yh it is. Nymphomaniac is more like Antichrist. I'd try Dogville/Dancer in the Dark/The Idiots first. People like Breaking the Waves but I thought it was just a worse version of Dancer in the Dark.
Melancholia is hte only one I find really good though, I fucking love Kirsten Dunst.

I was expecting this whole thing to be like なったんじゃない, so I'm glad it wasn't. But now I'm just confused because the rest just sounds like a mix of post-rock and slowcore/emocore to me. That's cool though given that this came out in 1989, I guess. I probably don't "get" it, but I did enjoy what I heard.

disc 2 of Jürg Frey / Radu Malfatti - II is really solid stuff that expands on the use of background noise in quartet.
秋山徹次 - Route 13 to the Gates of Hell: Live in Tokyo blends blues rock with lowercase if you want more like the guitar stuff in Assente.
Michael Pisaro - Tombstone is a "poppier" lowercase record, using a lot more elements of choral music and modern classical. Julia Holter is also on it, which is always a plus.
other good goods:
Bernhard Günter - Un peu de neige salie is more or less the first lowercase record, so that's not a bad pick.
Nikos Veliotis & Klaus Filip - Slugabed is a whole album like track 2 of quartet.
Keith Rowe & John Tilbury - Duos for Doris is a must listen if you haven't already heard it. not really onkyo, but it uses similar techniques and is amazing.

Very nice. 'Spem in Alium' is the standout piece, and the other short ones are pretty good as well. Less enthusiastic about 'Gaude Gloriosa Dei Mater.'

Tuco - Menomena - I Am The Fun Blame Monster
The drums are unbearable, cymbal and hi-hat hits constantly with comparitively relaxed melody and rhythm sections, and it's way too loud. The rest of the music is alright, even if it is unoriginal at times.
The singer is kinda shit as well, with little character except for the voice cracks. Last track was pretty good except for the atrocious singing.

>Chamber Pop
A half-orchestra, half band producing the equivalent of uncomfortably warm milk. It has the unfortunate similarities of commercial music, and its minimalism influences end up hurting more than helping. I guess that Zopf is what I dislike most about the album, a composition spanning 7 of its tracks, but single works like Chartered Flight and The Sound of Someone You Love are much more interesting as pieces of this album.

1-100 is piano minimalism in the traditional cinematic sense, played at half the speed it was recorded. Adding the serene and stereotypical chords, you get the image of drops of water trickling off an edge of sorts, falling into a small pool. Perhaps too long, as 27 minutes, most people here will dislike this track for how stupidly simple it is. The mood shift is gradual, but not absent.

Bell Set No. 1 is a big fuck you to instruments used for meditation (gongs, cymbals, chimes). It begins like clockwork, but as the album's title implies, it decays, sorta? It doesn't really "decay" ala Disintegration Tapes.

Third track is 1-100 but with smaller time intervals.
Listen to this for the first track, switch to third if you don't like it.

>Harold Budd - The Pavilion of Dreams
>Minimalism, Jazzy Ambient
I may be hypocritical for liking the echoing sax, glockenspiel and electric piano on the first track, given how cheesy the combination should be, but also having dislike for Penguin Cafe. I assume it's preference for atmosphere.

The second track evokes images of Noir, with a harp and opera lead saying "ah". The third steps back with a background choir and the addition of a Celesta and more piano. Very understated.

Juno is the most striking work, beginning and ending in dissonance, with the voices of the Obscure label's musicians (Eno, Bryars, White, and Nyman) audible halfway through.

>Ought - More Than Any Other Day. This is a great post-punk album. Quite appreciate Tim Darcy's eclectic vocal style in addition to the guitar layering that in a sense reminds me of DEVO.
>Ought - Sun Coming Down. This is a marginal improvement over their previous release and starts off far stronger with the track Men For Miles, opening with a sharp guitar riff before harking back to familiar territory. The Combo features jangly guitars on top of a laser-precise drum pattern.
>Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold. Its not as great as I was expecting, though it is still pretty good overall, still liked N Dakota.
>The Soft Moon - Deeper. This builds on the atmosphere of the self-titled record whilst emphasizing stronger production as evidenced on the first two tracks "Inward" and "Black" where the volume of the sound layers is toyed with. Vasquez' also fills up the album to a greater capacity with his dark vocals that bring the tracks together in a story-like manner, one that honestly seems like it'd serve as a replacement to the Shadow the Hedgehog soundtrack, and I don't mean that as an insult.
>The Soft Moon - s/t. This is another post-punk artist, this time in the shape of a solo project from the multi-instrumentalist and producer Luis Vasquez, the album manifests itself as a colder take on Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails with a stronger shift towards post-punk rather than industrial rock. The atmosphere of this album is thick and edgy, augmented by the sparse gaspy vocals atop dissonant guitar tones and a lower BPM compared to many other post-punk contemporaries.

Way better than I remember it being when I first tried it back in 2015. The Branca influence on this is really clear, they even copy some of his chord structures. But damn it still rocks. The cover of 'I Wanna Be Yr Dog' kicks lots of ass, Kim's vocals are eerie as fuck, and 'She's in a Bad Mood' is just insanity. This might grow above Daydream Nation for me in the future.

Finally grew the courage to listen to this last night as I was drifting off to sleep, and holy fuck what an experience it was. At one point, I just started laughing out loud uncontrollably for no reason. Another point, I got lost in the drone so much, and when I came back to reality, I looked at my hands and freaked out bc I thought they were wrinkled and old. It was the most surreal experience I've ever had listening to an album. The binaural effects make this album not only more intense at some points, but also more soothing as well. I'm convinced this really is the sound of traveling through time, put onto record. The rating of this would be much higher if it weren't so gimmicky, tho. The drone itself falls in the 3.5 range, the binaural effects bring it up to 4, but if the headphones weren't required, and this album wasn't so specific and situational, it would easily be up there with my favorite drones ever.

One of the cutest IDM albums around. It evokes the same childlike wonder that Boards of Canada gets at so well, completely eschewing the melancholic tendencies so prominent in albums like Music Has the Right to Children. While that album elicits dusty photo album visions of childhood, Iaora Tahiti is much more in the moment, the perfect score to all the fun memories of childhood. It repeats a lot of the same motifs over and over, it's overlong, and it ends with 13 minutes of silence (honestly I'd probably rate this a 3 if it weren't for that). It's got a bunch of very obvious, irritating issues, but it's a cool album nonetheless.

I came into this with incredibly high hopes for the "proto-punk" the RYM genre tags promised me, and left it absolutely blown away by the more ambient portions. The a-side is primarily ambient (save for most of "Isi"), and it's absolutely beautiful, blows anything from their debut out of the water. "Isi" is noteworthy for making the generally robotic and emotionless motorik groove incredibly beautiful, and "See Land" and "Leb' Whol" are both purely, utterly beautiful ambient pieces. The b-side (save for "E-Musik", the album's least eventful ambient piece) is where the proto-punk comes in, and while it's good, I find it a bit underwhelming compared to the stunning a-side. "Hero" is the best track on the b-side, a punky thrash that's completely out of place in NEU!'s discography. This same style is continued on "After Eight", the closer, albeit in a less inventive and breakneck manner. Less inventive and experimental than their debut, but definitely more enjoyable.

Roy Haynes - Out of the Afternoon (1962)

Haynes didn't grab me on We Three, and he doesn't grab me on this. This is a bit better than that album because he's got the endlessly inventive Rahsaan Roland Kirk on board, but Haynes' style of jazz is very uneventful and unobtrusive. The group interplay is solid, even though Kirk overshadows pretty much every other musician here. "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Snap Crackle" are both great tracks, the rest does little for me.

AWESOME post-bop, by far Coltrane's best post-bop album. The timbre of his sax on here is just so good, the drums are undeniable, his playing is excellent, everything is just great about this. I loved it.

Objectively, a very impressive album. This is a free improv album made by two dudes who saw bands like MC5 and Velvet Underground live and said "hey, we can do that" and so they did it in their kitchen. This thing is dense and noisy and definitely rocks, but its not totally clicking for me. All of my RYM friends seem to love this, but I thought it was just pretty good. im sure it will grow on me in the near future.

Roberto Cacciapaglia - Sei Note in Logica

A very intriguing minimalism release. I can’t say I have the most experience with this genre but like the few other pieces I’ve heard, it relies heavily on repetitive instrumentation and incredibly subtle sonic changes. The piano work on the album is great, just chugging along in the background, pairing nicely with the ensemble of strings. What makes this album work isn’t just these two instruments however. Glitchy electronics pop around in the forefront, adding this bizarre, semi-grating soundscape. Elements come and go at a fairly predictable rate, building and falling away in an almost cyclical fashion. Vocals also appear on the album and surprisingly enough, they seem to be the key to this album’s success. They add just enough to the album’s repetitive atmosphere to keep this from getting stale or uninteresting.

I’m never quite sure *how* much I like minimalism but it’s such an intriguing sound that it kind of just sticks in my head for a while. Don’t think I appreciate this sound as much as others but in a weird way, I’m starting to enjoy how this style manages to feel meditative one day and absolutely frustrating another, depending on my mood or state of mind. I think it works for both and I’m not sure why.

Ground Zero - Revolutionary Pekinese Opera Ver.1.28

This album is just an absolute clusterfuck of sounds, samples and ideas throw into a blender and pasted into an album. The overarching theme of the album is a little lost on me - I’ve never heard the original and I’m confused as to why you’d re-do something already so strange and obscure. Regardless, this album manages to sound shockingly engaging. There’s peaceful passages, extended vocal sampling and pounding Zorn-esque free jazz pieces. They’re sequenced in a way that keeps you on your toes and consistently entertained. The opener isn’t as abrasive as the rest of the album and kind of soothes you into the later craziness. “Paraiso - 1” seems to be in the perfect position - a nice little break in the middle of all the chaos. Same with Part 2, which is a lovely breather at the end of such a strange listen.

Not something I can see myself quite loving but it’s an incredibly unique piece of music, one so strange and scattered I can’t really write about it properly. Not quite sure if the score I gave it reflected how much I liked it - but I'll have to come back and retry this soon. Cool stuff regardless.

Prurient - Pleasure Ground (2006)

Considering that this is the fourth or so release I've heard from Prurient that I don't care for, I should probably chalk it up that I'm just not a fan of the guy's work. His style of noise is one that doesn't get me at all, it's totally powerless and it drifts far too much. There is a brief foray into lowercase/ambient stylings with "Outdoorsman / Indestructible", but it's so damn quiet that you can't even hear what's going on unless you turn it up an insane amount. And when you turn it up, all that's revealed is a boring spoken word piece. Prurient has always been good at creating atmospheres, I have to give him that, but his albums are always total slogs.

A dark, twisted IDM album. I've never heard the more famous Stena Tarnyt, but from what I could gather that's a folky glitch pop album in the same vein as Four Tet. This is absolutely nothing like that, baring more similarities to jungle and industrial. It's thirty minutes of some of the most foreboding, absolutely banging beats of the year. The last track, acoustic instrumentation and all, is a definite mood killer, and it's admittedly disjointed as hell, but it's impossible to deny the amazing production chops that went into this.

African electronic music is really cool, I've come to realize. To be fair, this shares very few similaries with what most come to associate "african music" with, having more in common with the minimal synth of Oppenheimer Analysis and Monoton. It doesn't always hit, mainly due to the relative thinness and lack of power that the synths have. When it does hit, it's one of the weirdest, coolest records of the year.

Despite how much I love disco, even I can't stomach the length of some of these mixes. This is more prominent on the second disc, especially with the last couple of songs (save for "4 Ever My Beat"), there's just not enough quality rhythms and grooves to justify mixes of such extreme length. The first disc hits, though, and it hits /hard/. "Sun... Sun... Sun..." is most certainly one of the classics of the disco genre, and "It's a Better Than Good Time" and "You Are My Love" don't fall far behind. The second disc also has some hits with the two Arthur Russell tracks that start it off, but the drop in quality is certainly noticeable as soon as "I've Been Searching HIts". Worth a listen for any fan of disco or even electronic dance music as a whole. The roots of house are right here.

it's nothing like any of his other albums for sure, completely took me by surprise when the teaser dropped. closest to False Fades I guess, also released posthumously this year. there's hints of similar synth-work and darkness but on a polar opposite genre. The last track is intentionally and thematically out of place, and fits in perfectly to me cause of that, fades directly into that unstable tense guitar riff after the calm ending of Dirt Beet.

>The Incredible Jimmy Smith - Back at the Chicken Shack (1963)

What a 1963 sound this is--the Hammond organ, the undeniable grooviness almost swept under the rug. This is more of the standards variety than exploratory, which I'll talk about, and it reminds me a bit of Booker T. & The M.G.'s' Green Onions as the one of the quintessential organ albums. They're not trying to reinvent the wheel here, which is fine, because a mastery of conventional form is just as good as breaking new ground as far as I'm concerned. I'm no organ expert, so don't quote me on this, but Jimmy Smith has just about set the standard for traditional organ solos here. I recognize that same structure he employs on the title track and a couple afterwards in countless acts today--the variety of solos that makes you think not "how did he think of that?" but rather "how did he know to play that?" It's paint-by-numbers in a spectacular way, and only Stanley Turrentine's sax is interested in really breaking convention in "When I Grow Too Old to Dream", which I can't help but think is a slight misstep in the direction of this album, surprisingly enough.

>T. Rex - Electric Warrior (1971)

What did I have against this? Nothing, because I hadn't heard it. But I suspected it might have been an in-your-face, hard rocking, show-off-y album, which happens to not present itself high up on my list of things to listen to. It's really not the case here, as this is much more restrained than your typical glam rock or Bowie album. Even the song you already know, "Bang a Gong (Get It On)", is more laid back than I remember it being. T. Rex originally got their start as Tyrannosaurus Rex, a psychedelic folk group, which I haven't heard yet, but I believe that folk side is more telling of the sound here than any hard rock elements, and it even ventures closer to a pop sound.

I thought for sure this album had been recorded at Abbey Roads until I looked it up, as I think the biggest draw here is the mood set by some stellar, nuanced production. Most of the tracks, starting with opener, "Mambo Sun", have this cool, silky smooth and laid back, daydream haze of a vibe thanks to layers upon layers of carefully selected sounds: the bass notes paired with some vague and echo-y percussive sound and droning backing vocals that sound like a shehnai on the opening track. The songwriting is occasionally catchy with some pleasant but repetitive melodies, but I find it overall passable in terms of getting the sound they aim for across. At any given second during this album just stop and dissect how many layers you hear, what kind of uncovnetial sounds you're hearing, and marvel at how it all fits together in a way that those sounds belong and could've slid by undetected.

i doubt it's stinginess, or that your taste is so high god forbid anything gets a 4.5, or a 5. you wouldn't be listening to so much music in the first place if you didn't enjoy most of what you hear. so is 4.5 reserved for some of the best music you've ever heard in your entire life? i don't really get that review philosophy where you almost refuse to enjoy something too much.

i've never seen a chart like that here. If you're thinking of natkingcole, they've just got a unique rating scale, their 5/10 being the equivalent of a 6 or 7 for other people.

Looking at the rym's of some daily users, the peak of the bell curve usually lands around 7 or 6, which is usually a "yeah I like this". Meme rating systems like >>74552271 points out here can give the appearance that someone hates something, when usually they just don't feel like being ultra-specific about their preferences for albums, like jimmy jazz

I enjoy the majority of what I listen to, a lot of it being it's stuff I pick myself. /daily/ is about exploring music, but lots of people clearly have preferences for genres, which is where scores can become variable.

My 5s and 4.5s are basically just a spot where I put my all time favorite albums. Just because I score something lower doesn't mean that I don't enjoy it, I'm just having fun pretending to be a critic. Also when it comes to /daily/, I think that exploring new music is fun, even if I'm not a fan of everything that I hear. Being able to talk to other people about it is a plus too.
