I have a general inquiry on getting a specific tone if anyone who stumbles in this thread can help me. Got a couple of decisions I'm trying to make and would appreciate the feedback.

I have a Squier Classic Vibe Stratocaster 60's reissue (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier/Classic-Vibe-Stratocaster-60s-Electric-Guitar-Burgundy-Mist-with-Matching-Headstock-1408368025558.gc)
As stated in the specs, it comes with Custom vintage style Stratocaster pickups (AlNiCo V).

Pickups:
The tone I'm striving for very Billy Corgan-Siamese Dream era. Now, I've had my eye on his signature DiMarzio Bc-1/Chopper/Bc-2 (http://www.dimarzio.com/node/7801) pickups but then I discovered he uses Lace Pickups on a couple of his strats as well. I wanted to know what /mu/ would recommend between the two or if there is something else that would be preferred better.

Fuzz:
I currently have a Way Huge Swollen Pickle but I feel like it's just not delivering the tone needed to get that solid grinding sound.
I've looked into Big Muffs, either a Germanium Muff, Big Muff with Tone Wicker, a Big Muff Deluxe, or a Death By Audio Fuzz War. But one of my friends recommended to me a Fuzzrocious Grey Stache which I'm pretty impressed with it's versatility.

Input/Patch cables
recently came up on a 12X17 Pedaltrain with a flight case and preinstalled Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 on craigslist for $140 (A fuckin steal if you ask me). It's a tad smaller than I'd like but I feel like with the right input/patch cables, I could really utilize my space accordingly. I have thought about Lava Cables (Tightrope/Solderless) but I heard those aren't that durable. Any brands you would recommend?

I'm just really indecisive when it comes to buying things because I'm always ballin' on a budget, so I want to make sure what I buy is always what I'm looking for.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I created a General Guitar Parts and Pedal Thread over here >>74868609 but I thought I'd give a whirl here.

Are the memes about bass true? Is it really that easy to become a passable/good bass player in any genre without putting in as much effort as any other instrument?
>>
>>74869306

I know for a fact billy uses a big muff based on research I did one time using old forum posts and videos taken from "behind the scenes" movies about SP.

In fact it's a standard big muff pi with volume/tone at 1 o clock and sustain at 8 o clock position. That I know for sure. The rest of his pedalset is a mystery and I've heard contradictory reports, but the big muff I'm sure of. There's probably about 10 pedals at work if I had to guess. I'm also 99% sure he uses a marshall JCM900 head.

I use Lava Tightrope cables for my pedal board (pic related) and they seem to be holding up fairly well, you just have to be sure you build them correctly, not as simple to make as George L's or Planet Waves cable kits. Also I would highly recommend the Grey Stache for Fuzz, I'm from Philly and I've met Ryan from Fuzzrocious in person, great guy and makes awesome pedals. He hooked me up with one of his Feed Me pedals for $130, I bought it direct from him since I was local. Of course if you want that real Billy Corgan fuzz tone save your pennies and grab a real vintage OP-AMP Big Muff, second best option would be the Eye See Pi by Wren & Cuff.

I've got $1000 to blow on recording equipment. What are some good mics for vocals? What are some good mics for acoustic guitar? What are some good audio interfaces? Still doing research so I want some of /gg/'s suggestions.
>>
>>74869579
You get get one really good mic that can do vocals and acoustics super good, just track separately. I'd recommend from the used market an UA Apollo Twin Solo (about $500 used), and an AKG C414 (about $500 used as well).

Also, that Guitar Tone Company Bloody Finger Distortion Pedal
(https://reverb.com/item/3028993-guitar-tone-company-bloody-finger-distortion-pedal) really gives him an adge with his leads and high gains that a regular Big Muff can't deliver with such poor mids.

>>74869438
Fuck, that is a solid rig you got there. Thanks for the feedback on cables and the fuzz! I really want to grab a diy Lava Cable titerope/solderless pack and do it myself but I'm not exactly sure which one to buy. I heard the titerope does the trick and they're easier to put together.

Was playing on my old kustom bass amp and it just went silent, doesnt power on, no light on the indicator light.

Whats likely the issue here? Better to try a quick fix, or just buy a new amp?
>>
>>74869730
Well I currently use a Way Huge Swollen Pickle combined with a Moog Minifooger Ring Modulator and The Electro-Harmonix Nano LPB-1 Power Booster high gains.
It's just not doing me justice. It's more of a Dinosaur Jr. sound and just too much.

To answer your question, yeah for the most part. Scooped mids and a tight bottom. I love a warm, soft, fuzz tone that can really sound full and grind than a crunchy, high gain sound.
>>
>>74869787

There are actually very few guitars I'll even bother with, because any guitar needs a lightly oiled unfinished neck, and stainless vintage-spec frets. I have an 80s US telecaster that I had modified in such a way, but the only other guitars I can think of that come with that sort of standard are some ugly-ass meme machines.

>Amps.
Little torn on this one. I've owned a 5150, Twin Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, TSL, DSL, Hotrod Deluxe, etc. But I'm going to have to go with my current hotness:
>Twin Reverb Custom 15.
Runner up:
>Matchless Phoenix.

>Pedals.
I owned one of the earlier Deluxe Memory Mans with the built-in cable... until it was stolen. Still kills me, but I'm not sure I'd throw it on my board if I got it back tomorrow. I can build a board with the following 3 pedals, and basically any drive, looper, and delay:
>EHX Ring Thing.
>EHX Synth 9.
>Keeley 2-Knob Comp.

Need help recognizing a guitar.
Its an acoustic guitar and by form I can tell it was a steel string guitar but the previous owner put nylon strings in it. Its a Levin and from what i read on wikipedia, they manufactured guitar from 1900 to 1978.
And on the guitar, theres no serial number. But it does says it was made in Gothenburg on the sticker inside the soundhole.
It also lacks a truss rod so I was a bit hesitant about buying it.

No thanks. Im not a complete moron. I can buy new fuses 5 for $5. Which, after 12 years of heavy use, is not uncommon for them to wear out. I dont see any other glaring issues. If it doesnt power up after a new fuse, guess I will have to get the probes and voltmeter and poke around the transformer.

People romanticize this stuff way too much. "The old, quirky and moody luthier, only he knows how to properly treat my instrument, he knows all the tricks".
Literally the best luthier I've been to was a young guy with proper training, he had his shop set up in a shopping center next to a big guitar store. He had a proper ticketing system set up, a website, gave me an estimate on how much the work would cost (the price ended up being lower than the estimate), he did a great job and gave me a proper receipt as well.

The other "old luthiers" I went to literally all fucked up something to some degree, were a pain to deal with or did shady stuff like making everything cheaper if you don't need a receipt.

so the thought process of modes is

if im in the key of C and i want the mixolydian mode, i'll find the 5th of the key, in this case G, and playing the G major scale i'll be playing the C mixolydian

does this work for all of them?
2nd note for dorian, 3rd note for phrygian etc.

for that example take the C major scale and visualise the G major scale overlapping it. See it's mostly the same with a few extra notes ?

These notes are your modal "flavours". You're essentially just adding some extra notes.

Practice this new scale over a backing track as it's much easier to "feel" the difference as opposed to just going up and down the scale on its own.

>if im in the key of C and i want the mixolydian mode, i'll find the 5th of the key, in this case G, and playing the G major scale i'll be playing the C mixolydian
No.

If you play the C Major PITCH COLLECTION (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) and play it with the emphasis on the G note and treating G as the root note of the harmony, THEN you are playing G Mixolydian.

If you want the Siamese Dream era, then go for the Lace set, since it's what he was using at the time. IIRC, he used the standard red, silver, blue set.

As far as the fuzz goes, the Swollen Pickle should get you there, it's one of the best pedals on the market for that huge, grindy sounding fuzz. But you have to be aware that it was designed be insanely tweakable (seriously, you can get a huge variety of sounds because of all the controls), so if you're not happy with how it sounds now, it's worth messing with the controls more. In fact, because Corgan used a weird variant of the Big Muff that doesn't get copied as much (more on that later), the controls on the Swollen Pickle probably make it the easiest "normal" Big Muff copy for getting the sound you want. The most relevant ones will probably be the internal diode-selecting trimpot and the external one that controls compression.

If you're still not happy, Billy's sound on that album came from an IC/Op-amp Big Muff, so get a copy of one of those instead of the ones you've listed. And the solos were boosted with an MXR Distortion II, if you care about that.

Bullshit. Thats just contrarian jackoff meme.

Derek's slide playing is profoundly new, innovative and different than anyone else ever- even Duane. He is a Historian and a history maker all at the same time. His slide playing is only half his chops. His rhythm playing is extraordinary. His ability to improvise and lead a band impressive. His finger picking is not a "generic" approach to the blues, soul and rock genre that he plays. He sounds nothing even remotely like Bonmasa in style, tone, or phrasing.

You my not like the type of music he plays but to call his playing "generic" is pretty fucking stupid

I'm trying to learn Wes Montgomery's "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" and have a couple of questions:

1. I am a supposed to play these chords with my thumb and all four fingers or do I use a pick and mute the A string with my ring finger? Or is there a better way to do it?

2. A lot of these chords look like movable chord shapes that I should know, and learning the shapes would be more beneficial than memorizing the tab. Can I set up Guitar Pro to give me chord boxes?

this is what Guthrie Govan said about Derek Trucks:

Q: What pops into your head if I ask you what the top two or three most inspiring live guitar performances are that you've ever witnessed?

A: Without even thinking, I would say the most recent one was Derek Trucks. Before hearing Derek, I didn't know a guitar could sound so vocal. With him, the guitar becomes this transparent thing, and through it we hear this great gospel singer that Derek hears in his head. Presumably, Derek can't sing like that, but he's made it so his guitar can.

Expensive. They started to manufacture the guitars in Korea (or some other sweatshop) and this alone don't justify the expensive price. Strandbergs are really popular among people who mainly play tapping style chords and other gimmicks. If I had disposable money I would buy one but with 6 strings as I feel that anything over 6 is bit of a gimmick unless you are super talented player who really needs those extra strings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rzEusAuL80 This video is annoying but I like the guitar this bitch has.

surely you know how autistic people are on this forum. it's not out of the realm of possibility to take your post seriously, anon. my mistake, i didn't know it was a joke.

>surely you know how autistic people are on this forum

i mean yeah that's why i was parodying them. but i mean i feel like most of the "autistic" posts these days are just satire anyway

there was a grain of truth in it though, i was a bit annoyed/insecure when i realized she was home while we were all practicing. just means i need to man up so i can eventually perform

you didnt. you mentioned the gadgets you use. If you dont understand the difference then you are an even bigger pleb than previously revealed.

Good luck with that.

I know some exercise... It's called practicing... You know... Who would have guessed that in order to improve in guitar you need to just...play it...on...regular...basis...

Anyone got barre chord tips? I know I just need to practice/strengthen my finger, but is there anything else that can help? Some specific way to position the finger or something? Just curious.
>>
>>74887320
Just play lead guitar and you'll never need it m8

Now you need to buy new scarf and some interesting perfume. I always wear red silk scarf on my neck when I play guitar as it inspires me. Red is the color of powerful energy. As for perfume itself, I would recommend Yves Saint Laurent Opium. It was banned upon it's launch because of the controversial name. It was such a drastic move. Scarf, perfume and Fender Stratocaster. You can't really go wrong.

It's not a meme. If you want to be an artist you need to dress like one. Strong perfume smell inspires me and scarf gives me energy.

Use the side of your finger. At first it will seem impossible to get the pressure and stuff but it will literally happen on its own eventually. You'll wake up one day doing barre chords after many times of frustratingly trying to get them to work/buzz.
t. complete shit beginner at guitar but can do barre chords
