so not to learn to fuck around

to each his own, but you're pretty much like a wealthy illiterate going "hurr durr I'd rather just pay for someone to read and write for me"

sure it isn't as fundamental to being a productive human being, but I wouldn't disregard it noting the money you have to throw at shop work for anything

I have a Fireblade. Hondas are "more than the sum of their parts". They're extremely well balanced. The handle exceptionally, even compared to other liters. Other brands can boast a slightly higher hp output, top speed, and rev higher but that doesn't automatically mean they are better. They rev higher to get the extra hp, but then it takes longer to hit the higher revs and powerband, so it's slower coming out of the corners. Others have higher top speed at the cost of taller gearing so they accelerate more slowly. Marketing people try to use these slightly boosted numbers to sell more units, but I say test ride them all and take the Pepsi challenge.

>also, see how well McGuinness and Martin do on their new Fireblades at the TT this year compared to Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and BMW despite being "down on power".
>>
>>17021412
But this year's Fireblade race bikes are hot fucking garbage so far. They would have been better off still racing their old bikes until HRC actually makes something worth a shit.
