Rest in peace DJ Screw. Today is the anniversary of the legendary freestyle session as heard on the DJ Screw's June 27th mixtape.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

just a thought.
While i really enjoy the BCD compilations, i feel like they fqil to properly capture the quality of the songs in them. The short edit of Quadrant Dub is a disgrace compared to the full thing. I mean of course, you can't just put the full length of every song because the compilation would be too fucking big but i believe that compilation to be more of a bunch of samples of the sound they made rather than the ultimate, definitive go-to listen of Basic Channel.

btw Idk if y'all remember but I had to order the this Jeanne Marie record because it's not available online. It's really damn good too if you're into 80s post-punk/ethereal wave. I'll try ripping/uploading it within the weak. It has a few pops here and there but nothing serious.

Pianos Become The Teeth - The Lack Long After (2011)
>screamo
Obviously I'm being pretty flippant here, but that was a nice listen. I only wish that more of the songs could take notes from the closer, because up until that point the vocalist is pretty one-note (though there are instrumental parts that act as the softer moments before some of the crescendos). My other favorite song is Liquid Courage, because it shows off what I think are the real strengths of this album: the post-rock instrumentation, and the drumming.
3.5

Thee Oh Sees - Warm Slime (2010)
>garage rock
Technically I'm familiar with John Dwyer because I used to listen to Coachwhips a bit, but that couldn't have prepared me for this. The title track was pretty neat, I like how the driving rhythm of the bass/drums/vocals kept things together while everything else went in a lot of interesting directions.
The rest of the tracks ranged from alright to meh though. Flash Bats was probably the high point, but I Was Denied and Everything Went Black in particular felt like they were trying to prolong the vibe on the title track, but without doing anything interesting to justify it. I never listen to this kind of music so maybe I have shit taste, but as a whole this was just "okay" for me.

hey /blog/, how's the Richard Dawson circlejerk going?

saw LCD in the city last weekend. Got completely smashed, sang and flailed like a drunk person, couldn't talk at all in the morning. Murphy and the crew came out like 90 minutes late, but it was still one of the greatest shows I've been to. They're getting old for sure but they've still got it I guess--It makes such a difference when the whole room has the same energy and knows all the songs and whatnot

and when they played Movement, that made my year

would rec catching their tour some time

And I'm going to catch Alex G in the city next friday with a friend, hype

Been really into Galaxie 500 recently. "Strange" may literally be about tripping on acid, but imo it's the most epic existential crisis I've ever heard. The way the vocals wail, so far from the mic too, is uh oh wow. "Tugboat Captain" has a similar arresting effect

Btw anyone know what happened to that chart I was doing w/ trip and rudi? I've been way busy and have been doing a miserable job of keeping up with the listening

>Oval - 94 Diskont
Not sure why I hated this that much before but the 29 minuites worth of the two "Do While" tracks are just nothing, I forgot the album was still on when the reprise happened. There's nice sound design but they don't use it anywhere close to its potential.
4+/11

>Autechre - Tri repetae
This is the Autechre I really don't like, mechanical typical IDM bleeps with nothing special in it. There are some "ok" tracks to help, or maybe an interesting sound with no good backing.

Going to sleep, but also posing a question

what makes you give an album a 9/10 or 10/10? Does it come with completely consistent enjoyment, or how much you want to relisten? Or is it the personal appeal to composition/production that pushes a solid album above?
>>
>>73622949
An 11/11 for me still has flaws, it's just that the emotional and enjoyable power that these 3 albums have given me have exceeded and have absolutely broken me emotionally in whatever way; Stema Tarnyt is happiness, Dark and Stormy Night is awe and 98.12.28 is beauty.
There's always a possibility for me to find an album that I could love even more than these 3, and I would have to make my ratings to go up to 12 to accommodate: Restricting your rating into a set value isn't for me, I want to sort it into my own categories I can determine from how I feel listening to different music.

Good day /daily/!

After rafting, cooking, football and drinking, I think it's fair to say that I'm having a good time at the team building.

Also I'm going to fucking Melbourne next week. Weird vacation cause all I'll do is settle my sister into her uni.

This is completely what I thought it would be although the voice here is bad most of the time (the male one), used as an element to narrate what feels like a movie, a weird movie.
Synthesizers sound dated but it has some psychedelic elements that make this record interesting, still its concept is better than the music found here

I'd listened to parts of Suicide before, but never liked it or understood the hype to keep going. Since I've made a chart with it though, I listened all the way through. There's some stuff I like about it quite a bit, but it just doesn't do much for me, and I still don't get the big appeal of it at all.

The Fishmans live album was fucking great though. It's the first thing I've heard by them despite them being posted everywhere on /mu/, but now I'll definitely be looking into their other stuff. I don't have much to say since I can't compare it to their studio work, but it was really great stuff.
>>
Also, just finished the leaked UNKLE album. It really impressed me actually. I didn't have high hopes for it at all but I really dug it. Would recommend giving it a chance.

Raul Ruiz - La ville des Pirates
[1983]

Many people compare Ruiz's films to Bunuel's, and I myself agree that it's a sober comparison because the type of filming and the surrealism are very similar. But one thing that sticks out about Ruiz is that, instead of feeling like dreams, they feel like old fables, there's something mystic and traditional about them that I find very special. I loved this a lot for the most part, it narrates the life of a girl named Isidore and a strange evil-peterpan like entity that she encounters; the plot is very fragmented and weird and not very satisfying if that's what you're looking for, but it contains much beautiful imagery, iconic scenes and some of the best sea shots I've seen in a movie. Pretty happy about it but I still prefer Manoel's Destinies.

Sup Brotendos! How are all of y'all?

From my tourney:

>natkingcole vs Mark And

With Beat Happening's jangly guitars and steadfast percussion, I was pretty hooked instantly. The baritone vocals are sleek and smooth, and the lighter female vocals are nice too. The riffs are simple and easy in little nuanced ways. Sometimes this simplicity can feel a little brain rotting, tiring, not all that fun. Sometimes, the bassy vocals like those on the title track or Bury The Hammer aren't really that attractive or don't really help the track (granted, this is on a first listen basis). Godsend was alright, just felt a little long-winded, especially in comparison to the other short tracks. Some riffs are cool, but it was just an alright experience. Highlights: Teenage Cavemen, Hey Day. (2.5/5)

The instant chaos and jaggedness of both the riffs, from both the bass and guitar, and the drums, felt sanctimonious, like a middle finger to the listener. And I liked it. Johnny's whinny, yippish set of wails did not come off good on Theme, it wasn't until he went into a lower register at the end of the track that I enjoyed his vocal pallette. But once the album shifted gears with Religion, the vocals proceeded to meld well, and damn Johnny came back strong. Religion and Annalisa were solid tracks, with catchy riffs that trudge powerfully through their durations. Public Image was a solid and catchy track. Fodderstompf has such a dancy beat to it, and the vocals are funny and get a chuckle out of me. A lot of these were solid in how primitive and jam-packed they were, bordering in some cases to No Wave. I liked it. Highlights: Religion, Annalisa, Public Image, Fodderstompf. (3.5/5)

Mark And, you can advance, friend.

Spots are still empty in one of the tourneys. If you select an album, you could suggest a new album for the pile to use for a future tourney. ;-)

Desire to relisten or # of times relistened doesn't really play any role for me. There are a couple of 5/5's I've only heard once or twice. It's about how much I like it desu idk.. usually it's one of these cases
>So beautiful it has made me cry like a bitch throughout

>Feel as if it's some sort of peak of art as a whole
>Changes how I view music and/ or my standards and expectations of music
If not any of those, then usually it's just jaw-dropping-ly good, consistently. I guess the difference between a 9/10 and a 10/10 is how much it affects me, in both how I view music and emotionally.

>Synthesize the Soul: Astro-Atlantic Hypnotica from the Cape Verde Islands 1973-1988

really really neat compilation album with an awesome back story. apparently some of these records never left the islands until they put this out.

"In Cape Verde, we had no access to electronic instruments,” said Tchiss Lopes, a Cape Verdean singer based in Rome. “In Europe, we had access, but we had to adapt. Audiences expected electronic sounds, but we still stayed true to our sound.”

"In the 1980s, that feeling transpired across Lisbon, Paris, Rotterdam, and Boston, as one the largest waves of migration from a single country, propelled by political instability and economic uncertainty, sent thousands of Cape Verdeans to the West’s cities. "

"Through 18 diverse tracks, this compilation reveals how immigration from the Cape Verde Islands to Europe and the United States gave us an alternate history of the electronic music that dominated hearts and minds across the world in the late 1990s. But the story doesn’t start in a major Western cultural hub, rather in the small cluster of islands 400 miles off the Senegalese coast, and offers an unparalleled insight into the long-term cultural splendor catalyzed by migration. "

"Largely overlooked outside the Lusophone realm, Cape Verde’s Astro-Atlantic gumbo of instrumentation and rhythm offers a timely lesson of migration’s power to produce cultural innovations ahead of its time. This unknown, ultra-progressive sound could not have been perfected without the induction of Cape Verde’s artistic human capital into the West. "

more cool back story in this article on the futuristic sounds coming out of cape verde in the 70s if anyone's interested

track 3 in particular is fucking incredible

>AHC - V
>Drone, Noise

I think there's a dying animal trapped in track 2

This record likes to use sparse, empty canvasses to splash small droplets of noise. It uses the same colors each splash, but rarely does it come out the same way, like in Test 1, what originally starts out as a wintery track ends up bursting into a breakneck sprint through fog. At0 follows with serenity (and a chipmunk), Holder has hints of Oneohtrix, and Zero Intensity reminds me of the first track of Andy Stott's latest album.

And right after that, 9 eight second tracks of silence, all with ellipsis. I threw these into audacity to see if something was in there... but I can only hear static, and the first 8 seconds of the actual next song, Inter1_exp. I am not seeing the reason for their inclusion besides kicking up the track listing from 11 to 29.

After 9 more tracks doing the same thing as those other 9 tracks, the remainder of the album continues to relinquish cold, bell filled drones.

It's a shame, but the unnecessary gimmick on this article drags it down. It did lead me to listen to all the shortest tracks in my library in succession, which poses an interesting concept for something like an EP. Other

6/10

>Jack O' The Clock - All My Friends
>Chamber Avant-prog-rock-jazz-folk pop

Not much to say besides how the album art makes this look like it'll be some Blind Willie Johnson stuff, when in actuality it's very colorful folk+chamber pop from a large group of musicians. On the surface level this reminds me of Eureka, but the lyrics are the interpersonal confessions of pop, and the compositions are planted deep in the ground and not aimlessly floating by themselves. A waterphone also makes an appearance, to which I learned can cost around 500+ dollars (as much as I'd love one, fuck that).

>Prince - Purple Rain
>Pop rock

The first two tracks are poppy fun, and then The Beautiful Ones come along and actually frighten me at the end of the song. On one hand, it's definitely a step above the majority of pop singers, and on the other hand my upper lip has rolled itself up my face in horror

It's also funny to consider that Darling Nikki may have been responsible for Parental Advisory stickers. There's a video of Frank Zappa testifying in court against the then declared "porn rock":

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parents_Music_Resource_Center

I Would Die 4 U is a real standout for me, grabbed me right from the get go. Skips a lengthy verse to indulge in the perfect harmony of the chorus, and transitioning in to Baby I'm A Star seamlessly.

The rails it laid for pop rock in the upcoming decades are clear. It's a shame that only two tracks are really sticking with me in terms of catchiness.

7/10

>Comus - First Utterance
>Freak/Prog Folk

Diana bursts foward with voices that remind me of The Knife, and The Herald follows with a highly enjoyable concerto only as the album's second track. AtDrip Drip's lyrics, I had the same epiphany many others probably had during this album's runtime.

Roger Wootton's vocals perform the narratives of each songs EXTREMELY well. Different intonations, belting out verses, and his range all play a part in being the album's highlight. I could go on about the second half of this album being just as strong as the first, there's not one week track here.

The music here puts the group's name into perspective, being named after Comus, Greek god of festivity, anarchy, and excess. With a group of Comus' size, it really does feel like I'm listening to the ramblings of a cult-- not exactly a cult from several centuries ago, with the modern instrumentation and all, but engrossing nonetheless.

Not one weak track on this thing, not including bonus tracks. Strong live performances, too.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Good drums as usual from panda bear. Lots of arps. Lots of bouncing effects.
About half really good songs and half mediocre to good songs
4+

Talking Heads - Remain In Light
One maybe bad song. Great guitar solos to be honest.
4.5

Kanye West - MBDTF
Most of the songs on here are good, they share some common production tricks, usually a standard Kanye sample based beat that’s backed by strings and other instruments. This album probably has some of his best lyrics (unlike Yeezus or Pablo) and production, but also some of his worst features (Jay Z, Jay Z, and Chris Rock). There’s a certain self awareness present on this album not seen in most of his other work.
4+

Death Grips - The Money Store
More heavily synthesized than their debut mixtape Exmilitary. Lyrics begin to go in a more abstract direction, instead of the hardcore inspired ones off Exmilitary. Bombs hard with “Fuck That,” a track that seems to have no relation between the vocals and instrumental, and several other cuts toward the middle of the album.
4-

Jay Z - The Blueprint
You’re killing me here.
2

Shellac - Terraform
A powerful 12 minute opening track consisting of a persistent bassline and drumbeat only occasionally accompanied by Albini’s trademark percolated noisy guitar hits and some very toned down vocals for Shellac. Sounds like some third bridge shenanigans on “House Full of Garbage.” Other songs are fairly run of the mill Albini-core, albeit a bit less angry.
3.5-

American Football - s/t
Fugazi for men whomst shave their legs. That car seat headrest fella must like these guys a lot considering how much he apes their sound. The trumpet does not work with their kind of music (it kinda works on the last track, I admit this)

>"field recordings"
This was apparently a /mu/tant project, which makes sense because I remember people getting mad about this album being shilled in sharethreads.
I put field recordings in quotes because this is really more like a sound collage/plunderphonics. A majority of the samples are spoken word, though there are some "natural" sounds. The big problem here is that a lot of the tracks are very long, and not engaging enough to justify it. qQ($) is probably the one track that has a clear sense of intention, but it drags on for almost 9 minutes with a very long spoken word recording that wears out its welcome by the first 2 or 3 minutes. The rest either have some half-decent atmosphere or are completely aimless. While this isn't as bad as I expected, it's not very interesting either.

Andrzej Zulawski's 1988 film "On the Silver Globe" is probably the most stunning & unusual film I've ever seen. Pic related.

He also did Possession in 1981, which was quite unusual. Also recommended.

And Kar-Wai Wong's "Ashes of Time" because more people need to watch it.

have you read others from Orwell? if you have why is it your favourite? I've still only read a few of his books but I'd say its probably one of his weakest, fiction or non-fiction

it's the least human of his books that i've read ('of course it is dummy its about animals hahaha!'), and I feel that's where Orwell really shines in books like Homage to Catalonia or 1984

still good tho

>>73647175
never read any other Orwell desu

1984 has of course been on my to-read list forever

what exactly do you like about his other stuff?
>>
>>73647222
with 1984 it delves into similar political stuff as Animal Farm but its a lot more human for lack of a better description. I'm probably just a bitch but I nearly cried near the end of it when I first read it a couple years ago. He goes more into the human condition than he does in Animal Farm.

With Homage to Catalonia it's just a fascinating look at Orwell's experience in the front lines of the Spanish Civil War and the infighting between the different communist and anarchist factions.

I really enjoy all of Orwell's work though, his writing's fairly simple but he conveys a lot.
>>
>>73647415
I'll probably like 1984 a bunch then I think

I think Animal Farm isn't great for humanity or anything tho

as I mentioned earlier, literally just super fun

but idk yea

Homage to Catalonia, I've never heard of before but commie V.S. anarchists sounds like real spicy stuff so added to the to-read list
