Has anyone else reached a point where they don't really want or need any new gear?

I have a pretty comfy setup and I was looking at a few pedals (Boss RE-20, Boss DD7, JHS Muffaletta, EQD Hoof and Way Huge Russian Pickle) and none of them really interested me to choose over my two fuzz pedals and two reverbs I bought in 2015. For amos I looked into a Princeton Reverb and Deluxe Reverb for a bit of a louder living room amp but my super champ still does the trick. >>73235874
Every note and chord is actually calculated. Its not just random notes, there's complex theory behind the curtain of every song. The songs, composed of heads and changes, lend themselves to beautiful arrangements like >>73235892 or more seriously, https://youtu.be/aWa6aChSf1w Joe Pass' arrangement. They allow any talented individual to improvise complex solos that are still connected to the theory of the past while also expressing themselves in that very moment through the song. The virtuosity required is also enormous to be able to improvise all these solos, using passing inverted chords on the fly and constantly changing modes, compared to some 16 year old schmuck with a distortion pedal playing up and down the minor pentatonic scale for the nth time.
>>
>>73236095

Should I mod my current guitar or just get a new one? I've had this SG for about 7 years, but my music tastes have moved over to the Fender/Tele sound. These mods would include:

I'm looking for a new amp preferably under $500. The fender super champ x2 looks pretty nice but I hear the distortion sounds like shit

Are there any truly good combo amps or should I just save up for a real tube? I usually just play in my bedroom so I don't want something huge either
>>
>>73238642
>but with no speaker

>>
>>73238661
Some fender amps have arguably the greatest cleans. Their not known for their gain, which is crunchy at best
>>
>>73238053
holy shit the roman meme is real
>>
>>73238661
the age old response
depends on what you want out of it/

a tube amp won't have any built in effects and if you want natural tube distortion, you're going to have to turn the volume/gain knob up high. some amps only have a volume, and most have an added gain knob. also they are LOUD. even a 1 watt tube is louder than a 10 watt solid state. you'll have to start buying tube amps when they go bad, at least once a year.

solid state is always looked down upon because "muh toan". but some of the pricier ss sound just as good as a tube.

modeling/hybrid amps have either a solid state input, and a tube output. or a tube input and solid state output. preferably go for the latter

the super champ xd is a modeling amp with built in effects, it's got a tube input and output, but it goes through a solid state dsp circuit that allows the modeling to work. and by modeling i mean it will try to sound like a certain amp for each channel.

i currently have a vibro champ xd, which is the predecessor to the super champ. and it's the exact same thing, except it's only 5 watts, which for me being a bedroom player it's all i need.

any more questions?
>>
>>73238955
>preferably go for the latter
>no powertube saturation
id rather have the sound ova solidstate preamp distortion coloured with power tubes
>>
>>73238955

>>
>>73238582
>chorus over phaser

In al seriousness, the only truly essential is a tunner and a one pedal with buffer if all your pedals are true bypass.
That set up you posted was mine over 5 or so years, you can do lots of cool things with that.
>>
>>73238992
like i said
>depends on what you want out of it

i prefer a clean tone with a bit of some grit.

>>73239105
what breakup?
if i go to the first channel which is a tweed amp style, it won't break. it stays clean up to about 8 on the gain knob. even then it doesn't have that saturation you'd look for, but mixed with my ocd pedal it's bretty gud

if i go to 7 which is an early vox type of sound, yeah it breaks up at around 4 on the gain knob, after that it doesn't sound too good. at least not to me. you gotta select a channel designed to be in overdrive/distortion. because even if you turn the gain down to 2, it's still pretty crunchy
>>
>>73239273
so I'm assuming that the clean is 100% tube then right? so could i just run a fuzzbox through it and get a decent sound?

Johnny Marr's tone on still ill is one of my favorites to give you an idea of what I'm looking for

is it ok to change the vocal melody to the 5th or falsetto if i cant reach the original notes
>>
>>73239304
supposedly it is, but i have no way of testing it, nor is it really a concern.

yes it's very pedal friendly and you can stack pedals on it

i'm not a huge fan of johnny marr, and but i've just discovered him and the smiths, so i couldn't really tell you what you need to get his tone.

so long as you stay in a clean channel, pedals are fine. i've tried going to channel 13 which is supposed to be a metal sound, but it doesn't take pedals too well, it's all mushy. or if you get into a saturated channel, like 7 and keep the gain less than 5, it's favorable. at least this is what my settings are to my liking

my vibrochamp xd cost me about $180 new when i found it. other than a resistor replaced, it hasn't failed me at all. i think it's a great amp for someone like me, a bedroom player.

as far as i know, the super champ is just a bigger vibrochamp with 2 channels. go ahead and try it. i've seen the little amps vox is putting out, and they don't have the sound i want, the mids are too high, the treble is kinda flat, and there's not enough bass/low end to them. i still think the ac15 is their best amp, but i'd go with the ac10 for more practicality in terms of where i'm playing.

blackstar has great amps, you should check them out if you can, not to compare them to fenders, but to see what you can get out of them.

other amps need not apply since they are either too boutique, custom made for a certain artist, or too plain to stand out
like marshall for example, they are too defined and you don't really get anything new out of them, i think that's why all marshall players just crank them into overdrive/distortion, same goes with orange

A few questions;

Is epiphone bad, or is it just a meme? They seem to have generally positive reviews, but everyone here seems to hate them.

Can the 1/4 headphone jack on a line6 be used as a lineout and plugged into a cab?

Why does my guitar with active pickups sound bleh in my SS amp, but sounds amazing in my line6? My guitar with passive pickups sounds so much more rich and full in my SS amp. And that's with the stock pickups.
>>
>>73239928

>is epiphone bad
Not at all. I had a g400 worn cherry and I loved it. It needed a hella setup, and some other minor work, but it was an excellent guitar for the price. I'd buy one all over again.

>using the headphone jack as a lineout
Yes. The line6 headphone jack is also made to be used for going straight into a computer for recording.

>why do active pickups sound like shit in a SS amp but my passive guitar sounds good
Not sure. Some Amps just respond to some signals better I guess.

Epiphones are hit or miss. Really just depends on the price, since any company in relation to Gibson tends to inflate their prices like hell. They're good, but sometimes not for the money.

As far as I know, plugging a cab into a headphone jack is not a wise decision. Just get rid of the trashcan that is the Line 6 and find a really good used amp head + cab.

The compression in the active pickups plus the compression on your SS amp is likely the issue. Try messing around with the EQ, since no two guitars (especially active vs passive) will ever sound the same. However, I cannot trust a word you say in regards to tone considering you think a sound coming from a Line 6 is "amazing."
>>
beginner- intermediate level bass player here
what is the best bass for the price
I was thinking about getting a standard fender jazz bass but i want to try and shy away from being too basic
>>
>>73240381
Depends on play-ability. If the action is good, if the intonation is right, and it holds its tuning, go for it.
>>
>>73240546
Get a PJ bass, but it doesn't have to be a Fender. PJ's are very versatile and can be had for quite cheap depending on the make/model.
>>
>>73240579
anything specific you would recommend?
I have a Yamaha RBX250 but it doesn't sound the best and i would like something better
>>
>>73240446
>cannot trust a word you say in regards to tone.

It's not even about the tone. The guitar with the actives just has no punch or anything no matter what I seem to do in the SS. It's just sounds very lackluster, while the passives fill the room with a full sound. Clean through the SS amp is very nice and responsive, and bassy but anything on the distorted channel just falls short on the actives.

The line 6 seems to respond to the active guitar better.
>>
>>73240257
>Is epiphone bad, or is it just a meme? They seem to have generally positive reviews, but everyone here seems to hate them.
they are ok, it's just a meme to hate everything that isn't cut out and plastered together.

>Can the 1/4 headphone jack on a line6 be used as a lineout and plugged into a cab?
uh, no. they have specific cables for a reason, look into it

>Why does my guitar with active pickups sound bleh in my SS amp, but sounds amazing in my line6? My guitar with passive pickups sounds so much more rich and full in my SS amp. And that's with the stock pickup
active pickups have a flat eq compared to passive pickups, which work for some things and not others. that's why players that use high gain use them. but at the same time, passive pickups. have a defined sound, especially high output pickups.

>>73240278
good luck

>>73240381
hell no, ask $50 or just walk away

no m8, fender p and j basses are standards, not basic same with stratocasters, every player has gone through one at least once in their lifetime
>>
>>73240642
I had an ibanez gsg200 awesome for the price. I miss it.
>>
>>73240692
probably because the line 6 is digital and just processes a digital audio signal so the impedance and other physical aspects of the signal dont affect the sound
>>
>>73240642
You can check these out. ESP basses have very comfortable necks and the Squier is a cheap and simple PJ bass at heart.

Hey guys, I've been playing guitar for awhile now, and I'm interested in learning more about gear/equipment. I know the basics about how it works but I want to start learning how certain sounds are made and how one amp compares to another. Whats a good place to start for that kind of stuff?
>>
>>73240797
Yeah, pretty good for cheap guitars
>>
>>73240409
if youre still here, play outside the (pentatonic) box, and leave some space between runs/licks. no one like a solo thats the equivalent of a run off sentence.
>>
should I buy a gypsy jazz pick for my normal acoustic?

Go on YouTube and watch gear review videos or custom gear building videos. That should help, and you always have the option to go to local stores and just play stuff and ask reps what the specs on the gear are.

How is this for babbys first distortion pedal? Any reccommendations for babbys first chorus/phaser or delay/reverb?
>>
>>73241081
Look up knobs on youtube, really indepth and doesnt play blues licks for every pedal.
>>
>>73241060
>>73241081
While Rob Chapman is great for gear demos and stuff, he also has a history of scheming and lying. He did a negative review of the Mesa cab clone, deleted the video, then suddenly posted a positive review on it after Mesa saw the first review. H eblatantly lied to his viewers and tried to cover it up so he didn't lose money. Also his Chapman guitars suck. I own a Ghost Fret and it's the most overhyped piece of trash I've ever bought. Makes the $5,000 Gibsons look reasonably priced for what you get.
>>
>>73240409
You aren't always playing in time with the music or bending to the right pitch, which made it hard to listen to. Tap your foot with the beat. Synch your playing with your foot. Play the note you are bending to then bend to that note. Finally, steal some more licks for variety.
>>
>>73235678
That might just be a rack mount pre-amp without a power section
>>
>>73241086
Idk about the MXR, but I will personally vouch for the TC Electronic Mojo Mojo and the EHX Soul Food as great OD pedals that are both very reasonably priced.
>>
Whats the most versatile guitar? I like deathrock, hardcore punk, blues/doom/black and classic heavy metal
>>
>>73241175
Thanks.

I'm not really too concerned with opinions on the quality of gear, more just info on the technical side of things, what they do and how they work, and how they compare to other pieces of gear (eg solid state amps vs tube amp, or fuzz pedal vs overdrive) so I can let my own ear be the judge.
>>

>Baby first phaser/chorus/
It depends, you want some straight forwards pedals without the hassle of lots of knobs and features that you aren't going tu use? You can grab a used EHX small stone/clone for about 60/70 bucks? You want more features and more control over the effect? Go with a boss ph-3/ce-5 or the toneprint series of tc electronics (don't remember the name of the pedals right now)
>Delay
Analog or digital? If you want a "pure" analog, the mxr carbon copy, but forget about tap tempo or other features. If you want the digital sound, a boss dd7 should do. And if you want something in the middle (digital with analog simulation, lots of features and affordable) a digitech obscura or a tc electronics flashback. I have the digitech and the only complain that i have is the access to the tap tempo mode, it would have been better that they put it in a separate switch. My bandmate has the flashback and you can do lots of shit with the toneprint feature.
>Reverb
The only reverb that matters is the rv-5/6 by Boss. Tried the digitech polara and tc electronics hall of fame and didn't convince me. Also, run away from the EHX holy grail. Pure shit by such a cool company

not him either but ill share too. I'm 26, I stopped playing for a couple of years from 23-to about a year ago. I was in school trying to get a music degree and was also in the classical program which added to the stress. my juries were fucking terrible for like 3 semesters straight and I went through a period of the yips where I just couldn't pull it together so right before I transferred I stopped. no theory, no ear training, 6+ hours a day of practice to nothing. I changed my major to history and was set on being a teacher. a month after I transferred my dad got sick and ended up passing away. I came home and didn't know what to do with myself. It took me a long while to realize that turning my back on what I wanted to do my whole life really was not the right thing to do, a break was necessary but quitting altogether was wrong, not just because it what I wanted career wise but ultimately it makes me happier than anything. so like>>73241915 I just don't care anymore. I'd rather die trying this now then ever stop, even if nothing ever happens.

I also use a 5mm Dunlop Primetone (the older black ones) regularly. Great bevel, it slides right off the strings quickly and quietly. I own an older model of the ESP LTD PT-4. The strings can run through the bridge or through the body. I know Babicz makes bridges like that.

waddyamean the synthwah is super underrated have you ever even used it
>>
>>73248024
>>73241086
Rat is sweet, but can be very harsh. That said, most distortions like the ds1 sound like ass. If rat is too agressive get some kind of klone like the soul food. Some kind of higher gain overdrive is nice too.

>>73255956
Dod envelope filter is better.
>>
>>73256083
dod envelope filter doesn't do most of the things a synthwah can
>>
>>73256112
But it sounds good which is more important.
>>
>>73256121
so does the synthwah
