Serious question: Do you think someone with an IQ below 100 can be a great performer, composer, or conductor?

>>73521887
Nope. 110-120 at a minimum. IQ sucks at measuring genius, but it's great at measuring idiocy.
>>
>>73521887
>great performer
Sure, plenty of stupid singers.

For composers and conductors it's a lot harder to say. I personally can't think of any idiots amongst the more famous of conductors, and I can only really think of Bruckner and a few others as being "uneducated," but it doesn't necessarily mean they would've done poorly on an IQ test.

It's a contested subject, people tend to have their own favorite. Mine is the most recent Musica Antiqua Koln one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqXZtGyFyDo

But others prefer piano-only versions like Koroliov. Hewitt's recent recording is also pretty decent.

Avoid any Emerson string quartet versions and you should be good.

I found a neat tool xournal that lets me apparently take notes on top of PDFs, but even this doesn't tell me why the horns add a D to their C minor chord in response to the strings' unison thing, and I haven't even gotten to the piano yet.

because there are some damn transposing instruments in there.
Why do transposing instruments exist? We already have C trumpets; why can't they use a slightly narrower bore on clarinets to make them sound C instead of Bb?

I took a music appreciation class for a humanities req and it sucked balls. Maybe like 5% was devoted to the Western canon. the rest was world music, and jazz, and indigenous gobbledy-gook. Makes me wonder if the cultural marxists will eventually wipe out classical altogether and replace it with hip hop dance classes or something gay like that. On a related note I visited my parents and we put on the music channels on their t.v. --- to my surprise and chagrin there was NO classical. like that is what people put on for these music channels, no? they have adult alternative, hindi, bollywood, all this ethnic crap, 10 different kinds of rock, trance, electronic, 5 different jazz channels, an easy listening which was mostly jazz and soundtracks, and NOT ONE classical channel. wtf is up with that? is tv just for proles or is this a concerted effort to wipe out what is clearly a white cultural remnant which reminds others of their inferiority and that Europe and European nations were never multicultural?

that section is so natural, but he's trying to forcibly sing everything 'accurately' instead of just feeling it. Overthinking it, but sometimes people struggle with 'natural' playing, especially if its not natural to them. Often takes sitting down with the composer or conductor or listening to a recording to 'get' it.

I wanted to write a rant on how overrated Mahler is, but this post encompasses it quite nicely:
https://www.gramophone.co.uk/forum/general-discussion/mahler-mahler-everywhere-why

What's your opinion on Mahler? The more I listen to it, the more I feel like it replicates Tchaikovsky's wrongs without some of his rights. I will never understand why so many people put his symphonies above Beethoven's, or any other for that matter; to me it's just overdrawn incidental music.
>>
Are Rimski-Korsakov's operas worth listening to?

>>
>>73537404
>but this post encompasses it quite nicely
Really? It doesn't even talk about his scores. Astonishingly lazy criticism, based on lazy listening. To the OP's credit, he does accurately state that Mahler is overplayed by conductors who should be nowhere near his music.

>the more I feel like it replicates Tchaikovsky's wrongs without some of his rights
Such as? They didn't even compose in comparable styles - well, aside from a superficial point one can make about their extroverted nature. If anything you should be drawing a comparison to Wagner or Schubert.

In the sense that one might have enjoyed their works more if they were the score of a summer flick, and the more you listen to them, the less there's to enjoy. Tchaikovsky is at least fun and has many enjoyable tunes and shorter pieces. Mahler also seems more bearable outside of his dreadful symphonies as well, though.

Absolutely overrated, if he'd have been born 100 years earlier it'd be revolutionary, but it was just because he was such a successful conductor that his music got programmed. A bit like Bernstein in that respect
>>
>>73538380
>but it was just because he was such a successful conductor that his music got programmed

Except the only critically successful symphonies in his lifetime were the 2nd and 8th, and it was only thanks to the reverence other relevant composers held for him (Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Britten, Shostakovich, Boulez, Maderna, Honegger, Zemlinsky, Copland, Weill, Eisler, Berio, etc. etc.), and the championship of so many conductors during the first half of the 20th century (Mengelberg, Walter, Rosbaud, Scherchen, Kubelik, Stokowski, Horenstein, Fried, Schuricht, Boult, Meyrowitz, van Kempen, Mitropoulos, etc. etc.) that he eventually became thoroughly recognized not just by connoisseurs, but by the greater public. Say whatever you want of his music, and the music which he influenced, but he undoubtedly had a very major effect on many key-figures of the 20th century, and without that influence, you cannot simply pretend as if everything would've been the same. Thus, Bernstein is a bad comparison. How many relevant and successful composers - heard and respected on a comparable scale as the ones mentioned above - can claim Bernstein as a major influence? I can tell you right now that not *one* of them comes close to the number of performances that Shostakovich has received, putting aside public recognition (as that would be an embarrassing wash)

Call his music overrated all you like, but it's objectively a fact that he helped shape a major part of the 20th century, and I would at least give him partial "revolutionary" credit for that.
>>
>>73537634
I like Schubert, and while I get what you mean in them sharing certain qualities (I often feel like his music tends to wander about with little purpose), I also find it to be a lot more enjoyable and not quite as "shapeless", if that's a thing.

I think Bruckner would be a better (and less distant) composer to compare Mahler too--and, again, I feel like there's no symphony of Mahler's that comes close in terms of elegance to Bruckner's 4th. I'll admit, however, that I've yet to listen to some of Bruckner's symphonies.

>>73537754
I don't know what the fuck you're onto, Schubert is often considered an early romantic composer.

>Schubert is often considered an early romantic composer.
"Attempts to look upon Schubert as a herald of the Romantic era are not convincing; in the final count he must be placed among the Classical composers. It is true that formal grace and balance in his compositions are often sacrificed to the exuberance of his imagination, but Romanticism is not the tendency to distort or modify Classical forms, but to dispense with them; and this Schubert was incapable of doing. Except the Fourth Symphony, none of his works bears a title of his own bestowing, none carries a programme, none is labelled with extra-musical hints. On the contrary - and the point has been made - his mature work grows more conventional."
