The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Just found some hot reviews I hadn't posted yet

Also considering posting some reviews of the D.L.I.M.C. cassingles because I've been listening to those non-stop for like a month now, but I'm not liking how those reviews turned out. Instead I'm trying to transcribe all the lyrics, which is really difficult. Anyway

Dedekind Cut - $uccessor (2016)
>Ambient, Industrial
Ok that was kind of cool I guess? I'm probably not going to relisten ever. Not sure what all the hype is about. Maybe decades from now when Dean Blunt was the most important artist of the 2010s, I'll look like an idiot for not revelling in this kind of generic post-internet, pseudo-ambient bullshit.

DJ Screw - The Legend

If you want a sense of this guy's style and accomplishments, this is a hell of a comp. It's almost 3 hours long and as a result it feels overdone - but there's some definite jams in the mix. There's at least three or four tracks that could easily be cut, notably the interviews and extended shoutouts (why the fuck is one 13 minutes??) but it's kind of endearing to hear Houston rappers come together and sing their praise. Plus it has a bomb cover.

4/5

Lil Flip - The Leprechaun

Flip apparently became a big name within the SUC at a really young age for his freestyling skills. At only 18 he came out with this debut which is -- 100 fucking minutes long. He spends most of the album bragging about his status as the "freestyle king" but it's apparent that he can't make a studio song for shit. Every third song is a total dud and the solid tracks are easily outshone by a number of Houston releases out there. This is 90s hip-hop excess at its peak. I got about an hour into this and realized I had 12 tracks left. And by the time I got to "Candycars" which features literally more than a guest a minute, I actually shut it off.

Could have been something decent but it's so cram packed with filler and tropes that only a fraction of his talent shines through.

A couple of fun tracks though.

yeah sorry, had a sneaking suspicion. don't think I've posted this one yet tho:

Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me (2017)
>Singer/Songwriter, Contemporary Folk
At times vaguely genuinely heartstring-tugging, but generally ham-fisted—I feel like Phil is better than this. The lyrics just don't really connect—combined with the music, in my opinion, they don't convey emotion all that well, least of all loss and sadness, especially compared to his previous material. This is virtually incomparable to the dark mystery and pure emotional drainage of 03's "Mount Eerie," ...in my mind a more engaging portrait of death. In fact, I'd go as far as to say the two offer very conflicting portraits of death. I don't just feel like, I know Phil is better than this.

If this music is to help himself in his recovery, then that's fine, but why make a weak popular music-oriented effort of it if he really didn't have anything emminently important to say? And why do I have to feel sad if he's hardly trying to make me feel sad? And why is he touring? While I'm not entirely comfortable bringing someone's artistic integrity into question, to be fair, Phil invited it with the meta-commentary at the beginning of the album, and further begged the question with the subsequent collection of lackluster songs running through the motions of repeating the same few lyrics, melodies, and motifs.

And this may be a particularly insensitive thing to say, possibly totally missing the point... but Phil could've just recorded and released a chair creaking for an hour, skipped this whole touring business, and retreated into his home to never be seen again--and he would've gotten similar feedback from fans and critics. And if he's releasing this then he's obviously looking for some response? Not sure where I'm going with this particular train of thought, but it's worth discussing I guess...

Lame-ish music and guilted critics abound.

JAY-Z - 4:44 (2017)
>east coast hip hop

Considering that I'm not even that big on The Blueprint, I'm /really/ not feeling this. No I.D.'s production is okay, certainily the highlight of the album even though it's obvious that he's phoning it in. His beats have no power to them whatsoever, they float around in the background and sometimes intrigue with a cool sample or two, yet they never stick out the way his beats stick out on albums like MBDTF or Summertime '06. Compared to Jay's performance, however, they're the best beats ever put to record. I don't even like Jay's rapping on what's considered his best work, so his lazy, half-assed performance here is probably one of the worst lead performances I've ever heard on a hip hop album. Some people surmise that he's trying out the monotone style that's popular today with rappers like Earl Sweatshirt and Vince Staples, I say that he's just bored out of his mind trying to be even remotely cool or hardcore twenty years past his prime. The braggadocio lyrics are awful as well, he manages to make a diss track against Kanye paint him as an absolute, total cunt more than anything else, and he certainly doesn't have a goddamn thing to say about class given his status. There's so much good conscious hip hop out there, avoid the album made by a past his prime rich dude.

lotsa bad opinions incoming

Winners' Bracket:
Mark+ - Steve Reich - Different Trains; Electric Counterpoint
Wasn't a huge fan of 'Different Trains' overall, although the chaotic 2nd movement was neat, as was the medley portion of movement 3. I'm a bit warmer towards 'Electric Counterpoint,' but it's ultimately boring compared to the other stuff from Reich or other minimalist composers I've heard.
3.5

Accel - Cleaners From Venus - Midnight Cleaners

nyarlathotep - anco - prospect hummer

Alternates between "I want to be Daniel Lopatin" and "I want to be Panda Bear and/or Avery Tare." Neither idea is particularly appealing. Typical thin, reverby bedroom production.

Losers' Bracket (only part of the liturgy review):

Transgod aka xXL1TURGYF4NXx (also participating against his will) - Liturgy - The Ark Work
The 'industrial doot doot speed/prog metal' angle of this album was done better by Shining, and the 'anthemic lots of instruments rock' one was done better by any number of post-rock (or post-metal, or crescendocore) bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Many of the songs on this record are set at slower paces than on 'Aesthethica' which hinders both the effectiveness of Hendrix's so called burst beat and generally the tremolo picked black metal playing style.
The production on this album is straight terrible. Presumably in an attempt to make his album sound 'industrial' like that of, for instance, Nine Inch Nails, Hendrix destroyed the album's eq and created an undynamic and boring approach to his 'transcendental' black metal. There is also at least one chopped up and looped section on every song. He didn't even produce the album, how the hell is a professional this awful? Sounds like it's coming through a tin can; I've heard Striborg albums with better production.
Hendrix's vocals take a departure from his hybrid of screamo and shrieked ones on 'Aesthethica,' instead choosing to lazily deliver his lyrics only vaguely on pitch.
His choice in using synthesizers is... interesting. Despite being bandmates with an exceptionally talented drummer, he uses a four-on-the-floor drum machine beat (which doesn't mesh with the overall sound of the song) for a good half of lead single 'Quetzalcoatl.' Besides that the MIDI brass is laughable in almost every instance.
The synth work in general is only slightly less kitschy than Burzum's 'Daudi Baldrs.'
The ten minute centerpiece of the album, 'Reign Array' features bagpipes. There's not much I can say other than they don't fit.

Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning (1975)
>rock in opposition

On "Living in the Heart of the Beast", this album's centerpiece, prog's most noted rule-breakers hone it in and create a shockingly cohesive, conventional prog track that absolutely /rips/. It takes a large amount of influence from the canterbury scene and jazz fusion, filled with blistering guitar solos and just generally fun, technically incredible guitar work. The rest of the tracks here are more typical HC fair, nice, satirical prog-based soundscaping, although Slapp Happy's influence is incredibly notable here. Sometimes that band's less serious, more humorous sound doesn't work well, sometimes it makes for something unique and wholly original. Whatever the case is, this is a very interesting album.

3.0

Swans - The Seer (2012)
>experimental rock, post-rock

The long tracks are incredible, meditative pieces of heavy post-rock, the shorter tracks are really over-bearing and often kinda corny. "Lunacy", the album's finest track, is the only shorter track that truly leaves a good impression, save for the underrated noise freakouts of "93 Ave. B Blues". The country-influenced tracks clash horribly with the post-rock, and their pretty overdone on their own. Karen O turns in a great performance on "Song for a Warrior", but the rest of the track is filled with super affected twang. I really can't heap enough praise on the super-long tracks, however. That's what modern Swans does well and they damn near perfect it here.

cont.
'Vitriol' is a combination of Californian Chant (I honestly prefer his chanting shit to his and every other black metal musicians attempts at making compelling midi music) and Hip-Hop (of the "Industrial" variety).
My favorite songs on this album were 'Follow' and 'Follow II.'
I think Hendrix has some legitimately great ideas, but he needs to get his shit together and make music that's within his means.
3.0+ for how unique it is I guess

AnBro - Residents - God In Three Persons
I'm not very big on The Residents, and this album does little to make me want to listen to their discography past a few select albums. This is probably one of the worst things under the moniker of 'experimental' I've ever heard. I would have enjoyed Burzum's 'Daudi Baldrs' overlayed with his inane rants on paganism more than this.
1.5+

Trianglecubed - Robbie Basho - Visions Of The Country
Pretty good. Enjoyed 'Rocky Mountain Raga' a whole lot.
3.5-

Blapp (participating against his will) - Steve Roach - Structures From Silence
Surprisingly not dated. Pretty good.
3.5+

Benji - Aqsak Maboul - Un peu de l'âme des bandits
Wasn't a huge fan of the post punk sounding parts, the rest was pretty good.
3.5+

s - urfaust - Ritual Music for the True Clochard
Nice riffs. More experimental parts were eh as is the vocalist.
3.0+

Borzoi - Noir Désir - Des Visages Des Figures
>listens to radiohead once
But yeah this is pretty good. The last track I didn't enjoy (well, I enjoyed the more instrumentally focused parts, but there were stretches of quiet parts with lots of speaking) that much, seems like I need to know french to get that one as it seems more lyrically focused.
3.5

Jimbo Jazzy Jeff (assumedly) - Autechre - Oversteps
Pretty enjoyable bleep bloops.

mixtape tourney update

*** "nobody replied last time I posted this" edition ***

psot-feelist came through with a killer mix of lo-fi indie that includes bugskull, hood, luxurious bags, supreme dicks. I didn't like the opening song, but it really efficiently set the tone for the rest of the tape. great work feelsy!!

for the 4 of you that made it to round 2, here are your restrictions:
your mix must be under 1 hour
must have an oil painting from this century as the album art
must fit one of these themes (more than one person may pick the same theme, don't worry)
- high-energy/party
- love songs (happy and sad, not just one)
- only introductions, interludes, and/or outros
- free-folk/new weird america/freak folk/avant-folk

this one i will actually finished because my internet problems seem to have completely cleared up for now

because of my limitations with having no computer to edit images and all, i will have to use online services to generate a tourney chart. this one only seems to go to eight players before it starts making a chart with no sense, so i will do two of pic related and have the end winners of each one go against each other in a final battle for dominance over the /daily/ world.

French chart done \o/

>Camille • Ouï
3.5
Really really insteresting Art Pop (sometimes Camille fails and it's a cringefest).

>Fishback • À ta merci
3.0
Indie French Rock with a large half tacky AF ('member those 1980's Chanson/New-Wave pop hits only +50 mums genuinely like?!). GPOTM: Guilty Pleasure Of The Month

>Halo Maud • Du Pouvoir EP
3.0
Promising Synth/Dream Pop EP: nice title track and 2 mediocre B-sides.

>Laure Briard • Sorcellerie EP
3.0
Like Stereolab but more Dream Pop.

>Clara Luciani • Monstre d’amour EP
3.5
(ex-La Femme, ex-Nouvelle Vague) Each track has a different style (eg. Synth Pop/Rock, Wall of Sound, Yéyé) backing up well-written lyrics. Françoise Hardy meets Catherine Ribeiro.

>Train Fantôme • Manémeur
4.5
Dreamy Lo-fi Folk (basically Dungeon Synth on guitars) with cold, droning synths. I wasn't ready for _that_…
https://abrecords.bandcamp.com/album/man-meur

>Maud Octallinn • En terrain tendre
3.0
Grating high-pitched voice but that's the only big flaw; otherwise, lot of effort spent to create different original ambiances.

>Jil Caplan • Imparfaite
2.5
Tasteful jazzy/swing background + tedious songs vaguely crooned by Jil Caplan featuring Benjamin Biolay & Thomas Dutronc. Coralie Clément mastered this genre a decde ago…

>Kumisolo • Kabuki femme fatale
4.0
Cute, catchy Neo-Yéyé with inventive arrangements and funny exotic touches. (ex-Konki Duet).

4.5
1970's French Pop revival (eg. Véronique Sanson).

This surprised me. Zero nonsense whatsoever. Listen to the bonus tracks if you hear it too.

>George Harrison - Wonderwall Music (1968)

This is totally solid and I'm not sure why people would rate this poorly. I mean, I do know, because it's a 1968 Beatles off-shoot, and people have their own preconceived notions about how it should sound. I'm not the first to say how painful it is that George Harrison only rarely had the opportunity to carry out his ideas on The Beatles' records, because he has a uniquely spiritual and deeply humble voice next to Lennon and McCartney.

That being said, this is quite different than the solo work he would be known for. The constant is his ability to wring out some deceptively complex melodies and chord progressions and make them come across simply and radio-friendly--"Red Lady Too" immediately comes to mind. Here it's 1968 and he's fully immersed in his Indian phase, so it's about 50/50 split between Hindustani Classical compositions played by an entire orchestra of competent musicians, and instrumentals--nearly all without vocals--that are closer to the pop/folk/country-hybrid sound The Beatles would edge toward. He does an excellent job bridging the gap between these very disparate genres, somehow making it sound like a cohesive whole, not unlike the scores of Alejandro Jodorowski's films, with whom would have some connection in the following years.

Paging Animal Brollective

http://diymag.com/2017/07/21/everything-everything-new-track-a-fever-dream-listen

New track, liking the way this sounds a lot more. This sounds like it could have come from Arc, lot's of the anger of Get to Heaven isn't present. Don't like the lack of diverse lyrics, but I'm hoping it's because these are singles.

Don't get me hyped like that motherfucker
>lyrics repetitive af again
You can pull it off if done in the right way (which Can't Do definitely couldn't), but this one has a better instrumental. And I don't see the Arc similarities, it sounds a lot more like GtH because of the prominent synths.

thicc indie rock

>And I don't see the Arc similarities
nigga he plays a fuckin piano and this whole song is in a minor key how can you not associate it with Arc's somber atmosphere
you're right about the synths being used a lot. It'd be cool if this album had tracks from both GtH and Arc, but I doubt it

Don't you dare shittalk No Reptiles it has two sets of lyrics before going into loop and it's a great line the one in the final part.

And idk, "pianos in minor key" wasn't the main feature of Arc for me.
