I promise this one will bump

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Larks' Tongues is half improv stuff and half hard rock/metal, more experimental I guess. Red is pretty much proto prog metal with an improv interlude (and one of the best songs of all time with Starless).
Discipline is math rock/new wave with a completely different lineup besides Bruford and Fripp, like Talking Heads style new wave but more technical.
>>
So apparently there's a new GYBE album that's coming out this year.

>>73900162
Red is worth a shot.

>>73900076
Oh yeah Rock Bottom too, since it's perfect :^)

Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972 (2011)
>ambient, drone

"The Piano Drop" is one of the most stunning pieces of ambient music I've ever heard. Hecker has always had a penchant for really innovative, enveloping sound design (every album of his falls perfectly under the "headphone album" descriptor), but that track takes the cake, it's an absolutely stunning, radically inventive piece. The rest of the album is really solid, especially the closing "In the Air" trilogy, yet the opener always stands as the best, most engrossing track. Rather normal ambient takes up the rest of the album's runtime, and while it's very good, considering who's performing it, it makes me clamor for something riskier.

3.0-

Vektor - Outer Isolation (2011)
>technical thrash metal

Here's all the evidence I need that Vektor is the most consistent band of the past decade. Not quite as raw as Black Future, not as progressive as Terminal Redux, it's kind of the red-headed stepchild in the context of Vektor's discography, but it takes that awkward position with grace. The riffs are always killer, and the vocals are exceptionally good here, some of the screams are bone-rattling in the absolute best way. It has a level of saminess that isn't present on Black Future or Terminal Redux, and it's just generally their least inventive, but a really good album in its own right.

3.0-

RJD2 - Deadringer (2002)
>instrumental hip hop

Cool beats, cool sampling, doesn't really do much of anything. Every track blends together, and I suppose that's to match the cohesive nature of a beat tape/DJ mix, but RJD2's already chill, nonobtrusive sound really tends to drag in this format. There are some really cool tracks here ("Ghostwriter" in particular, making great use of an Elliott Smith song), but as an album it drags like crazy.

(2/2)

The Red Crayola with The Familiar Ugly - The Parable of Arable Land (1967)
>experimental rock, psychedelic rock, free improvisation

The "Free Form Freak-Out" tracks are all really cool, inventive slabs of improvisation, the psych tracks do absolutely nothing. Production-wise, this is generally very thin, which serves better to more instrumentally dense tracks compared to tracks where you pay attention to the guitar line or the drums, and the psych tracks just generally aren't anything special to begin with. Worth a listen really for the freak outs, which are both incredibly enjoyable and incredibly prophetic.

you will probably like Virgins if you haven't heard it already. I always felt like Ravedeath was kind of safe, as you articulated. Never as good as Harmony in Ultraviolet. But Virgins I feel like is much more raw and aggressive, keeping the enveloping soundscapes but injecting a lot of emotion

Part of me is shocked that you gave the Blueprint a 2 but I totally should've guessed. "Heart of the City" is one of my all time favorite beats though man, shit is killer. Which reminds me, I should try a "favorite beats" list or something.

Also that Vektor album really blew me away and I was noooot expecting it! I really need to hear Terminal Redux now cause I heard it's even better.

Wherein comet dishonors your recs with his bad onions:

Boredoms: first track is a great post rock sprawl, equally reminding me of Long Season and La Novia with nice spacelady vocalizationing. Second one not quite dynamic enough for its length, would be nice at 7 or 8 min, stilll pleasant tho

Mothers: having already heard WOIIFTM, this feels samey even if it came first. I guess my threshold for being Wow'd by this is 1 album. Still lots of good stuff that I'm sure will grow on me with more listens.

Smile: album proper is nice but a bit of an incohesive mess I'm afraid, but the bonus materials are fascinating and very enjoyable, the kind of thing I'd like for all my favorite albums. A peek inside. Album proper didn't live up to the hype (could it possibly?) by even trying to correct for that, a little flat.

Alina: classical is so drastically not in my wheelhouse that I maybe should have asked for a different rec. this was very elegant and beautiful but not something I actively enjoy or would revisit. My failing, not its.

Kanye: skits 0.5, a few songs 1.0, other songs 4.5. Very mixed bag but some here (we don't care, family business) hit me good and will be spun all summer.

Fishmans: it's good

Good-evening /daily/ how have your days been. Tried the following;

>Paraf - Izleti. Love the dark use of synthesizers on this album which add to the overall mood, the vocals also have a nice range swinging between loud and soft. Tužne uši is an especially good track though props to it all as a whole.
>Sarlo Akrobata - Bistriji ili tuplji čovek biva kad. Reminds me in a sense of Public Images "First Issue" though listenable and with multiple vocalists, the tracks were generally hit and miss, that being said it did have decent flow.
>Stereolab - Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements. Someone recommended that I listen to this whilst on holiday which I couldn't get around to. This sounds absolutely nothing like what I was expecting. Thought it was going to be NEU! spliced with Burial, instead it is essentially 90's TVU. I'm Going Out Of My Way sounds like Sister Ray and a lot of the album thus far is very reminiscent of White Light with a motorik beat stuck in there. Quite liking this so far, the vocals are basically like every shoegaze group ever.

Love Songs For The Deaf by the way, even if I'm not big on skits.

should i tell them that there are some people in the world who are just actually happy?
people trying to see PC music as anything more than a group of friends making pop music that sounds like it's from the near future piss me off to no end.
>>
>>73911750
it's music that blends old and new fast paced sounds into something fresh.
>>
>>73911834
I disagree that it's something fresh, it is a blend, but one that to my ears works bad. also, the music didn't sound very happy to me. I love me some happy bleeps, but at least to me the positive vibes weren't really there most of the time.
>>
>>73911812
also the fact that he complains about the obviously photoshopped album cover is fuckin hilarious
It can't be that an artist who is one half of a graphic designer duo would do that intentionally

>>73911893
for real though. hannah was originally a model that a.g. cook just liked to talk to.
i feel like a lot of the "ironic camp" that people cite in regards to a lot of aspects of pc music, mostly visual, come from genuine nostalgia for the days of really shitty cgi populating messageboards. cook has cited nightcore as a direct influence on his work.

Ok, Comet. Here are some picks I recommend after looking through stuff you like. You're bound to like some of these. Let me know if you've already heard any.

Country Joe & The Fish - Electric Music for the Mind and Body
Earthless - Rhythms From a Cosmic Sky
Michael Chapman - Fully Qualified Survivor
Philip Glass - Glassworks
Relatively Clean Rivers - s/t
Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
Batsumi - s/t
Gong - You
Big Brother & The Holding Company - Cheap Thrills
Steve Gunn - Way Out Weather

Setsuko - Live Life | Die Happy

another ep from one of our own. recorded with one condenser mic live but he's just a wee demo. songs are very short and very grind, a big plus in my book. three minutes of chaos, i think i hear some napalm death influence? some kind of hardcore punk undertones for sure, but not in a bad way at all (i very rarely like hxc punk as a whole). the songs progress well, as if the guitarists have some idea of building and releasing tension (which is something i can't say for 95% of metal). if it had more sweep picking i would swear it was an early tony danza demo (again, in a good way. i love those guyise). quality is shit but i'm looking forward to hearing the full album. if you like the more rambunctious side of metal and don't mind early black metal tape recorder under a couch quality def check it out, otherwise wait until the full release (if i disappear and it drops someone pls come on skype and let me know). during certain parts of rat swarm the drums sound out of tune, i'm not sure if it's the toms or the snare or what but try to catch that on the final recording. i'm stoked to hear the vocals better though, they sound really dry and sharp.
7/10 will still relisten even with shit quality

Infernal Coil - Burning Prayer of Infinite Hatred

i really don't like the first half of our punishment, before the slow. his screams just sound half-assed and the guitar sounds a tad generic. other than that this album sounds like i'm inside of a storm cloud in the middle of a fucking hurricane, the transitions are a bit predictable but the timbres almost make up for it. i feel touches of black metal, which is usually a good thing but i don't think the guitar timbre really suits tremelo barr chords. it's mostly on the last track.
6/10 would be higher if it were just the first two songs

>using a DAW
>not recording to tape

just kidding its different practices that all have their ups and downs. theres no good or bad DAW really there are some that are maybe more for beginners or amateurs and some that are more complicated but that doesnt mean ones wrong. utilizing the unique characteristics of any one you choose is what makes you an interesting musician. what are you trying to do? record stuff and just edit and mix? arrange samples and recordings? use vst and plug ins and effects? write midi scores?

Chet Baker - Chet (1959)
>cool jazz

Whereas The Sidewinder is one of the most effortlessly cool jazz records, this seems incredibly forced and stiff. A lot of Baker's work comes off like that to me, calculatedly cool. Baker's trumpet playing is very yearning and lovely, but that's about the only thing this record has going for it, despite the incredibly talented line up. Sings is better, and I'm not even a fan of that record.

2.0+

Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions (2009)
>drone metal, drone

Sunn O)))'s attempt to nearly entirely remove themselves from the genre of metal they damn near perfected with Black One comes with somewhat mixed results. The duo's incorporations of liturgical elements on the two middle tracks is hokey and rather forced, and they just pair awkwardly with the monolithic drones. The straight-up drone metal is done very well, as always, but the band hits a new high with the jazz-influenced closer "Alice", channeling the sound and energy of its namesake while injecting her music with a totally new edge. Super inventive for the genre, but not without issue.

2.5+

caP'n Jazz - Analphabetapolothology (1998)
>midwest emo

Burritos... is one of the best emo records ever released, so the first twelve or so tracks are absolutely killer. This band's music is the perfect mix of youthful spontaneity and impressively technical musicianship—exactly what good emo music should do. Tim Kinsella's vocals are perfectly whiny and cracked, and the instrumental performances (especially Mike Kinsella, when you listen to American Football and Owen you forget how much that dude can tear it up on the kit) are insane. Outside of Burritos... the quality varies quite a bit. There are some awesome high points, like the "Take On Me" cover and the twee pop-influenced "Theme to "90210" and "Ooh Do I Love You", but there's also some weird novelty stuff and some not as great tracks from their EPs. All in all, absolutely worth a listen for any fan of the genre.

This album still gives me the creeps, but less so. I feel stupid for not noticing the lyrics ("Don't think about it too much"). I think I was attaching this EP far too close to the Alternative/Ambient R&B happenings, which really isn't where the entirety of this fits.

The Horace Silver Quintet - Song for My Father (1965)
>hard bop

I find myself hard-pressed to formulate original thoughts for many hard bop albums, so I'll give a variation of my normal spiel here. Silver's piano playing is among the most beautifully expressive I've ever heard in jazz, and Henderson's tenor sax isn't too far behind in quality. Silver's compositional style is mostly standard hard bop, but the general since of admiriation towards his father permeates every piece and gives it a wonderfully longing quality. Shocked I haven't heard of this until recently, it's awesome.

>Terron – Whities 003
Far better than the previous single. The first track is a great standalone, a nice techno track with killer synth line that progresses throughout, though it does seem a bit out of place on this EP. The remaining tracks really sets this EP apart though. They’re more restrained than the first track and flow into each other nicely. The last track has these great minimal wave-like synths that give the track a darker vibe.
3.5

>Minor Science – Whities 004
A decent single but nothing too fantastic. A couple of decent techno tracks with some interesting synths and sampling but it didn’t exactly hold my attention throughout. Closing Acts is a nice little track, stands out ahead of Glamour anyways.
2

>Reckonwrong – Whities 005
The most out-there release I’ve heard from this label so far and a very good one. Off-kilter house tracks with some incredible sampling ranging from harpsichords, to seagulls and crashing waves. An interesting EP overall.

i'd suggest looking at other post-punk revival bands but most of them suck, The National are one of the only bands that are really good at that sound imo and they're a bit more unique

Listen to their other albums if you haven't already, Trouble Will Find Me is one of their weaker ones

The guy who voted no has over 100,000. What le fuck (should still be weighted the same tho desu)

none of them (except maybe you, I can't be bothered to figure it out) have genre weighting
it's not a matter of how many votes you have, its whether you made the votes before the last weighting refresh
I think you can ask the mods to give you weighting or there might be a thread for it
