I'll give the W210 credit, its pretty reliable all around for a Mercedes. So its about as reliable as a Mitsubishi Diamante.

From the 80's on down these things were overall simple and easier than shit to work on, and they lasted pretty much forever with proper maintenance

From the 90's on up they're a cluster-fuck mess of computer-reliant over-complexity where nothing runs unless the computer's running smooth, and maintenance costs should count as a form of rape.

There's a w210 I really have my eye on, but I've heard so much bad things about the electronics in them that I'm scared to take the plunge.
I know the mechanical bits are good. They're practically the same as w211.

I already own a W124 and a W211.

Why would you want a w210 if you have the superior in every way w211 and w124?

Rust and bad paint are only an issue if you are buying in Europe, as Mercedes used them to field test a new water based paint system that didn't really work

Electrical issues don't really become an issues till the next generation E class, as the W210 is still fairly mechanical. You occasionally see ABS/ESP warning lights on with higher mileage ones, but 99% of the time it's just a bad wheel speed. sensor. You can still easily DIY repairs and maintenance on a W210

If there is no service history, get the car inspected by someone who knows Mercedes, and budget about a grand over the next month to get all the maintaince caught up.

It's funny how people on /o/ think that a 2000 Mercedes Benz is falling apart and a 1995 honda civic is a fucking reliable car. So much autism on this board. The think with mercedes and BMWs for that matter is that they have more sensors for stuff, more diagnostics and therefore will "overreport" stuff compared to a basic econo-shit-box. So you may get errors that a motor in your steering wheel lock had a signal out of the optimal range - but what does that mean? It just means there could be a problem with it in the future. In your 1995 shitbox therea are sensors only for the brake level fluid and coolant temperature - ofcourse it seems trouble free - when in fact it's also falling apart. The only thing with these german vehicles is that you have to DIY them or find a good cheap indy shop for them.

I'm in Europe. My w211 also has the bad water based paint. But the climate is warm enough that I don't need to worry about rust.

The one I'm looking at has the OM611 2.2l I4 turbo diesel and a six speed manual.

I've also spoken with a former w210 owner yesterday.
He said that he has never personally encountered any problems.

He also said he's heard of a problem with the car's "computer" and that the most common way to fix it is by transplanting the equivalent part from the w211.

I'm having a hard time finding someone that has had problems with their car or anyone that can get me specific information.

Like I said, absolutely no issues with mine. My grandfather took a W210 to 200K with no issues. My father took one to around 150K with no issues.
