Did ELP ever release a record that wasn't polluted with filler? Their self titled has Lucky Man, Trilogy has From the Beginning, Tarkus has Tarkus, and Brain Salad Surgery has Karn Evil, but other than those stand out tracks, the rest is boring as shit to me. Why are they so talked about in prog?

BSS is their only classic album where the other tracks didn't grow on me. Works I and II are the definition of filler though.
>>
>>74918798
>Why are they so talked about in prog?
because they did the suite sidelong thing very well but other things terribly. Most people also think of them as among the worst of the 'big' prog bands like Yes, KC, Genesis, Floyd and all that because of how incredibly pretentious their lyrics are, and how they put sidelong suites on every album.
>>
>>74919730
I find it kinda annoying that they're one of the bigger prog bands, when they lack the quality of some of the lesser known greats, like Gentle Giant for example, but retain their excess and complexity.
>>
>>74918798
I think Trilogy is a pretty strong album besides Abaddon's Bolero
But yeah I agree with you on the other albums
They're talked about because they made some really good shit. When people listen to Tarkus they don't listen to Side B.

>>

I miss the energy they had in their earlier albums.
Malina isn't blowing me away like Coal and The Congregation did, but it is growing on me.

Feels like they are moving away from sounding like prog-metal and djent to being more like progressive indie-pop. I am not sure I like that..
>>
>>74919730
Pretentious lyrics? The majority of their work is instrumental. And how exactly are few of their folk songs pretentious? Do you know who that term can be ascribed to in this moment? To manufactured pop stars whose committees decided it's time for them to go "dark".

Nevermind, just saw the US rankings. Still, GG were not that far behind from KC. Both used to chart around #50 to #150, which is pretty high/popular.
>>
>>74926947
dude just get over it
dont get me wrong I love Gentle Giant as much as the next guy, but statistically Gentle Giant just isn't nearly as popular as ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, or fucking any other prog band. This shouldn't be news to you, you probably had to do a bit of searching/listening to the genre for a while before you discovered them.

also what kind of radio stations are you listening to that played Gentle Giant, cause I hear Karn Evil 9 1st Impression Pt. 2 all the time but never ONE Gentle Giant song

Not really. I would always, always see them posted along with "ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, or fucking any other prog band"
I'm being dead serious here.
And judging from the chart rankings above, it makes sense. GG did chart relatively high.

>werent you the tripfag who called gentle giant pleb tier a few weeks ago?
Nope. I'm the one who calls Camel and Gryphon pleb-tier.

Here's some albums/songs
are they prog or not

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Frank Zappa & The Mothers - Freak Out!
Radiohead - Kid A
The Velvet Underground - & Nico
Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
King Crimson - Discipline
Can - Tago Mago
Naked City - s/t
Yes - 90125
Black Flag - The Process Of Weeding Out
Gorillaz - Do Ya Thing (Full Version)
Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Ruins - Hyderomastgroningem
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon
Comus - First Utterance
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Meshuggah - obZen
Voivod - Nothingface
Yowie - Cryptoology
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Swans - Soundtracks For The Blind
Slint - Spiderland
Monks - Black Monk Time
Index - Index [Black Album]
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music
>>
>>74928025
Of those, I'd say Zappa and King Crimson are prog rock and Meshugguh is prog metal.
>>
>>74928025
>Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
jazz fusion. some like to categorize the genre as being closely related to prog because of a lot of jazz influences in prog but i guess that depends on who you're asking.
>Frank Zappa & The Mothers - Freak Out!
proto-prog maybe?
>King Crimson - Discipline
i'd say yes
>Can - Tago Mago
krautrock is a offshoot of prog according to some, related in some ways according to others
>Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
again, maybe proto-prog
>Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
i've heard people argue that post-rock is a sub genre of prog in the same way math rock is. again depends on who you ask
>Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon
psychedelic prog. definitely counts imo
>Comus - First Utterance
prog folk. again, definitely counts
>Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
prog pop. not rock
>Swans - Soundtracks For The Blind
>Slint - Spiderland
same thing as GY!BE

the rest i either haven't heard or it could be argued either way. again this is all just my opinion and i'm sure as fuck no expert

>>74927497
no, but TKOL and AMSP are prog

>i'd say yes
It's New Wave.

>krautrock is a offshoot of prog
Absolutely wrong.

>related in some ways according to others
Yes, but calling kraut prog is problematic.

>psychedelic prog. definitely counts imo
Not prog

>prog pop. not rock
Not prog. And Beach Boys are rock anyways.

>i've heard people argue that post-rock is a sub genre of prog in the same way math rock is
Yes, but not the GYBE branch of post rock

>>74928396

More detailed answer now

>Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Jazz Fusion.

>Frank Zappa & The Mothers - Freak Out!
It has some Krautrock tracks, but Krautrock is not Prog Rock.

>Radiohead - Kid A
It's Experimental Rock, but there is no Prog Rock.

>The Velvet Underground - & Nico
Experimental Rock. Heroin is a Post Rock precursor, but Post Rock is not Krautrock. European Son is Krautrock.

>Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
I don't remember much from Modern Dance, but their earlier singles had Krautrock.

>King Crimson - Discipline
New Wave and Experimental Rock. Sheltering Sky was kind of Prog Rock at times, but that's it.

>Can - Tago Mago
Krautrock.

>Naked City - s/t
Some Brutal Prog tracks. Now, whether Brutal Prog counts as Prog Rock is arguable.

>Yes - 90125
More New Wave rooted, but some tracks probably had some Prog Rock (don't remember much from it though).

>Black Flag - The Process Of Weeding Out
Listened to it once, but don't remember anything from it.

>Gorillaz - Do Ya Thing (Full Version)
Krautrock.

>Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
A Day in the Life has some similarities with Prog Rock, but it's still not a Prog Rock song.

>Ruins - Hyderomastgroningem
Brutal Prog.

>Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
I have no idea about Godspeed, they don't seem to be rooted in any other single specific genre.

>Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon
Rock with experimental tendencies.

>Comus - First Utterance
A weird mutation of Contemporary Folk.

>Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Experimental Rock and Blues Rock.

>Meshuggah - obZen
Haven't listened to it.

>Voivod - Nothingface
Don't remember anything from it, but this one should be an interesting case.

>Yowie - Cryptoology
Brutal Prog

>Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Pop Rock.

>Swans - Soundtracks For The Blind
Same as GYBE

>Monks - Black Monk Time
Garage Rock, with some Noise Rock and Experimental Rock bits.

cont.
>>
>>74928025
>>74928830
>Index - Index [Black Album]
Haven't listened to it.

>Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Don't remember anything from it.

>Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music
Not Rock. Probably Minimalism or Progressive Electronic (in the vein of Terry Riley's Rainbow) turning to Noise. Experimental.

I just recently discovered him dispite have been listening to prog for several years. Like most prog bands he's got a lot of shitty stuff, but TB's and Ommadawn are god tier imo. Then how would any of you classify PF discog? WYWH is undeniably prog, and Meddle and Obscured by Clouds is psych-prog so wouldn't it make sense to say that DSotM is prog since it sounds so similar to what was before and after it? If you listen to the live stuff then it sounds just like classic PF prog. Discount DSotM for not being prog enough can just lead to other albums like KC's Islands or Caravan's Waterloo Lily for being too jazzy.

Dark Side doesn't really sound like the albums you mentioned (at least not the first two).
