not a complete car noob, still dont know everything, im about to ask a VERY stupid question
My car has an intermittent problem where it will start sometimes, and it is most likely a bad starter
i got hit with the "car on, but no start yesterday"
My Question: is it possible to jumpstart my car and have it start anyway, if my car turns on, but doesnt start?
was that justva dumb question?
>pic related my car
The second part of your quesiton is worded in a very odd manner, however; if I had to try and decypher.
Yes, it's possible for your car to turn 'on'(Accessory) and not 'start' (ignition). If it sometimes does this, but otherwise runs fine, then probably points to the starter motor. First, however; I'd just check your battery. Get a multi-meter, stick it to your battery, if it's reading lower than 11.9v-12.4v then your battery could very well be the issue.
So, check battery then starter.
OP here, tested the battery before, i was still at 70 something percent still, thats why im not sure
cant currently go anywhere, trapped at friends house because it wouldnt start, might have to get it towed if anything
alright second vote for battery, i'll have to look into this when i get back home then
i also meant to ask:
say it /is/ in fact a bad starter, even with the bad starter, would i be able to junpstart the car anyway
I don't think so. "Jump starting' is more or less just sticking an extra battery to your car. The starter motor will still need to perform it's job to get your engine turned over.
There is an old 'trick' about hitting your starter with a hammer to get some more life out of it when it's on it's last leg. I ultimately think that depends if you're the kind of person who believes in percussive maintenance.
Ahhhh, i should attempt that, i know my starter is located weird under my wheel well, its just the tons of snow on the ground and no tools near me unfortunately
thanks, mine is a bit beat up as well, 179K miles and still going ( well not currently)
Use vagcom to check that you're not getting errors with the immobilizer. Also protip to strain your starter less in the winter: use lighter oil, like W0-40.
Best regards a B5-owner
They are expensive to fix and most go for cheap because nobody wants to pony up the money to fix them. I see it all the time, retarded teens buying bmws and audis for cheap because they are about to shit the bed and then driving them until they fall apart or don't run anymore. Audis are cars that you trade in when things starts going, most of them aren't even worth fixing up when buying used because it cost more than the car will ever be worth.
scanned, only error p0441, purge valve error
i will definitely do that, an oil change is due as well
ill look into it anon, thank you
yes sir i do hear a click
OP here, i bought it three years ago, ive only changed the clutch, and timing belt/waterpump combo this is the newest major problem and as ive mentioned im at 178K miles
im sure not all are treated terribly
I have a 98 b5 2.8 , got it for 2.8K usd with 100K miles, almost at 30K and although it's more maintenance than an accord it hasn't really been any worse than other cars. Most expensive thing was an $800 job for steering pump and tensioner belt
desu I've heard that the S4 is actually pretty good. Best friend got fucked so hard on an s6 and a4. They loved Audi before an had a station wagon that was really reliable. Later they got the s6 and an a4 wagon and boy did they go through a literal horror story.
turned on the car, this is my battery reading, is wasnt this low yesterday, am i looking at a bad batery?
i must be looking at a bad battery w/ it being this low?
ive heard great things about the s4 as wel and id love one
Cant bump start, trust me ive done this many times, im oddly parked in a driveway and cant get it moving on the gravel/snow unfortunately
I recently had a problem with my volvo s80 very similar to what you're having and it was indeed a bad battery. I replaced the battery and it was fine after that. I'd try some of the other cheap stuff mentioned first like cleaning the terminals and checking your grounds just to make sure because batteries are sorta expensive.
Yeah you've probably killed the battery now that you've tried starting it so many times. If it didn't start the first 20 times why the fuck would it start now.
Get some jumper cables and charge it up for a few minutes or hook it up to a battery charger.
Then clean your terminals, grounds and connections on the starter.
If it still has starting issues get a new battery they're like $100 at walmart you damn poorfag.
Also like anon above stated if u can get your whole car to autozone they can test not only the battery bUT alternator and I'm pretty sure starter as well. Alternator they can do in the car but starter you have to pull out and bring inside I think
