The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Various Artists - Mono no aware (2017)
>ambient
70-odd minutes of ambient goodness, no more, no less. It's incredibly straightforward and simple, rarely taking risks, but every artist here turns in great, atmospheric work that creates wondrous, swirling atmospheres, despite the generally repetitive nature of the album. It does flow remarkably well for being a various artists compilation, which is probably the greatest strength here. It may be repetitive, but this repetion leads to perfectly flowing tracks and a common theme that every artist here abides to, which is one of the greatest compliments I can give to a various artists comp. A new favorite for the year.

Blazing Saddles is cool though.
listening to either/or rn for the first time in a while and christ I might have to bump it to a 4, it's a pretty fucking perfect album.
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil (1966)
>post-bop
More rock-solid bop from Shorter. Doesn't do anything that extreme, or that different from Juju, but it's technically and compositionally immaculate. Hubbard's trumpet is the star here, he solely occupies the left channel and his bombastic military call style completely steals the show. Shorter is of course great as well, as is Hancock's kaleidoscopic piano work, Carter's steady bass, and Jones' swing-based drumming. For how technically and compositionally perfect this is, it does get hurt by just sounding a bit too standard and basic, which is a similar problem I had with Juju. I'm not sure if it's just my own personal oversaturation with the genre, or a legitimate problem with the album in comparison to its closest peers, but it's definitely a problem to me. Still, an immacuately put together jazz album that's wonderful to listen to.
3.0
Murmuüre - Murmuüre (2010)
>atmospheric black metal, ambient
The atmosphere here really is something else. It's "atmospheric black metal" with the "atmospheric" part kicked up to ten. It's one of the most singular, unique albums I've ever heard, blending this odd black metal style with industrial, psychedelia, and pure ambient and doing it shockingly well. Definitely not perfect, with some overdone "indie" elements taking me out of the album's dark, foreboding atmosphere, but exceptionally cool and creepy nonetheless.

you won't have to see it anymore!
>>73678579
but you already panned SCUM and I have worries for Nujabes and Sunn. Im sure you won't give discipline the 0.5 it deserves, either
Hella - Total Bugs Bunny on Wild Bass (2003)
>math rock
Another mostly failed attempt by Hella to add other superfluous elements into their tried and true guitar/drums sound. The electronic here grate more than anything, which is a shame because the tracks here that focus just on Seim and Hill are great, Hill specifically turning in a great, crisp, hard-hitting performance. Nothing can touch Hold Your Horse Is, but this comes closer than The Devil Ain't Red.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk – Rip, Rig & Panic (1965)
>Post-Bop
I like how the piano plays all these fun melodies. The interplay between drums and bass is also amazing. There’s a constant variation in the brass section throughout the tracks (apparently all played by Kirk himself) which keeps this interesting, even if it’s responsible for the worst track on here (From Bechet, Byas And Fats), where he used a manzello, some kind of modified version of a saxophone that has a disgusting timbre imo. I’m surprised not more /daily/-people have rated this on rym, I’m pretty sure most of you would enjoy this. 6/10, might go up

Good-day /daily/, just got back from my from my holiday so I'm back to having proper internet access (using the VITA to browse 4chan wasn't entirely to my liking), couldn't find a full YouTube video/playlist for Stereolab's Transient Noise Bursts With Random Announcements so I figured I'd listen to the first two Tortoise albums instead among the usual albums that I listen to, a lot of Wolf Parade thrown into the mix;
>The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms. This album was quackin' crazy, love the drumming on this alongside the jittery guitars
>Tortoise - s/t. Very sparse album though the krautrock-inspired percussion has particularly grown on me, listened to it in one video so I didn't take note of the tracks (same with Millions), rather enjoyed it though.
>Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die. Jesus fuck this album was awesome, I'd expand more on it though every anti-virus updating itself at once, forcing me to restart my computer makes me unable to do so.

Been a while. Just saw Baby Driver last night, it made me wanna listen to albums again.
Listened to Oxbow's "Let Me Be A Woman", didn't like a single track. A shock considering I remember liking every track on the first two albums they made. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion piqued my interest with that great track that started off the movie, so I wanted more. Debut album was like a really white Howlin' Wolf with noise rock, didn't light a fire under my ass. Listenin to "Orange" as I'm writing this. I get the impression that the lead singer has a lot of fun and just likes to put on different voices for the hell of it.

>>73692665
You can judge music for yourself, but I'll give my take. You gotta look at the album holistically. It's one of my top 3 albums ever, but I'd never listen to the freak out stuff on its own. Its more about the entire structure of it. It's all about this tension between order and chaos after the first half that they've modeled after the psychedelic experience--you know, the returning themes, the drums and chanting section, the return to conventional song structure at the end.
went ahead and listened to accel's second rec because I don't feel like listening to jazz.
that was terrible. texting chinese man is not happy.
I just hit 1000 artists scrobbled thanks to this comp, so that's nice I guess.
Various Artists - beko_cs02
>dream pop
I was expecting a chillwave comp, but this is a lot more diverse in a bad way. There's synthwave, ambient pop, house, shoegaze, and even some fairly standard indie rock tracks near the end, making the whole experience scattered and incoherent. All of the songs have some degree of distortion or reverb, but the quality of the tracks is as spotty as you'd expect from a netlabel of essentially bandcamp projects. Ultimately it's not worth sifting through the 21 tracks to find anything of worth, even if I did hear some songs that I somewhat enjoyed.

>inb4 I still move on
I realize you asked for bleeps and not electronic but geez
I'm guessing it went like this: the vocal samples irritated you in the first row tracks, third track did nothing
I thought whag was particularly great about this EP is how Koreless refuses to use any actual beats to progress his tracks, but still manages to make a compelling atmosphere with synths you'd expect from older progressive electronic work and a really powerful brass texture. It's very succinct at 24 minutes, and I'm sure it wouldn't have worked if it was any longer.
>>73693687
I'm cool with eletronic, I just didn't like it.
yes the vocal samples were terrible. the synths were not good as well. I failed to feel any type of interesting atmosphere, but it might have been because the awful vocal samples kept reminding me how out of place they were
>>73692953
that's actually an interesting concept, do you think the band had something like this in mind while making the album? aumgn and perking o are the only songs i dislike but they're so long it really pains me to listen to that album all the way through. everything else is great as usual.

Definitely. Tons of jazz albums (more savy jazz listeners can corroborate?), every Grateful Dead concert, follows this formula of having an intentionally abrasive, chaotic 4th quarter before a return to theme. I think "Bring Me Coffee Or Tea" is a literal reference to the psychedelic comedown as well.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Lou Reed Doing A Gay Voice
Several interesting tracks, most featuring Cale’s viola playing, punctuated by rather bland garage rock songs.
4-
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Yeah it’s pretty good. I don’t like how almost all the percussion is acoustic compared to their previous 3 albums.
4.0+
Have A Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
The album bandcamp projects should be striving to make. Read the booklet included with the album if you haven’t. The cheap drum machines can be grating - compare to an album that uses cheap drum machines to great effect like Suicide’s debut. The incredibly poor production does help to create a resonant, noisy quality to many tracks, most on the second disk titled “The Future,” which also features more synthesized tracks than “The Plow That Broke The Plains.” “Earthmover” is the probably the best song. Very much mood music, but it doesn't exactly try to be anything else.
4.0+
Kraftwerk - The Man Machine
Hmm yeah it’s like disco for the whites. Neat kinda pre industrial type sounds with the metallic sounds. Most of the songs aren’t terribly attention holding, Hutter and the boys should have made some more of them instead of stretching them out.

Grabbed a FLAC version of this album because it looked interesting, and it's got different flavors of noisey dreamy ambiance and older Berlin School synths. I'd add it to RYM but I don't think I can throw this on to the raster-noton label since they reorganized themselves to be two seperate labels (one for my boi Alva Noto)

Alphaville - Forever Young
[1984]
80's Synthpop record featuring the worldwide hit "Forever Young". A lot of the record is filler, but there's some great pieces that compensate - "A Victory of Love" is an amazing song. Also the synths themselves are delicious.

The first half was quite uninspired, however every single song from Jocko Homo and beyond is quite good, really wish the first half had the same energy.
6-/11
>The Alan Lee Jazz Quartet - Gallery Concerts 1973
Not sure what my thoughts on this would of been on this based on the genre tags but I do like this a fair bit, the singing does bring it down when it happens to be features. The drums in Dance of the Adolescents from Rite of Spring are just great. Plenty of tender moments throughout, focus is lost on a few tracks though.

SGDQ is on, Anyone planning on watching anything? Chrono Trigger on Thursday night, woo
Taking a break from music but here is a brief update I forgot to post.
>Autechre - LP5
I think I'd like these guys a lot more if I listened to them earlier. All of their stuff is solid, and I can appreciate the fact that they were at the forefront of techno at the time. Yet, when I listen to them I can't help but think "been there, done that".
>Bugskull - Phantasies and Senseitions
I feel like I should have liked this more than I did. It reminds me of a more sparse, less noisy STGSTV with jazzier instrumentation. I couldn't get into it though. I think I'll return to it when I'm in the right mood to give it a better assessment. There are elements to this record, namely the ghostly atmosphere, that are worth returning to.
>Toshimaru Nakamura - No Input Mixing Board
Very cool, enjoyable onkyo music. It's probably the best album as an entry point into the genre. The range of sounds that Nakamura squeezes out of pure audio feedback is impressive.
>>73702953

Techno Animal – Brotherhood of the Bomb (2001)
>Industrial Hip Hop
Really interesting noisy Hip Hop a bit in the vein of Dälek (who are actually featured on the last track), but it’s a bit bloated and I could do without most of the instrumental tracks. The tracks with rapping also have the most intense noise attacks and the combination of noise and rap is where this album really shines. The track that does this best is DC-10 (with Sonic Sum) imo and it is my favorite track on here. 6/10
What next? You can also pick from...

...my 2017 chart if you want
>>73703380
Underrated album imo but you're right about the instrumental tracks. Dalek's feature is my favorite track.
Check out Oblivion Access by Lil Ugly Mane if you want a better balance of noise and rap.

The Frogs - The Frogs

A collection of short lo-fi pop songs with an average to bad singer but occasionally cute melodies. When your record feels like it has already said everything it has to say in its first 15 minutes it's definitely not a good sign.
