I didn't even know post metal was a thing. If 5 seconds of looking into it says anything, it's literally shoegaze + post rock + metal. I don't know if it would even be considered post metal without using effects to make it sound like shoegaze.

Could just replace reverb/effects with gain, but then you just have metal. Could get rid of crescendos but then you just have shoegaze with metal phrasing. Seems really constrained and specific.

If you think they're using those tools as a crutch (in place of good songwriting), make it yourself.

A label is going to take more of your money than they'll earn for you. That's the entire business model. Maybe that made sense pre-2000-2010, but nowadays you can do all of that yourself or just hire a few specific people. We had maybe 10 people see my old band play at one festival, I stayed to sell merchandise and made more than we'd ever make at a show, nobody else in the band bothered with it so I raked in 100% of the profit.
Labels will only half-ass advertise you anyway. Doing giveaways and spamming instagram is far superior.

I don't know if this would be considered atmospheric sludge metal, but I love everything about this album. I love the dynamics, the clean and heavy guitar tones (although I would have loved the clean tone better if it were just clean with no effects at all), and I love the music for being melancholy but still having a bit of hope in it.

And it was this that more or less disillusioned me with a lot of post-metal.
