Use good gas and drive the car for like an hour before hand and don't let it get cold. If there's a line at the smog place stay in your car with the engine idling and occasionally rev it a a little to keep the temp upin the normal operating range. Hot cats and spark plugs = better emissions. Also, make sure your check engine light isn't on since that's an automatic fail in California.

Challenge the inspector to a race, beat him, fuck his girlfriend and pass yourself.

What year is your car? If it's a 2000 or newer, make sure your check engine light isn't on. That's about it. They'll do a visual under the hood and see if there are any error codes but that's about it. No more tailpipe sniffer.

If it's older than 2000, change the oil, make sure plugs and wires are good and make sure it's warmed up. Smog shop is supposed to make sure it's at "normal operating temp" before testing, but some guys get lazy.

This. If your CEL isnt on then dont waste money and dont be an asshole. Theyll tell you what to do and since persians and mexicans do all the smog checking in CA they usually know a guy.
