Poland's parliament on Wednesday approved new legislation that gives the government control of state radio and television stations in a move that has raised EU concern.
Following a heated debate, the lower chamber voted 232-152 with 34 abstentions to adopt amendments to the media law that were proposed by the ruling conservative Law and Justice party.
If it takes effect, the legislation would give the Treasury Minister the authority to appoint heads of the state-run radio and TV, would limit the number of members in the supervisory boards and the boards of managers and would terminate the terms of the current management, appointed by the previous establishment.
The Law and Justice argues that under current leadership state radio and TV fail to fulfill their role of uniting and educating the nation and serve as means of propaganda for the previous ruling team, now in the opposition.
Opponents say that the new legislation would threaten media independence and freedom of expression, by putting them under direct government control.
The amendments need approval from the Senate and the president, who are also controlled by the ruling party and are expected to grant their consent.
Deputy head of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans wrote to Poland's foreign and justice ministers on Wednesday to express concern for Poland's media freedom and to seek assurance that the new legislation respects EU principles concerning the rights of the media.
Poland's Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said late Wednesday he has not yet received "any such letter."
The fast pace and the nature of the reforms undertaken by the government since it took power last month have led to large street protests in Warsaw and some other Polish cities and have alarmed some EU leaders.
>The United States' media has been the Democrats' propaganda machine for over a decade
That's truly hilarious in a country where Fox News Channel has been the number one name in news in America for the last 15 years, going by their own commercials.
I don't understand the fuss. Isn't this state-run, taxpayer-funded, media? Why wouldn't elected representatives have authority over it?
I would rather not have a state media entirely. Anyway, all this outrage doesn't really make sense to me, and is tripping my bullshit alarm. My guess is that it was a leftist propaganda organization and the other news organizations of Europe (aka leftist propaganda organizations) are reacting defensively.
I doubt we'll see that. I can't see reactionary parties gaining enough steam (admittedly they have grown) to actually go beyond being large minority parties, within western Europe. Eastern Europe might, but they always lean a lot more to those kinds of politics than the west.
>I don't understand the fuss. Isn't this state-run, taxpayer-funded, media? Why wouldn't elected representatives have authority over it?
For a lot of countries, they make a point to separate the state media from the current political party, to limit biases and media control. It's like if the BBC was controlled directly by whichever party won elections for a current parliament. Or if US political parties dictated what PBS broadcasted.
>It's like if the BBC was controlled directly by whichever party won elections for a current parliament. Or if US political parties dictated what PBS broadcasted.
That's a moot point when democrats or labour voters make up 95% of BBC/PBS employees.
No it's not. Obviously people have their biases, but it's important we don't let people have control of the media just because they have power. There's plenty of opportunity for conservatives to work for those institutions (and I'd argue, if you listen to PBS at all, they don't really have an overall narrative) and the government has no control over that.
Wouldn't that just mean there's more people who will vote against those reactionary parties? Besides, at least with countries people like to get excited about, e.g. France, their voting system makes it very difficult for a far-right party like FN to ever gain control. If the Socialists or the Republicans lose an election, those voters will then often swing towards the other one before voting for FN. And when you have a voting populace like that, it's unlikely you'll see a real major swing in who most align themselves with.
>There's plenty of opportunity for conservatives to work for those institutions
This is reddit tier delusion anon. If you honestly think ideological super majorities are friendly to their enemies, you lack life experience.
>and I'd argue, if you listen to PBS at all, they don't really have an overall narrative
Arguing that would just make you a moron. Open the NYT, PBS, and FOX, in separate tabs and compare headlines. All three do a decent job keeping blatant propaganda out of their actual articles. But what matters far more than content is coverage.
Parties don't mean anything when people are motivated. Take Trump. He tapped into the disgust with political correctness and pussy footing politicians, and now the political landscape has altered to suit him. And with the crisis that France is facing there's going to be a lot of disgust.
>Have you read PBS?
Evidently you don't or you'd know that PBS does television.
I do listen to NPR every morning. They are biased, and they don't cover stories that don't fit the standard liberal narrative.
And NPR's online presence is cuck tier.
>Evidently you don't or you'd know that PBS does television.
PBS actually has a whole suite of services, which has written stories on their website.
They also have a podcast.
NPR is not PBS, they are different.
>Hieu Minh Nguyen challenges white supremacy in poems about his family
>Poet Robin Coste Lewis evokes the black female form across history
Yeah, real neutral. Also who the fuck reads newshour online?
>If you honestly think ideological super majorities are friendly to their enemies, you lack life experience.
Do you even socialize anon? Have you ever been outside? A statement of this nature applies to a minority of zealots.
Poland is doing stupid. ...they try to do like Italy. ..but Italy did that 20 years ago. ..is not good do stupid things if you know that is wrong. .......Poland population do something now or is going to be to late. ...
It's actually just butthurt journalists who hate that their favorite party lost the last election. If you read those articles you will notice the source is usually someone from newspapers that hate the current government, Sikorski's wife or some shit like that.
Only public media will be brought under ruling party control. It happens every goddamn time only this time people are extra butthurt and annoying. There's absolutely nothing out of ordinary happening in Poland right now. In fact I love it. I love seeing those journalists I hate writting on Twitter every two minutes like goddamn lunatics. I believe some of them are legit crazy right now. It's beautiful.
unfortunately polishfag here and I want to tell you something my anon friends
the goverment election was 1,5 month ago and 50% of people voted in poll. Thats about 15 000 000 pole (which are able to elect, Poland is 38mln country). And only 37,5% of them voted on Law and Justice so it's about 18% of whole polacks (about 5,5 mln of people). Now every party which is in opposition to the L&J don't givafuk but strange things are happening. People are protesting, Kaczyński (boss of L&J) wanna be Putin and have infinitie power in country, reflect, nlock and inviglate internet etc. L&J has the biggest election group in bad educated people (no education, only primary school), old Cathols (70 years old grannies with jesus christ cross in hands) and house-free (xD) people. People who are - lets say - fools that don't want to work, they want money for nothing.
I am an elector of libertarian party called .Modern and you can me anything u want.
How to solve the problem? Just close free borders with Poland (Schengen) and people will just fix it. Using force :3
PiS cancur detected
Yeah living with modern won't be easy for people who don't want to work or only make kids
Your argument that banking is invalid (ur mind seems to be disabled too - autism?). Guy who is actually most "with banks" is Szydlo friend and vice-prime minister - from Law and Liberty. I forgot the name, but you will find it in few seconds (if you can use satanic search engine called google).
Actually most simillar thing about PO and .Modern is tax plan. PO wanted it to be 16%-16%-16%, while .Modern idea was 15%-15%-15%.
Aw, I forgot. Enjoy your independent President and prime minister. They are doing things as THEY want, not as Jarosław, aren't they?
The EU commission is planning to revoke Polands right to vote within the EU if Poland doesn't step back from this decision. Is Poland the only EU country that's causing the EU butthurt on this scale?
EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger said in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that he wants to apply the so-called constitutional mechanism in Poland. That means that Brussels will demand the Polish government a modification of the law that threatens to jeopardize the free press. Poland would thus be placed under the strict supervision of the European Commission.
>PiS cancur detected
Only cancer here is you. You are just another leftie who can only complain about PiS.
PO, PiS, .Modern is one communist piece of shit.
>Enjoy your independent President. They are doing things as THEY want, not as Jarosław
Yes, it is better than let the germans rules poland. remember PO is pro german party. Even merkel came to Poland to support Tusk (PO ex-leader) in elections.
>Actually most simillar thing about PO and .Modern is tax plan
And old members of PO in .Modern, and pseudo-libertarian ideology, and a voters who again were tricked.
>You are just another leftie who can only complain about PiS.
How can a leftie complain about PiS, when PiS is strongly socialist and in power?
> .Modern is one communist piece of shit.
their political views are literally opposite to autoritharian-socialist ones, they're strongly free-market and fairly liberal
People who do not understand what is going on with all this media fuss in Poland - here is what is happening in simple words. Currently journalist who were criticising PIS (Law&Justice right wing party) in past and currently has been fired. Managers, people on high positions in public media has been fired (or 'resigned by themselves'). In their places new people has been hired who were associated with far right party media, catholic media and PIS party itself. Not all people have journalism or media background - it is the level of loyalty to the party and its goals that decides on it. So media becomes a government's propaganda and shows only news from right wing perspective and PIS calls it pluralism of media - what sounds like Ministry of Truth from Orwell's 1984. This is extremely sad time to freedom of speech which is currently diminishing in Poland.
Exacly same thing happend when PO was rulling party only difference is they didnt bother with papertrail. Anyone who thinks media can be impartial and free of politics is retard. Only individual journalists can be impartial but they have to make a choice if they want to speak truth or pay their bills.
