First for filthy

Guitar newfag, started four days ago and still mincing my way through Justin Guitar's three chord arrangement for Three Little Birds. Getting better every time at least and my left fingers are quickly developing calluses. I play no other instruments.

With daily practice how long should I wait for switching to acoustic guitar? I'm using my mum's old Giannini classical guitar (pic related), it's about 35 - 40 years old and actually still has a beautiful sound after I restrung it yesterday. My main reason for playing is that I want to play Bob Dylan songs though and I've heard steel string would be much better for this. Is three months learning on the classical guitar realistic, then later switching to a mid-range steel string? I must emphasise the guitar does sound good, with inflation it would have cost about £500 these days.

Also can anyone recommend any good beginners song books? Ideally 60s and 70s songs only.
>>
>>73132741

Switch whenever you want, there's no real time frame and you've already developed some callouses so steel strings won't be that bad if you stick with it. Everyone starts at a different spot, especially since acoustics have the highest action and steel strings are arguably the toughest for newbies to fret.

Quick questions from a beginner:

trying to get into the void tone or maybe even something close to dragonaught using a yamaha high gain amp with an esp ltd mh1000qmnt. Am I better off treble boosting the amp distortion or should I get a pedal like the sabra cadabra that has a treble boost with distortion/drive? Help am stupid.
>>
>Wow, anon, you play guitar? Play us a songggg!!

What do you do? Cough up Mom's spaghetti, or step up to the plate? Personally, I learned a few songs explicitly for this purpose. I have to choose songs that aren't too high to sing since my voice cracks if I go too high. Go-to songs are Just The Two of Us and Rainy Night in Georgia.

Two questions
First is how do people feel about bassists who don't slap? I've always hated the sound of slap bass so I've never put any effort into learning it.
Second question is should I buy one of those books that have all the scales and chords in those scales? Right now whenever I learn a new scale I usually write down where all the notes are and what chords are made but I usually throw away or lose that piece of paper so I assume having a book with all the scales would be much easier.
>>
>>73133163
yeah there's plenty of stuff out there. i'd just watch some pgs demos and try some if you can
>>
>>73133202

>>
>>73133202
>First is how do people feel about bassists who don't slap?
It's always useful to know a couple slap licks, sometimes it can make or break a bass line.
>should I buy one of those books that have all the scales and chords in those scales
You can find that for free online mate.
>>
>>73133207
Thanks again
>>
>>73133202
there's tons of players and styles that don't incorporate slap, but it can be fun unless it's in every damn song. buy a book or just print it off and make a binder. i have one with all the songs i have to do and different pedal set ups and notes within
>>
>>73133225
>>73133202
Well-rounded bass player here. I can slap, play fingerstyle, and play with a pick equally well. I know that slap isn't used in most music, but it's fun as shit. I'm also actually good at slap. You're not allowed to hate on slap unless you can actually do it. People hate what they don't understand.
>>
>>73133366
i don't play bass, most of the time when i hear a bassist slapping it doesn't fit and is completely obnoxious

good for you, anon. sabbath is GOAT tone.

>pic related
if you can get your hands on one. they were made in limited number.

analog man beano boost gets close to tony's original dallas rangemaster sound with a half-cocked wah pedal and a little reverb can get you really close. tony always multitracked his guitar.

earthquake has the speaker cranker.

reverb has castledine electronics the wizard pedal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOQZhsECVIc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dNyNZyY5rw

cheapest alternative is electro harmonix screaming bird treble booster, mxr micro amp or a dod 410 bifet boost.

catalinbread naga viper and catalinbread sabbra cadabra to my ear their has more distortion if that's what you want but both very good pedals.

tony has said
>I don’t have it full up. I have the drive up to about 7 and the master volume up to about 7, too. The other controls – the tone controls – are quite responsive, so they’re set about halfway. I used to turn everything full up years ago, on the original amplifiers, and I used to use a treble booster to drive the input. I’d turn everything full up and turn the middle off. Now I have that treble booster built in to the amp.

the orange two stroke eq boost is by far the best deal you get a sick eq and a boost. look it up.

but like said >>73133154 you got to push the amp and if you can't get there because of whatever reason just boost it.

and it always come down to how you play since its all in the hands so here.
http://www.guitarplayer.com/lessons/1014/10-things-youve-gotta-do-to-play-like-tony-iommi/12208

tony is known for his laney but he's used marshall and mesa. those british amps have more mid sound. if you can't get that sound maybe a rowin lef-324 flexion might help since it simulates a plexi.

another versatile and cheap option for distortion is dod gunslinger. it's a mofet pedal and you can get loads of sounds, very responsive. a big muff or a little big muff would do the job.
>>
>>73133153
This. Blackbird or, no joke, Wonderwall. Wonderwall at least gets a laugh because they know the cliche. But I've only been asked to play my guitar once.
>>
>>73133426
>>73133396y
You know, there's regular slap riffs, too. It's just octaves.
>>
>>73133632
what's hilarious is that bassline is on a keyboard
>>
>>73133636
my part 2

>big muff or a little big muff would do the job.
i know tony never used a fuzz pedal so if you want to keep things pure then rely on the treble boost for your distortion. humbuckers are a must and i would even say to buy his signature pickups more than anything else as your first priority. ride that bridge humbucker.

if you want to experiment with pedals (which we all like to do) then solidgold fx formula 76 has a nice vintage fuzz.

a tip for when you do get a treble boost would be rolling down all the bass on your amp and max out the middle, treble and presence.

tony on the scooped tone
>Certainly for chords. For me, that thin sound doesn't really work. It works great for a lot of the widdly-diddly players, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I have to have more of a fatter sound. I just hear it in my head. I can play faster stuff and cleaner stuff with that thinner sound. It's like with a wah-wah when you put it on halfway, you get that sound where you feel like you can play anything. The sound I tend to use, I think of how the band has got to sound and I try to make it fuller.

>When I lived in Cumberland, when we did the Mythology thing [Iommi's earlier band], there was a guy up there and I used to use his treble booster called a [Dallas] Rangemaster to give my sound a bit more 'oomph'. A guy from another band up there said, 'I can make that sound better for you'. So he took it off me and brought it back the next day. I don't know what he did to it, but it was really good. I used that treble booster on all the early Sabbath albums and put it into the Laney because it boosted the input and gave it the overdrive I was looking for, which amps in the early days didn't have.

tony has also used a boss oc-2 super octave. a oc-3 is also a good enough update to use.

you can also use ibanez tubescreamers for your solos and the mini can save you from any major dents in your wallet.

Since this is a one of a kind 325, I'm unsure if the neck is exactly like other 325's. The neck is, probably, most similar to the c58 series.

In my opinion, the neck has a fantastic balance between the scale and how chunky it is. However, I have slender fingers which makes it easier for me to play short scale guitars, so I might not be the best person to ask.
>>
>>73134170
What kind of person buys a Ric? What's the appeal? Looks? They look like old relics. Not vintage, just anachronistic. Playability? Never played one that even felt halfway decent. The basses sound alright, like tubby Jazz Basses, but the guitars just have those weak, jangly single coils. Hi-gain my ass. I know you're not buying them because they're a good value. What is it? I guess maybe if you listened to a lot of music played on Ric's, which admittedly I don't.

I'm not falling for the meme.

there's nothing wrong with either but unless you have a background in traditional sheet music, trying to learn both guitar and how to read clef will be a challenge. Not a whole lot to tabs man, it's just the number of the fret and the inlays can help you train your eyes and fingers to find it faster. Don't worry about all the stupid little tab nuances, like bends and h/o, p/o, just ease into it.

Experiment with different slides. I know at this point you've probably got a favourite that's pretty broken in, but the different materials react differently with an electric's pickups, so you may end up favouring metal over glass/ceramic.
Heavier strings is obviously good. I'd slap a set of 12s on for Open G, but your mileage may vary. A metal plectrum works well with all this, but it's not for everyone.
If you've got a strat/like guitar, set the pickup selector between bridge and middle.
If it's a les paul or anything else with a HH setup, just set it in the middle.

Turn the volume and gain on your amp up pretty high, and back the volume knob on the guitar off until you hit the sweet spot. Experiment with your tone knob to take the edge off a little. You only want to switch to the bridge pickup when you're going for the real howls.

For overdrive, i'd go for the Ibanez Tube Screamer pedal. It never really fails.
>>
I did a potentially dumb thing

I had a friend build me a kickass power supply for my pedalboard with almost 2A of power, but it's in a plastic case. I glued velcro onto it and velcro'd it to my pedalboard.

The power supply, like any other, gets a bit warm when its used.. kinda worried about it melting the glue under it and causing a leakage onto it.

Hi, guys. I have a DOD 250 as my only pedal. Looking to evolve my bass sound just a tad bit now that I got some cash to splash around.

As you can tell from my 250, I love Al Cisnero's tone but looking to add some more dirt to get something heavier.

My question is, what's a good pedal to stack my 250 with?

Recommend anything like fuzz, distortion, boost or even another overdrive.

Here's my petalboard. Who is my favorite guitarist?
>>
>>73141938
Bumping with another observation for my blog.

I love Muffs especially the Russian variants. EHX has the Bass Big Muff and Wren & Cuff has the Tall Font Russian, both sound sick but that Muff signature tone is too compressed for my liking. I'm trying to sound big. Cranked loud overdriven amp type loud.

I'm looking at volume pedals and boosters to help me achieve that loud driven amp sound even by artificial means since I can't crank a wall of SVTs like Al can. This led me to find EQD's Acapulco Gold. Anyone like this thing?

For my fuzz option, I'm digging their Dirt Transmitter, Bellows and their new Erupter. The Erupter can sound too sputtery or splat type fuzz almost Fuzz Master General type of crazy Japanese fuzz levels. In the context of my band, I don't know if this sound would working in my band mix.

The Dod Carcosa seems to cover every type of fuzz imaginable. I think it can even handle the Mountainking Electronics Megalith sound Al uses in Shrinebuilder.

But which one will sound great on bass with my 250?

Nice choice dude. I've been thinking of buying a non-reverse firebird for a while, but I have to sell some shit first have too many guitars.
>>
>>73146675
The setup and general quality is outstanding, but definitely try before you buy; Firebird necks are way out left, which strongly encourages you to play the high frets and strum near the bridge. I suspect it's a love/hate kind of thing. Not suitable for cowboy chords unless you have long arms. I do wonder what playing a Thunderbird must be like.

Also I would add that Gibson's 'G-FORCE' auto-tuner thing does indeed work well and fast for tune-ups, but is a little fussy when changing tunings. Despite that, it's incredibly convenient.

Lastly, the pickups are fucking ridiculously hot. You may like this, you may not.

For me: 9/10 "no ragrets", but check out the quirks before you personally buy one.

I have the Tera Echo they made as their 100th pedal for their anniversary, and it's pretty shit, can only really do one sound well, and you may as well just use a reverb instead. Bought it for cheap though, so hopefully I'll be able to resell it for more, or it reaches slow gear status.

You can hold the pick with the first few joints of your pinky and ring finger, leaving your first three fingers for fingerstyle. If you just want to slap with your thumb you can use the middle and index finger to hold it too (either between the joints or between the fingers themselves), might be easier. Or get a mic stand with pick holders, toss the pick into the audience and grab a new one.

What does it do? Fade in your notes?

>can only do one sound well
Thats like 95% of standalone pedals anon.
>muh phase 90 can only sound like a phase 90
>>
>>73155119
I have 6 now, but only run 2-3 at a time on my board. Honestly, I've never really played one that wasnt at least fun to goof around with.

>Is she popular?
No, I don't think she's all that popular. There's no demos or photos from owners of the guitar on the web, so I feel that they don't sell too many. I thought about selling it, but I needed a HH guitar (more solid feeling one that isn't my ibanez S), and it's pretty unique looking and plays better than almost every guitar I've played.

Do you mean there is a hump in the fretboard rather than a dip? You want a small amount of relief, but NEVER a hump. Often times you'll have to loosen the truss rod, put some heavier strings on, and hope it straightens. There's some things you can do with clamps too to try and bend the neck back, but you'd have to read up online or youtube that.

>>73154103
Is that the only problem with it? If so, I sure as hell wouldn't go through all of that...
Reminds me, a relative of mine got one of those Gibson LP faded models about a year ago. Just recently noticed that a single tiny screw is missing from one of the tuners (each has 2). No hole tapped or anything.

No, it's really not. And phase 90 is cherry picking to the extreme
With the Tera Echo, there's plenty of range and you could get a ton of different sounds by adjusting the controls, but there's really only one usable one. Move one knob a bit and you get extreme endless feedback or farty laser sounds.

>put on heavier strings

That will pull the neck forwards. I need it to be pulled backwards. Sadly there is little info on the net about up bows.

Time for a new guitar, baka. It was Gio anyway.

>Time for a new guitar, baka. It was Gio anyway.
Gios are bloody unmaintainable, the wood is too shitty for such thin necks.
>>
>>73155807
Sounds like you're cherry picking yourself bub.

>>73155388
yeah it basically cuts off the attack of your notes

Oh, so just tighten the truss rod ("straighten neck" in picture)...that's exactly what they're for. They straighten the neck and "fight" the string tension. Just do about an 1/8 to 1/4 of a full turn, and then measure/feel the neck relief. Repeat until satisfied. Truss rods are often ignored and they just sit loosely, doing nothing. They need some tension on them for a straighter neck.

I figured you meant it was bowing the wrong way, as that is a more difficult to fix problem, and most people already know about truss rod adjustments.

Remember to let it settle overnight after each 1/8 turn.

currently have an ibanez gio i got when i was 14 but i need one with a wider neck i think.

Where can I purchase a Staytrem in the US? I don't want to import duties from Bongland.

The red line is strings and the black line is the neck.

I'm not making any large assumptions. There are pedals that have a lot of useful range and there are pedals without.

Have about 1000-1200$ to spend on a new guitar. I am wanting something with a smaller neck. I have an SG, but want something a little different.

What can you suggest?
