The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

As an aside, I saw Good Time last night and it was a riveting experience. Loved watching OPN's soundtrack come to life and completely set the pace and tone of a film. It isn't often that a film score plays such a vital role, and I am glad it won an award.

Why are all trap/modern rap albums so inconsistent though? I really don't think I've heard any conventional popular rap albums 2011+ that's all killer, even from huge fans of the genre. 90% of them have maybe one or two great songs and not much else.
I know people make the argument about most modern rappers are single-focused and abandon relying on albums + judging an artist by "albums" is rockist or something, but if that were the case then why even continue to release albums?
What I'm trying to say is the ratio of good to bad songs on Luv is Rage 2 is about one to one.
>>74766752
kind of afraid to. Might throw out all my music and just listen to that instead from now on.

>>74766858
Black Ken is really good, tracks 10-16 is a perfect stretch of songs
>>74766994
Why tf do rappers keep releasing 100-minute albums though jesus christ. Can't you just release a 30 minute great albums instead of super bloated ones? I know it's almost a gimmick for Lil B at least but it seems like everyone nowadays feels the need to release /everything/ they've recorded in a certain period.
I know it's dumb to judge all music on a good-to-bad ratio then give it a numerical score (even though I've done it 4000+ times) but do these guys not have any filter?
>>74766148

>>74767134
it became a thing because CDs started being a thing when hiphop rose to fame and it became the norm to just fill up all those ~75 minutes on the CD with music, even now that CDs are on the decline a lot of rappers still like to release long projects, guess it's in the culture. anyway, i think there's no shame in listening to a mixtape in multiple sittings, i listened to black ken in one go and didn't grow bored with it but you can split it up in 2 or 3 listens, just listen till you feel like stopping and pick it back up later. keep in mind, lil b probably doesn't make his mixtapes with the idea that it has to be listened to in one sitting, it's not like a rock album or anything in that sense.

Gareth Flowers - A Beginner's Guide to Lucid Dreaming
>drone, ambient, free improvisation
A very very enveloping ambient album. While one can easily tell the acoustic instruments were heavily electronically altered, this album still retains a very organic feel. Even with a 77-minute runtime, I never felt that this album got boring.

King Geedorah - Take Me to Your Leader

Film review. Spicy one.
>Knight of Cups (2015)
Against all odds, I do like this one. Amazing amount of criticism it's received for what I have to suspect is a backlash against uncovonventional storytelling, because it's seen the same criticism Tree of Life got, and the same criticism The Master got, etc. Film is like music in that it finds itself in this conundrum in which the general audience wants something bold but ultimately conservative. David Stubbs talks about this phenomenon in his book, Fear of Music: Why People Get Rothko But Don't Get Stockhausen.
Terrence Malick's style has shifted slightly over the years. The existential crisis and ennui of Days of Heaven and Badlands has just become fully-fledged and all-encompassing in his newer films, starting with Tree of Life. And for what it's worth, this is cut from the same cloth as Tree of Life--seemingly only a different perspective. His style here is intimate slice-of-life to the extreme...surreal, even. Filling the film are mostly dialogueless scenes of somewhat mundane events, like him and his brother wrestling or talking to studio executives, often overlaid with simple existential thoughts and questions covering a variety of viewpoints. Despite how nebulous or hamfisted that may sound, Malick (with the help of skilled actors) is a master of communicating the implied events of this film with only the use of carefully selected shots.

>>74771933
That book sounds interesting. I would think that music and film are judged more harshly for stepping out of bounds purely because they have are relatively recent and very commercial while paintings and similar mediums have a long and rich history with the avant garde being an accepted and even encouraged concept.

>Claptrap/Level Crossing
Is using coughs as part of the beat a thing in this scene? Randomer has a great track with coughing in it and Claptrap also has plenty of it. Not as grandiose as Punters Step Out, it's somewhat bare but has plenty going for it when he abuses the claps. Still has that thing I like in this type of music of doing p unexpected and somewhat out of place things with the sound.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihl6dkMg_Uk
Level Crossing delivers more on the bass. This track is better than the A side, it's a lot more colorful with it's tribal and dub vibe.

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (2010)
>indie rock
Above all, this is a pleasant album. The only truly unpleasant track here is the repetitive, flat-out dumb "Rococo", while the rest occupies a really simple, pleasing, Springsteen-influenced rock sound. The title track is by and large my favorite, a nostalgic, sun-drenched ode to suburban childhood that cleverly plays into the dense, apocalyptic concept of the record, it's themes and melodies returned to multiple times throughout the record. Thrashy "Month of May" and kaleidoscopic "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" are other highlights, showing off the band's chemistry as well as the vocal talents of both Butler and Chassange. The rest is boring and monotonous beyond belief. It's clever conceptually, at times. Sadly, the concept seems like more of an afterthought than everything, it's lyrically and musically all over the place. It works really poorly as an album as a result of that, it's all over the place yet it really doesn't have that many highlights. It's sure as shit better than Everything Now, albeit not without it's own incredibly obvious problems.

Neil Young - Tonight's the Night (1975)
>country rock, folk rock, singer/songwriter
The general reception of this album had me believe that this was significantly more dirgey and fucked-up than it actually is. It's rollicking country rock at its core. Full band tracks have every characteristic of the genre: slide guitars, upbeat drums, harmony vocals, they're really not that much different from anything else by Young. That being said, there's a very apparent looseness to this album that gives it the depressive, dirgey characteristics it's so well known for. The band always feels like it's on the verge of falling apart, and Young's vocals are /rough/. He's famously not a terribly great vocalist, and he outdoes himself here, he strains on every high note and his whine is horribly exaggerated. Somehow, this is a phenomenal thing. The strains and imperfections in Young's voice and the music allows the album to be completely stark and naked, especially on the few acoustic tracks like "Borrowed Tune". It's an incredibly emotional album at it's core, and it's loose, depressive takes on rollicking country rock acts as a perfect vehicle for Young and his band to express their innermost concerns and feelings. My favorite album of Young's thus far.

Queens of the Stone Age - Villains (2017)
>alternative rock
Ronson's production fares a lot better than I thought it would, it's generally Homme's desire to stay in a comfort zone that hurts this record. Synths and strings represent Ronson's additions to the sound, and they generally work really well, fitting naturally with the hard rocking sound and Homme's uncharacteristically pretty vocals. The songwriting is definitely fairly weak, though. Most songs here are about two minutes longer than they need to be, fading away horribly rather than burning out. The dancable sound is also a lot more unsubstantial than anything on Like Clockwork..., although that's not to say that upbeat dance-rock doesn't have a purpose. It occupies a spot in the modern rock world occupied by DFA 1979 and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Simple, stupid, mostly unsubstantial, also fun as hell.

Brockhampton - SATURATION (2017)
>pop rap
This starts off stronger than any other album I've heard from this year, the first three songs are all instant classics. "HEAT" goes hard as hell; "GOLD" is impressively catchy and chill; and "STAR" has some of the best rapping and wittiest lyricism I've heard all year. The rest is all well and good, but the collective has a rather obvious issue with consistency, and the poppy R&B sound isn't all that great. By the end of the album the album loses pretty much all its steam, despite never truly getting that bad. As demonstrated by something I'll be posting about in a bit, there's certainly a lot of potential here that's not completely realized.

Lil Uzi Vert - Luv Is Rage 2 (2017)
>trap rap, pop rap
Shocking in the modern day trap rap world in that it's actually a decently long, substantial album. It's incredibly repetitive and simple in it's approach, but dear god, I'm sick of 22-minute long albums that only consist of sketches rather than full tracks (I'm singing out one album in particular...). However, it does often seem like it consists of a bunch of throwaway tracks. They're fleshed out, just not particularly interesting. Uzi is consistently entertaining, and the production is cool and sleek, especially on both "Neon Gutz" and the obvious "Xo Tour Llif3". Besides these two tracks, there's not much else to latch onto here.

XXXTENTACION - 17 (2017)
>indie folk, alternative R&B
Yes, folks, we live in an age where an XXXTENTACION album has an "indie folk" primary genre on RYM, god help us all. "Jocelyn Flores" is actually really solid, the production is cool and XXX's rapping is impressive. The rest of this is either shitty, sadboi indie folk or meandering rocky R&B, it's terrible. Thee Oh Sees - A Weird Exits (2016)
>psychedelic rock, garage rock
Hits and rocks harder than any other Thee Oh Sees album. It's got some less-than-stellar drifting moments that take away from the blistering fast-paced rock that this band does so well, but GOD, do they do it welll. Krautrock has a large prominence here, which means that the drumming is absolutely incredible, and this style of drumming meshes so well with the thick, heavy guitars. So good.

Brockhampton - SATURATION II (2017)
>pop rap, west coast hip hop
An obvious improvement over their first album, despite the small time gap between the two. Every rapper improves significantly here, especially Champion and Wood, and the ones that were still great on the first album (Abstract and Vann), turn in their best work here. The production improves significantly as well, every beat here hits hard and gets lodged in your head. I'm still not a huge fan of the R&B sound, outside of that this is awesome. "Junky" is track of the year.

>Spork, French, he's on Metal Blade now huh makes sense
The juxtaposition of disparate elements is still *occasionally* genius but he's also run out of ideas to expand the style completely, more of the opposite, and the metal elements just don't hold up on their own, worst of all they're most prominent here compared to his other albums. The probably best track on here is the most focused, Robert, and it's almost purely Neurofunk

>Rashad Becker - Traditional Music Of Notional Species Vol. I
>Electroacoustic, Experimental
First album from an audio Mastering engineer, who's touched up more than a thousand other modern albums. It's no small triumph, the way Becker establishes his identity over heaps of mediocrity.
I'm not unfamiliar with electronic albums that strip down structure to focus on sound interactions. From the beginning, Becker is mimicking organic intonations through bending tones and playing back micropatterns. I haven't heard sinewy and sticky synths in such large amounts, yet still barely adhering to a central theme in each "dance" or "theme".
I can only imagine what psychedelic, exotic fauna Becker envisioned making these sounds; hence the album's title, "notional," a theoretical species.

>M.E.S.H. - Damaged Merc
>UK Bass, Post-industrial, Kuduro
I thought Piteous Gate was overrated, and not deserved of being the face of PAN. I shouldn't have given it a 3/10, when MESH is clearly capable of less aimless, club-smashing tracks like on this EP. The atypical Kuduro rhythms on Kritikal Thirst and Victim lord are especially mesmeric.

The old synths of Washed Out and off-beat jangles with a washed up singer.
Low Ceiling plays out more like industrial, and Carry is an uncomfortable listen. Pitched-up vocals repeating the track title to the same limping beat, one gets the impression it's coming from a point where the narrator of the album is tired and unstable to the point of incoherence.
This album is kinda like Gazelle Twins - Unflesh if it had a male counterpart. Hard to recommend to anyone who doesn't like weird pop.
5/10

>Broken Beat
Actress' sound palette with more hip hop. Puts "chill lo-fi instrumental beats for studying" to shame

>Valerio Tricoli - Miseri Lares
>Musique concrete, Electroacoustic
La Distanza opens the album with the dark brooding one comes to expect from Pan. The faintest of whispering, metal slams and gurgling synths, nothing unexpected of dark ambiance as it grows in volume, but the rumble of thunder took me out of it for how much it sounded like stock audio.
Hic Labor Ille Domus et Inextricabilis and Error are shorter excursions, both demonstrating the personal and tightly woven labors of digital processes. Oftentimes, however, the music reverts to small crescendoes ending in silences.

lamb vs trip up
>Final Fantasy - Spectrum 14th Century
Trying to be what Hearland became but it really doesn't have that much going for it other than this is ok but never breaks past that wall. It has that weirdly clinical feel I've been having with a bunch of the albums on this chart so far, might lower the score.
6/11
>Autechre - Gantz Graf
the first track was somehwat interesting but yet again this falls into the many issues that autechre releases have, they focused too much on making it "complex" but forgot to put effort into the music.

More like 1/7 HEYOO this shit was so forgettable. I thought Indie Folk and Singer Songwriter on RYM was meme tags. Nope.
>Lil Peep - Come Over When You're Sober 2/10
I think Lil Peep is the gayest rapper alive. You don't see Mykki Blanco going around with "Crybaby" and "DADDY" tattoed on prime cumshot locations.
>Bram Tchaikovsky - Strange Man, Changed Man 7/10
Decent power pop album. Some fun lyrics. Idk what they were thinking with that I'm a believer cover.
Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
Non-Stop Erotic SNOOZEFEST. Flat synthpop. When I like something I fuckin dance to it and I didn't get one gay-ass hip flick from this shit. Sex Dwarf is pretty good tho
>D'Angelo - Voodoo 9/10
Holy SHIIIIIIT this is fuckin SEXY
Sometimes it felt like I was gonna get a bad song but then it'd do something amazing and it would become a standout. Listen to this if you havent. Super good production too, the vocals are so nice and clear and mixed perfectly and have such nice dynamics. And the fuckin RED AND METHOD TRACK YOOOO
Oval - Diskont 94 6/10
I don't know, it was just kind of boring, but it sounded nice. I guess I cant appreciate the techniques or whatever.
Brockhampton - Saturation II 9/10
More consistent than one, better in all aspects, especially lyrics. Matt Champion and Ameer really stood out on this but JOBA has gotta stop doing those facial expressions. He should've kept his hair too.
The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed
FUUUUUCK ITS SO FUCKING GOOD THE SONGS AND THE THEMES AND THE SWEEPING ORCHESTRAL SCORE AND THE WRITING AND THE COVER ART IS A FACE SIDEWAYS AND THERE'S SO MANY MOMENTS I JUST WANNA GET UP AND START APPLAUDING BECAUSE ITS SO FUCKING GOOD

I'm baking bread, and for the first time I'm using course ground rye flour. Really excited to see how it turns out. It's on the first fermentation cycle right now, in about 15 minutes I'm gonna knead it again and shape the buns. I'm undecided on whether or not to coat it in sesame seeds, I feel like that's better on white bread.

>Gang of Four - Entertainment!
I always sorta wrote this record off for no real reason at all but it's actually pretty great. It's fairly standard post-punk but it's so consistent. The bass lines are bouncy and the guitars are sharp and aggressive, just a really great album all round. Also Damaged Goods is a fucking incredible song.
3.5
>Pere Ubu - Dub Housing
Why can't Dave Thomas front every band? The guy has such a presence on everything I've heard him do. However, I can't help but feel that this album pales in comparison the The Modern Dance. Some tracks like Dub Housing and Codex are incredible but others just leave a lot to be desired, especially when you know what this band is capable of.

It's probably because I went to a highschool with this one super edgy guy that in my friends' circle I pretty much replaced when I came to the school. He never washed his hair or uniform (his uniform was literally a darker colour than everyone elses and he got it buzzcut once at the beginning of every schoolyear) and wore sport style black glasses and a souvenir bowler hat and tried to look like some kind of security guard and bragged about going into detail on how he fucked his disabled girlfriend. He made expressions like that when he talked but joba is not a total complete edgy sped so that helps him a lot. I like brockhamptons twitters.

Update: bread is out of the oven and is a complete disappointment. It didn't rise nearly as much as I was expecting, so it's likely to be too dense for my taste. I guess I'll have to try 2/3 wheat flour and 1/3 rye next time, maybe let it ferment longer or use more yeast.

>Twiddle - Live at Nectar's (2014)
Ok, this is pretty silly and hard to take too seriously, but that's ok and admittedly probably some point anyway. It's feel-good music. Mark my words when I say this band will be a recognizable name in the upcoming years. The jam band circuit is limited but with a dedicated following and in need of up-and-coming acts that haven't already been doing it for decades. Just in the past year they've gone from small clubs to festival spots and supporting sets at Red Rocks. And only about half of the attention is from angry Phish fans.
Are the songs interesting? At best, most of the songs themselves are passable (except for the extremely upbeat and catchy "Daydream Farmer", which has been an unlikely obsession for me lately). The technical, proggy, funk of Phish is pretty clear here--down to specific songs ("Jamflowman")--which has prompted criticism. They're also from the same hometown as Phish, and that "Nectar" in the title should sound familiar. They also have this strong reggae influence--the type that the local jam band is probably playing at the club in your town. Fortunately, just about every song features some extensive improvisation that shows off some tight, dynamic musicianship. The draw is often this ability to change song structures entirely, and the bass and drums are especially good at shifting on a dime to support the prominent electric guitar peaks, as on closer "Syncopated Healing".

Liars - TFCF (2017)
>experimental rock, electronic
What I've heard of Liars has always really rubbed me the wrong way. They're consistently one of the most interesting semi-popular bands around, hopping between genres with nearly every release, yet they've never been able to really hone in their sound on a solid, cohesive record. That is, until this album. I expected incredibly little from this, half from my previous experiences with the band, half because of that so-bad-it's-good cover. What I got was not a half-baked attempt at a genre I love (They Threw Us All in a Trench...), or some boring, grimy beats. I got a despondent, singular, wholly /weird/ mess of an album that somehow entirely works. The vocals are the worst aspect, discount Nick Cave doesn't suit this style well, but the production and the songwriting is insane. The more electronic tracks don't make much of an impression, it's when they meld these electronic elements with dusty, damn-near western-influenced soundscapes that this album really hits its stride. When it does this, it's one of the best albums of the year.

>Fleur - Пpикocнoвeниe. This is some pretty divine dream pop with something of a chamber element based heavily around orchestration. Pulatova's vocals are absurdly comfy especially on the later tracks.

Mount Eerie - 7 New Songs
So, well, in my journey trough Transgodcore i'm hearing Art Angels for the first time, this album has been spamed here since it came out and i gnored because i thought it was just conventional electro pop and it results that... it's just conventional electro pop, did transgod felt for the meme? i don't see what this has of unique, i will listen it again but idk, what this album good again guys? the production? the composition? or it's just grimes fan service?

As of like yesterday, they've released two great albums in one year, and they'll probably release another before the year's up
It's an easy bandwagon
Oren Ambarchi - Hubris
>progressive electronic, krautrock
This was a great album. It perfectly scratched my itch for long, patient krautrocky jams with extremely well produced synths and instrumentation. Part 1 is essentially a rhythmic drone piece, too steady to be ambient but not purcussive enough to be rock. It’s very comfy, with the textures of the punchy synth and the tinniness of what sounds like a high guitar string complementing each other very well to create a hypnotizingly pultating backbone as more small sounds are added layer by layer over the 22 minute runtime. Honestly its a very nice piece, but I feel like it dragged on a bit near the end, and probably could have been a few minutes shorter without losing much. Part 2 acts as a short bass guitar interlude between the two longer tracks on here, and its pretty interesting texturally but ultimately a bit forgettable compared to parts 1 and 3.
Part 3, by the way, is a goddamn masterpiece. I wish I could go back in time and listen to this last year when it came out so I could give it my Song of the Year. At its core, it is very similar to Part 1, with the same pulsing synths, albeit at a slightly faster pace. However, the addition of live drumming and power electronics to the same skeleton gives the piece an absolutely frightening amount of intensity that makes my heart pound every time I listen to the feverish climax that extrends througout the track’s second half. Its the same descent into absolute chaos that makes me love James Murphy’s longer synth-based production like DoYaThing and Yeah (Crass Version), and I’d say this is one of the best examples of the style that I’ve heard yet.
