So I was thinking maybe we could make a new glam chart since the old one wasn't quite satisfactory.
I think it's better to divide it into several categories, like top tier/2nd tier classics/other recommendations. Or even better, divide it like here: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/TheGreatDuck/the_subgenres_of_hair_glam_metal/
I think Bon Jovi and GNR could be put there too

i agree, an ultimate glam metal chart with different glam subgenres would be great
>>
>>74170532
OK, I think first thing, one needs to divide Dokken-style stuff with pop vocals like Europe and TNT from heavier acts like Motley Crue and rock'n'roll like Hanoi Rocks and Poison.
Also, do we stay with only glam or add hair metal? Do Bon Jovi/Quiet Riot/GNR even fit in?
>>
>>74168513

>Also, do we stay with only glam or add hair metal? Do Bon Jovi/Quiet Riot/GNR even fit in?
Glam metal and hair metal are the same genre
And yes, Bon Jovi, Quiet Riot and GnR are glam (each one fits in a different glam subgenre)
>>
Is this anon right?
>>74170764
>>
>>74170812
Well I mean if one is being scrupulous, some of these bands only had the hair, no lipstick, over-sexualized image or crossdressing. On the other hand, bands like Poison, Cinderella and Hanoi Rocks were all about that
>>
>>74168513
I would prefer they didn't.
>>
>>74170818
Yes. The problem with politics is that it always derails the thread from its topic, until it's all about politics and nothing else. Same thing with porn, look at /b/. It has to be contained somewhere, otherwise it contaminates everything it touches

No, he just really mentions nothing special. All the stuff from Morbid Angel to King Diamond is very well known. 9 out of 10 albums he mentions are on the basic checklist for every metal fan. It tells nothing about what makes his music special.
It's a shame because sometimes these lists can be really insightful. For example, reading Kurt Cobain's list of favorite albums was quite revealing to me, I could see how he composed he sound from many small influences

Also, you don't listen to THAT album as somebody with a "passing interest" in metal. Maybe the people you hung around with seemed to be like that, but that Gorguts album was out of the ordinary at the time.

Somebody with a passing interest in metal would listen to God Hates Us All by Slayer.

>Later on, Lemay actually reached out to Steven Wilson, only to discover that Wilson was just as much a fan of Gorguts’ work.

>“I was really flattered,” says Luc. “Just to have an email from him, you know? I was lucky enough to meet him in Montreal, and we spent some time together, just talking music. That was very memorable for me. It totally made my day.”

>In fact, it turns out Wilson was introduced to Gorguts’ Obscura album by his pal, Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt.

>“I met Mikael a few years ago at Heavy MTL and I brought him a copy of From Wisdom to Hate and he said, ‘No, no…you can keep it. I have it at home already.’ I feel really lucky that he took a minute out of his day to listen to a riff I wrote.”

>Lemay’s love of Porcupine Tree and Opeth is so intense, he wanted Wilson to produce Colored Sands, but Steven was too busy for the gig, unfortunately. That would’ve been fucking cool as shit.
>>
>>74176719
you're right

>Who are your musical influences?

>M: “Everything from Morbid angel via Whitesnake to Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake to Miles Davis. I've got a wide taste in music and will listen to anything good. There are genres I don't like at all like techno, hip hop, nu metal, power metal, emo metal etc...there's a lot of crap out there, so nowadays it's not often that I find a new band that I really like. Recently I've gotten into Today is the Day, Mastodon and Gorguts which are all great. Gorguts been around forever but I've never heard any of their albums til recently. They're not going anymore as I heard the singer or somebody from the band died. I'm an avid collector of obscure vinyl from the 60´s and 70´s as well as metal vinyl originals. I've got about 3 maybe 4000 vinyl, and a lot of stuff from my collection is absolutely fantastic. Bands that no one knows about...mainly progressive rock, krautrock and psychadelia. I like tripped out stuff you know.”

So yeah, Åkermeme introduced Prog Man to Gorguts and he himself was influenced by Gorguts shortly after writing Deliverance, which greatly explains Opeth's drop in quality

It's good for what it is. IMO Judas Priest's strength was that they could evolve and change with the times. Especially in a burgeoning world of '80s metal.
But still it's just them trying to catch up with the rest of metal. It's them doing an impression of 1990 metal sound. A good one, but an impression nonetheless.

True Satanic Black Metal are bands such as Darkthrone, Arya Satankampf, Graveland, Gestapo 666, Satanic Warmaster, Beherit and Impaled Nazarene. You can listen to Metallica if you want, but you do not understand the true Hitleric Nazi black metal thing. You just poser and you can fuck off the whole scene. Black Metal is real music, not intended for animals like you, but the real Satanic Misantrophics who do not care like you clown from. Black Metal is an elite music, and you do not understand it. None of you understand the real Satanism. You ridiculous little kids. World view is based on hitlerism, on a personal level Satanic individualism, collective level hitleric fascism. Without a theoretical understanding of the occult, it is useless to dream of understanding wotanic worldview. None of you can not understand Wotanism, because you are all intellectually at the same level as the earthworms. You can not reach an elite level of Satanism, so why even dream about it. Satanism and Black Metal are the elite. For real misantrophes.

Why are deathmetalfags so gay about melody? It's such a nu-male concept and is essentially introducing pop elements to an otherwise abrasive and dissonant sound that should be the real focus of extreme music. I guess it is a way to legitimize metal as an artform by linking it to homos like Mozart, but let it be known that shit like death metal and black metal is not and cannot be more brutal and intense than hardcore/metalcore/grindcore, etc.

But hardcore on its own isn't more visceral than more extreme forms of metal. It's own straightforwardness that's normally the reason why it's able to be so energetic actually helps it feel less energetic in this case. Sure that first time you'll hear a chuggy hardcore breakdown people go far harder for it than perhaps anything in music period, but then they get used to that sound, and there's nothing but disappointment after that. Hardcore's subgenres are capable of having more hard hitting/brutal sounding moments than metal, but only when it takes influence from metal (metalcore and grindcore) to spice things up, and even then it's only in breakdown sections nowhere else.

Meanwhile, metal (at least the good kind, not melodic death) maintains that its riffs are melodies, but not just melody alone. They have a heavy, harmonic aspect to them, too. Now provided that the heavy/harmonic aspect remains, the melodic aspect allows it to create a very erratic forward moving progression that hardcore just can't do. Whereas the hardcore rollercoaster goes very fast and straight with drops occasionally, metal's rollercoaster goes all over the place plus has drops as well.

This is why I'll always prefer metal to hardcore personally, and even the hardcore stuff I do like it's often within subgenres influenced by metal (eg. Integrity, Acme, Starkweather, Converge, Iron Lung, Nails, etc.) because hardcore just becomes too vanilla to feel intense at some point.
>>
>>74179067
whoa nigga you expect me to read all that by you
>>
>>74179513
TL;DR: Hardcore's vanillaness stops it from being more intense while metal's "melodic" element allows it be more intense. Hardcore can only match/surpass metal when it's metal influenced.
