The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Of course. I'm just having fun, not shitting on anyone even a little. Just insane to think that an album from RYM or Spotify selected randomly by a computer would probably be better than a listenalong album. Blows my mind.

>>74227366
that'd be kinda fun. each week the listenalong album is put up against one randomly selected album from rym's database.

Going to finally listen to the Arctic Monkeys tonight, perhaps I'll begin to understand the youth culture of the 2000's a bit more. I've never been much of a drinker myself nor one to partake in antisocial behavior or otherwise do cool poses in the doorway with "Do I Wanna Know?" blaring in the background. Rather I just sit here all day everyday, watch films/ read books/ solve second order vector equations and go to work when needed, so I doubt I'll relate to it at all. Got the feeling that it will have the same effect as the Strokes where the songs are somewhat enjoyable though pale in comparison to say Interpol.

No doubt, but a side project from a band member, a later album from an artist, a collaboration, an album that inspired a more popular one, a lesser-known album on a popular record label, etc. These are quality places to look, no?

Sure but those are also boring and safe choices. I think the listenalong has been doing a decent job of bringing people out of their comfort zone though admittedly with mixed results. However, I think this is because a fair amount of people here seem to prefer certain styles of music in a rather rigid manner.

There have been quite a few interesting listenalong albums that I would never have listened to otherwise and even those that I didn't like were good experiences.

>>74227955
It's not written in stone, but if half of daily has heard your album already then what's the point of using it as a listenalong?

Salvia Palth is straight awful. I never understood why he, Sam Ray, Car Seat Headrest, Coma Cinema, etc. achieved success while the countless others never made more than 10 complete plays on bandcamp. I hated that music in its day. Somehow I hated that era of bedroom sadboys who went through adolescence in the era of Have a Nice Life, Phil Elverum relevence, emo revival, slowcore repopularity, and availability of cheap self recording. Even though I played a variant of it too I somehow always held my nose up in reference to it even as a young teen.

>Earthless - Rhythms From a Cosmic Sky
There isnā€™t much to this album in terms of depth, but itā€™s not trying to be deep. Itā€™s filled to the brim with fun, spacey, heavy psych jamming and macho riffage. It reminds me of a slightly less interesting Boris or Acid Motherā€™s Temple. Worth a listen if youā€™re into that stuff.

>Tuxedomoon - Desire
This album is fantastic but mostly because it caters directly to my musical tastes. I am not surprised that it is kind of a divisive album judging by peopleā€™s rym ratings. I have always had a soft spot for post-punk, especially the bands that have that funky rhythmic core to them. Desire is a blend of contemporary post-punk and electronic with some odd darkjazz and orchestral elements thrown in. Likely due in part to touring with the Residents at the time. What results is a totally unique and off-the-wall aesthetic where you have organ synths, sultry sax, and wailing violin playing over motorik bass beats and droning squalls of guitar noise. Have I ever mentioned how in love Iā€™m in with the saxophone? Not to mention the powerful vocal performances, ranging from spoken word to flat out yelling, complete with biting anti-consumerism lyrics. Though often lacking subtlety ā€œDONā€™T THINK/GO BUYā€ ā€¦ ā€œLive a thousand lives by pictureā€ the catchiness of these repeated codas makes up for it. Definitely worth a listen if you havenā€™t heard it yet. My only gripe with this album is that they often donā€™t know how/when to end a song and rely on repetition. I suppose it fits the theme they are going for, but it makes for a less concise listen in parts.
>>
>>74229008
>Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel - Nail
A completely ridiculous and campy industrial synth broadway performance. Itā€™s very hard to dislike because of how hard it commits to its absurd style. And how could you with lines like ā€œDESTROYYY ALLLLL GIRRRRLSā€? It reminds me of a less sonically offensive Disco Volante. The overly macho and aggressive tone and lyrics clashes so well with the cabaret style and occasional backup vocals. All that being said, it goes a little too far with the cheese in places, and it just becomes silly (see: Descent Into the Inferno). It walks a fine line, but itā€™s always enjoyable and was well worth a listen. Pigswill has no business being as good of a song as it is.

ok so why no love for this song? It's literally one of ABBA's best. Sure the verse is kinda kitsch but couldn't the same be said about most of ABBA? It's kinda their thing. People say it's a re-write of Fernando but it reminds me more of a mix between Dancing Queen and SOS in its general structure. Imo it's a really creative pop piece and super slept on.

Watched your rec, I'M FISH

[Harakiri] (1962)

This is truly a beautiful film, aesthetically--the stark shots mirror the percussion-only score and blunt nature of the dialogue, storytelling, and general themes.

It shouldn't be a distraction, because this is much less interested in aesthetics--and at key moments, like the bookended shots of an empty suit of armor, against aesthetics--than it is in the internal, psychological, moral dilemma at the center of this film. In fact, the crux of the film lies exactly in this opposition of forces--between Tsugumo and the House of li, between Bushido and true passion, between the static and dynamic way of life.

Harakiri is in the same vein as the Romantic fiction of Melville and Hawthorne that was unified by this vision of a trial between a codified worldview predicated on a static and unchanging universe and one defined only by its constant flux (oftentimes literal trials as in Billy Bud, Sailor or The Scarlet Letter). Harakiri successfully and seamless portrays one worldview before flipping it completely upside down so that the same image--the suit of armor that opens the film as symbol of timeless honor--appears as an empty facade by the final still.
8/10

Anyone have another Criterion/Filmstruck rec (besides harakiri)?

Good-day /daily/, how are you all doing on this generous day? Finished reading Catcher in the Rye and started Stoner. Really trying to get through tons of books on the rush. Don't know what movie to watch tonight (Last Tango in Paris was far more graphic than preconceived). As for albums;

>Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not. Really enjoyed When the Sun Goes Down among others though otherwise pretty much what I expected, still great though.
>Black Tundra - s/t. I'll be honest admitting that as someone who is not overly knowledgeable of metal as a whole I have a hard time differentiating sludge metal artists from one-another, all of the songs sounded too similar to me even if the riffs were enjoyable and the guitars obviously on a pretty low tone.
>The Fall - New Facts Emerge. My first time listening to a Fall album, has a garage sound with numerous vocal effects which render Mark E. Smith's vocals near indecipherable. Couples Vs. Jobless & Brillo De Facto are pretty good.
>Waxahatchee - Ivy Tripp. Like the other albums I do not see how this is "folk-rock" at all, there is blatant use of distortion/fuzz pedals where otherwise the songs tend towards twee-pop/ jangle-pop. Breathless with a touch more reverb could pass of as shoegaze. Good album though, my favorite of her's yet.

>>74247026

Thanks for the advice. I'm listening to Live '77 right now and it's not really my thing, but I'll definitely give that a listen at some point.

>>74249484
The only Radiohead I've listened to is the opening track off of In Rainbows. I've missed out on a lot of popular artists because my taste in music became rigidly insular super quickly before I had a chance to explore things. Hopefully posting on daily can "fix" that.
Also that album is Fushitsusha live album, at least that's what I'm planning on listening to.
>>
>>74249676
How long have you been on /mu/ then? I mean Animal Collective, Death Grips, Radiohead etc. are all bands that you are practically obliged to listen to when you start going on here, I can't imagine that even people in /bleep/ and /classical/ haven't listened to them. Not that I'm complaining, you've got some great albums to look forward to. Thanks for telling me about that Fushitsusha album by the way.

>>
Deicide - Legion (1992)
>death metal

It's just typical death metal through and through, but it's appropriately infernal and tightly written and performed. When the band does have enough gusto to switch up the tempo, they do it incredibly, with impressive rhythmic finesse, but they don't do this nearly enough, preferring to instead stay in a midtempo comfort zone. Pretty good, nothing special.

2.5+

The Beach Boys - Beach Boys' Party! (1965)
>pop rock, rock & roll

I'd like this a whole lot more if it was actually legitimate, but this comes off as nothing more than a soulless cash grab to capitalize on the band's popularity. The attempts at humor are dire, the song selection is laughably bad (dear lord, the rendition of "The Times They Are A-Changin"), and it's incredibly obvious that this was just one last attempt by Capitol to milk the Beach Boys before Pet Sounds' release.

0.5

Arcade Fire - Everything Now (2017)
>alternative dance, synthpop

Arcade Fire isn't a band I normally like to begin with, but this is on another level of awfulness. I like "Creature Comfort", a lurchy, triumphant piece of gaudy 2010s synthpop, and hate every other track on this goddamn thing. Not a single track here has a halfway decent hook. Instead, vaguely melodic lines are sneered out by Butler, turning into an affected, mind-numblingly pretentious caricature of himself. Chassagne's vocals don't fare well either, her performance on "Electric Blue" ending up as one of the most grating vocal parts I've ever heard. I will say that the four singles are at least passable, but the band shoots themselves in the foot by putting three of them smack-bad at the beginning of the album. If you disregard the singles, and I don't say this lightly, this is one of the worst albums I have ever heard. This is my new least favorite album of 2017.

Fleet Foxes - Crack-Up (2017)
>progressive folk, chamber folk

By far the band's best work, but their ethos as a band still doesn't entirely appeal to me. I adore how dense and thick the arrangements are, instruments pile atop instruments atop instruments, yet it never really feels overcooked or distractingly busy. The band's weakness here lies in their actual songwriting. I've always appreciated Pecknold's talent for hooks, even if they may be a little bit daft on their self-titled or Helplessness Blues. He forgoes that here, and in losing that his songwriting really meanders and tends to go absolutely nowhere. This leads to what amounts to nothing more than white noise taking up a decent bit of this album. Some songs escape unscathed, like the single "Third of May / Ōdaigahara" and the lovely "Fool's Errand", but these issues make me like this a lot less than I want to.

>Nathan Bowles - Whole & Cloven
There's a really distinct sound from the first track, behind the banjo, that I can't quite place. The second track dabbles in piano minimalism, a really stark contrast to the earthiness of the first-- it seems to assert the subtly more refined atmosphere that some of the later compositions have. Overall, a nice showing of American Primitivism's versatility.
7

>Sinoia Caves - The Enchanter Persuaded
If outer space were made up of endless forests, this would be its soundtrack. First track is elusive, fifth track is gorgeous. The jangley dream pop in between the two works for me.
7

>Autechre - Amber
Some of Autechre's most hypnotic workings. Of course it's repetitive, but this album manages to never be tiring.
7

>Andrew Belfi - Natura Morta
Dark Drones, with metallic scrapes and shady drums taking a large presence. Not something you could leave in the background, given the activity of some of songs, strong atmosphere.
7

>PanAmerican - PanAmerican
they've gotta be doing SOMETHING right if they can make Post rock dub sound perfect for day OR night
7

>V/A - Orange Milk Compilation
Big mixed bag of post-post-music. A bit too big for me to recommend as a good starting place for someone looking into Orange Milk, but I guess you could pick through it to hone in on artists of interest.

Berlin School mixed with techno house. The 3 longest tracks are most heavily Prog electronic; the album as a whole is pristinely produced.

>Hartley C. White - This is Not What You Expect

"Hartley C. White is a contemporary musician. Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, he's lived in Corona, Queens since the 1980s. A student of martial arts since 1966, Hartley is the progenitor of a style he calls Who-pa-zoo-tic Music, "a non-classical music" based on the "broken rhythm" of Bruce Lee's jeet kune do."

One of the most interesting records I've heard in a while. Really odd jerky rhythmic pop -- that doesnt feel overly quirky like zolo or dissonant and unnerving like skronk. The instrumentation varies from cheap sounding keyboards to fuzzy rock to jazzy instrumental or simply looped voices but always occupies a weird jerky rhythm tied together by his voice. Hartley sing-talks lyrics that are sometimes political or self referencial to music as a culture and lifestyle as a musician.

3.5/5
>恗悅~ćµć‚‹ć¾ć~恘悅 - 1話ē›®

Super quirky visual-kei music. Extreme childlike fun synth poppy tracks but with really awesome vocal interplay and harmonies. Each singers voice sounds like a character in a childrens cartoon of like weird animated frogs and fairies and stuff.

3.5/5

>Doomsday Student - A Jumper's Handbook

This band is basically Arab on Radar but with one member changed and the music is more or less in the same style. Cool heavy dissonant no-wavey riffs. Rhythmic pulses of guitars building up and crashing in short pulsing manners. I saw them live recently and it was awesome. However not something that translate as well on record and this release in particular doesnt feel special within their 20 years of releasing music.

This was a lot less abrasive than I expected; I can definitely see the appeal. Personally I'm torn over whether I think the repetition makes it sounds hypnotic or simply boring. At the very least, I'm sure this would've sounded incredible if you were there at the time.

This is definitely interesting, but I don't know if I'd go any further than that. Also pro tip TVU&N might seem a bit dull at first, but it's a grower for sure. At least that was my experience

Pinback - Blue Screen Life (2001)
>indie rock

Laid back, mathy indie rock. First half is pretty much all rock-solid, but it takes a decent bit of a dive in the second half. Pinback doesn't exactly have the most memorable sound or songwriting chops, the guitar parts are all great but every track tends to blend together into a homogenous blur of indie rock.

2.5+

Clarence Clarity - No Now (2015)
>glitch pop, alternative R&B

Very intriguing but I feel like this guy's talents are wasted on this style of R&B. The bombastic, wall-of-sound electronic interludes end up as the album's best moments, wonderfully composed with an interesting, wholly unique sound. When it strays into pop, the quality dips. It grates, mostly, even if the interesting ideas of the interludes are carried over. Clarity is an irritating singer, making the R&B worthless, and the pop generally tends to suffer from limp melodies and a lack of focus. So much potential, but the execution leaves quite a bit to be desired.

2.0+

Above the Law - Livin' Like Hustlers (1990)
>west coast hip hop, gangsta rap

Gangsta rap in the vein of Public Enemy and N.W.A., and I might actually prefer it to both. The production can lose it's luster towards the end of the album (even though "Murder Rap" has one of my new favorite beats), luckily enough the rapping stays consistently wonderful all the way through.

3.0+

Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall 1971 (2007)
>singer/songwriter, contemporary folk

Posssibly my new favorite release of Young's. The intimacy of this performance is astounding, especially in the renditions of songs from the overproduced Harvest. Every song is performed with an insane amount of passion, both in the typically reedy vocals and in the absolutely wonderful guitar work. I'm not a huge fan of the piano pieces (Young's talent lies on the guitar), and the audience isn't the best, otherwise this is a great document of Young's best work.

Mount Eerie - Dawn: Winter Journal (2008)
>indie folk, singer/songwriter

Elverum's work under the Mount Eerie name might not reach the same sonic levels as his stuff as The Microphones, but I'll be damned if anyone out there makes straight-up indie folk as emotionally potent as him. Like Lost Wisdom, this is a collection of some of the most sparse, bare indie folk on the planet. Elverum songwriting style is simple and confessional, most songs sound the same but this adds to the idea that Elverum's just singing stream-of-consciousness with a single guitar. It wears thin over 40 minutes (Lost Wisdom performing much better at a spare 24 minutes), but not thin enough to be anything other than lovely.

3.0-

Larry Young - Into Somethin' (1965)
>soul jazz

Muzak-y jazz by an artist that can do much better. The organ here is great, but the compositions are so bland and little more than slightly pleasant. Nothing about this really moved me in anyway, which is especially bad given this lovely line-up. I'll check Unity out, I bet I'll be much more impressed.

She Her Her Hers - stereochrome (2014)
>indie rock, alternative rock, shoegaze
This is probably my favorite take on shoegaze in a while. Generally the issue that I have with shoegaze is that it explores some very interesting guitar textures, then proceeds to go nowhere with it. I do kind of realize that for some people it's the point, but it's kind of wasted potential, personally. This album, on the other hand, isn't anchored in shoegaze, but ratehr uses it liberally as part of the songs to add texture and fill out what would be a slightly empty sound, and when the shoegaze-esque moments kick in or fade out, you can very much feel the song change in dynamics, creating an almost Pixies-like style. It's honestly quite nice, I really enjoyed this one.
