How do I get a "feel" for groove on the bass? Been trying to improv on some Marvin Gaye songs but I can't "get" it. Can any bassists on here recommend any good exercises to get a feel for groove?
>>
>>73461896
Move your head up and down at a steady pace and suck (inevitable as a newbie) until someone is happy with your skills.
>>
>>73461896
what you mean, groove

improvising or just playing the right notes at the right time?

I play bass and one thing I've learned over the years, is that we always need to listen to the drummer, pay attention and play with him, fill the gaps and try to play with a sense of rhythm

a bass hits lower frequencies, so for more funk/ r&b songs you should always keep in mind that you are the missing link between rhythm and melody

How to stop dropping my pick? My fingers get really smooth and slippery like I lose all my grip and it slips out so easily some days

>>
>>73464557
just play the songs you want to play
or write songs with current knowledge, acquire more when you feel stuck
>>
>>73464555
Not really. I had wanted a guitar ever since I was a boy and couldn't get one. When I finally did, I just strummed the strings open for like an hour listening to the sound of the instrument, and smiling because it was me making that sound.
Then I tried to play for like 16 hours straight. By the end of the first day I could play a couple of songs and some simple blues licks, etc.

Just depends how motivated you are. But like I said, it's not that important really. If you want to make music, it's not that important.

While I don't doubt that some people have an affinity for certain things and pick it up faster than others, I think you are drastically overstating your skill as a day 1 , not that it matters but its just kind funny to read
>>
>>73464743
Anon is probably referring to very basic shit. Any beginner can switch from A to Em.

No dude, Captain Badassâ„¢ was shredding on DAY ONE.
>>
>>73464698
I know, it was a big of a blog post but fuck it

>>73464743
I'm not at all. I could play a few open chords and basic blues licks with hammer ons.
I've always had great hand eye coordination and reflexes though

I found out early on that the trick to learning chords is to not strum at all and press down extremely hard until it hurts your fingertips, and for whatever reason, you learn much quicker.
Do that for like 5 minutes, just pressing down the chord until it hurts, releasing and doing it again, and for whatever reason muscle memory kicks in quicker.

I'm left handed, maybe that has something to do with it too?

>>73464814
Most can yeah
I made great progress within the space of a month

>>73464881
Not shredding, but certainly progressing faster than usual maybe
>>
>>73464892
I'm not sure pressing down hard is necessary, but leaving your fingers in chord formation for a while to get used to their position is useful.
>>
>>73464892
So you have gone from soloing Pink Floyd songs day one, to playing a few chords by pressing down on the strings really hard

Someone explain picks to me. I've always played fingerstyle so when I try to use one its like trying to play with four of my fingers chopped off. And I can't ever tell if I'm hitting the string with the pick because the pick does all the work. The only real benefit I can see is if you have sissy fingernails that break all the time, but they have fingerpicks for that. So what does everyone love about the single pick style of playing?

What kind of music do you play? I have the Orange Crush 120 and I like it a lot. I can get a lot of sounds out it. I am aware of the wattage difference, however, they should share the same circuit, as they are both solid state amps. You might want to upgrade the speaker of the combo with the money that you will save though, for better sound.

anyone got experience with Guitar Center's buyback program?

I've got a squier strat just sitting around that i haven't touched, and i've been thinking about trading it in for some extra money towards a guitar of my choosing.

Is it worth it to go through the trouble though? or should i try to flip it on craigslist or something for a better price?

You will always get the better price if you directly sell to some other guy. No middle man. I think the question is whether you want to deal with the bullshit of some random craigslist guy.

Yeah, you can get a jazz tone out that. I would assume you already own a hollow body guitar, so all you need is a clean tone, and a tiny bit of reverb. I would still advice you to play it first to see if it is to your liking, then again, I imagine you are getting at less than 100 bucks, so it would be a nice practice amp to have.

Learn simple songs from a bunch of genres. Pick out the key first (just hit some notes and try to figure out which ones do or don't fit), then figure out the melody by ear (literally just matching, this part is the easiest if you have even a marginally developed ear). Chords are the hardest to get but if you know enough shapes and know roughly how each one sounds you can get it right after some practice. You really need to know the key in order to get the chords right unless it's something stupid easy like power chords.

Just keep practicing after that.

I'm an end beginner/beginning intermediate player looking to learn some songs. Problem is: I love melodic mathcore, melodic hardcore, and basically a lot of faster/heavier styles of metal. Is it okay (and possible at all) to start off with those songs or do I work my way into it by first doing other kinds of music? It's not that I don't like anything else (listen to almost any genre on and off), but just that this is the music I'm learning the guitar for.
>>
>>73470044
Just find something relatively easy to play, ease your way into it. I was the same when I was starting to get the hang of playing, and wanted to play some harder songs but got discouraged again and again because I didnt have the ability to play the shit I really wanted to. But I guess it also depends on how motivated you are, maybe you have enough time and motivation to just keep practicing until you get the hang of it. Would probably take longer though

Thanks for the tip! Since a couple weeks I've been really motivated to improve my playing and try to practice about 1,5 hours following a scheme, and then just do some 'fun playing'/experimenting on the side. Think that'll be enough to just plunge into the 'inspiration-material' while improving my technique with the practice scheme? Also, what songs did you start out with when you were at that level? Perhaps there's some good practice material amongst them.

Yeah that sounds good man. As cliché as it sounds the main part (for me at least) is to have fun. When I started I just learned chords for some simple songs that I liked and continued from there. Can only remeber a few, I do remember learning the solo for Powerslave by Iron Maiden, also the Sweet Child O' Mine solo and Impulse by An Endless Sporadic. I found those fun to play, but I would recommend finding a song that you like, it makes it a lot easier and more fun in my opinion.

>>
>>73470751
Thanks a lot for the helpful feedback, I'm trying to learn transcribing by ear, so perhaps I can get to work on slowing down some songs I like and gradually speeding them up, along with learning easier step-in songs. The Sweet Child O' Mine solo might be a good starting point as well!

>>73470781
I'll be checking that technique out as well! Thanks!
>>
>>73470889
Intervals aren't a technique. Its the basis of all music, even those that do not fall under the umbrella of "Western music".
Put simply. An interval is the distance between two notes. And no matter what the style of music it is you listen to. It is all based upon the distance between two notes. You like math core/metal.. Then research that style of music in terms of intervals and you will see a pattern.

good morning /gg/
https://youtu.be/dfcNYjcd6NI
>>
I just started learning. I'm going to ask a really basic question, feel free to call me a faggot if you must.

I've learned about 16 basic beginner chords from justguitar. All of them are at the top of the neck using the first few bunch of frets. How do the chords translate to the rest of the neck? Do I have to use a capo if I want to play chords down there? Because some of them have open strings, so one of the notes will be in the wrong octave or whatever.
>>
>>73471525
You can transpose these 16 shapes up the neck to apply them to different notes. You fret where would be the open strings. That would require a different fingering, usually barring where the 0 fret would be.
>>

>>
>>73471525

>>
>>73471525
>>73471554
Hou also can learn how chords are formed (intervals and triads as >>73471561 mentioned) and create chord shapes and inversions yourself, though you'll most likely end up with some of these 16 standard ones
>>

I'll look into this. I wish I could practice some more right now but it's the middle of the night. It's a good feeling slowly transitioning from fumbling sausages between strings to weaving silky threads of coherent music.

set up the truss rod to fix the buzzing. basically press string at the 1st and 15th fret and there should be just a tiny little space between the string and fret, around 1mm or a bit less. might vary depending if you see a warp on the fretboard so you wanna compensate for it on the truss rod
then set bridge action to taste

>20 years old
>been playing for about 9-10 years
>only ever wanted to do solos as a young bab guitarist
>wind up sucking major ass at soloing and lead "riff" shit
>live with it and grow out of learning just sections of songs
>learn basic chord shapes and how to work with thirds and fifths across the fretboard
>become rhythm guitarist and vocalist
>now a chord-machine
>still fucking terrible with bends, vibrato, and all those other techniques people use when doing solos or lead stuff
>hey I'm a decent rhythm dude at least
>>
>>73479432

>buy guitar
>start playing
>be shit at it
>enjoy it anyway and I keep playing
>>

I mean, if you're a working guitarist you'll be playing rhythm or comping 90% of the time so that's a pretty good foundation to have. Most bands want a good rhythm guitarist who compliments the other members, not some noodler who tries to take the spotlight when he's not supposed to.

Also, bends are overrated desu
>>

Leads are often a pita, whee whee whee noise/fx on every song

Give me chords against my bass with a good rhythm player and its sweet.
>>
So How would one put their guitar through a synth and use it to make effects
What kind of synth would I need?
Do I need an audio interface? If so I have access to one
Pls dont lynch im just a poor retard who likes experimenting with shit he has little knowledge about

>always expected to do solos when people figure out I'm a guitarist
>play original piece with lyrics/vocals as focus
>the reaction on people's faces when they hear a soft acoustic-folk sung performance from a long-haired meathead-lookin' dude
>>73479922
Years ago, I was told to "try and make your performance stand on it's own to please the crowd with just a guitar and voice". I mean sometimes I wish I was able to noodle up and down scales to improvise some "impressive" solo as people call it, but it's probably better to have a performance that's simple enough to impress without having to rely on how fast someone's hands can go
>>73480184
dude I'd fucking love to jam with someone who knows their stuff, but all the bass/guitar players in the ontario region I live in are metalhead-noodlers with no sense of rhythm

calm down there, kurt. you're supposed to be dead
