Question:

I've been playing guitar for 4 years or so. I can play a few different styles, but I've pretty much just learned by playing daily and by ear. I haven't learned any scales, or any theory. Well, I know, like, one scale in maybe one position or something.
I pretty much play whatever I feel like playing, for example, if I like something, I'll learn it by ear and then figure it out. I can't seem to force myself to learn stuff I don't feel like, because that's just how I am and I instantly just lose interest.

But I realise that if someone handed me a guitar and said "play", I'd freeze and probably play barre chords like a pleb.
I don't care for "shredding" and all of that stuff though. I mean, I used to love blues, and can play some alright stuff but now I don't even like that anymore. I don't see the instrument as a "one man band" thing in any sort of way, I see it purely as an instrument to make interesting sounds that I can then use to make interesting music. I don't actually care for shredding, or even being a great player. It's difficult to explain what I mean.

So how do I into learning properly? Where do I go from here? What do you recommend?
I've been looking at learning intervals recently.

there is nothing wrong with no knowing music theory if you can follow instructions.

but in my opinion learning music theory is really enjoyable but its just not for everyone. you need to really love music and willingness to learn + patience.
im assuming you already know what chords are just go from there.

for scale i recommend you learn how to play the major scale. modes are simply modifications of the major scale by a few notes.
i would go like this

keys,time signature/tempo,circle of fifths,chromatic chords,intervals

those are good concepts for reading music and understanding it.

for writing music i recommend scales, harmony, melody, pitch, song structure, tension and resolve etc
>>

you can either the memorize the shapes from internet charts so you cover the whole fretboard
or pick the notes of the scale (in the case of pentatonic Am, its A C D E G) and find them all over the fretboard by yourself and eventually memorize the shapes. remember to always know wheres the root on each position

There have been a lot of bassists who sing, they tend to be very competent bassists or write simple parts though. I mean if you just play root notes in simple rhythms(like straight 8ths) you could argue it's easier to play bass and sing than guitar, you could ride a lot of parts out without changing positions. So what if it's harder? Becoming good at any instrument isn't easy.

Or just write lyrics for someone else in your band to sing.

electric guitars, no matter how high of "quality" they are, hardly contribute to your sound. maybe some parts of it like humbuckers vs single coils vs p90s do, but buying an expensive guitar will hardly sound different, and nobody will be able to notice in live situation. maybe it can sound different in recording clean, but after production you won't be able to tell the difference. you are wasting money if you seriously think an 1600usd guitar is going to sound better than an 800usd guitar.

>>73572428
Nah, the guitar absolutely does effect the sound. its not just the pickups, the components of the guitar also changes the way the strings vibrate (which is why some guitars have more sustain than others).

It's true in a live setting this will be hard to notice, but it matters for studio recordings. it is true though you can get excellent guitars for reasonable prices nowdays

I own plenty of fancy gear other than guitars, and I think higher priced amps do have better quality than lower priced ones, and actually have an impact on your sound and playing. I just don't think higher priced guitars have any on your sound or playing up to a certain price point, which isn't a very high price point in the grand scheme of things.
>>
>>73572722
Alternate question - could I put together a Jazzmaster from parts instead for the same price?

I don't feel super confident in my woodworking abilities but I know there are plenty of places like Warmoth that sell pre-cut bodies and necks and the like. I recently put together a Carvin bass from one of the kits they sell and I'm super happy with how that turned out. My only concern would be the wiring, but I'm sure there are guides for that.

Anyone have any experience with this? Would it be worth the effort or should I just stick with the MIM? I'm willing to sink in the time if the end result is worth it.

>>73573607
thanks for refuting my argument. solid point dude.
>>
Is there any bass style that doesn't use wacky slap garbage?
>>
>>73573594
Putting one together would probably cost more and would have dramatically less resale value.
>>
I mic'd up my amp and I'm just trying to get a good recording. My gear isn't too great, cheap focusrite interface and an AT2020, but I can't get a clean recording without a huge amount of gain and noise. I can turn the mic down but then my levels are so low in audacity they barely cover a quarter of the track. Is this just the price of cheap equipment or is it possible to get a decent sound?
>>
>>73573695
Yeah I figured the resale value wouldn't be great. If I went to the effort to put it together and all then I'd want to hold onto it for a while so that part doesn't bother me.

It is disappointing that it would cost more, though. But the more I look at prices of bodies and individual pickups the more I think you might be right.

I would honestly be happy just to get a MIM and stain/repaint it since I hate the sunburst so much but that seems like it would be pretty easy to fuck up.
>>
>>73573767
Condensers have more noise naturally, turn up your amp more so you don't need as much gain on the mic.

Your tone can only be as good as your amp and cab, and mic placement affects it a shit-ton
>>
>>73573944
Okay thanks, I'll just play louder I guess. I've been able to coax a decent tone out of this old practice amp. As for mic placement I've been trying about a foot away and a little off center of the speaker. Any suggestions on that front?
>>
>>73573622
Yeah, you think. In other words you don't know.

Do the world a favor: learn the difference and stop running your mouth until you do.
>>
>>73573973
Try putting it like an inch away from the grill aimed right at the point between the cap and cone of the speaker. Might be way too bassy with that mic though. Dynamic mics are more common for that
>>
>>73574045
okay I know. I used to have fallen for the meme but now I know there's no difference. happy?

>>73573767
that's weird. first thing to do is try another cable bc a bad wire in a balanced audio cable will fuck up the signal.

if that's not it it might be fucked, even low end mics are usually serviceable so just take it to a tech if that's the case.

if you mean that it picks up unwanted noises like doors opening and dogs barking and stuff that's normal with a large diaphragm condenser mic, consider a 57 or maybe pic related for your amp.
>>
>>73574150

Jazzmaster Body from Rosser Guitars: $115
Allparts Strat Neck: $120
American 65 reissue pickups: $100 a set
Fender Jazzmaster Tremolo: $50
Kluson Tuners: $50
Staytrem Bridge: $100
Switches/pots/misc hardware/pickguard: $50
Finishing supplies ($50+ depending on the finish)

So around $650 but you have a guitar that will be much nicer in terms of pickups and bridge, plus you get to choose the exact look you want. Stain finishes like the one in your pic are really easy to achieve. You've got to have some decent soldering experience and common sense when it comes to finishing to the body for it to turn out as nice as a fender product though. It's not hard you just have to do your research and take it slowly/practice on scrap wood. Assembling your own guitar is a pretty rewarding experience.
>>
>>73574671
>you said was that I don't know what I'm talking about
Which you then admitted.

We were done a while ago but like I said, you're just too stupid to have realized it.
>>
>>73574797
you are basing this off of the phrase "I think" which obviously I'm going to say when arguing about something that most would say is based on subjectivity. I was framing what my argument was because you clearly weren't understanding it, as you were attacking parts of it I wasn't talking about. I'm sorry you don't understand how these things work.
>>
>>73574855
>based on subjectivity
Oh, now I see.

When you tell people an $800 guitar sounds just as good as any higher priced guitar you're presenting your subjective opinion as objective fact?

Wow, thanks for clarifying that!
>>
>>73574938
I'm saying being in a debate is different than writing an arguementative essay. You have to use this kind of language when doing so, because you are arguing with real people about these kinds of "opinions" even if it's based on objectivity. You see it all the time in politics and just general debate.

Also, last question before the thread hits the bump limit - are there stains I can get that will darken a lighter-colored wood like alder? For years I've loved the dark-colored look of this rosewood Jazzmaster but I gather it's not a common choice for guitar bodies and would probably be kind of a pain to find.

it depends more on the finish. but if you want natural finish maybe rosewood or blackwood but i think both are expensive.
you can finish your wood to look darker/different but i don't know exactly how this is done

holy shit its gonna crack

>i think both are expensive
Yeah that was my other big concern.
I'll look into dark finishes and the exact price and all that though. Thanks for the tips.

there are some inexpensive stuff they use on furniture wood

Aniline dye is my favorite for staining works well with most woods, goes on really evenly..At this point I wouldn't even bother with anything else since it works so well. Oil based finishes will work too but can come out blotchy.

Yes you can get dark stains.

when you are staining each coat of stain you put on will make the finished project darker FYI.

>tfw never cleaned my guitar fretboard in 5+ years
I won't clean it after 30 either.

Cleaning fretboard is true mark of a pleb.

This isn't a debate, this has been me pointing out how you're a retard and you inadvertantly corroborating that fact.

Do the world a favor and learn the difference.

>Being right handed

Is there anything worse than a right handed guitarist? I instantly turn them off if I see this. I don't listen to any music in which the guitarist is right handed. It's pure faggotry in music form.

Yes. Two ways.

One's called Transferwise and.

Other one is called ZCash. Unlike bitcoin, its transactions are encrypted and you cant know who the value came from. ZCash can be converted to bitcoins on ShapeShift.

transferwise or zcash?
>>
>>73576309
I don't know, I'll have to look into both before I risk anything.

We're both probably going to catch multiple bans as we go forward. Do you know how to change your IP? The easiest way for you if you don't want to go to any trouble is to unplug your router for a few minutes and plug it back in. Check your IP on Google before and after the wait to make sure it changed.
