The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Ekkehard Ehlers - Plays
>ambient, drone, EAI

This is a compilation of five seperate, two-part works, each one having a pretty different style but generally sticking to the general label of “experimental electronic”. “Plays Cornelius Cardew” and “Plays John Cassavetes” are for the most part very droney and ambient, with the second half of the latter piece looping a string progression from The Beatles’ “Good Night” to create an interesting gently rocking rhythm which I ended up liking more thatn the original song. “Plays Hubert Fichte” and “Plays Albert Ayler” are much more experimmental and EAI influenced, mostly blending a series of abstract samples and electronic noises to create a dense collage of sound that’s immediately pretty jarring but strangely calming once a lot of elements are all going off at once. The outlier on this album and one of the standout tracks is the final one, “Plays Robert Johnson”, which takes a minimal house approach and ends up being by far the most accessible and even dancy track on an album of abstract and obtuse experimentation. Overall, this had some really incredible sound design and the diversity of the different pieces made it thoroughly engaging the whole way through. However, with such a mixed bag of different sounds and styles there end up being a couple tracks that pale in comparison to their other halves, notably “Cornelius Cardew 2” and “Hubert Fichte 2”. Overall a very solid compilation!

>Randomer - We Laugh, We Scream
Freak Dub is probably the best Randomer track and the best thing on this release, it's heavy as fuck. The first track has some great acid lines and the vocal samples complement the aggressiveness pretty well. Nar is slower and prepares you for the bass he delivers in the last track.

all tracks are a-okay

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xkvsGTPgcs

> Baby Doc & The Dentist – Catalan Dawn Pt.1
Found this because of the commie aesthetic, stayed for the B side. Catalan Dawn has some worthwhile moments when the acid carries the track, but I don't like the synth that starts at the beginning and the beat isn't all that exciting. At least at it's end it foreshadows the vocal samples that give Catalan Rising it's power. I may not like the guitar that kicks off the B side, but I get lost when the track brings the acid lines and the vocals together.

Hey this was great, very emotional for some reason.
I loved the ending a lot

If you want feedback for future projects I would personally like it more it was a bit more dynamic somehow; had slow careful build-ups, had parts that were audibly quieter than others..... idk, personal preference but yeah I think it would be more interesting then.

Great stuff, excited for more. Even bought it B-)

I said I'd given up, but I finished the chart anyways. Ends up there were a couple not completely boring albums left, which is cool.

>Gangstagrass - Gangstagrass
Combining bluegrass and hip-hop is actually not a bad idea. I think the fact that Gangstagrass employs a live band helps sell the concept as more than just a dumb novelty; the instrumentals have a lot more depth than looped samples alone would. The one problem is that the rapping simply isn’t up to snuff, and it’s only exacerbated by the fact that the album way too long and full of filler. It seems like this debut was more of a proof of concept than a serious attempt at an album, but that’s all the more reason to skip it. I hear that Gangstagrass achieved some mainstream popularity after doing the theme song for a TV show though, so maybe their newer albums are more polished.
2.5

>The Mad Conductor - Renegade Space Rock
The goofy old-school rapping and beats featuring rock riffs make me think of the Beastie Boys. Hell, this dude was even in a hardcore punk band too before moving to rap. The only difference is that the production is primarily based in reggae and ska, and the lyrics are a lot more surreal. I’m not big on the old-school style, especially the monosyllabic rhymes, but everything else made for a very interesting listen.

>Detektivbyrån - E18 Album
After those two balaeric beat dream pop albums, I’m glad that I enjoyed at least one of the Swedish albums on this chart. Detektivbyrån have a unique brand of instrumental folktronica that is cute, but not too cute. The instrumentation is probably what helps them stand out, as they ditched the standard acoustic guitar for accordion and music box, and use their electronics very subtly. The result is an intimate, almost pastoral sound that encompasses a wide range of emotions without sounding disjointed (even more impressive since this is a compilation). There’re a few piano-oriented pieces that feel pretty generic, but I’d definitely recommend this to anyone looking for more “comfy” music.
3.5

>Paint In Watercolour - Flow
Wow, it’s Japanese shoegaze that came out before Loveless! Except the lyrics are in English and it sounds more like Ride style alt-rock than MBV, so what’s the point? The closer seems like a step in the right direction though, so I’ll have to take a look at their full length albums at some point.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love (1967)
>psychedelic rock, blues rock

Probably the worst of their three. Some solid songs ("Spanish Castle Music", "Little Wing"), great instrumental work and vocals (duh), and the laid-back sound is a welcome change. That laid-back sound is also the albums worst aspect, however. Hendrix was at his best at it's heaviest, when he displayed his skills with no holds barred. This is why Electric Ladyland and certain tracks from Are You Experienced ("Fire", "Manic Depression") work so damn well, they're unabashedly virtuosic yet they still retain a badass, soulful energy, something that this album totally lacks. Still decent, still totally underwhelming.

Yat-Kha - Yenisei-Punk (1995)
>tuvan throat singing

Instrumentally, definitely the best throat singing record I've heard. To call this straight-up "throat singing" is honestly a bit of a misnomer, it's a psych folk album that just happens to have throat singing vocals. The instrumentals are dense and textural, still managing to retain a certain rollicking, freeform nature. The solely vocal tracks aren't that hot, the vocals lack the intensity and compositional density that the best throat singing records have, but I'll be damned if the lead guy's voice isn't incredible, he seriously sounds exactly like a Jew's harp at some points.

at this point the point of todd's character is to show the benefits of living a life for the point of living, an antithesis to the rest of the cast who choose to ground themselves in goals in materials, so it's complete disconnect from the rest of the plot works for me. that's also probably why the asexuality thing is included. another layer of separation, both from the rest of the cast and sexual desires. this will possibly be explored next season assuming they do stick to the ending after season 5 thing.
todd got in some good lines this season. the samba joke had me dying.
also pb needs to dump diane and get with anybody else in the show at this point. he deserves better.

Damn, I didn't remember this being good. It's kind of a shame that people flock to semantic compositions over goreshit's other non-lolicore releases just because it's a Max Richter remix EP.

I don't know if I can agree with that, but mostly because I wouldn't count all the pitch shifted pop remixes lolicore. my love feels all wrong is definitely good though, it's the most popular lolicore album for a reason.

Yeah it's dope. It's hard to pinpoint someone as "underappreciated" but I think Del is in that category. Super unique flow and a very consistent style. I'd say the same about Spice 1 on my collage too.

I was also surprised at how much I liked 17 Seconds. I've been on a bit of a Cure tear lately and that one's up there.

R+7 kinda sticks out from his discography because of the midi sound fonts, but it's more complex than his earlier arrangements (ambient drones, brushes with noise). Those lack the experimentation he's known for in his latest albums, as his older works are based around his signature sound. Maybe after R+7, listen to Betrayed in the Octagon or Ruined Lives.

No one's rated this album on RYM for almost 6 years. Ain't that a hipster victory.

>Cherryboy Function - Something Electronic
Something electronic is right, because I'm a bleep amateur and can't find much info on what genre this is. My best guess is tech house, but it doesn't help that there seems to be a fair amount of inconsistency from song to song. There're moments like 5 tracks in when suddenly Fogbound comes on, a song that's extremely stripped down and moves at a glacial crawl compared to everything else, or the closer which is the only track with a prominent melody. It feels like every single track has something that sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the tracks; it's as if I'm listening to a singles collection rather than an album. Luckily most of the tracks are at least decent; the only ones I disliked were the aforementioned Fogbound, and Fall Out which featured blaring sirens that were simply grating. Luckily it seems like this guy has some non-album releases, so I'd definitely recommend trying those out instead.

literally this post when it comes to trip up's taste

>Birchville Cat Motel - Beautiful Speck Triumph
>Ambient, glitch

I can enjoy big drone albums, like Eleh - Homage. But that album was much thicker, visceral, like sludge coming out of a speaker. White Ground Elder is more of a lawnmower, kinda like Thomas Brinkmann's "Orange" combined with Valerio Tricoli penchant for musique concrete, and the instrumentation on Trembling Frost Spires is reminiscent of the experimentation I hear from Brian Eno's Obscure label.

Sentimental strings and a piano (more similarities to Duster) emerge from Speck Fears, and Its More Fun To Compute rebutts it with a flatline tone-- the harmonies built around it are quite nice. But man, if the title track was the only thing on this album, I'd easily give it a 8.

I've made a lot of comparisons because I felt like I've heard a lot of this before, and at no point was I really interested in its design until the end. The payoff is great, but not worth the cost.

5/10

>Love, Claire - Love, Claire
>Slowcore

It's even more sad because of how lo-fi the mixing is. Still a decent, relatively unknown release, Ghost is a great finisher.

6/10

>Autechre - Tri repetae
Autechre does what Autechre does best, occasionally doing it for too long on the less notable tracks. Whilst mostly unimpressionable with rolling beats and miniature sirens, Rsdio is probably the catchiest track I've heard from Autechre. Sounds like music that'd belong on an old spaceship.

Favorite tracks: Leterel, Stud, Overand, Rsdio

wanted to put some thoughts on this one somewhere

its a really weird feeling album to me. its not as thematically strong as any of his past stuff, even his compilation album. its sort of identity-less i think. they're really well written songs but there's a little something missing in them i can't exactly pin point. something emotional? something musical? i dunno. in the end though maus' worst is better than 90% of any music i'll ever hear and its a really good album on its own. 8/10?

also i'm pretty sure "touchdown" is the best song about football ever. how many even are there?

ah fuck i got cast in the musical lmao

Mark Lanegan - Whiskey for the Holy Ghost (1994)
>singer/songwriter, folk rock

Perhaps the most fitting album/title/cover combination ever. Every inch of this album is soaked in whiskey and cigarette smoke, from Lanegan's powerful, scratchy voice all the way to the pained melancholy of the alt-country instrumentals. Lanegan's grunge roots from his time in Screaming Trees rear their ugly head a big more often than I'd like them too, but this is really the only negative I can give in earnest. A lovely, melancholic, powerful album.

i think i'm in one of those phases where everything i listen to is pretty great and it's making me doubt my rating system.
flower boy is not as good as cherry bomb imo, but really only because i liked how many risks cherry bomb took. it's an extremely solid album, easily the most consistent i've heard from him.
saw qotsa live a few days ago, and villains is for sure an album meant to be heard live. it rounded out the slow, paced sound of the like clockwork tracks. would recommend seeing them if you haven't already.

Will try CBL soon, really interested in seeing what this stuff is like, onto track 3 of Dreams and they really seemed to step it up on track 2. I'm starting to get the feeling that the rym map thing is going to really ruin how I view music in the long-term.

To be honest given your name I always imagined that you would be one of those insanely experienced Turkish migrants who works as a low-pay car mechanic just on the outskirts of a big city smoking cigarettes on a daily basis and occasionally giving really deep, omniscient lectures to the odd passerby with the sternest look on the planet. well the name is of iranian origin (dont ask me why it's popular in latin america) so that's probably it. and also tripping as 'emir' probably adds to it.

Blues Control & Laraaji - FRKWYS Vol. 8
>ambient, electronic, avant folk

So, apparently the version on RYM and the version on Spotify are different, because the one I listened to (the latter version) has two super long tracks at the end. They ended up being the highlights of the album for me, though, so I guess I’ll just talk about them. First, there’s the 35 minute behemoth “Somebody Scream”, the first half of which is an imporvisational folk jam with the similar traditional vocals as the previous track, but elevated to a really blissful atmospheric and uplifting mood with reverbed-as-hell piano and guitar chords, a steady and buzzing drone, and the sheer length that your mind ends up soaking in the same chords. After the 16 minute mark, the track momentarily becomes much more ambient, allowing the steady rhythm of the earleir section to fade out while more meditative vocals wordlessly add atmosphere to a serene backdrop of tones, before a final rythmic section on tabla drums and some kind of percussive string instrument rounds the end of the track off.
“Astral Jam” is a much more upbeat and modern sounding track, drawing influence from disco and krautrock in its constant driving beat surrounded by strange, otherworldly electronics and effects. It’s a very cerebral and funky song, seemingly acting as the more beat-driven, electronic counterpart to the spiritual and organic “Somebody Scream”. These two final tracks really end the album on a great note, but they almost completely overshadow the album’s earlier moments, which are much more subtle, freeform, and ultimately forgettable. So strange that the main release on RYM excludes the best parts?

The two short demos by Timeghoul collected here make for a nice comparative listen. Whilst the quality of the compositions, recordings, and performances is markedly increased across the two years between the earlier Tumultuous Travelings and later Panaramic Twighlight, it's very much the same band. The blustering, fuzzy guitar tones, angular and chromatic riffs, and spirited if rough vocal performances carry continuity across each release. In fact, considered as demos, these two tapes are impressive without doubt, especially with regard to the long but nuanced compositions. Nevertheless, the quality is still heavily weighted to the back, where the band seem to be articulating a precociously individual voice, especially where they use achingly slow vocal harmonies and guitar leads to evoke the beatless cadence of sacred medieval music - a strikingly original and successful touch. The step-up in sound quality is certainly appreciated too, and further pushes the Panaramic Twighlight tracks out of the previous work's league. As a compilation the inconsistency is unfortunate, but that won't stop me recommending the second tape on its own merits.

1992 - 1994 (2012) by Timeghoul, recommended by s

Sigh. I really loved that single.

>The National - Sleep Well Beast (2017)

I've been looking forward to this album since it was announced, and "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness" instantly made my shortlist for my favorite songs this year. Despite all that, there was still just a little bit of apprehension leading up to the release date.

Both Boxer and High Violet thoroughly soundtracked my teenage life at certain bittersweet points in a way that I've rarely felt since, and the latter is generally just a continuation of the sound on the former. Accessible yet still lends itself well to repeated listening in a way that unfolds the longer you spend with it. It happens to be a pertinent point here, because I knew early on that I appreciated the catchy moments (of which there are plenty) but also sensed that there were aspects in its intricate layers that would just require time to assess. The follow-up, Trouble Will Find Me, had some of these moments but interspersed with a newfound melodramatic songs predicated on abstract or esoteric feelings. Singles like "Don't Swallow the Cap" or "I Need My Girl" lacked the visceral emotion of earlier singles like "Bloodbuzz Ohio".
>>
>>75083693
Because that's much of the appeal of The National. These are indeed straight-laced, normal guys with existential problem, but regardless of how banal the drama is--some might call it first-world melodrama--there is an honest and appropriate expression that feels refreshing. That's at its best. Unfortunately, the style on Sleep Well Beast is a vague, melodramatic continuation of the lesser songs from the predecessor.

It all edges closer to whiny once and for all. I only have to say that because I can't relate to or comprehend this resigned wallowing that pervades the album in lieu of, you know, conventionally structured songs with progressions and hooks that build off of each other like the fun National we know.

It's not worth rehashing over and over how this mostly sounds like a bummer, but all in an inspirationless way rather than an artistic expression you might hear from other similar recent examples like Vulnicura or Skeleton Tree. I couldn't stop thinking about how it even sounds like The Postal Service with the baffling choice of front-to-back digital drum tracks.

part 1 of letov

Кoллeжcкий aceccop - Sex Bomben Auf Engelland

jammy experimental indie rock similar to tful282 (including their cartoonish and funny and wild vocals) although much less focused on consistent riffs and very focused on the jamming. it can be tedious at times, especially the large parts without any vocals, because of the homogeny of the sound rather than the structures of the songs because they're written interestingly, just missing some potential variety.

this is also apparently a concept album but i can't pick up on that aspect because of the language barrier. i'm definitely missing out on an important part of it but oh well. songs should be able to carry themselves outside of their concept right? and they do that for the most part. its a really fun album to listen to. i think my favorite song is the last one. it's really sweet.

7/10, cool listen

Diet Cig - Swear I'm Good at This (2017)
>indie pop

Wow, a garagey indie pop record with spunky vocals, simple lyrics, and raw instrumentation, haven't heard that one before. Luciano is a really good vocalist, that I can't deny. She's technically really solid, her tone is just really pleasant, and there's a sheer, unfettered sense of fun and joy in her vocals that elevates this at least a bit beyond the doldrums of most albums like this. Still, there's not a shred of originality in any of the songs, lyrics, or performances, and even at half an hour it's still a slog to get through

ポルカドットスティングレイ [Polkadot Stingray] - 大正義
>Power Pop, RYMcore

I'm surprised I enjoy this, given that things that get branded with "J-rock" annoy me. But this is a very consistent and catchy collection of artsy power pop songs with no filler to speak of, with some killer guitar playing. The vocals are a bit annoying when they fall into J-poppy cliches (such as the barely sung bridges), which probably doesn't bother the target audience of this. I'm surprised nobody in /daily/ has heard this (as far as I can tell), seeing as most people here are weebs to some extent and it has a decent amount of RYM cred.

Also, it'll never get out of your head.

คณะ อุดมศิลป์ เชียงใหม่ - Funeral Music of Chiang Mai (????)
>thai classical music

Sounds more like music for a party than a funeral, but I digress. It's really singular, easily one of the most unique albums I've ever heard. Subtlety is certainly not its strong suit, and oftentimes its barrages of sound (not to mention the less-than-stellar recording quality) get to be a tad too much, yet its instrumental range is broad and endlessly interesting. Every track utilizes new, idiosyncratic instruments in really interesting ways, every track sounds similar yet none of them sound a same, it's all incredibly engrossing to listen to.

3.0+

Konrad Sprenger - Stack Music (2017)
>electroacoustic, post-minimalism

I know fuck-all about what algorithms and such went into these pieces, all I know is that they created some cool music. It blends the old and the new really perfectly. As the genre tags suggest, this has a primitivism element to it with its deft, kaleidoscopic guitar collages. What it does new is completely take out the folk element to these pieces, creating something new, alien, futuristic, yet vaguely familiar and comfortable. Misses it's mark slightly in it's strictly electronic moments, but a dense, effortlessly intriguing ride all the way through.

3.0+

Nils Frahm - Spaces (2013)
>modern classical, ambient

The piano pieces here are absolutely beautiful, Frahm can play the hell out of the instrument without making his performances overtly virtuosic, they're tasteful and subtle. He really amps up this subtlety on the ambient pieces, to much more mixed results. It's pretty, but totally hollow and flat. Over and over Frahm dedicates 10+ minutes of time to pieces that go nowhere, and it wears very thin by the end of the album.

The Buddhist perception of death is very different from the western one, so the upbeat festive nature is of no surprise. It's still one of the most fascinating albums I've heard, I hope a documentary filmmaker captures a whole performance someday, as I hear the visual aspect is just as interesting.

Foma & Yarn - Self Titled

real spooky lofi forest music. deep reverby sparse guitar plucks echoing, occasional simple drum beats, ethereal droning synths barely there blending in with the slight tape hiss, and a deep ghostly voice. i imagine Foma being some kind of dark church leader in robes and performing a ritual to summon a spirit, with this music playing in the background. great atmosphere. i would love to know the lyrics if you have them letov.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory (1970)
>swamp rock

The easy-going nature of most of this isn't done as well as it is on Green River, it seems poppier, less gritty, and less effortlessly cool, I'm talking mostly about the half-assed rock and roll tracks here and there. When it strays away from that, this kicks ass. The opener and a few other tracks that focus more on bluesy jams are absolutely incredible, Fogerty's vocals and guitar work are both amazing, and the band just fits so perfectly together. They even do poppy well here and there, like on "Lookin' Out My Back Door" and "Who'll Stop the Rain", I'm just not as huge on this as I am on Green River.

3.0-

Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor's Guide to Earth (2016)
>alt-country, country rock

Metamodern Sounds focuses more on Simpson's guitar work, whereas this is a clear display of his vocal prowess, and he does a damn good job at showing them off. He belts every track, and he does a great job, his vocals are soulful without being overbearing, he's easily one of the best country singers working to day. The soul-influenced instrumentation, on the other hand, can often be overbearing and suffocating. Nothing here sounds as freeflowing as it does on Metamodern Sounds, it's more calculated and bombastic, and it loses a lot of its energy and pizzaz. Still, there aren't many people making country as good as this nowadays.

Tourney updates later.

>Before Sunrise (1995)

Director Richard Linklater describes this film as being about those brief connections we have with others that were the most important moments of his life. In that respect, it would be too easy to read this from the perspective of it just another Romance film. Rather, the circumstances here present only a brief, momentary slice to project the nature of love and romantic relationships.

So, what's it about? In terms of on-screen plot, two strangers spend a day together wandering around a foreign city before their departure the next day, sharing thoughts on love, fantasies, and time, and developing a bond. Both characters express disillusionment of love after failed relationships.

What are we to make of Jesse and Celine? As evidenced in the ensuing debates (at least before the sequels were announced), everyone brings just a little bit of their own experience to weigh in on what the relationship means. What is romance...an enactment of fantasies predicated on its temporal nature? By that reading, we have the ultimate romance here: meeting a beautiful stranger in a foreign land who re-instills in us a sense of hope and wonder only to part indefinitely. The taboo is whether the characters will meet again. Both share from experience a knowledge of what happens to fully developed relationships. The sacredness of the encounter. In an abstract sense, the third character throughout the film is the overarching sense of dread.

Linklater's style is of immense self-awareness and sincerity. This is apparent in interviews with him, by the way. There's a sense that he has no interest in deception or leading our reading of plainly presented events.

took a little break.

v/a - The Great Completto Pordenone
some post punk and minimal synth goodness from Italy, was expecting boredom but it genuinely got me interested in the scene. For sure will be looking into it sometime.

Soweto Kinch - A Life In The Day(...)
I like jazzy hh and this is probably as good as it gets in that department, but I found the storytelling off putting. It has a concept but lacks a focused style to my ears, and that's essentially what makes these kinda things pull me in, be it some really loose stuff like I Left My Wallet In El Segundo or more serious things like GKMC.

Hontatedori
Calm freefolksy tunes, reminded me of alameda 3 at their mildest. I'd probably love it in a fitting mood.

OFWGKTA for whypipo that think Tyler, the Creator is too spicy.

OFWGKTA for SWPLs that can only tolerate hip-hop once it has been white-washed, re-appropriated by white liberals and gay white-presenting blacks, as well as put through the political-correctness grinder (or should I say Grindr).

Saturation II doesn't provide much consistency thematically, nor does it offer much progression in its production and song structure. Most songs are disparate bars often held together (barely) by a hook against ear-grating instrumentals. These instrumentals have an annoying sonic palette that offers little variation, looping repeatedly and quickly becoming exhausted.

The production tries to direct focus towards the lyricism on this record which is technically good and will impress your puritanical old-heads and geeky rap autists. The content of the lyrics however are often naive and cringe-worthy.

The ideas, thoughts, memes and perspectives laid out on this record, particularly LGBT issues may be relatively new for hip-hop. However they are still the same stale, boring and tired ideas that have dominated the status quo of popular culture for much of the decade. These ideas find themselves constantly spouted by blogs and parroted by Reddit nu-males. I'm honestly surprised that SWPLs still have not become fatigued by these narratives that are pervasive in the media that they consume.

When I want to listen to gay hip-hop on I'm just going to stick to Young Thug tbqh senpai.

I hope that this is a joke, because the only thing that's getting fatigued is the unnecessary race card getting pulled on topics that have nothing to do with it.

Indeed, great album, and you're a great person! That being said the length did seem to drag a little too much then I suppose that's the standard affair with a large proportion of metal artists.
