I just got a nice deal on a '00 that needs cosmetic work but is rust free. It's my first Miata and there are a few things I'm trying to figure out as I start to service/ wrench on it. Curious if anyone has experienced any of these issues:

1. Occasionally has an extreme vibration when leaving 1st (at stoplight etc). Extreme as in, feels like the drivetrain is trying to leap out of the car, have to stop and let it back down to idle before trying to move again. This comes and goes, some days it wont happen at all, but often once it happens it will do it again if I stop within a few blocks. Seems to not be as much of an issue if I rev it up to around 4k and launch. Also seems to happen more often on an incline. Once it's in gear everything is smooth and shifts perfectly fine, clutch pedal feels normal. Could it be worn out motor mounts? Guy I bought it from said it has a newer clutch but maybe something's out of spec?

2. Mystery fuel smell in cabin. Have not been able to find a single leak, but I often get a pretty strong smell of fuel with the top up. Seems to be more prevalent on the highway.

3. Often turns over for a while before starting. Sometimes starts right away, sometimes takes 3-4 seconds. Newer battery, and it has not gotten worse over the last month, so I don't think the alternator is going bad as they usually die pretty quickly once they do in my experience with other vehicles.

Otherwise it runs like a top and is a ton of fun so far, really glad I finally got one.
>>
Just been to a local miata meet.
Everyone is super nice and I could see that all of them loved their cars. It was cool to have a common ground with people you just met from the get go.
>>
>>16889587
1) I've got the same thing in my '01, seems to be worse when it's warmer out but I haven't found anything solid that causes it to happen. My own research into it has shown about half the people who replace the clutch claim it's fixed, the other half say it's not fixed, so just rev the shit out of it. Personally I'd like to replace my clutch/flywheel regardless, but in the few months I've had mine it hasn't crapped out so far.

2) Check the basics, make sure your fuel lines aren't leaking, pull the carpet back over the fuel tank access port in the car, make sure you don't see any fresh gas leaking out of where the filler neck goes into the tank.

3) Again I've got the same thing. My first guess was fuel pressure regulator letting fuel leave the rail once the car was turned off, so the next time you go to start it you're effectively waiting for the rail to fill back up, but I haven't verified. Like the shuddering in #1 it hasn't left me stranded or been more than a minor annoyance, so I haven't worried about it.

Well, I think i was the youngest there being 23.
Had no problem with it whatsoever - they were all very nice.
>>
>>16889617

Thanks for the response, good to know that even though they're annoyances, those same issues haven't gotten worse for you yet. I also figured I'd replace the clutch, probably will wait a bit and get a lighter flywheel at the same time.

I have noticed that if I turn the key to on and leave it for a few moments before cranking it will usually start faster, so if that's sending power to the fuel pump/ regulator then you're probably right.

Can anyone here do me a really quick favor?
I don't know anyone around me who has a miata and I can't find any good references online.
I just swapped out my head gasket and after putting everything back together I realized I never took note of which order these hoses went in.

Can someone take a quick peak under their hood and tell me which hoses go where? Would be much appreciated.

Ok, so at about 150,000 miles, what kinds of should I be expecting from my new NB? It's rust free, has a great service record over 5 owners, and despite the tweaked bumper and hood, has a gorgeous interior that I genuinely cannot believe has had 5 different butts in it.
Frame is straight, but the bumper cover bracket is bent. I think the PO might have forgotten to clutch out and rolled into a pickup truck. Oh well. Mine now, time for rice.

Got it for a steal, traded my '13 Dodge Dart to a man who thinks he can reassemble FCA electronics and he gave me a loaded, slightly-dented Miata for the cost of registration and tax. The interior is Mazda Tan and black with a matching tonneau cover, it has the 1.8 and an LSD, and the top only has two holes in it!
:V

It handles beautifully and, even though I'm 6'2" it's almost perfectly comfy to drive, I just wish my knees had a little more hand clearance when turning the wheel. What's the best way to get more clearance between your legs and the wheel? Also, what's the best way to patch a roof?

Hell yeah, Touge Country, USA.

Just off it going North from the Tunnel Road entrance. It wasn't fully open that day.

I get a little driveline shudder into 1st if I don't give it enough throttle, and it does seem to have a vague fuel smell after filling the tank all the way in particular. Interent research suggests this is fairly normal. I think it may be caused by an aging EVAP system. Gonna try and clean the intake manifold and see if that helps.

it's basically a street legal go-kart that comes with a manual transmission which is fun and engaging for a lot of autistic people to use. if you're a normie/non-car enthusiast, then yeah the miata wont appeal.

also they handle really well even stock so they're fun to whip around corners

We are one. I've got tiny door dings from my time in public parking lots and one tiny hail/rock dent on the hood that drive me fucking nuts when I see the light reflect off of them. Thankfully my car is white so from more than 6 feet away it looks spotless. Do they typically charge per panel or per dent? I'm too scared to try working the dents out myself.

Nice, yeah it's still closed from Rattlesnake Lodge to around Mt Mitchell right now, hoping they'll open it up this weekend so I can do some driving/ hiking. I threw some gopros on mine last fall and went up the parkway, got some great footage.

>>16893729
Mine is black, so there was no escaping it. I was quoted for the entire car, but he said he was willing to just quote whatever I wanted fixed if that's how I wanted to do it. He was just going to hand me some painters tape and have me mark whatever I wanted.

I ended up doing the whole thing, I can't even tell you how many there were total. I know the hood alone had 30+ from parking under a buckeye tree, and some recent hail. The guy was a fucking wizard though, it looks better than I could have ever expected.
>>
>>16893759

How much did that run you? I've got hail damage, already replaced the hood and trunk so i was thinking about PDR for the quarters, doors, and fenders
>>
>>16893772
$900. I think I got a pretty crazy deal, considering the sheer amount on the hood, upper fenders and deck lid. I also had a huge dent in the rear quarter that I had quoted a long time ago at a few places for a minimum of $250. But he took care of everything, and I couldn't be happier with the results.

Hello. To anyone with an NA, I need some help. I have these two wires that look like ground, and my service manual isn't very specific on them with no pictures at that. I didn't take note of where they went before hand and if they were touching or not. Idk if they're both ground so I don't want to try overlapping them. 2001 miata automatic (I'm learning 5 speed don't worry)

What kind of transmission fluid do I use? Just got the car few days ago and didn't come with owners manual. Would like to figure out what I need before I get to the store. Busy busy , also Google hasn't given me a definitive answer

Just needing to add some transmission fluid as its fairly low. I'll completely change it out when I has free time.

Thanks in advance!

not sure what you're asking chap. it's going to depend on the year. assuming we are talkin 1989-93 and 98-2000~

To a shelf in the back of my garage. Along with the fuel-evap carbon canister and cruise control 'module.'

I don't see the need for spraying your windshield while driving. I took that out in 2010 and haven't once wanted it back.

I need you guys' opinions on this. Hidden gem or disaster waiting to happen? I want it. Guy said there was an accident on the passenger side but there's no real damage left. "Small dent on quarter panel and door has dings but that's about it. Soft top has some tears. Will include new drilled / slotted rotors." I've heard insurance companies total Miatas real quick so the rebuilt title could be for almost nothing. Do I just need to go see it? How do I check for frame damage to make sure the accident wasn't catastrophically bad and he's just trying to cover it up?

thx

Second one is possible. $4k is in budget and it looks nice. It's a little far though but I can do it.

Third one is a little pricey but would it be worth it to save a bit more then see if he still has it? I just read the 10th Anniversary Editon has a 6 speed and a few other unique parts.

I'll pass on the rebuilt title I guess. Just antsy to be back in a Miat.

I think you'll need to take it to a good transmission shop and replace the clutch and maybe flywheel too.

The entire engine and drivetrain can take up to 250HP stock with a turbo.

It's so well documented and there are so many poor college kids with them that you can boost them for super cheap if you know how to DIY some stuff. Think like $4000 on top of the price of the car to have a power to weight ratio of a 500HP mustang and still be able to turn on a dime.

That feel when I've powerslid through over 30 corners on public roads today and never once spun or lost the slide. I even did 3 or 4 real drifts where I was sideways before the corner. I never even needed full throttle or revs over 5.5k.

Disclosure: it is raining, I have a torsen LSD, economy tires, higher tire pressure in the rear than front, and a fat rear sway bar.

I fucking love this car. I'm finally at a point where I can do 40° angle slides through intersections on 6-lane roads and hit the exact lane I want without the back end going the other way after I stop. I've been working at this shit for years. Absolute bliss.

>>
>>16902404
Yeah, in 2011-12 I had a set of 15x8" track wheels / tires (Kumho VictoRacer V700s) and they would sometimes just magically regain grip in the middle of a slide immediately swinging the rear the other direction (or understeering, at best).

I recently took my car in for an alignment and the shop owner actually came to me in the waiting room and told me that they had never seen a wear pattern like I have despite having good tread left and that I need to slow down! Cheap all-seasons are the shit for powerslides / drifts (under 70 mph at least).

I set my cold tire pressures at 23F / 27 R for ease of braking the rear loose with the lower-pressure fronts able to maintain more grip to keep things controlled.

>>
>>16901927
Your 86 has a longer wheelbase than a Miata, and because it's so low slung and short, you can toss it through just about any corner without losing the rear end. Whenever the rear tires do come loose, it's pretty easy to correct but all-in-all, I would like to think that the Miata is more for grip driving than anything. I've never driven an 86, so I'm like the opposite of you. I don't really know the driving characteristics of the 86 but I can assure you that the Miata will happily grip through any turn that you choose to throw it through. I daily mine as well, and having a fully loaded NB1, it's pretty damn comfy, and fun to drive every day. I imagine it will be only slightly faster than the 86 as well, but I don't think you're looking into these cars for the straight line speed.

Alright /o/
I happened to see my mechanic at work and mentioned miatas. He said one of his regulars is selling a '97 miata for 2k. It's a little over the 100k miles and needs a top end rebuild. A miata is my affordable dream car right now and I want to check it out.

From what I know, it's the 1.8 L NA. I don't know any other details. Some searching said that an engine swap might be cheaper than a rebuild but if nothing else is wrong, it might be 2.5k to 3.5k for a running NA. This sounds like a steal so I'm expecting other possible issues. Anything I should look out for?
>>
>>16903655
If the body is clean, and interior and shit is in good condition, that's a reasonable price. Maybe you can offer a few hundred bucks less and see what you can get. You can either rebuild if the engine is in good enough condition, maybe make the best of it and throw some forged pistons and other upgrades in there. You can have a high-hp ready miata for right around 5k that way.
>>
>>16903670
That sounds like a dream. Right now I drive an 05 accord coupe, i4 5mt. I love it but I think I'd love a miata more. The accord I got for 4.2k + about 1.1 in work at 94k mi (now 109). It's somewhat modified (but done properly), so I was expecting to sell it for less than an unmodified one. Mechanic said that tuners love that sort of thing and might pay a little extra for the mods even. If I could make the switch without losing any money that'd be unbelievable.

I have been wanting to get a miata since I drove a friends NA for the first time a few years ago. Currently, I don't own a car, but will have to get one when I move to Costa Rica in a few months. The thing is, the roads there are less than perfect, and there is a rainy season -- my heart says get the Miata, my brain says it's not practical for those conditions.

Thoughts?
>>
>>16910946
Gallo pinto here.
I daily an old spitfire with no problem, the rain really isn't that bad, and I don't even have a defroster, the only problem with a miats is they're ridicously expensive here (as is everything else) and theyr'e often riced.
>>
>>16910959
Thanks, great to hear first hand impressions. Yes, I have noticed how expensive cars are there. But since I have to get one anyways... I would live in San José, but try to go to the beaches as often as possible on weekends.

Don't roads flood during the rainy season?
>>
>>16910959

Cool car, btw. How did you find something like that?

1 road in San Pedro floods, AFAIK. But only like onece a year.
>>
>>16911013
Thanks, that puts me at ease. I'll check my options when I arrive there -- there are only a handful miatas on the websites I have checked (crautos, encuentra24), but with a little patience, I guess I can find something decent.

Use common sense, you can barely tell anything from pictures. Check the car fax

Go check out the car in person and look in the typical rust spots (google that yourself)

and if there is even a spec of rust low ball the shit out of him.

Thank you.

Everything looks great, dawg, and I'm pretty sure it has a VLSD, too. Bit the first picture makes it very clear that it's been in a front-end accident. Note the changing gap between the hood and other panels, the new turn signal lens, the gap between the fender and front bumper, and even a changing gapline between the front fender and door. I also just noticed that the fenderwell tab that keeps the fender and wheel well plastic held together was painted along with the fender.

Also:
>I purchased this car to make a race car out of it.

BTW I miss Charleston. Back in 2007-8 when I lived there the street scene was huge. 200-400 people would meet every weekend at night in certain parking lots. There were different teams, and we'd have races where people would even go ahead and block off streets and call ahead if there were cops. There was even a huge old car scene of rich boomers with super-rare trims of old cars.

A lot of smoking hot chicks in sun-dresses too!
>>
>>16911206
Thanks for mentioning the front end. I didn't notice that.
>Charleston
Downtown? Charleston has changed a lot since 10 years ago. Too many people moving here. I'm going to leave soon. It's nothing like it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. It was empty when my parents moved here a few decades ago. In the next ten years, we will have apartments all the way up to Awendaw.

I love this place but it's too crowded -- and yankees are changing the culture.
>>
>>16911243
I lived in Mt. Pleasant and worked at the Bosch factory on Dorchester. Most of the (illegal) car meets were in North Charleston on Rivers Ave or places around there. Most of the races were highway rolls after midnight and there was an old theater lot where people would set up impromptu low-speed drift courses. I did a TON of roll races on highway 526. People used to do standing burnouts on it's bridge at like 2 am lol.

There were a few old vids of me racing in charleston on streetfire.net but apparently that went down recently.
>>

It's true that many of them are riced to shit. We have a miata club set up so we can go racing and I see all kinds of rice and terrible mods on the cars every day. If you have any questions I'd be happy to help out.

The roads near the capital are crap, there's no getting around that. Although as long as you drive carefully and remember that your car is low, you'll be fine though. Even with really heavy rain I've only had one real "oh shit" moment, and that was caused mostly by an idiot trying to cross a highway at night. Get good tires and you'll have no problems.

It's a great country for driving though, once you look a little farther away from the capital. Roads on the way to Guanacaste and Puntarenas range from good to great, and since there's not enough budget for patrolling traffic officers, you're mostly safe to go all out. If you're more into the racing scene we only have one real track, but there's a lot of different scenes. Drifting just started getting big, rally championships are starting up again, and there's a lot of 4x4 stuff as well.

If you ever end up getting the car look up the local miata club on facebook, I help organize some stuff with them and, although they're a bit tasteless, they're good guys. They're also a good source for parts if anything needs replacing. Importing auto stuff into the country is a nightmare, so it's a good idea to keep that in mind when getting a car.
>>
>>16913616
I'll definely get in touch with the club, then. How's the traffic? Are there any nice windy roads where you can drive without getting stuck in a "presa"? Even if they are a bit further away from Chepe...
>>
>>16913616
>there's a lot of 4x4 stuff as well.

Depends on where you're headed really. If you're going out just for a drive there are some good roads around Puriscal and Ciudad Colon. During the day expect at least some traffic anywhere around San Jose or the major areas like circumvalacion or the highways. I have a run I do whenever I can at around 2AM that goes from some backroads in Santa Ana, up to Escazu, and then down through the old road and back into Santa Ana. If you're willing to go out late at night like me pretty much every road is uncongested and unpatrolled. Really the best twisties for cruising are on the way to Puntarenas, avoiding the highway as much as possible. Cartago also has some great roads, but it's chilly as fuck for any roof down stuff (at least for a tico).

Pic related is my car a month after I got it.

Nice! But 7k does seem like a lot for it. I see a few for less than that on crautos.com, but who knows what mechanical or rust issue they have. At least you got a hardtop, I guess...

It is a lot really, but it's a 1.8 NA which is what I wanted, plus there aren't many hardtops here and bringing one over is stupid expensive. Also had all the maintenance done, no leaks, LSD, power everything, and 80k miles. You shouldn't worry that much about rust here by the way, since we don't deal with salt on the roads most rust is minimal, if any at all. Always check though.

I hit you up on my alt email.

My Boxster had a few extra options, such as the full leather interior and 12-way power seats so the cockpit was pretty damn swanky.

I'm an aircraft mechanic, though, and the Porsche was starting to affect my mental stability.
You see, on airplanes you can't just hear a strange noise (or whatever) and be like "oh, I'll just worry about that another day." Shit needs to get fixed NOW and for real, or people could die.

In the Boxster, there was always a weird little noise or something I hadn't noticed before. It got to the point where my level of worry about the car was equal to my enjoyment, and that's when I called it quits.

That being said, in the years I had it, it was rock solid. Not a single real problem.

The 987s are brilliant cars. Just be prepared to accept the "over-engineered German-ness" of them... And $400 CAN oil changes...

Today I discovered my parcel shelf upholstery to be a bit damp and moldy in the corner so I pulled it up and found my passenger drain hole full of garbage! The driver's side is perfectly clean, so this is a little odd.
I went and bought a telescoping presentation pointer and shoved all the crud out, sprayed the parcel shelf fabric with Clorox cleaner (not full bleach obv.), rinsed with water and let it dry in the sun.

Pulled some of the carpet behind the passenger seat back and luckily the water in the drain never got high enough to intrude into the passenger compartment, so I'm glad I caught it when I did.
I'm also really glad I bought this when I did, no telling what sitting for months, overpriced and mislabeled at the lot would have done to the interior and body. Ugh. Next week I'm going to pull the carpet completely out and give it a good look-over and cleaning.

About to go on a 846 mile round trip and I'm very confident in its reliability after driving the hell out of it. Makes my old '13 Dart look like a shitbox in every respect. I shoulda just bought a Miata to begin with.

Get the ISR, it's pretty good and it replaces all the way back to the headers

We told you idiot

I went with the ISR. This is my first "loud" exhaust and it's mind numbing just how loud it is inside the cabin. The mechanic that installed it insisted that this was fairly quiet too. I went with the cat delete resonator version and my car smells like shit now too which I am happy with since I can stick it to the liberals now with my pollution

How'd I do, /mg/? It has 130k miles, an a/c leak but that's pretty much it. Bought it for $2600 including the fucking $260 title change fee. The paint isn't original and its a 1.6L.

Thanks guys. I have one gripe and its that the steering wheels hit my legs since I'm 6'2. Any ideas on what I should do? I heard that you can remove some of the foam in the seats to give you some more clearance. I'll try to see if I can adjust the seat a bit more since I'm also using this car to learn how to drive stick... I stalled twice today...

'99 NB fag here, I'm 6'2" as well and the car fits like a glove.

Foamectomy is great for adding headroom but removing foam from the lumbar support is the way to get your legs some more room to extend, and it can make the seat very uncomfortable if done improperly.

You could also try an aftermarket steering wheel and boss kit to move the wheel closer to you and away from your knees.

Im considering turning my 94 miata into a dedicated track car and throwing in a mk turbo kit, while buying an s2000 + kraftwerks supercharger kit for my daily.

should I just sell it and buy an old spec miata/TT car with probable salvage title, or just turn my old daily into said track slut? I originally wanted to turn my AP2 into a track slut, but me destroying it, and having to deal with my insurance cancelling me is making me have second thoughts, the miata on the other hand is cheap to insure(somewhat) and doesn't need any emissions testing
>>
I'm thinking of dropping around 4-5k on a 2001 LS, 130k miles. Test drove it today, but I'm curious. I have always heard that miatas are supposed to be really fun. My DD for the last 4 years has been a Hawkeye Impreza 2.5i. It weighs like 600 more lbs, has only 30 more hp, but seems to be faster and handles maybe a little worse than the Miata.

I was expecting to be a little more impressed by the Miata, but I guess I didn't drive it a whole lot either.
I could drop the money on it and own the Miata and Impreza outright, or I could sell my Impreza and try to finance a ~5 year old WRX instead.
What would you guys do?

Why do people do this in the first place? It's not like it isn't on full display all the time anyway.

I could understand if you're like "hey anons here is the car I carry around my gold bars in" but holy shit it's just a Miata.
