Actually, fuck the greentext story. He was driving me and nana back home from a diner, and we came to a 4-way. He ignores the stop sign and blows RIGHT THROUGH the intersection while taking a LEFT TURN when there is ONCOMING TRAFFIC. We barely missed a fucking DODGE RAM, maybe by a foot or so. Old fucks' excuse? He saw a green light. AT A STOP SIGN.

Hardly his first offense, he makes one or five every time I drive with him, but that was his worst. I'm just jumping in the drivers seat next time, I don't care if he thinks I'm a "maniac" for going 9kph over the limit and take corners at more than 0.1g

He's looking to get a new car now. What is the most safe/nanny-tier you can buy? He won't buy Nip because MUH PEARL HARBOUR but he likes Korean cars for some inexplicable reason.

As much as I agree with most of them being very bad drivers, there's a simple reason why they are still allowed to drive: because if they were forced to give up cars the retirement homes would be choke full.
Let's face, my grandparents are still well capable of taking care of themselves, but the chance of them getting to the doc without a car is literally 0. So they end up driving about 5 routes that they have to regularly, and ask relatives to drive them for anything else. As much as I'd want them to stop driving for everyone's safetey, it'd take the little mobility and independance they have left...
It's probably the same way with the rest.
They are aware that they are bad drivers. But they lack alternatives.

I was talking to my father about this today. I think that once people hit 60, a driving test (written included) should be mandatory every other year, once they hit 70, it should be mandatory annually, 80? fuck i want to say manning a vehicle should be illegal but that's not very fair.

I totally agree that they'd better stop driving completely. So do they. But, well, doesn't work.

Also, there's no reason to start additional tests at 60. People start getting real problems past 70, except if they've been really bad drivers before. And I've seen 80 year-olds actually compete rather well in hillclimb racing here. So general bans would be stupid.

That isn't how it fucking works. The sensors do not work off of weight. They work off of electromagnetic interference. The induction loop creates a magnetic field that is disrupted when a car stops over it.

Weight Sensors at a red light are not a thing.

So how close do I have to be to it?

A couple days ago I was trailing behind an old F-150 which was driving behind a Camry.

Out of nowhere, this old fuck in a mid-2000s Buick makes a left out of a McDonald's parking lot, right in front of the Camry. Camry slams on its brakes, missing the Buick by maybe six inches. Guy driving the F-150 couldn't react fast enough and rear ends the Camry. The Buick drives off without a care in the world.

Thankfully I was far enough behind that I wasn't really at risk of causing a pileup, but it really fucking irked me that it was 100% the Buick's fault, and the old bag got away with it scot-free. Should have got the plate number and stuck around, but I didn't.

In Ireland, relatively rainy day. I'm following my grandfather out to a garage/workshop so I can drive him home while his car gets serviced before the NCT (basic roadworthiness test here in Ireland).

We get separated at a red light about halfway through my hometown and he just keeps on going because to be completely honest he was a bit of a halfwit at the best of times.

Anyway, I'm not too bothered because I know the way to where we're going and assume he'll pull up at a parking space to wait for me or something.

NOPE. Nothing doing.

He stops on the median between the northbound and southbound slip-roads (on-ramps) at the far end of the town to wait for me.

Then he proceeds to cut me off while getting back onto the road.
