women and children first lmao

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Bobby Charles - Bobby Charles (1972)

This is an extremely satisfying album. I admire musicians that work hard at making their music sound easy, and the sound here is simple and repetitive but not dumb, easy but not amateurish. Members of The Band play on this album, and it strikes a nice balance between The Band, for example, or Little Feat in the roots rock realm and more singer-songwriter albums of the time from Randy Newman and the likes and incorporates only the best qualities of each. Make sure to play it loud because it's not a folk-/country-/beer-drinkin'-rock album that takes its arrangements for granted. Bobby Charles was a Louisianan and it shows from the get-go in what just may be the highlight, "Street People", an entirely grooving, bass-driven, backbeat tune. I can see myself coming back to this one a bit.
7.5/10

>Steppenwolf - The Second (1968)

I can't help it, I've been liking these early Steppenwolf albums quite a bit. They occupied the same cultural sphere as Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" for me in how impossible it was for most of my life to listen to "Born to Be Wild" or "Magic Carpet Ride" objectively and sincerely. Moreover, they're in the class of 60s psychedelia that made it to the mainstream (thanks to the popularity of features in the film Easy Rider) and thus, suffered some cultural neutering as a result--it was no longer for bikers and hippies and drug users.

The thing is, the debut stands up to scrutiny, and while there is some pop sensibility, it's as heavy and bluesy and acid-drenched as anything else at the time. This follow-up isn't much of a step down, only fewer knockout tracks. "Magic Carpet Ride" is still an awesome feel-good song that turns on a dime down this tunnel of intense confusion halfway through before reemerging again at the end. I just have to give it due credit for its widespread--there's something for just about everyone here.

what can I say I like onkyo
I think the meditative space that it puts you into is unlike stuff in other genres of music

for instance Feldman, the pitch content almost invalidates any sense of "peace" I would get from it
>>
>>73780457
Why does the exact same listening experience get better or worse depending on whether or not the piece was meant to be a soundtrack tho? Seems like silly business to me.
>>
>>73780480
because I think a soundtrack is supposed to at least somewhat
1. fit the story/dramatic content
2. simultaneously stand on its own as music and conjure up the drama of the original work

aki onda's features a lot of orchestral sort of music assumingly recorded from someone else playing it live in front of him so you get that sort of festival music feel with the other sounds of the crowds and such blending in with it, mixed in with some more classic sounding edited concrete/noise sections from other nature sources

I'm listening to it right now and they do sound similar, but Aki Onda has a rawer sound, (i guess thats why its called musique concrete) and it can be compared to tracks by Toshiya Tsunoda where he just sticks a recording device into a gutter and records whatever's passing by. Also thanks for the rec.

No, I don't think so. Figure this. If I were to utilise a preexisting piece of music as a soundtrack for a preexisting film in a way that didn't fit would that make the film without the soundtrack or the soundtrack without the film any worse? Would this scenario be any different if I was the author of both the music and the film? If so why? If not, doesn't this tell you that the artist's intentions regarding their work and their intended aura are irrelevant to the essence of the piece and thus separate components (in cases where they truly are separate as is the case with soundtracks released as standalone albums) should be judged on their own merits rather than on their place in a larger work?

No, but the film must be considered as a whole when you're evaluating it.
I know vidya's controversial but if you judged Battlefront on the Hoth map it's like a 8-10/10. but as a whole it's like a 5/10. while the independent part of it can be exceptional the sum experience is lacking

>brain sounds - an attempt to record coincidence
a room of people making random mouth sounds and hums and ooohs and aahs in lo fi. usually acapella stuff doesnt sit that well with me but i liked this one a good amount. you wouldnt expect these random voices to work so well and create so many nice sounds together. sometimes they sound like turkeys which is funny. really great cover art too!

Consider Meshes of the Afternoon by Maya Deren, originally created without sound. Screenings would either be completely silent or the curators of the cinema screening it would select a soundtrack they thought fit. Would you judge the film with a curated soundtrack like that as a whole or would you try to evaluate the film on its own? Would you then do the same when Deren had a soundtrack made specifically for the film?
Also keep in mind what we started talking about. This has very little to do with it.

>Jorge Ben - Forca Bruta
On paper is just a MPB album with nothing groundbreaking in terms of backing instrumentation for the year it was released, although it is quite nice. The essence of this album relies on its delivery, it so damn powerful, the first (and only?) record I heard Jorge Ben with such energy.
(lol why is this dailycore?)

>John Fahey - The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick
Four years ago I was still going through Fahey work cronologicaly, back then I never made it to this album and all the good things I heard about it kept haunting me all this time.
Now I feel different, relieved, and that's because it's such a joy to listen to Fahey playing live, one would think that what he did on record couldn't be improved but this goes against that.

oh fugg i killed the thread

Grimes - Visions (2012)
>synthpop, dream pop

The two singles ("Genesis" and "Oblivion") are very obviously the best tracks here, by a significant margin. Grimes' production skills are on full display here, managing a perfect blend between upbeat synthpop danceability and dreamy, hazy chillwave/dream pop. The rest is pleasant enough, but the haziness becomes a real downfall, turning relatively decent melodies into obscenely redundant snoozefests. I still prefer this overly hazy, sleepy style to the over-the-top hyper pop of Art Angels, but it sure makes for one hell of a boring album.

2.0+

King Crimson - Discipline (1981)
>progressive rock, art rock

Sorry Nyar, this rocks. It's ridiculously obvious how much this wants to be a Talking Heads record, but it elevates itself above and beyond being a plain rip-off. Belew's vocals are very much like Byrne's, and the weakest part of the record, but they have a lot of character, and the Heads-esque rhythms are given enough of a progressive edge to differentiate the album from the other band's work. The performances here are insane, Belew and Fripp are both wonderful on the guitar, Levin's chapman stick work gives the album it's unique sound, and Bruford turns in one of his best performances ever here, he's just wonderful. Can't beat Red or ITCOTCK, but it's great in it's own right.

Pinegrove - Cardinal (2016)
>indie rock

Unpretentious, rowdy, singalong indie rock, and sometimes that's just fine. Incredibly unoriginal, and I mean that in the most serious way possible. Everything brought to the table is something that's been done better on thousands of other records. The country, the emo, and the straight-up rock. It's all been done before, and more often than not it's been done better. It also never really reclaims the glory it achives on it's wondrous opener, but it's still a solid listen all the way through. Succeds where a lot of indie rock fails—it has soul.

2.5+

Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R (2000)
>stoner rock, alternative rock

This is shockingly inventive and weird, and sadly all that does is prove that QotSA are definitely best at straightforward, no bullshit stoner rock. Even the opener, with it's incredibly repetitive structure, is an absolute scorcher of a track, and that style is done even better on tracks like "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret" and "Better Living Through Chemistry". The tracks that go more outside this box, experimenting more with mellower art rock and even some more experimental elements, generally tend to fail. They're not awful, and Homme's guitar work is always a joy to listen to, but they're awkwardly executed and oddly tongue-in-cheek. A mostly fine listen, but Songs for the Deaf is a more cohesive and enjoyable album.

Immortal - At the Heart of Winter (1999)
>black metal

Certainly doesn't stray far from what you'd expect based on the cover and the title. This is some of the iciest black metal around, with piercing, dissonant riffs and spooky, eerie soundscaping abound. The sound itself is remarkably polished for how raw and urgent the riffs are, and there's never any real dissonace between these two aspects. The cleaner moments are kinda cheesy and overbearing, but when these guys really latch onto a riff, it's awesome.

3.0-

Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (1985)
>art pop, progressive pop

Neck and neck with The Dreaming in terms of quality, but his edges its predecessor out with its pure pop grandiosity. The whole a-side is just total pop perfection. Bush gives baroque pop an '80s update and infuses the most gorgeously orchestrated and composed songs with ominous, industrial beats and glorious synth washes, all coupled with her absolutely perfect voice. The b-side is a bit more abstract in nature, and this abstract style is done a bit better on The Dreaming. Abstractness here tends to float away into meandering territory, but Bush generally knows when to reel it in and employ some wonderful pop tricks and influences from many different genres and cultures. Very, /very/ good, but it just misses that extra step towards masterpiece territory.

>暗黒大陸じゃがたら 〈Ankoku Tairiku Jagatara〉 - 南蛮渡来 (1982)

This is a decently fun album. Sort of an amalgamation of influences, if you can imagine--I hear post-punk with a bit more emphasis on compositions, funk rock, even some city pop influence, and quite a bit of Talking Heads and Can. It's all a bit more nuanced than one might expect with plenty of horns and choral accompaniment. There's plenty of good musicianship here and to my ears, the main thing keeping this from the same level as its influences are some predictable and not-so-inspired rhythms, which makes it feel a bit like a party album.
6.5/10

Kaleidoscope - Kaleidoscope (1969)

Hey, yet another 60s psych group named Kaleidoscope. This is on the poppier side than any of the other groups, almost without any heaviness at all. Two things are noticeably absent from this release: songwriting sensibility and discernible music talent. The playing is passable, but they most certainly can't sing well or write a bold or memorable melody. Fortunately, some cool dated production with tons of reverb and fuzzy guitars and Hammond organ make up for it. All notable moments come on the B side ("Once Upon a Time There Was a World") when they start experimenting a bit more with the atmospheric qualities of the songs, upping the organ and playing around with more interesting bass lines, branching out with rhythms, like on "I'm Crazy".

>Eluvium - Lambent Material
very emotionless ambient, but thats just what i like in ambient. its nothing but pure beauty and atmosphere, swallowing you whole. its great.
3.5
>Talking Heads - The Name of This Band Is
The sound on this live album is amazing. Its so crisp and just sounds so damn good. And its all of Talking Heads' best songs, performed live even better. How could I not love this?
4-
>Unwound - New Plastic Ideas
I'm a big fan of Unwound's early stuff. It's much more raw and anxious and noisy. This may not be as good as Fake Train, but its still excellent and packed with emotion. I could see this growing on me hard in the future.
3.5+
>Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala
Jens is so damn charming. Every song's arrangement and lyrics made me smile, regardless of how bittersweet they might be. The obvious best track on here is A Postcard to Nina, but every track still offered something new and fun. I really enjoyed it.

The Dicks - Hate The Police
One of the best hardcore releases I've ever heard, easily. I could listen to the A side on repeat indefinitely and still be content with it. B side is alright, nothing that special in comparison to The Dicks' magnum opus on side A.
4.0+, maybe higher

Meshuggah - Catch Thirtythree
If I was listening to a jazz piece that repeated the same vamp for minutes on end, I'd turn that shit off. Meshuggah's "djent" technique is just about the only thing progressive about them, besides the incidental focus placed on maintaining "rhythmic complexity" instead of writing music that is melodically or harmonically good. Now, they do through out a solo every now and then, which is cool, but vast segments of the album are dominated by one trick riffs repeated ad nauseam. Their use of chromaticism, microtonal bending, key changes, dissonance etc. just seem to be vehicles to serve the "unsettling" atmosphere of the album instead of the music itself (for example, the dissonant second half to "Mind's Mirrors" only serves to build tension for riff centered "In Death - Is Life"). Wouldn't be prog metal without needles ambient interludes. All of this in mind, the album does flow remarkably well, and, while sometimes very repetitive, their riffs are usually pretty good for what they are trying to be.
In conclusion, here is a song I wrote in tribute to Meshuggah in tab format

>Electric Octopus - This Is Our Culture (2016)

These guys came out of nowhere and I think they'll be a force in upcoming years. I heard about them after they just released a nearly four-hour-long album of improvised spacey jams. It's the same here but features only three 20-minute-plus jams that remind me a bit of Neal Casal's Circles Around the Sun Dead-inspired jam album from a couple years ago. The sound is similar, at least. It's an understated three-piece band with lots of wah-wah guitar as the clear center of the group, but the band does a great job of responding instantly to the avenues the guitarist goes down--this is its most impressive characteristic. The guitarist knows some licks, and it's a bit closer to Scofield than Hendrix in style, but it's all on the safer side without ever going out there and peaking completely.
6/10

>Bunny Wailer - Blackheart Man (1976)

This is quite similar to The Wailers' work with Bob Marley, of course, but the focus is a bit different. This strikes me as more instrumentally-focused--I think these compositions and arrangements are more nuanced than Marley's records--it's the band, after all. There's some incredible layering to this album, as such that you'll notice little flourishes here and there on "Armagideon", for example, that didn't initially register. Even saxophones on "Bide Up"? Moments like this are all over. Anyone who thinks reggae is overly simplistic/all sounds the same/etc. should hear this. But also that this is more of a full band effort means it doesn't have Marley or nearly as memorable hooks. For "more serious listeners," as they say.

Candy Claws - Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time (2013)
>dream pop, neo-psychedelia

Stale songwriting and brickwalled production falter an otherwise pleasant, dreamy pop album. The atmospheric tracks on here really tend to just blend together, both due to the complete lack of dynamics presented here and the generally similar sound that pervades throughout the whole album. The pop tracks, on the other hand, are really well-done. Melodies are pushed forward in a unique manner, without ever compromising sheer catchiness and memorablity, and the instrumentation is crisp and quirky. Pretty solid for an album I only really knew as a meme.

>Nikos Veliotis, Taku Sugimoto, Kazushige Kinoshita & Taku Unami - カルテット (Quartet)
Really wish this this would have rode, for the entirety of its 70+ minutes, the wave of its peak.. i'm of course talking about "Aceghd", a track with a unique sort of abstract beauty, a certain kind of melancholy that really plucks at the strings of my emotions. "Improvisation" gives me these same feelings but on a lesser scale, and "Music for 4 Stringed Instruments" didn't really resonate with me at all. Overall, very interesting and pretty, despite the somewhat critical tone of this "review."

>Cecil Taylor - Conquistador! (1968)

The title track isn't really as free as it might suggest from the get-go, which I have to admit is a relief because it feels like an aural assault and Taylor's piano playing style happens to sound like he's hitting the keys indiscriminately in the freer moments. The more deliberate back half of the track is much more interesting to my ears where it feels like, you know, the members are responding to each other and creating some sort of mood beyond chaos. Then again, I suppose this is the point--that it's not really about the freeness, but the bookended moments of clarity between.

The B side, "With (Exit)" is more immediately listenable and sounds closer to Miles Davis' work from a few years later. It's kind of an interesting in how it's the opposite of the opener: sparser, organized moments with individual solos before erupting in chaos, thus mirroring the whole album. Holistically, I do like this album a bit.

>Hidria Spacefolk - Symetria (2007)

This one wears its influences on its sleeves but that's ok. There's certainly some Allman Brothers in a lot of the guitar lines, Phish in the funkiness (check out live stuff for a similar idea if you can get past the stigma...you should), Rush in some of the inherent corniness. The spaciness reminds me a bit of what Causa Sui does, as well, but whereas Causa Sui gives off the feeling of fluidity because much of it is improvised organically and takes its time to unfurl, this is clearly composed and feels a bit more rigid in a prog rock way than I typically prefer. The drummer in particular ought to have matched the open-endedness of his bandmates rather than playing the four-on-the-floor stuff on almost every track.

THE RESULTS ARE IN
>Codeine - Frigid Stars
Took me by surprise just how much I loved this. I listened to it back in 2015, and it really didn't do anything for me then, but it hit me so hard this time. The dense atmosphere, the melancholy lyrics, the dissonance, the thick guitar sounds... It's pretty much what I want from my slowcore.
