The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Trim's album was alright and really just that. I've never fashioned myself to be a Grime(s) man so this was understandably average to me. I liked a fair chunk of the beats, especially the weird almost Paper Mario sounding ones, but there's something about vocals in most Grime albums that i can't get over. Also some of the lyrics were either weird or straight up funny which i think was actually a positive overall

so yeah, 6.5

Finally some free time to keep this thing going

>Modest Mouse - Sad Sappy Sucker Chokin on a Mouthful of Lost Thoughts
Short album filled with lots of tracks and a lot are filler but still doesn't matter since it goes by pretty fast although as an EP it would be 10 times better. Charming in its own peculiar way but pretty average overall.

Man I don't know, I didn't like the vocals at all, some riffs are neat but also there's like nothing that I will be remembering or makes me go back to it.

>Florian Hecker, Mark Leckey - Hecker Lecky Sound Voice Chimera
>Electroacoustic Glitch
Probably the strangest album on this chart. Broken up into 3 tracks of almost equal length, experimental sound bites are spread out like separate rooms. Primitive analogs endlessly run in circles or through halls, a corpse lies face-first on an electric organ, bird chirps become a quasar, and voices sound like they come from cheap automatons; all of these "experiments" focus on repetition.

Most of the voices you hear are from Leckey's "GreenScreenRefrigeratorAction". I thought the tentativeness fit the music at first, but they get old by the middle of the second track. I did like how they pitched the voices with the patterns heard in the first track, but it wasn't enough to justify the whole album.

6/10

>Lifted - 1
>Ambient Dub, bit o' jazz, "leftfield"
Co La, Motion Graphics, and Gigi Masin are some of the more notable collaborators on this project, their signature sounds obvious on many tracks. Lift is definitely the work of Motion Graphics, with its MIDI piano and New Age synths; meanwhile, bongo samples and scratchy effects on Total Care Zero remind me of Co La. It's an album that flows really easily, maybe better than something like Mono No Aware.

7/10

>Objekt - Flatland
>IDM
"Old-school IDM worship" for sure. But it's also Really Good, like Autechre and Aphex but fresh. Not much else to say about it that couldn't be said about some of those guys, other than there's less sound variety and simpler structures than something like LP6 or any of RDJ's acid techno releases. Better than most

>Valerio Tricoli - Clonic Earth
>Musique Concrete, Electroacoustic
2 years after Miseri Lares, Tricoli is still very good at creating forboding, stormy landscapes with his tech. This release seems to focus on being less overwhelming, and much more ambient. Tricoli's vocal manipulations are much more effective, and pop songs and . With the amount of different sounds he adds to his work, his focus on a smaller scale gives this album much-needed weight.

7/10

>Helm - Olympic Mess
>Drone, Ambient
One of the most well-known faces of PAN, next to Lee Gamble, Yves Tumor, and M.E.S.H.. While it's not even the most experimental of albums to come from PAN, its loops and notably ambient synths are what works best for it. Things like the sweet string-like ending of Outerzone 2015 balances out the heavier tracks. Kinda reminds me of Replica, overall a very decent ambient album, more colorful than you'd expect.

Stupid fuckin ASMR track though, Strawberry Chapstick isn't nearly as bad as Holly Herndon's, but who actually likes that shit

FINAL THREE:
============

trip up:
>Women - Eyesore
Patrick Flegel (and his brother's?) voice here reminded me that, yes, Women is not a bad band, even if their debut has waned on me. Given that this was from Public Strain, they have a poppier sound ala Beach Boys. The two guitars trade off as Flegel's voice hits a peak: "We were sneaking in to the aquarium / gold Leaf in your feet, you left a trail..."

Recc Public Strain for a tournament sometime later.

rodriguez:
>DJ Paypal - Flowers
I was irritated by the Amen break (as I usually am), but it evolves out of that quick into the bubbliness that I enjoy from PC Music. What initially sounds like UK jungle becomes a boppy, head-nodding romp, as the Amen break is turned into a mini kick drum and claps. Not outstanding, but very catchy.

======
CUT:
======

Letov:
>Hartyga project feat. Andrey Bardin - Konguray
I was hoping I'd like this more, but the church organ really takes me out of it. Maybe it's already because the way this song is almost overly cinematic, no thanks to the ritualistic drum. Compared to The Bulgarian Voices where there was was only three parts that traded off, but voices were powerful on first and foremost.

Still willing to hear the album, but I think it's the middle ground when it comes to foreign music that I'm not completely content with.

FIshmans - 宇宙 日本 世田谷 (Uchu Nippon Setagaya)
>dream pop, trip hop

I liked this a lot more than Long Season! I feel like most of my criticisms of LS are nonexistent on this album, as the song-oriented structure (as opposed to one long composition) allows for the band to explore more ideas, and the songs become a lot more immediate and varied as a result. However, it doesn’t lose the dreamy repetitive style that made the better parts of Long Season so enjoyable; the longer tracks on here like Weather Report (which seems to have SAW 87-92 vibes) and Walking In The Rhythm have a lot of space to let the jams breathe, and the violin playing on the latter track is a real treat.

That's the last time I use Notepad to save my reviews, jesus christ.

>Rocketship - A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness
Cute, comfy, whatever. The pervasive organ is obviously the most striking element on this album; it's way too loud on most of the tracks and probably overused, but I don't mind. There's enough slow tracks on here that I definitely feel like listening to this again.
3.5

>Sadistik - The Balancing Act
The only reason why I listened to this album in the first place was because Emancipator did a lot of the production, and I liked his style of downtempo at the time. I can't say the same for Sadistik's rapping though; for a hip-hop album that's trying to be personal and emotional, it doesn't feel like much of either. The lyricism and vocal delivery are very dramatic, almost to the point of cheesiness, and only one song (November) manages to come off as sincere. At least the production is pretty alright.
2.5+

>Mr. Gnome - Heave Yer Skeleton
This is really bland. It reminds me of that Ume album I had on a previous chart, since it's just indie rock with female vocals, and little else to make it stand out.
2.5

>Dunian - Dunian
Some Latvian dude released this 11 minute long EP of adequately chill wonky stuff and then pretty much disappeared. Well, Discogs claims that he's now the dude behind Domenique Dumont, but I can't find a source for that.
3.0-

>Slaraffenland - Private Cinema
Danish post-rock with vocals and the occasional jazz freakout(?), decent stuff. The sole fact that the non-guitar instrumentation is mostly brass and woodwind as opposed to strings and piano is more than enough to keep me ineterested.
3.5-

>Korallreven - An Album By Korallreven
Adding baelaric beat elements to already vapid "chillwave" (read: generic synth heavy indie pop with reverb) isn't a great idea. It's the musical equivalent of those indoor ski resorts in Dubai: a soullessly manufactured waste of effort, all just to appear tacky and forced.

David Borden - The Continuing Story of Counterpoint, Parts 1-4+8
>minimalism, electronic baroque

Some undeniably interesting sounds on here. If I had to describe it, I’d probably make myself look like an absolute pleb when it comes to Classical Music and say its a lot like if you took Steve Reich and Bach and ran it through a midi controller. Textures and synth sounds change from part to part (introducing some pretty cool vocals in parts 3 & 4 that remind me of the deconstructive choir experiments Tim Hecker was working with on his latest album), but for the most part the album sticks to its eternal braid of interlocking, nonstop counterpoint harmony. Part 8 introduced what sounds like a guitar into the mix, adding some much needed viscerality to the track and making it probably my favourite track on here.

Sadly, the album mostly falls into the same problems that keeps me from fully enjoying a lot of baroque era counterpoint-focused classical music (or a lot of math rock, for that matter): it’s in*sane*ly complex and impressive from a theory perspective, but without deep knowledge of whats really going on in these compositions, it sometimes just goes over my head without making much of an emotional impact on me.

Human Sadness is by far the best track on the album. The best things about it are the melancholic bass riff and how the vocals effortlessly move about it's scale on the hook.

It does suffer from the same vice of rest of the album, which is that of an ugly, cluttered, and unfocused production/instrumentation.

Paul Simon - Paul Simon (1972)
>singer/songwriter, folk rock

About ten times better than Graceland, that's for sure, but it's lacking the intimate, delicate nature of Simon & Garfunkel's works that makes them so special. Simon's a lovely singer on his own right, and his songwriting is always great, yet without Garfunkel some of his songs seem a bit hollow, especially the blues and reggae songs. He doesn't do any sort of great disservice to these genres, his takes are just naturally very flaccid and undercooked. Simon's brand of folk rock here is great, though. "Run That Body Down" and "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" are obvious classics and this whole thing just has a really nice feel and sound to it, laid back and chill but not lethargic. Cool record. Not great, but pretty cool.

Bill Wells and Maher Shalal Hash Baz - GOK (2009)
>experimental big band

A colorful, kaleidoscopic take on big band. There's a really amateurish charm to this that I enjoy a lot, it's completely distinct from any other in this style of heard and it's lovely. This charm can lead to some less-than-stellar moments, however, especially when it gets more child-like. It's pretty loose, which is occasionally a fault, more often something positive, as it adds to the singularity of this whole album. In any other tourney ricebeansandegg would've sinched it, but Letov really pulled the trump card here.

Panasonic - Vakio (1995)
>glitch, minimal techno

Slightly too minimal and spare for me to get into. Panasonic's failings come with their general lack of a diverse sonic pallette. They make great headphone music, their various sounds coming off more like headphone glitches than actual musical sounds (in the best way possible), and do little more than pull off some cool sound design. The techno-influenced tracks generally bang, the glitch is a lot more obtuse and unenjoyable.

Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra - Out to Lunch (2005)
>experimental big band

A very cool interpretation of one of the best jazz albums ever. Yoshihide stays true to a lot of the original album's motifs, and completely disregards every other aspect of it. He brings in onkyo, Naked City-esque punk, and mostly straight-jazz, and pulls them all off very well. The onkyo that takes over the closing track is entirely unnecessary and pretty weak, but everything else is great.

Paul McCartney & Wings - Band on the Run (1973)
>pop rock

Much weaker than RAM; a half-baked pop album that dabbles poorly in prog. The title track is killer, as is the driving "Jet", the rest lacks the melodic capabiliy so prominent in most of McCartney's work, often devolving into unstructured, awkward prog.

London Sinfonietta / David Zinman / Dawn Upshaw - Symphony No. 3 (1992)
>symphony, modern classical

Overblown movie soundtrack mush. The first movement has it's moments of beauty, but even that is squandered by a complete lack of a grasp on dynamics and decent structure. Far too soft segments clash into loud moments with no hint of subtlety or warning, and nothing interesting is posed with this dichotomy. Clean, synthetic production saps the life and emotion out of the performances save for Upshaw's, the strings especially. Like I said, the first movement is fairly beautiful, the rest entirely underwhelming.

Still need a tiebreaker song from 2017 from NoveltyCondom and a rec for the final round from Dogwander.

In other news, Coin Coin Chapter One is pretty great, should've listened to it earlier but the spoken word tag on rym threw me off a bit. Now I realize the spoken word parts are probably the best thing about the album.

Pete Heller - Big Love
An uplifting house single, cool loop and a french house-like laid back atmosphere, doesn't do much for me but hey, made me feel just a little better.

Gerard Grisey - Les Espaces Acoustiques (Garth Knox)
My first taste of spectral music, more engaging than I expected. I particularily liked the first movement with just solo viola, which consists of short wide-range passages that slowly get more and more twisted and unusual. More instruments join in the later movements, gradually growing into a large orchestra. After the 3rd movement stuff's mostly happening in lower registers (especially in Transitories) or gets too chaotic and I was losing track of it and maybe getting a bit impatient, but the first 3 were simpler to wrap my head and more dynamic. The epilogue was also noteworthy with deranged brass floating around.

Gastr Del Sol - Camofleur
>post rock, american primitivism

What a cozy album. I learned after I was done listening that Jim O’Rourke himself has performance / recording engineer credit on here, which totally makes sense with the mix of immaculately produced chamber-rock compositions with warm droney electronics and excellent acoustic guitar segments. No tracks really stuck out to me as particularly mindblowing (except maybe the dual acoustic guitar spiral on “Black Horse”) but this is a consistently well performed and enjoyable experimental rock album.

Bell Witch - Longing
>funeral doom metal

Unrelentingly slow, mournful, and depressive in everything from the guitar tone to the vocals. There’s not really much I can think of to say about this, as it maintains a very consistent sludgy, slow, doom metal sound in almost every song. It’s a decent texture and mood, and from my past experience with the genre I usually need to be in a specific mood (i.e. stoned) to fully appreciate the deep vibrations and subdued tones of a funeral doom album. In my current mood though, most of the songs on here dragged on a little long to stay interesting, and each track features very little in terms of diversity so it can seem to blend together into one 20bpm jam. Also, maybe just a personal gripe, but I’ve never been a consistently huge fan of clean vocals in my otherwise heavy as hell metal albums, so some of the more emotional parts of this album missed me.

The dialogue sample on “Beneath The Mask” was cool though!

Just like Innocence, only one track here stood out to me (the title track). Mockasin's voice was also grating at times imo.

I know! I was so annoyed with the single when it came out, but I wound up loving it. I think Sondre just has a knack with melody that allows him to do whatever he wants and I think it's great. Siamese Twin is excellent, but my faves are Baby Come to Me, I Know Something That's Gonna Break Your Heart, and Bleeding Out into the Blue (which people here seem to hate because of that harsh left turn with the EDM style windup)

Brand New - Science Fiction (2017)
>indie rock, emo, alternative rock

Pretty solidly the best work I've heard from Brand New so far, albeit not without some pretty major faults. The harder-edged soud here is flat-out awful, especially on the bluesier tracks towards the end of the album. They try a style that I don't even like to begin with, and they do it in such a half-baked, awkward manner, totally breaking the flow of the album. "Out of Mana" is the only hard track that really works, because it plays in much more of a noise rock/hardcore field. The rest of the album is very ethereal and floaty, something never explored by Brand New before, at least to such an extent. Luckily, they do this new style remarkably well. The post-rock inspiritation brings some much-needed beauty into the sound, evoking midwest emo more than the pop punky emo of Brand New's yore, and some slight folk and alt-country influences give the album a sonic pallette unique to the band and the genre as a whole. Not quite the "best rock album of the decade", as some reviews had me believe, still a cool, unique album that's turning my thoughts around on this band.

Jackmaster - Fabriclive 57 (2011)
>house, techno

Fabric mixes often represent a more alternative, obtuse side of dance music. Jackmaster completely eschews that here, delivering an hour of some of the most gleefully fun, simple house bangers around. The lyrics are all about sex and booties, the beats are four to the floor pretty much across the board. It's so decidedly old-school in its sound yet it sounds so fresh. It's repetitive sure, and it loses steam towards the end (I love "Idioteque" to death, but it is a really poor closer), but so much of this is so thrilling I can't help but unquestionably love it.

Julia Wolfe - Steel Hammer (2014)
>choral, post-minimalism

Very intriguing, out-there minimalist work. The way the story of John Henry is told is enthralling, it's done in an incredibly abstract manner through repetition of words and motifs, and the basic story is still front and center despite this unique approach. The hypnotic choral vocals can get old fast, especially in the fairly interminable "Destiny", but Wolfe and Trio Mediaeval still give it their all. Bang on a Can does great work here too, the hammer strikes are legitimately shocking. Really cool, really singular.

Eric Taxxon - Winter Beats
>downtempo, electronic

This was a bit of a mixed bag. The album is formatted as a single 37 minute composition, and while there were some recurring elements throughout the piece, the ideas and melodies are usually easily distinguishable due to fadeouts parsed between them. Some of these ideas are really pleasant, such as the fast paced break-core esque part with acoustic drums at around 12:30, the final outro, or the vocal sample-based part in the 17:00 range. However, for every good part on this album I feel like there’s a jarring transition between two movements, or an set of synthesizers that don’t mesh very well together, or an unnessecary vocal refrain. Some sections seem to just have a larger amount of inspiration behind them, while others are largely forgettable.

ROD VERSUS TRIP

good friend rodriguez:
>World Cup - Jump Scene
Kinda like if Giant Claw had decided to do something funky after Deep Thoughts, an album I really enjoyed. Extra playful and a touch of clumsiness for its charm, and there's a scratching sound in the percussion around 1:27 that I really liked. Overall, not as much impact I would have liked, especially when you could have picked a longer track from this album (or label).

trip up:
>Red House Painters - Katy Song
Way more sadboi than previous reccs, with a less interesting singer and straightforward lyrics than Woman, but damn it's pretty heavy. Never found myself hating the long length, as I usually would for this kind of music.

===========

In the end, I couldn't really decide. Rod's pick was more creative, trip's was safer but had emotional weight. It was like comparing a fruity shot to a mug of beer.

So I guess both of you get drones, 25 albums each. Drop reccs or I'll pick from your top rated, in order.

>XXXTentacion - 17
Uuuuh guys this is not as bad as people make it out to be. I didn't pay attention much attention to the lyrics but the lofi homemade sound is bery cute. Some songs have lame and lazy songwriting decisions but it's a cool record.
6

>Oren Ambarchi - Grapes From the Estate
Very pleasing summertime ambient. The record use some nice click sounds that sound like how your ears unblock after a flight, and all the focus leads to a centerpiece track, Remedios the Beauty (which also suggests Hundred Years of Solitude vibes). That track is p amazing yeah.
7

>Harold Budd, Elizabeth Fraser, Robin Guthrie & Simon Raymonde - The Moon and the Melodies
Another ambient record, this one is somewhat more lively thanks to Cocteau Twins' singer's presence which spices things up a bit. The tracks without her are not as good but it's a nice listen overall.
7

>Tame Impala - Innerspeaker
I listened to it without paying much attention the first time and I was ready to write this off as stupid psychedelic 60's nostalgia, but after some spins it's actually one of the most fun and well crafted records I've heard in a while. The amazing production really brings it all one level higher.

Innerspeaker has been pretty underrated since day one for one reason or anything

Audience expectations were too high following the EP, then they all got attached to how catchy and hook-oriented Lonerism was, so now, the average listener approaching the band for the first time never really gives Innerspeaker the time of day

I've met a bunch of Tame fans who just never listened to it, and it's a bummer

I'm slacking on the tourney. Generally a little bummed these days. The job market sucks when you move away from the big city. Thus little social life right now besides hanging recently with this girl I was only lukewarm on but was sure she was smitten only to ghost me (music for such a dumb feeling?) Working on some cool music I can hopefully share soon though. Blog over.

>Destroyer - Your Blues (2004)

It's kind of funny to listen to Dan Bejar do the theatrical thing in a more amateur studio production. I associate those later albums like Kaputt with carefully crafted layers and studio mastery. In fact, I know it's the case that he poured over takes and takes of horns alone to cherry pick satisfying clips for the title track. I can't help but feel he either didn't care so much here or intentionally included some terrible, unpalatable synth patches to get a point across ("Don't Become the Thing You Hated"). As always, I tend to only be interested in the moments in which he pulls off the feat of sounding honest and theatrical at the same time, which happens all over on Kaputt, but appears here as a binary. I don't necessarily relate to the drama that inexplicably permeates from the get-go on "Notorious Lightning". I understand it's a schtick, but I don't always get it, and I look more forward to the honest moments, which are almost all acoustic or give themselves some room to work out a melody as in the title track.

>Mary Lattimore - Collected Pieces (2017)

For those potentially interested in this, don't be thrown off by the misleading "electroacoustic" tag. This isn't Stockhausen or anything and most of it is quite un-modified. Mary Lattimore plays solo harp and creates some ambient effects with some occasional loops and overdubbing and tape distortion. There may be a piano playing bass notes at some points, but it could also be modified harp. This reminds me of Tim Hecker in an abstract way at points--the way she layers and loops some admittedly simple melodies to build it up to something that could engulf you. That's about where the comparison ends though, as this is all on the prettier, simpler, more relaxed side. One of my favorites of the year so far.
7/10

>Jons - At Work on Several Things (2016)

The sound of this album is somewhere between Mac Demarco and Tame Impala, which I hope doesn't discourage anyone. Takes some clear neo-psychedelia influence in its odd progressions and combines it with some indie, maybe krautrock at times on nine-minute highlight, "Everything Happens to You", which features a near motorik beat and a hazy saxophone a la Traffic's "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys".

I have to admit I am a bit surprised at how legitimate this totally obscure album sounds. Tame Impala got heaps of praise for colorful, forward-looking-retrograde production on Lonerism, and this is in a similar category. I certainly dig the amount of layering in the production here more than in Mac Demarco's work. The main criticism I have is that while the instrumentals are competently and subtly composed, the vocal melodies are almost always meandering and entirely without hooks to match the bright music.
6.5/10

>The Silk String Quartet - Contemporary and Traditional Chinese Music (2007)

Pleasant but I'm not knowledgable enough to say much more about nuances.

it's not that it's "pleb-tier" it's that it's all /mu/ approved
stop trying to fit in here, it's not worth it in the slightest, this board/website is cancer. leave while you still can.

This album is the very definition of all-killer-no-filler. Shit is a thrill a minute and I've liked it more every time I've heard it, though I've only done so about 20 times. High rec.

>>74875895
not saying you can't listen to post-punk any more it's just that you don't get to be taken seriously anymore on the subject

>>74875917
What kinda stuff you looking for? What have you liked of what you've heard? Sounds like you just need to hear more in general but don't feel the need to be constrained by /mu/core because a lot of it isn't good and a lot of it you just won't like.

pic is a good album if you're not just into music with English lyrics

Thanks, it's a decent enough track to get you the final round! Didn't really like lamb's song, the video was the best part about it desu.

>>
>Ayreon - Flight of the Migrator
Cool album. First half is kinda slow and chill, second is all synths and metal.

>The Wildhearts - PHUQ
Comfy 90's pop rock that turns out a few thrash tracks towards the end.
