My shitty supra developed new shitty issues.
It doesn't like revving under load. If I floor it it feels like I hit the rev limiter around 3500rpm. I thought it was the plugs so I replaced them but it's still there. Where should I go next? Injectors? Pump?
I'm gonna plug another AFM in and see if anything changes tomorrow but I'm trying to build a plan of attack.

Tell me about how you came to have your ride.
Stealership? Family? Did you drive out of state or country to get it? Craigslist gem? Shitbox that you got as your first of after another car blew up that you just happened to fall in love with? Project car?
I drove out of state to pick mine up. Way home was through torrential rain but man, if it wasn't one of the most satisfying things I've done in a long while. Nothing too exciting other than a cop tailing me for a while before pissing off.
Gimme those stories.

I bought it from my bro. We live under the same roof. One day while we were eating breakfast, he said he's tired of it and wanted a new project car. He told me it's for sale for $100 bucks just for me. I started up my civic and went back in the house to buy it off of him because it'd be stupid to say no. It's my second car and it's my fun car.
Pic related the day I bought it.

Got a minor issue bugging me with the 94 Corolla.

>start up car
>belt squeals quite a bit if I start turning the steering wheel a bunch
>go all the way to lock, battery light starts flashing
>eventually stops squealing

I do believe I need to fix the negative battery cable, as it won't start sometimes without wiggling it. Should the accessory belt be tightened a bit more? I did replace an alternator a long while ago and the squealing started after that.

Just did a wheel bearing yesterday. Fucking thing was toasted.
>>
>>16830500
might be power steering pump belt?
>>
>>16830500
I think it's the belt too like what the other anon said. If not, it's probably the pulley. I'd tighten the tensioner if there's some play while it idles, meaning the belt looks thicker than it is because it's wiggling slightly.

Hey good goys which one should I swap in to my memeR2
1mzfe:
>pros: more power for cheap
>cons:manual transmissions for this are hard to find and most of the time the reason why Camrys with this engine are in junk yards is because of the burning oil issue that everyone seems to over look, shit gas mileage and if decide to do basic stuff good luck it's cramped as shit
5sfe:
>pros:more common engine in Camrys so more parts for decades and the engine is pretty stronk easy as shit to maintain and good enpeeges
>cons:less power than the v6 and no after market for this swap what so ever
I'm leaning towards the 5sfe because it'll be easy to maintain and better mpg's
what are your guys thoughts on this?

Give it to me straight, /tg/

This is my DD, I wanted to fully restore it, and right now the rusty driver's door is my main problem. I want to paint it once everything is squared away. Drive train is solid af.

Anyway, there's an identical car going for 1500, with a lot less rust. Is it worth it to buy that sucker for parts and just have TWO supra?

There's no reason I can't get the theoretical #2 up to par once my main one is done

I know, if you have money nothing is out of the question, but this is the 1st car I've ever restored, I figure someone with more experience could guide this a bit.

So I'm installing a tach gauge and its telling to connect the main wire to the negative side of the ignition coil, which I'm pretty sure is just a bolt correct? Would I just put one of these under the bolt and crimp it, similar to a ground wire (top)?

Also, to connect the power and lighting wires to the fuse box, do I need to tap it using one of these (bottom)?
>>
>>16832097
Yes. I think I'd junk the other one after all of the best parts are on one car
>>

Rust is a really fucking shit thing to work with, and only the most minimal of rust can be removed & repainted while still looking good and not returning. Usually it'll involve either grinding away so much that you'll have to use filler to get the right shape again, or cutting & welding

If the parts are as good as you say and you think its worth the price then go for it

Fuck rust, seriously
>>
>>16832097
Don't scrap it lad. Just take out the parts you need and replace them with the worse ones off the other car and sell it to some highschool kid for next to nothing. It'll make you happy since it's staying on the road and It'll make the kid happy cause he has a sick car.

Other manufacturers require a valve clearance chack every 30.000km on not self adjusting buckets.
It didn´t wonder me that they where in spec, it wondered me that they are that well in spec.
The where exactly in the middle between minimum and maximum.
>>
>>16833197
With breaks, it took a little over 3 hours. That's a lot for a starter but I had to do it alone and holding that thing above your head while on your back for ages gets to you. It's a tight fight in the MR2, especially without taking out the exhaust manifold. I agree, feels damn good to save my turd from the scrap heap.

I'm just worried I'll get too attached to it when it finally kicks the bucket. Wasn't gonna waste a sticker on the thing now, was I?
>>
>>16833254
The MR2 is a nice car, I whish I had one.
There is nothing wrong with getting attached to a 80s/90s car, in fact most of this board mainly focuses on that.
>>
>>16833285
MRs are nice cars, but mine is an awful example. Ultra rusty and ugly but drives fine. I honestly love it to bits and was the best $200 I've ever spent. I'm sure you could find one for pretty cheap as well if you want one.
>>
>>16833145
My most likely course of action. The parts car will end up with rusty doors, subs, a worn center console, weird power locks, etc, but I mean fuck it it'll still be a supra, right? And all one color, unlike mine, ha

I can at least pull the engine and make it run alright, 5mge is retarded reliable.

>>
>>16831407

>>16830500
check alt belt and general quality of all belts. Alternator issues can cause all kinds of problems worse than squeeling XD
>>
>>16832097
Talk to owner, show him your supra, tell him its a turbo and u love his so much ur gunna swap drivetrain into it, ask for good deal, profit
>>
>>16835189
I think that's actually okay for an older Toyota. My mk3 supra and my brother's corolla both have power steering noises until they warm up.
>>
>>16835408
The odd thing is it didn't do it until I replaced the alternator with one from a junkyard. I'll give it a bit more tightening and probably replace that battery cable. It has had a lot of times where it wouldn't start at all until that cable was wiggled a bit.

Headlights also flicker when braking.
>>
>>16835422
>junkyard alternator
Time for a refurbished one from vatozone. They're around a hundred $hekels
>>
>>16835565
I'll do that if tightening it and fixing the battery cable doesn't fix it. E100s are plentiful in junkyards but stuff like alternators are a mystery until I actually put it in. A bit of a pain to install though because the radiator is in the way. Though the one in my EG looks like it would be harder to play with.

aight senpai. I'm deciding between 20 valve swapping my AW11 with a black or silver top or doing a v6 swap OR cheapo tarbo. Technically my engine is totally fine, but I want more power. So far bolting on a turbo is looking to be the easiest and cheapest way to get more power unless I can pick an engine up for less than $1000, but 20 valves seem to be meme taxed as fuck. Also I think I have a 7 rib 4age since the car is an '87 so it should take boost alright. Anyone have suggestions? I want more power but don't want to dump a ton into my shitbox. Turbo also sounds like a fun project to do relative to just doing the cams and injectors like someone else suggested.

It's my mom's DD that I bought for her for $1500, with an auto 1.8 7-AFE. My EG is modified and the E100 is stock so I definitely prefer the EG. The EG has also been a lot more friendly while working on it in comparison but neither are that bad really.

Stock for stock, EG's and EK's are a bit sportier feeling. I also used to own an auto EG sedan. Both excellent cars, though.

Hi /o/

I got a 2010 Corolla at 30k miles and have run it up to 90k without doing any maintenance on it other than oil changes at 6.5k miles.

Going in for a tuneup soon. What's the most important repairs they make? Replacing tranny fluid and flushing my fuel/exhaust systems is what I've heard is essential here.

What do you think?
>>

What?
>>
>>16841892
Just inspect fluids and change it accordingly. Follow what the maintenance light and/or check engine light says if present. You don't need to replace any exhaust components if there's no check engine light for it, no audible leaks, or anything handling underneath like a heat shield.

The story didn't finish yet, I brought the car on saturday the 11th March '17 and am still in the process of customs sadly, then I have to get it through technical and emmissions test, and get a license plate.

If anyone is interested I shall start greentexting now, or when I'm done with it, which could take days or even weeks.

At least the car is pretty.

Ok here's my not so interesting blog post for my own satisfaction.

When I was 15 my cousin handed this car down to me. At the time, I had no idea what it was and I thought it was just an old broken down piece of shit. Cars were never my interest so an MR2 as a first car was something I didn't understand yet. The car had been sitting there for years and had a few problems here and there (not to mention 290,000 miles on the odometer).
After browsing /o/, Google searching, wiki reading, 1320 YouTube videos, a video called MR2 Connection, and lastly initial d, my autism grew and I learned to Hoon my dad's shitbox Toyota paseo when I got my license until I blew it up from racing. Since I learned to love, understand and appreciate the mr2, I fixed it up over summer myself and it became my first DD.

I hooned it on the daily and still do, never snap oversteered by accident cause I took it out on a parking lot on a rainy day to test the limits.

Btw I destroy that red Miata on the daily.

Ask somebody who had an MR2 as a first car anything? Tipz n' drivin trikz

Yea no shit but I had 4 bad 3 ribs sitting around so why not use one lol. Currently piecing together a high comp small port on carbs, but getting hard to find some of the stuff here.
>>
>>16848672
why carbs? I'm the guy who keeps spamming about my turbo project questions. not sure if I should pick up beefier connecting rods since I'm sticking with stock compression, but at the same time I've already got the thick ones
>>
Question
How reliable are the mr2? I just got one in good condition but I'm wondering if I should hold on to it for a while or not. Mine is 1991 2.2 non turbo

If they are known for being problem cars I'll trade it off soon
>>
>>16848887
300k+ on mine as a DD. Literally a Camry engine, just give it oil. It does not get more reliable than 5sfe.

Just take care of the body if there's rust and the suspension cause you're gonna need to refresh that always on an older car
>>
>>16848887
VERY reliable. If you want to assure its liklihood of outliving you, keep up with monthly maintenance. The only non turbo sw20's that end up failing are the one's that end up being abused and not cared for.
>>
Mine seems pretty cared for aside from a couple small dings. They spent decent money in the suspension and didn't go cheap eBay either.

Got it from 2 friends who had a lot of stories about it.
I guess the engine placement is freaking me out a bit lol This is my first 'fast' car and 5 speed at that
>>
>>16849266
Most horror stories about the SW20 MR2 surround the turbo car and if your suspension is dampened properly then you're fine. Just Google "how to drive a mid engined car" for basics and you'll be fine. I have a first gen and I've even driven it in light snow and still maintained fine control.

Engine placement?

I'm this guy >>16843119
I learned to wrench on an SW20. Nothing is particularly difficult about it. The worse you'll ever have to do is scrunch over in the engine bay and crawl under. Just be creative

As far as driving goes (since it was my first car that I also learned to drive on), you'll never reach the limits to oversteering the car unless you drive like a complete idiot. Drive normally and even a little spiritedly, you'll be fine. Do take it in a legal area where you can test the limits or a parking lot with permission and spin it out a few times within moderation. You'll learn a lot, love the car.
>>
>>16832097
Addendum to this :

Parts car I found is a 1986, technically mk3. Mine says 1985 on it, I'm sure it's the mk2. Will the doors match?

Seller says he's certain it's a mk3, so mine is ma67 while his is a70, however they LOOK identical. Waste of time?
>>
>>16849330
nope just a normal 4age 7rib. It's got the beefiest con rods of all the NA 4age's iirc, so I'm wondering if it's worth bumping to stronger conrods if I'm not planning on going higher than 8psi
>>
>>16849466
They don't look identical... So if it looks like yours he's wrong. Post link or pictures I guess.
>>
Is the Scion iM a good buy? You can get one used for like $15,000 and they're only one year old. Seems like a steal to me. I was considering buying a 2013 Acura ILX for the same money but the Scion seems like it'd be cheaper to own in the long run.

I wouldn't then, save and get a gze. You can toss boost on a NA but it's not going to last, especially without management (just assuming here, you may have some). A gze with a pulley kit can make great power for a corolla or mr2, and be flat out fast with a turbo. Just my 2 cents.

>>16849819
not the last guy but I'm debating putting in an engine in an 86 shell as soon as one pops up. Currently have a beater aw11 but I'd like to swap in either a blacktop w/ cams and stuff or a gze with a pulley kit/cams/etc. My goal is 180whp but I'm torn between the two. High revving blacktop vs supercharged goodness. Any experience building gze engines?
>>
>>16849826

that's a mk3. It won't fit. Sorry m8
>>
>>16849777
Yea it would be cheaper and it's auto trans is better than the ILX

>>
>>16849946
hmm. What if I get a gze to revv like a blacktop? Where I am both can be had for relatively the same amount of money.
>>
>>16849966
Can you even? Black tops have lighter components for happier revving, they don't take boost.
>>
>>16849819
Well I don't really have interest in going down the supercharged route and slapping a turbo on what I've already got seems to be cheaper than buying a gze and putting a turbo on it. Bottom end of a gze is the same as the ge right? My understanding was that the gze just has lower compression pistons, but I'm new to all this so I could be very much wrong. You're correct in your guess about not going the management route. Instead I'm thinking about going for maximum safety with aftermarket sensors that have safeguards for parameters set up. I'm thinking an fpr, an AEM boost/wideband (it's got a safety cut off for when shit gets fucky), oil pressure temp gauge, and a pyro gauge for exhaust gas temps. I'm considering buying an aftermarket maf for the psuedo management on a budget deal. Lastly, some larger injectors
>>
>>16849972
I was thinking of upgrading the gze internals. Cams/highcomp pistons/rods/bearings etc. Different pulley/supercharger for low end and high revvs for top.
>>
>>16849978
oh and some kind of knock sensor
>>
>>16849875
Specifically a gze, no. I have only built NA 16v's. However, you probably won't need to build a gze for 180 hp, you can get that with a pulley kit. If this is going into a corolla, I would go gze all day. Personally I am not a fan of 20v 4AGEs (well incomparison to 16vs I am a huge 4AGE fanboy in any flavour) the swaps can be pretty pricey for not a lot of pay off, gze is straight forward in a corolla or an mr2.
>>
>>16849992
It would be for an 86. I like the gze and the 20vs equally so that's why I'm torn. I could pick up either engine for about 1.3k cad so it's not too pricey but I do realize that I could get more power for my dollar with nearly anything else.
>>
>>16850017
20v gets pricey when you have to do the dizzy relocation and all that.
>>
>>16849952
I'm talking about reliability wise. Not everything is about bench racing. Honda auto trans are still shitty for the average driver since they neglect its fluid and drive rough

Nah, its actual green

Here in Norway a green plate is a "tradesman vehicle", although the literal translation is "van".

>total weight 3500kg or less
>3 seats or less, and no seats are allowed behind the drivers seat
>must have a divider/wall between seats and cargo hold
>must be able to fit a 140cm x 90cm x 105cm crate

They are cheaper to buy due to much less tax, generally cheaper to insure, reduced yearly road tax and reduced re-registration fee when switching owners

This creates a "loophole", where people buy large SUVs and register them as tradesmen vehicles, removing the rear seats and fitting a wall. You can not fit the seats again without paying the tax difference between the car being registered as a standard passenger car and a tradesman vehicle, which is a sum that varies with the vehicle weight, power, emissions and whatnot. This sum goes down 10% every year that it has been registered in Norway, meaning that after 10 years you can put the seats back in and get it registered as a passenger car for free
>>
>>16849978
Which 7 rib bottom end? Is this a smallport or big port? Small port bottom end is the same as a gze minus pistons, if it's a big port with a 7 rib block (ie an AW11) then they are different, the gze crank has larger journals, larger con rods, and larger wrist pins.

Depends on how dicked your 4age is, you can do a basic rebuild on one with new rings, bearings, and gaskets for around $170 CAD. You might be able to get one from a junkyard or off of craigslist for cheaper than that, but it's always a risk. Buddy bought a 16v off some guy in town for $100 and it had 80 psi across the board because he didn't comp test. I would go the rebuild route, it's not much money and you know you are getting a good engine out of it. These motors are so dead simple, with all the parts there I can put one together in a day.

I have to get rid of this fuck ugly paint job, what should I go with? Thinking about dark navy or black. Still have to paint the spoiler and buy some side skirts to complete the exterior, probably won't paint for quite a while since its expensive.

how should i go about getting the side skirts? ebay or shell/craigslist?

>>16860751
just take it to a track and push it so you get an idea of how it goes. the later years had some fixes that made it safer i believe. if you don't drive like a complete idiot on the road you'll be fine. i would say probably 5-6k if it's been driven hard, high milage but no serious issues like engine or transmission. From there it will skyrocket if there are mods, low milage, ect. Some people are trying to get upwards of 15k in my area and that's just ridiculous.
>>
>>16860863
Black is a meme color, hard to keep clean and it looks like shit if it's not. Navy would be good, but you'll have to pay a lot to make sure it completely covers the red. A dark car with red door jams or engine bay looks like trash. I'd just repaint it red and accept it.

UPDATE-WALL OF TEXT
(day 2 of driving stick)
I drove myself to work today! Totally probably shouldnt, did fairly well until the last mile or so. Traffic was high and speed limit is 50. I am not used to reacting that fast while using 5 speed so I kinda just went full panic mode a few times .

Couldn't drive it home (long story).

Gotta put a new starter in my roommates truck then ima practice on it. Its slower and way less intimidating to drive. Once in a while when I shift my car jerks or jolts a bit and it startles me so I go blank. Any help with that?

My mr2 has an aftermarket clutch and exhaust (don't know specifics) and hot damn it's gotta be stomped floored . so I gotta get my leg muscle used to it. As far as exhaust, it sounds so good but it's intimidating.

Any tips for smoother shifting? Any tips for driving a fast car in general? (its my first fun car).

To explain my nervous mindset, I've seen and been in a lot of wrecks (only one was my fault). So this is me facing my fear head on while getting into a hobby that excites me.

Use proper enginer cleaner. Degreaser works aswell, but not all of them are all that kind towards the rubber in your engine bay

Engine cleaner on a can, dishwashing brush, toothbrush and a water hose with adjustable nozzle

First; if you want to be super careful then make sure all lids & boxes are properly shut, cover your alternator with some plastic and remove the batteries before beginning.

Liberally apply engine cleaner over everything and let it work. This works best on a cold engine, as otherwise the cleaner will evaporate quick. Spray off the engine with the hose. Reapply engine cleaner, use the brushes where they are suited and hose the engine off. Repeat until desired result has been reached.

Make sure sensitive parts like the fanbelt, batteries, alternator (its a good idea to use an air compressor to blow as much water out of it as possible), plug holes, coils and everything else that might be moisture/water sensitive is as dry as can be before you start the car again

(I know its not perfect in the picutres, but it was a 15 minute wash where I didn't really bother to clean it 100% as I was going on a trip a few days later)
>>

Thats highly dependent on the condition of the engine and the reason you took it apart

I mean, it doesn't hurt to do it if the engine is starting to put on some miles, its drinking water and so on, but if nothing is in particular wrong with the engine, you get the squish right without issue and there was no visible fraying on the gasket (note; the last one is no tell-tale sign of engine wear as you never know quite what it looks like after the head comes off) then there shouldn't be any reason
>>
>>16863335
Nope. I was too busy procrastinating doing hw and studying and now it's all crashing down
>>
>>16863684
I'm this guy >>16862577 and when I went to look at it the head gasket looked in ok shape with no fraying, chipping or signs of coolent seeping out and the only thing the guy said was it kinda burned oil but everything else looked fine. The engine came off an ae86
>>
>>16863934
Burning oil is more commonly attributed to worn cylinder walls, pistons and especially the piston rings, whose purpose includes scraping oil off the walls and returning it to the reservoir. When they get worn they start letting oil into the combustion chamber, burning it

Could be a good idea to get new pistons & rings, and a honing of the cylinders
>>
>>16864086
Worn out valve shaft seals are a common source of oil consumption as well.

Congrats to u
Sounds way better than my learning experience.

The car jolts forward and back when your shift is too quick and rough.
As far as smoother shifting goes, just take a deep breath and do it in a relaxing way. It's okay to take your time. I'm guessing that panic mode is still engaging which makes you rush and mess up.
You sound like you're making progress so you'll do fine in a couple of days to a week. Good luck

Thank you, everybody is telling me to just drive for hours on end and learn. While that is true, I can't do that. Little bit each day is all my nerves can handle at the moment.

Question though, when shifting up do I need to let off the gas completely or just most of the way?
I'm letting off the gas completely then shifting, I feel it would be smoother if I didn't let off gas all the way but like most of the way

They say practice makes perfect but in my opinion incorrect practice is less than perfect.
And yes, let up the gas completely when you shift up or down.

Instead of the gas, think about the clutch. (I'm gonna get flamed for telling you this) but it's kind of okay to to slowly engage the gas and let off the clutch as if you were riding it when you up shift. Only to learn how the car feels and reacts though. You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly this way.
Wearing the car down a little bit is inevitable but you gotta do what you gotta find

It can hande light sprays just fine, but I wouldnt recommend essentially filling it with water and then starting it - you also never quite know the condition if the gasket/seals in it that are supposed to keep water and dust out

Its an electrical component - being careful with it is never a bad thing

fuuck, its gonna be till the 31st till I can get the wheel bearing and master cylinder replaced. Getting a new windshield this Wed though.

After driving it to get some coffee I noticed that it smelled like overheating and that there was a little bit of smoke coming out of the hood :(. Temp gauge was normal, so I hope I wasn't burning the clutch because I'm new to manual but I wasn't doing anything too stupid. Maybe I'll let the mechanic check out the cooling system and see if there's anything wrong.
>>

If you're saying smoke is coming out the back where the engine is then that sounds like oil is leaking from the distributor and the oil is landing on the exhaust manifold dude check for that if not take good picks under the distributor so we can tell if it's that because it's common for it to do that when it comes to 4age

Another tC bro fuck yeah. Year/mileage/price?

I'm in love with mine too coming from my xB. Auto is laggy but throttle response is pretty quick, I was surprised. It's pretty easy to get wheelspin at stoplights, I'm still used to how I needed to accelerate in the box. I haven't done any mods to mine, but once I'm back from deploying I'll take some of that money and put an intake and exhaust on for sure for shits and giggles.

First service I did to mine was just take it to the yoda dealer, they told me I needed brake fluid flushed and replaced (55k miles), but other than that I was golden. I just took it on an 8 hour road trip, 16 hours round trip, and no problems at all. It's easy to get it up fast on backroads without realizing it. Going through the country I'd look down and realize I was going 100+ without meaning to. At one point I pulled up on a guy in 2000's mustang and we were doing pulls up to about 130 with eachother. It's fun as fuck to drive, you're going to love it.

Showed it some love today and washed it, buffed out some marks with compound, and then polished the entire thing. Tomorrow is time to wax.

Have fun fellow tC bro, it's a blast to drive for being a 2 door camry.

The lower parts of the lobe are under less pressure from the valve springs so they can be thinner.
Thinner cam lobes, and thus a lighter camshaft helps reduce rotating mass, which is particularly advantageous for making small displacement engines like the KR series rev easier.

That's a nice price, mine was 56k at 11k for a '12.

One easy/cheaper mod I'd suggest is the fog lights. They aren't really that useful (they will light up the side of the road more though) but as a personal preference I like them better than the fake air vents. Mine came with them thankfully.

For a 4 Cylinder I'm not disappoint at all.

Waxed mine today after full polish yesterday. Got out a lot of paint defects and minimized some marks on the front bumper from the previous owner scraping the bottom. Used some meguiars black plastic restorer on the front columns, grills, and door sills. Looks 100x better. From reviews looks like it wears off after a while, being in Florida I give it 6 months. But I only used 1/10 of the bottle and it looks great, so I'm happy, and applying it only took about 15 minutes to hit everything. Meguiars works magic.

I'd suggest something black if you don't want oem

Milage isn't everything. If they're both maintained equally as good then I'd go 03 Corolla. Otherwise just get the one with better maintenance records and overall shape

Need more info than that man...

Niceeee. I always wondered what these were like in comparison to something like an RSX or Mazda 3. Grey paint seems easy to maintain desu but it looks great anon
