Mazda did everything that mattered, the 2nd gen escort was essentially a Mazda 323 for all intents and purposes. The GT Model is the one you want, coming with a Mazda-designed 5 speed and a 1.8L I4 Nearly identical to that found in the NA2 Miata.

My last car was an LQ1. I didn't want another car that would be a nightmare to work on. My Saturn is 10 times easier to work on than your autotragic trailerpark special.
That said, I do like your car. But this Saturn is the easiest thing to work on ever.
>>11377913
>My Saturn is 10 times easier to work on than your autotragic trailerpark special.
The thing is, my trailerpark special rarely needs working on. Right now is the exception since it needs a 4th gear assembly and solenoids, but I could STILL put a battery in it today and put a fierce hurting on your lego machine.

The transmission isn't that Saturn VTI shit or some terribad GM Hydramatic.
The Transmission is a Getrag 5 speed made in Italy.
How the previous owner managed to fuck an F23 is beyond me. But a replacement was just $200 from a junkyard with a warranty.
>>11377993
>GM Hydramatic.
That's terribly vague. Every GM transmission since the 70s has been branded a HydraMatic, even with the nomenclature of 4T60 and 4L60.
>>11377993
I've mulled over doing the Getrag swap in the GTP, but the cost outweighs my interest.

>TH400 - ✓

>THM425 - ✓
>4L80E - ✓
While those /are/ good, they're also all large and heavy and tend to sap power - which isn't usually good unless you're planning to brute force everything with ludicrous power.
>>11378061
The TH350 is weaker than a TH400, at least when you're working with a torquey motor, especially big blocks.
The THM400 is FWD and the THM425 is a better FWD trans. They used those in the big block FWDs.
>While those /are/ good, they're also all large and heavy and tend to sap power
I swear people blow this problem way out of proportion. If you're running an auto trans, it's going to be heavy and sap power. If you don't want that, run a rock crusher and shut yer mouth.
>>11378037
The THM425 was a bastard child that never should have been. Good luck finding parts.
>>11378088
It was stronger than the THM400, and definitely stronger than the THM325 that ended up replacing it.
>>11378077
Yes, autos are heavier and sap more power than manuals, but using a bigger transmission compounds the problem more than building up a smaller transmission. Between, say, the 350 and the 400, it's not so drastic, but just look up there between the 4T60 and 4T80. That IS a major difference.
Also, an exception to the rule of bigger number = better: THM 200-4R. WAY better than a 700r4/4L60.
>>11378103
The 200-4R is shit, though. None of the overdrive transmissions with the exception of the 4L80E could really be described as "good".

I own one. Can confirm it's a pain in the ass to work on.
8 hours to change the alternator.
It is the first American designed and built DOHC V6. The Taurus SHO engine was designed and built in Japan, unlike this.
The manual was offered from 1991-1993. Sales of the manual cars were abysmal (about 3k a year per model) so from 94-97, it was automatic only.
The Funny thing is the engine was heavily detuned FOR the automatic. In pre-production, it made 281 HP, but the high revving bastard kept destroying every FWD automatic they thew at it.
