Hi /o/, I'm thinking of buying an RX8 since the prices are so low. It won't be a DD, but it is cheap. £600 cheap to be exact. It has run in a while, and so the battery is flat, and it's grubby, but the owner assures me it runs with a jump. It also needs a new cat before MOT, Anything I should look for? The mileage isn't too high, around 50,000, and it has a decent service history. 2004 231ps.
What do /o/?

Probably needs a full engine rebuild. I'm not sure how much that costs in the UK but probably a couple grand at least.
>>
>>14298709
Mazda offers free rebuilds on any rx8 under 100k miles.
>>
>>14298702
Go for it if all else fails you should be able to recoup your cost in parts if u know how to wrench otherwise>>14298714 sounds good lol

Are you serious? Is this a joke or does Mazda just not tell anyone about this? This fixes every problem I had with the RX8.

op's car is too old though.

read the fine print to see if it's transferable
>>
Don't buy it unless you have around 2k to spend on repairs. Seriously they're not worth it.
>>
>>14298702
It's a shitty girls car don't do it man.

Why do you think they all cost pennies? They are absolutely junk.
Cons:
>not reliable
>shit interior
>girls car looks
>4 doors
>burn oil by design
>harder on gas then a v8
>electric gremlins everywhere
>will rust out
>slow
>no torque

Literally no point to this shit box, no positives. There's nothing that can be said about this shit heap and that's why they are worth nothing. You can find them for $2000 for a 09 they are just complete junk.

They cost nothing anyone could own one, we don't because it's a stupid redundant car that has no redeeming qualities.

Get a rx7 or don't get a rotary.

If it needs a CAT its fucked, its destroyed it by pissing unburned fuel into it because of low compression.

Odds are if you get it running, warm it up then stop it, it wont start again until its cooled back down. So have fun when you take it to the petrol station.

Good cars if they're in good condition, OP. I'm happy with mine. Enough power to be fun, and delivered unlike any other car - it just screams to 9000rpm or more. There isn't much out there than can do it - it's very much the last of its kind in a lot of ways.

Last naturally aspirated screamer. Last rotary. It teeters on the end of the analogue era, and the beginning of the digital.

It's piss-easy to spank around a racetrack - it's an easy car to drive fast with a really good chassis that flatters - it doesn't rely on driver aids to keep it in line, it just lets you get on with driving it.

It's als a comfy car on long journeys, and easy to drive when you just want to get somewhere without going 100%. It's slick and smooth and just humms along without stressing.

It isn't hard to make them reliable. D585 coils and a dwell remap make a world of difference to the engine. I also had the catalyst removed at the same time. Smells a bit, but runs well.
>>
>>14299064
I read the name as Turdismo.
>>
>>14299248
9/10 it's the other way around.

Bad coils kill cat
Cat causes backpressure
Backpressure overheats engine side-seal springs
Spring warps, pops the side seal from it's groove
The side seal sweeps around grinding out the end plate until it finds andintake or exhaust port to catch itself in, then shatters, grenading the rest of the engine.

It's probably fine. But not for much longer.
>>
>>14298783
You are extremely kiwi.
>>
>>14298702
Do it. I like mine. New cat just just be an ignition coil issue. It's a known weakpoint. If it starts well hot and cold it's probably fine. I've tried a bad compression one and you know immediately that something isn't right because it just struggles to re-light on the starter.

Also:

Rx8club.com is full of asshats, so ignore.
rx8ownersclub.co.uk has better information, and more relevant.

Prices are rock bottom because all the bad ones are still being worked out of the system, it is hideous on petrol and in the UK at least, comes in the worst road tax band.

We're a little luckier here in Ireland in that pre-08 cars snuck into the E636 band which means they hold their value a little better. (Better than 2500 a year for an 08+ one)

Solid ones will start to gain in value over the next few years, especially if they've been looked after. A lot of the ones still going will have had their little foibles worked out by this stage, and maybe even be a little tougher than when they left the factory. A lot of the dead ones will have either been babied around, or just not looked after.

Funnily enough, UK/IRL seems to be the only place in the world where these cars shit their main bearings. It doesn't happen in the US, but at least 50% of engine deaths here are bearing failures.
>>
>>14303784
Anything other than apex seals that need rebuilding after abuse?
>>
>>14299086
Turns out the insurance wouldn't be feasible. Figured the fact I won another car might have pushed it down a bit more than it did. Shame that.
>>
>>14303979
Main bearings should be replaced as a matter of course.

If the housings are battered they'll need replacement too.
>>
>>14298749

Stretched tires and no suspension travel on a car that spins if you so much as hit one leaf.... I'm sure you drive it like a bitch and it hates you for it.

you need to do more research

engine compression is king

if it's shit, get ready to not be able to start your car when it's warmed up e.g. at petrol stations

engine rebuild £1-3k

if cat is gone, you might need to replace coils/leads/plugs at this stage

find a rotary specialist local to you (look on rx8 owners club) and get a compression test done to see how bad things are

if it's not a daily, at £600 it's fine. if it's 2004 it will have cheaper tax than 06+ models

they are great cars - not the fastest things, but respectable

don't listen to the haters

TRACK THE FUCKING THING TIL IT DIES
>>
Get the V8 Roadster's LS swap kit and put a LS3 in it
>>
For 600 britbong dollars you can just buy it and rebuild literally everything and still come out far below the price of a 2010 civic sedan. How is this even a question?
