What's Disco Inferno like? They're probably the band that most interests me and for that reason I'm putting them off until I feel like giving it the most intense listen to ever.

Tfw you get so used to clicking signposts for vehicle captchas and start failing them as a result.

man idk how you would describe em desu
theyre post rock, but not in the same way GY!BE or Talk Talk or Sigur Ros is post rock. They use a lot of samples in their stuff to make a super dense and psychedelic atmosphere, and they're a lot more energetic and surreal. im loving all that im hearing from them so far

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

richard youngs - festival

this is a really weird one. sort of unclassifiable. it made me think of like, old school 80s industrial except with the sounds replaced with more organic and "bright" instrumentation. i'm not sure i'd call this ambient or drone or improv or whatever else fully. the second track made me think of sets of some sort of object (the other instruments maybe?), and then the loud DING! that repeats is the separator between them that makes each section contained. track three is like a never ending sigh and a dimension bending space exploration playing at the same time. it also sounds a lot like the intro bit to transparent radiation by spacemen 3 which is cool. there is something very early ariel pink about track four in that it reminds me of the little bits of ambient sound between his song songs. track five is definitely one to stare out at the sea to on a foggy grey morning. the songs can seem a little basic for being so long but its p neat.
>>
very close to rating the movie Boss Baby a 0.5/5 without even watching it after sitting next to my sister seeing bits of it and after seeing that fucking stupid face everywhere.. why are they starting to animate movies like this i'm seeing it more and more
>>73756370
kek i loathe the third track of Hell Driver.. why did they think that was a good idea?

the rest is amazing though so its still a 4/5 for me
>>
>>73761298
Where is the jumpscare? Was it supposed to be the horn section? I guess if the volume was dead high it might catch me off guard, really fun that was.

>Disco Inferno - 5 EP's
more disco inferno goodness. although i like the structure and atmosphere of d.i. go pop more, this was still a damn good compilation of DI's works. all the songs are very slow and dreamy and psychedelic and noisy, its a good time.
3.5-
>Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle
honestly i wasnt a huge fan of this. the melodies didnt really catch my ear and the eclectic nature of the album just wasnt my style. ive said before that art pop is hit or miss for me, and this is a miss. however, the concept in itself is really sweet, so its a bit above a 2.5 just for that.
3-
>Kazma Kazma
this is some batshit insane slav rock, its a ton of fun. the songs lasted a bit longer than i would have liked them too, but i enjoyed the general sound and feel of the album.
3+
>Impossible Nothing - Phoneminomicon
god damn what an exhausting fucking listen. 4 hours and 20 minutes of the most banging ass hip hop beats ive ever heard. im not gonna lie, i skipped around a lot, but i loved what i heard. its not just the same beat for 10 minutes, but the way it seamlessly transitions between different beats and atmospheres is really remarkable. i want to throw this on next time i have a super long car ride.
3.5-

The rows are from top to bottom: "nu essentials" vaporwave; some punk-type stuff because I don't listen to punk; some random Japanese stuff in genres I don't listen to; and then a comfort row for stuff I know I'll enjoy.

ok here's my first

I had seen this album in the RYM classical charts for a while now and just assumed it was some generic postminimal stuff. you know, the typical RYM stuff that gets forgetten a few years down the line. reading the background surprised me and got me very interested (this composition was forgotten for 50 years, and the primary inspiration for La Monte Young)

while it's historically significant, listening through disc 1 didn't really show me anything that I didn't already hear and get bored with in the Well Tuned Piano prior. it's absolutely a great piece, and tremendously important, but when it comes to personal enjoyment there are a lot more minimal records that I prefer.

How about we leave psychedelic rock to these guys, or germans in general, they gave us krautrock after all.
Pretty hypnotizing, this gives a lesson to all those current bands pretending to make krautrock, these guys even show off at times making use of noisy guitars and building atmospheres reminiscencent of post-rock and space rock.
Sad enough I'm listening to this a year after missing this band set
Favorite tracks: Parhelion, Synchron, Haeata

>Nouvelle Vague - Nouvelle Vague
>Bossa Nova, Sophisti-pop
3.5-
I came to this album because of the descriptions I got of it; bossa nova, new wave, and somewhat a "twee" feeling?, sign me up.
And I actually think the result is nice, I even liked half of these covers just as or more than the originals, but those that I didn't are part of my problem with this record, it lacks variety and the concept gets old. Enjoyable yet not memorable.
Favorite tracks: In a Manner of Speaking, This is Not a Love Song, Making Plans for Nigel, Teenage Kicks

So, should I go through all my hip-hop album that I collected while in high school (a lot of is just generic stuff from where are they nows, also want to see how much my taste in music has changed) or the vaporwave albums that have been sitting on my desktop for like 2 years.

>>
>>73770371
I enjoy future funk and vaportrap, but I find a lot of vaporwave artists just try too hard to stand out in a genre that's basically 80s jap pop. So hopefully something that sounds nice without sounding pretentious.
>>
>>73770422
alrighty then

look more into vaperror's newer stuff if you haven't already.

also note: if you like future funk, you might as well just listen to normal city pop. there are a bunch of charts on RYM for that.

as far as more recs go

hear these if you haven't already:
Chuck Person - Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1
Macintosh Plus - Floral Shoppe
chris††† - No Lives Matter

More ambient faire:
Mega Master & MJ Linckoln - Jurassic Park
Black Label - Homeword Alternative
sky空 - final day 千秋楽
仮想夢プラザ - 一つとして

More traditional style works:
GAMESHARK™ - SHARK フローティン グふわっと
- O
Channel 505 - 5日の展望
death's dynamic shroud.wmv - 世界大戦OLYMPICS
s a k i 夢 - 夢の中で失われました
Siddiq - Arnecia Hawkins
VINTAGE 북쪽 - Northland
Hotel Parallax - ECSTSY の ©OMPUTE®

Some slightly more abstract stuff:
ECCO UNLIMITED - NHK Reminds You to Boost Your Signal
CASINO MASTER - ボーナススピン幸運 !!!
Thought Adjuster - You're Not Alone
DAILY MIDNIGHT催眠术 - Journey Through the Mind
NASA NASA NASA NASA NASA - Kyoto Palm
押͢花̎ƒl᷊o͚w̯e̟r̘s͘ - f̗l̗e̗s̗h̗-̗p̗e̗r̗c̗e̗n̗t̗a̗g̗e̗-[%].mov

hope some of that helps

Listened to this while tagging some albums. Really enjoyed the repetition and the samples, especially near the end. Some of the songs also reminded me of the conet project with the eerie repetitive talking. Pretty solid where vaporwave is concerned. 3.5/5

>Courtyard Music Group - Just Our Way of Saying Hello (1975)
This acid folk album is an ultra-rare LP pressing that was somewhat recently unearthed and will earn you big bucks if you come across a copy. The album is also almost certainly just about the 13-minute track, "Jam and Gipsy Cream (The Magician)", a long stoned jam that feels much more like it came from 1968 instead of 1974 and is certainly worth checking out--almost akin to Mark Fry's "The Witch". It feels like it could keep going and going and probably should have, because the other songs here are below average, amateurish, or just totally derivative.

5/10

>Trees - The Garden of Jane Delawney (1970)
I've been meaning to get to this one for awhile after all the praise I've seen heaped upon it as a standout psychedelic folk album. It's as if anything from this few year stretch with flute and and a woman singing Celtic- or British-sounding melodies gets thrown in with the genre canon, and I suspected this might be similar (ie, in need of a kick). And it is, but it also undoubtedly has acid-fried characteristics as well. It's about a 50-50 split between pastoral folk and fuzzed-out jams at times, like the thumping highlight, "Lady Margaret", not dissimilar to krautrock.

"She Moved Thro' the Fair is undoubtedly a psychedelic jam of the variety Grateful Dead did with acoustic jams in the 60s or Jefferson Airplane would do at their most stretched-out--or really, similar to what Steve Gunn does today. I irrationally feared it might be on the airy, insubstantial side--and there's plenty of that as well, truth be told--but it does kick harder than much Pentangle or Fairport Convention I've heard.
>>
>>73774919

>>73774969

>>
>>73775038
6.5/10

>Exuma - Exuma II (1970)
Exuma's first album had some of the most unforgettable hooks I've heard. "Exuma the Obeah Man" and "Mama Loi Papa Loi" in particular are the types of batshit-insane choruses that'll stick in your head after a single listen.

Most noticeable about this follow-up is just how similar it is. I'm reaching for an analogy, but it's like Exuma II is made up of leftover studio bits from Exuma, intended for those who wore the predecessor down to the groove and want just a little bit more. If that sounds as appealing to you as it does to me, give it a listen. But alas, it's not what this is and so it comes across ever so slightly as a regurgitation of the debut--"Damn Fool" followed by "Baal" kind of sounds like "Exuma the Obeah Man" followed by "Dambala", doesn't it? None of it quite matches the predecessor, still. One review here mentions how Exuma's A side followed by Exuma II's B side would make the ideal album, which is an interesting thought. I'm just going to have to spend more time with it.

Slog. That early post-punk sound is just such a slog for me, oy. So joyless and sterile. The band didn't even sound like they wanted to be playing, not from pain but from tedium. There were definitely interesting parts and times where the instruments leaned toward a Residentsy sound which was a nice tug of affection, but overall the record sounded like hour 8,437 of an eternity condemned to playing post punk in hell, which dampened the experience.

Really enjoyed the lo-fi sound and I can see why some people might like it over ITAOTS. 4/5
>In the Dutch mountains - nits
Upbeat, fun, and homely -- nothing more to say. 3.5/5

Golden Living Room - Post-Internet

This album is pretty varied, it has those new-age drones typical of GLR's sound, but which are also bookends to some classic-style vaporwave in the middle. I like the ambient because it's similar in layering to Virtual Phantasy 2097, but has the hollow chamber production quality to simulate lo-fi without actually being lo-fi, a thematic nod to more dystopian future aesthetics. It also sounds like vaporwave, I know that's weird to say, but often vaporwave artists will miss the point and don't go for a mood, but I got the imagery I was after while immersing myself in the soundscapes.

The bad parts are the pure classic-style in the middle, very bad. Completely forgets what mood it's going for and doesn't simulate the sexy, drugged out scape of the 2012 crop that the "classic" part is named after. It's also a bit of an immersion breaker, I was enjoying the drones! Occasionally it will segue this with the ambient to bring some of the mood back, but only occasionally.

So on the whole, some solid GLR ambient soundscapes as a respectable variation on his sound, but lets down on the changeup. 3 stars

Why is gender such a HUGE discussion in the rym community?

What's weird is that RYM users are so big on appearances, being unique, and coming off as "patrician". Does this prove that being a non cis gender is just another thing people like to do to feel special, since the kinds of people in the RYM community are the same kinds of people who tend to go against their gender??

>RYM users are so big on appearances, being unique
it's not it's just a few outspoken individuals, you'll naturally notice those more and so those few influence your image of the community as a whole. i guess that's also many transpeople but my guess would be that because rym is largely very affirmative of them (how that came to be idk) and they may be repressed irl, that given such a platform they use it as a main social outlet. i don't know though, but i would hate to immediately jump to cynical conclusions like
>Does this prove that being a non cis gender is just another thing people like to do to feel special
that's correlation at best, not proof

New here. Trying to discover some new music instead os just listening to basic shit.

Recently I've been listening to a lot of John Fahey. I really enjoy his live album The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick.

I've also been obsessed with Daikanjyo.

is it?

>>73776861
>Does this prove that being a non cis gender is just another thing people like to do to feel special
because obviously people choose to be socially ostracized for who they are. surely being transgender is something you just start being whenever you feel like it and isn't like something you just are regardless of whether you want it or not.

I'm not going to review music; I don't like to think critically about it, so I'm just going to write what I thought about it
>music for the masses - depache mode
Good stuff. Didn't have any expectations going in, but they would have been understated.
>saturation - brockhampton
Better than I thought it would be. Not a fan of the slower songs like 2pac, but they don't detract much from the album.
