I don't know whether this should go here or not, but it's vaguely related so fuck it. I bought a keyboard/controller a while ago but haven't done anything with it. Are there any resources you guys could suggest when it comes to learning how to play? In terms of theory and generally anything else. Something similar to JustinGuitar but for keyboard/piano.

Also I was wondering what a good interface/program would be, just to hear myself play, instead of using a DAW since I'm not looking to record, just hear myself and maybe have a visual aid when it comes to the notes, etc.

Thanks guys.

Do you know anything like that that's within the same price range? I'm a bit strapped for cash and I was really only planning on using the keyboard as a controller/something to play VSTs and whatnot with, I don't see myself needing to play with a controller-type keyboard without a computer.

Pirate the complete one.
When you're first starting out you don't want to find yourself quitting a tutorial because the guy started using a part of the DAW that you don't have.

So is the op-1 just a meme item or am i getting trolled? I like the ability of sampling radio stations and the tape sequencer thingy is nice too. What else would you recommend for that kind of money
>>
>>74424833
I would get it if I had the money, but you will catch some hate from people here. Obviously it has it's limitations, but the workflow looks fantastic imo. There really isn't much else like it, except maybe the critter and guitari organelle.

At the price point though, you may actually consider picking from the roland boutique series, if you're set on spending money on hardware.
>>
>>74424833
I think it should be used more as a "fun" thing rather than a "useful" one, since everything you can make with it, you can do with much more control on a DAW.
If you have the money to spend on something "nice" then I'm sure the OP-1 is great, but if you're looking for something to improve your songs, then there are far better uses for that money.

So, /prod/, any new cool technique you've been experimenting with lately?

Today I took some chords and sidechained different parts of it to three different sources that repeat at different rates, and added LFOs to a few parameters.
The result is a sound that "filters" polyrhythmically and constantly changes.
Here it is:
https://clyp.it/zqrk2ayr
The 1st two 8-bar loops have the effect on, the third fades it out, and the fourth is dry.

What do you guys think?
Would you use it in a song?

Look into Phil Spector's wall of sound.
Essentially you can use samples of two or more instruments (a guitar and a piano for example) and synchronise them perfectly to create an entirely different instrument.
Brian Wilson mentioned this technique and how he implemented it in Pet Sounds in his 1976 interview.
>>
>>74426321
Is this what's now commonly known as layering or is it something completely different?
Because similar techniques have been used everywhere in modern electronic music, if I'm understanding correctly.

I'll check it out now, thank you.
>>
>>74426321

>>
>>74426224
I've rotated the midi of the sources so each part is now sidechained to a different one, and hardpanned the whole thing left, when imported the old version and hardpanned it right.

>>74425550
I go for long periods away too :( Its tough to get back into it. I like those arps though!

Personally, I think its good to get a solid workflow down. Load up instruments/ make sounds, then come back later and try to make something creative with them. Thats what I've been trying lately anyway.

>>74426321
>>74426356

>pretty cool gating
They're not gates. Just compressors.

The effect also has a macro knob that inverts the effect.
Here's an example:
https://clyp.it/2rj12ou3
1st 8-bar loop is the normal effect, the second changes to its inverse version, the third one is the inverted one, and the fourth one fades the whole thing out.

I don't think it sounds very good in this case, but it could be useful somewhere else.
>>
>>74426625
Yea i mean i got that figured but some actual help on finding those frequencies would be much appreciated
>>
>>74426774
Rap over it

Or play some trumpet over it
>>
>>74426939
sweep a notch or peak until you find it

what i like to do is go to a sound and filter out the prominent frequencies then i take that filter and move it to the conflicting sound

another rule of thumb is to always remove frequencies you dont really need, for example the "highpass out low/sub frequencies on all your sounds except the dedicated sub and kick tracks" rule

www.soundgym.co has a "game" that can help you learn to find it by ear but it limits what games you can try you with a paywall. i like it but not really enough to pay for it yet
>>
>>74423352
>what is the haas effect best used for?
widening a thing. i pretty much never use it.

i've got a noticable void in my mix and i'm trying to fill it up, but nothing seems to be the right piece of the puzzle

desu it's probably just your song/arrangement- if you feel the need to rely on widening one little thing you've got a bigger problem to address

layering them how?

>>
>>74427408
It's hard to say without an example of what should be improved, but generally you should layer them, EQ them (individual layers and overall) to remove useless frequencies and boost the important ones, and most importantly, use compressors and/or transient shapers to make the attack stronger.

Also the sidechaining of the other tracks, and if you have bad mixing you can end up having them sound weaker.
>>
>>74426719
I won't deny that he introduced the technique to the recording world in regards to production-only techniques. However all he did was make doublings and monophonic textures with the use of overdubbing so as to not have them play together.
>>
>>74427486
Not him, but I think he means taking a sound that's strong in the low end and layer it with a sound that's strong in the mids/highs (depending on the type of drum and the result you want) to make a more complete one that has the good qualities of both the sounds you started with.
>>
>>74427486
You find another sample which complements the one you're using. For example if your kick has a good low end but the other frequencies are too weak, find one with stronger higher frequencies and eq them so they have a stronger sound that's coherent to what you're trying to achieve.

I have "serious" projects in the works but don't post them because I don't need mix advice from producers that are still learning or validation. The only more "complete" songs I hear here generally suffer from really shitty mixing or being rather derivative. I don't think more serious musicians need anything from /prod/, I only come to give advice

Is there a way in Ableton Live to do some sort of automation where the EQ settings change for each slice of a track so I don't have to create a thousand tracks with short slices each?
I'm trying to do some harmonic frequencies experiment
>>
>>74430867
Put the EQ in a rack, then duplicate that channel (inside the rack) as many times as you need settings, then click on "chain" (above the chain list), drag all the blue markers all the way to the right, so they become long horizontal strips, then click on one of them and then "distribute ranges equally".
Now click on the numbered bar on top of the blue markers, and map the chain selector to a macro.

Now when you turn that macro knob you'll switch between the various EQ settings, so set each one to what's required for the section and use the know to switch between them.

Alternatively you can simply automate the ON/OFF switch of each one.

But it depends on whether it changes abruptly (this method will work) or gradually (it won't).
Either way, I'd map each parameter to a macro in a rack so that when the rack is at 0% the EQ is doing nothing, and as I move it to 100% the parameters slowly come to their position.
This way I can "fade-in" the EQs section by section without any abrupt changes.

>>

played around with a stock FL studio synth and came up with some basses

is there potential to make a track out of them? I might need some songs to reference but the only one which I know of is this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XJkPtxqWM8 and that's

>>74431975
They do have potential but i suggest you avoid making yet another bass house/bassline/future house track that just literally puts on repeat the same bar of bass, try to mix it up by kinda morphing it as it progresses.

Thinking about getting a Behringer UMC22 for like 60 bucks. The Steinberg and Focusrite interfaces are pretty expensive, whereas the reviews on the Behringer are pretty good and it's about half the price.

Does size matter when it comes to studio monitors?

I'm thinking about purchasing Rokits 6's but I've noticed a comment on a video stating that producing/mixing in a basic room with the 6's is overkill and a 5 inch would work fine.

I'm not really well informed on the intricacies of studio monitors so your input is greatly appreciated.

It's about a 180 dollar difference so it's no big deal but if it's overkill then why not save my money.

Nope. It mostly sounds like shit cause you can't mix, master or do sound design properly but if you have good ideas you'll still make shit that has potential.

Except they still are. And that's not how that Scarlett works. If you want to understand it better look into it. If what you just explained was actually the case a shit load more people would hold onto their Scarlett's purely for conversion.

>>74442027
I can't find a wiring diagram or even a block diagram specific to Focusrite. However, according to Focusrite support, line level signals do pass through the variable gain circuitry on their combo jack inputs but are not colored in this process because these circuits are designed to be transparent to line level signals. While the preamps CAN be used to increase the gain of line level inputs, they don't NEED to be used in this way. This is a fairly standard practice among all decent manufacturers and even Behringer.

Also, an external dedicated DI is likely superior to the high impedance circuitry inside any entry-level interface, and may provide a more desirable input signal. An external preamp is almost certainly going to have better tone than the built-in Focusrite ones, particularly if it's tube-based and can lend more guitar-friendly tone to the input signal.

https://clyp.it/kvihfksz
>>
>>74442549
I took the "transparent" claim more as a bogus descriptor from focusrite- those pres arent transparent in any sense.

A di would probably sound better, but there are probably more steps sideways available in the way of budget interfaces and di combinations that still wouldn't be as good as just putting the money toward a quality interface.

That anon never said anything else- his problem is probably software related. I just hate The 2i2 lol
>>
>>74442919
Yeah that's totally off. I've looked up tabs for it a while ago and it was spot on though..? Just fill in the chords top down (using the guitar as a reference point for leading tones/harmony)

Also I don't like they way you put the vocal melody in the arrangement js
>>
>>74443120
I wasn't going for exact, it's kind of my take on it. I use a lot of extended chords. I do agree with removing the vocal melody, though.
>>
>>74443099
I have to say I'm pretty disappointed in Focusrite myself, their control software is garbo and I'm not impressed with the pres. That said, they are good at conversion, especially for the price point. I think I hate the 2i4 as much as I hate Behringer, RCA is useless shit and I can't believe an ostensibly decent manufacturer would use them for line level outputs

Ableton and FL Studio have their own advantages and disadvantages, so I can't say which is the best.
What I can say is that if you're a beginner, pirating Ableton Suite is the way to go, since if you want to learn something and look for tutorials, chances are you'll find many in Ableton, but not necessarily in FL.

Also you can get most FL Studio's native plugins (all the main ones) as separate VSTs, but not Ableton's, so if you get Ableton you can have the best of both worlds, while if you get FL, you'll only have FL stuff (plus third party stuff, but that's the same for both DAWs).

Ableton fag here.
>VST 2.0 came out in 1999
>VST 3.0 came out in 2008
>VST 3.5 came out in 2011
>VST 2.0 was discontinued in 2013
>Ableton Live only supports VST 2.0

I love Ableton but seriously wtf
Go for Cubase anon, I would but I'm already used up to Live
>>
How do I into synths that dont sound terrible?
I'm a hip-hop producer currently trying to use Serum
>>
>>74449763
Learn the qualities of the sound you're trying to produce and learn how to emulate those qualities with your chosen synth
>>
>>74449530
And what practical advantage would using VST3 give me?
>>
>>74449854
Exact copy+paste from wikipedia as it seems you're unable to google:

>Audio Inputs for VST Instruments
>Multiple MIDI inputs/outputs
>Optional SKI (Steinberg Kernel Interface) integration
>VST 3.5 Changes included note expression, which provides extensive articulation information in individual note events in a polyphonic arrangement. This supports performance flexibility and a more natural playing feel.

But the important part is that the industry keeps growing and moving forward, so new VSTs will only be created in VST 3.0+ formats, and older ones will be updated to VST 3.0 (As happened with for example Antares Auto-Tune and Rolands VSTs to name some)

Also FL Studio interface is more used for latino reggaeton music... so if you're into that that could be a decisive point...
If you want the absolute best for just recording without live instruments go for Pro Tools
If you want the best of recording, live performance and plug in compatibility go for Cubase, go crazy with VSTs and you're golden

>>

When you're trying to learn synthesis downloading 15 different vst's is not good advice desu. Serum is more than capable of making basically any sound. He should learn it to the best of his ability.

I want an UR22 but does anyone know if the latency is low enough that I can record a part, then play it back and record a second part live then keep doing that til I have 6-7 tracks for a full one-man-band song?

I used a cheap USB mic w/o interface and everything I recorded was out of tempo due to lag from what I was hearing vs. what I was playing

>>74450859
yeah youll be fine. you can compensate for lag in your daw, try that first. (you should upgrade but stil)
>>
>>74451408
well been using fl studio for a year but just switched to ableton like a month ago

finally picking it up I feel, what you reckon then mate?
>>
>>74450859
i have the ur22 and it has a mix knob you can use for direct recording with no latency but you will not be able to hear your other tracks at the same time

on my machine if you set it to 64 sample buffer the lowest latency is 8-9 ms round trip latency
>>
>>74451736
You better have a good computer for 64 samples or else it's going to force the CPU and sound like shit after a couple of tracks/fxs.

I don't use Nexus but it seems like the copy protection for the newer versions hasn't been cracked yet, since the latest version on AudioNews is from 2009!

ReFX.Nexus.v2.2.VSTi.RTAS.DVDR-AiRISO

Get on AudioNews if you're not already. They have open sign-ups right now I think.

thx anon, seems like open sign-ups are only the first two days of the month so I'll have to wait
>>
>>74452719
The only real complaint I have about Serum, other than it being CPU hungry, is that it tends to sound very digital. There are ways to remedy this, though (modulating pitch slightly for that analog oscillator drift, throwing a tape saturation effect on it, etc).

>>74452808
It's absolutely worth waiting to sign up. I don't know why everyone in /prod/ isn't on AudioNews by now. They have everything.

do expanders generate a natural sound?
i have an old single mic acoustic recording that has some heavy audacity compression and i want to restore it, but im supposing the expander would just half ass it because it doesnt know the compressors settings and would just try to do it by analyzing the transients

Here's a tip:

When you're working on your arrangement and can't figure out how to make the whole song flow good, try this. You need to have a breakdown in your arrangement. Just take everything before your breakdown and chop it off and put it at the end of your track, so your breakdown becomes your new intro.

I don't know why this works for me, but whenever I try to write the intro intentionally it never turns out as well as if I write it as a breakdown, and then decide to make it the intro and make the intro be the breakdown instead.
>>
>>74455368
good tip

i don't always use the "breakdown" (/middle 8 or whatever) but using variations of other parts of the song as a starting point always works for me

yeah it sounds pretty good so far but you should really throw in some lower frequencies
