not a complete car noob, still dont know everything, im about to ask a VERY stupid question

My car has an intermittent problem where it will start sometimes, and it is most likely a bad starter

i got hit with the "car on, but no start yesterday"

My Question: is it possible to jumpstart my car and have it start anyway, if my car turns on, but doesnt start?

was that justva dumb question?

>pic related my car
>>
>>14233155

Take it to autozone and have your battery tested.

You'd be surprised how many times shit like that is a bad battery.
>>
The second part of your quesiton is worded in a very odd manner, however; if I had to try and decypher.

Yes, it's possible for your car to turn 'on'(Accessory) and not 'start' (ignition). If it sometimes does this, but otherwise runs fine, then probably points to the starter motor. First, however; I'd just check your battery. Get a multi-meter, stick it to your battery, if it's reading lower than 11.9v-12.4v then your battery could very well be the issue.

So, check battery then starter.

OP here, tested the battery before, i was still at 70 something percent still, thats why im not sure

cant currently go anywhere, trapped at friends house because it wouldnt start, might have to get it towed if anything
>>
>>14233181
alright second vote for battery, i'll have to look into this when i get back home then

i also meant to ask:

say it /is/ in fact a bad starter, even with the bad starter, would i be able to junpstart the car anyway
>>
>>14233189

I don't think so. "Jump starting' is more or less just sticking an extra battery to your car. The starter motor will still need to perform it's job to get your engine turned over.

There is an old 'trick' about hitting your starter with a hammer to get some more life out of it when it's on it's last leg. I ultimately think that depends if you're the kind of person who believes in percussive maintenance.

Ahhhh, i should attempt that, i know my starter is located weird under my wheel well, its just the tons of snow on the ground and no tools near me unfortunately

>>14233217
thanks, mine is a bit beat up as well, 179K miles and still going ( well not currently)
>>
i should clarify that there is no "crank"

i could turn the key past the "start" position and only the lights on the dash will turn on, as well as my radio

Use vagcom to check that you're not getting errors with the immobilizer. Also protip to strain your starter less in the winter: use lighter oil, like W0-40.

Best regards a B5-owner
>>
That poor b5

You should get rid those a4 side skirts and get s4 ones to match the paint. Would look aesthetic as fuck.
>>
>>14233265
Do you hear a "click" or not when trying to start it.
>>
>>14233217
They are expensive to fix and most go for cheap because nobody wants to pony up the money to fix them. I see it all the time, retarded teens buying bmws and audis for cheap because they are about to shit the bed and then driving them until they fall apart or don't run anymore. Audis are cars that you trade in when things starts going, most of them aren't even worth fixing up when buying used because it cost more than the car will ever be worth.
>>
>>14233274
scanned, only error p0441, purge valve error

>>14233274
i will definitely do that, an oil change is due as well

>>14233294
ill look into it anon, thank you

>>14233301
yes sir i do hear a click
>>
>>14233312
OP here, i bought it three years ago, ive only changed the clutch, and timing belt/waterpump combo this is the newest major problem and as ive mentioned im at 178K miles

im sure not all are treated terribly
>>
>>14233312
I have a 98 b5 2.8 , got it for 2.8K usd with 100K miles, almost at 30K and although it's more maintenance than an accord it hasn't really been any worse than other cars. Most expensive thing was an $800 job for steering pump and tensioner belt
>>
>>14233312
You have no idea what you're talking about
B5s are fucking bulletproof. Don't believe me? Look at ANY reliability records for early 00s models.
Enjoy your Geo fucking lol
>>
Clean your battery terminals pleb.
Check your grounds.
>>
>>14233330
desu I've heard that the S4 is actually pretty good. Best friend got fucked so hard on an s6 and a4. They loved Audi before an had a station wagon that was really reliable. Later they got the s6 and an a4 wagon and boy did they go through a literal horror story.
>>
>>14233330

roll start it

>>14233370
ive heard great things about the s4 as wel and id love one
>>

Cant bump start, trust me ive done this many times, im oddly parked in a driveway and cant get it moving on the gravel/snow unfortunately
>>
>>14233401

I recently had a problem with my volvo s80 very similar to what you're having and it was indeed a bad battery. I replaced the battery and it was fine after that. I'd try some of the other cheap stuff mentioned first like cleaning the terminals and checking your grounds just to make sure because batteries are sorta expensive.
>>
>>14233396

Well, considering the first two posts are "Check your fucking battery", I think it's well covered.

YOU are the 'stupid fucking kid' you retarded bitch.
>>
>>14233412
at a bad angle to roll start anon
>>
>>14233414
Get your friends to push it
>>
>>14233420
Holy shit I triggered you so hard you stupid nigger.

Also neither of the first two posts said anything about cleaning the terminals you dipshit.
>>
>>14233431
only me and one bro here, not enough unfortunately
>>
>>14233415
ill be sure to, thanks anon
>>
>>14233155
If the starter motor is bad and your battery is good then adding another battery into the equation won't help
Could always try roll starting it
>>
>>14233480
ahhh gotcha, and not currently an option
>>
id like to thank all anons who helped and from what ive gathered, a bad battery may be my issue, ill be back
>>
>>14233401
Yeah you've probably killed the battery now that you've tried starting it so many times. If it didn't start the first 20 times why the fuck would it start now.
Get some jumper cables and charge it up for a few minutes or hook it up to a battery charger.
Then clean your terminals, grounds and connections on the starter.
If it still has starting issues get a new battery they're like $100 at walmart you damn poorfag.

Bad ground somewhere
Try the battery cables first, black one might just be loose or corroded

Have fun, once electrical issues start it's only downhill from there
>>
>>14233664

Because the stripes and the black rims on a shitbox A4 Audi wouldn't have given you cancer already.
>>

well, shit

>70 percent
What the fuck does that even mean?
>>
>>14235920
the amount of charge it had? something like that

my terminala are clean, not sure wat do
>>
>>14236002
You can't measure a battery's current charge level just by the idle volts.
>>
>>14236012
look at me being retarded, welp, first thing in the morning ill be looking for a jumper cable to start cancelling things out
>>
>>14233155

get a fucking obd chink cable and vagcom and plug the freaking thing to the car and monitor it for the failure you fucking tool
>>
>>14236063
already did, p0441 purge valve error, gg though anon :-)
>>
>>14236074

I didn't mean checking for fault your fuckstick.

I mean using the monitoring module and check whenever you have a no start condition what the fuck is failing.
>>
>>14236186
looks like i played myself, will do that as well, thanks
>>
Also like anon above stated if u can get your whole car to autozone they can test not only the battery bUT alternator and I'm pretty sure starter as well. Alternator they can do in the car but starter you have to pull out and bring inside I think
>>
>>14236280

And that's what you get by buying a piece of shit parts bin car.
>>
>>14236317
slow your roll anon, i dont know about all that now
