spoken like a true pleb. it's only boring if you fucking play root notes

punk bands used it shittily and post punk bands realized that it could be used in a great way

but i mean jazz and prog and pop bands have been using bass in a perfect way forever

fucking even the strokes got it right. bassline on is this it is the most interesting part of the whole song

Root notes don't deserve the hate they get. Sure it may not be flashy, but that shit in the right parts can make a song solid as fuck. Just make sure you're not the bassist so you can do the fun stuff

Warmoth neck, quartersawn maple, dark indian rosewood fingerboard, 10-16 compound radius with the biggest stainless steel frets they do.

Body from a US Standard with pickups by Bare Knuckle, The Creamery and Fender, custom wiring gives Strat inbetween sounds in position 2+4 but bridge + neck in position 3.

I would love to take over Rickenbacker. I'd release far-eastern made budget versions of the 4003 bass and flood the market with them. Then stop making guitars entirely and just make basses but with proper electronics, truss rods that work like Fender truss rods, pickups strong enough to actually drive a fucking amp, fretwire that doesn't rub off the first time you fret a note and a host of other improvements.

I got relegated to bass because I owned a bass setup for my home recordings and when my band found that out the drummer recruited his best friend who acts like Billie Joe Armstrong and the Frontman for Sum 41 but doesn't commit because he gets "stage anxiety" and refers to notes as "1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th frets." Whenever we improvise jam he just plays the open E chord on his freeze pedal as he checks his phone. Im so glad I'm leaving these guys next month, they started talking about being a cover band for neighborhood block parties because it "pays well"

>>72988736
A trap
>>
>>72988836
Thing with active preamps is, if you've got a noisy signal going into the preamp then it'll quite happily amplify that noise into a louder noise.

Shield all the cavities, connect all the shielding tape to the ground of the jack. Because if you don't ground the tape then you might as well not bother shielding the guitar.

So I want to start learning guitar, what do I need to do?
What is a good guitar for a beginner to buy, that's also cheap?
>>
>>72989325

Hard way

>acoustic
>12 bar blues
>folk
>60s singer songwriter
>classical pieces

Easy way

>electric
>punk
>grunge
>rock
>metal

In that order.

Buy a beginners "my first guitar" songbook.

No.
Genres have nothing to do with difficulty, OSDM or thrash metal are baby tier difficulty and completely not comparable to classical pieces.

Also where's jazz or funk ? Why not blues on electric ?

I could go on but the point's that it's not a very good list.

Transcribe. The real secret it to start being able to hear all the note of a harmony moving fast through jazz changes. So many different things come together to be able to hear jazz changes I think just playing through the changes of a jazz song you transcribed the harmony to in all keys is the first step. I personally I have been trying to sing arpeggios through changes to internalize sounds but at the end of the day the only skill that matters is that you can play what you hear as I usually just say fuck it and do that balls to the walls.
>>

Listen to a lot of prog, first of all. Except Dream Theater, don't listen to them. A lot of modern prog can be traced back to some of King Crimson's early work, so they're a great place to start because the precedent they set for prog music is still very much present in the works of bands like The Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree, and Mastodon.

Conventions of prog rock include:
Unusual or odd-meter time signatures
Unconventional song structures (for example, Coheed & Cambria's use of terminally climactic form)
Emphasis on technical ability with any given instrument in the ensemble

Generally prog rock/metal is fairly theory-oriented so brushing up on some basic to intermediate theory would be helpful: you should at least know your modes, seventh chords, and general diatonic theory to help you with songwriting/composition.

Source: I play guitar and keys in a prog rock band and also just listen to a lot of prog because I'm a gigantic nerd.

who's in Manchester now, hasn't been blown up and wants a FREE Sound City 120 Watt valve head? it's sat here taking up space and gathering dust and I can't ebay it because it weighs a ton and no one will pay shipping on it. so yeah, FREE valve amp with six original 1970s Mullard EL34 tubes in the back, give me a shout if you're in driving distance of Stockport.
>>
>>72998762
Is this some kind of scam bullshit? If you don't care about money, you could still make some on it. Just call music store near by and say you can sell this shit to them for like third of the price. Or just put on some local buy/sell website type of thing. Somebody will pick it up.
>>
>>72998810
No scam, I only paid £60 from Johnny Roadhouse years ago. Like, 25 years ago. It's got dried out filter caps so it could use a service from an amp tech so it's not got any resale value. I really just want it gone, it's a pretty good amp for someone looking for a loud amp to gig with.
>>
>>72998762
You still haven't got rid of it? Honestly, just take it to a music store brudda.

>how much will you give me for this
>about tree fiddy
>ugh, i was thinking more around tree fiddy 5
>most i can do is tree fiddy 3
>i can make that work

Even 40 bucks is better than zilch
>>
>>72998840
I could do that but it's a pain in the arse lugging it there then having them offer me peanuts for it. Plus it's almost too heavy to move, the chassis is welded steel and the transformers are frickin huge. I'd rather give it away to encourage a young guitar player to get gigging. If someone had given me a massive valve amp when I was starting out then I'd be well chuffed.
>>
>>72998831
Sound City are damn good amps. Only because it needs some service doesn't make it lose all resell value. Anyway, if this this for real it's a really nice gesture on your side. Just hope if somebody gets it for free they will enjoy using it, not make a good buck on somebodies good will. Just saying. You can sell that thing without lifting your ass off the couch.
>>
>>72998831
I can't find any info on the head. FedEx has a rate calculator for international shipping, but since I can't find any info on the head I can't get something accurate. If shipping to Detroit, MI USA is relatively reasonable I think we can figure something out. I'm a wannabe amp tech so replacing filter caps will be cake, as I'm sure the conversion of mains will be too.
>>
>>72998864
http://soundcitysite.com/photo_page_6.htm

Built like a tank. In fact you could throw this amp at a tank and stop it dead in its tracks.

>>72998854
Seriously, I've advertised it and there's no takers. Everyone wants smaller portable amps or bedroom amps, this thing's a dinosaur. I'd be happier giving it away to someone who might use it.
>>
>>72998864
You can find few of them on reverb. They go for about thousand USD and up. These prices can be slightly exaggerated by people selling them, especially considering it's an old amp out of production. Hard to put a price on that kind of stuff.
>>
>>72998854
Yeah, I see what you mean. You could probably replace the caps yourself. Is it turret/eyelet board or pcb? If the former then it will be cake. You could do it with a cheap soldering iron. It might sound weird, but here in the states this time of year is when the high schools start hosting musical performances, I played for like 6 of them in highschool. Maybe check for something like that if you don't mind doing a littke footwork.

If you want to do a good deed disregard this >>72998864 I'm an amp hoarder, I have like 7 nice amps already. I don't need help with that.
>>
>>72998864
>I can't find any info on the head.

This conveys some of the sense of how fucking loud these amps are.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pefc49mFH7k
>>
>>72998901
It's all point to point wired inside. I had to change one valve base a while ago after it decided to arc over so I could replace the caps but I've got a million other electronics projects on and none of those are getting finished so this amp is really bottom of a deep pile.
>>
>>72998910
That's pretty sweet, i honestly like the way that sounds too. Is yours the L120? Trying to find dimensions and weight.
>>
>>72998949
Yes, same amp as the one in that video and the same gut-wrenching eardrum-shattering wall of sound from it. The head's a bit bigger than a modern Marshall. And about twice the weight.
>>
>>72998925
I know exactly what you mean brother, i got 5 pedal builds set ready to start, and my buddy wants me to build a tweed deluxe for him among several repairs i got lined up. Just got into a new house and haven't had the chance to build a work bench yet.
>>
>>72998965
I'll be honest, part of the reason I haven't done the caps is because I'm terrified of the HT supply on this amp. Marshalls are scary with 550V or so but I think this thing uses 800V DC and that's more than likely to stop your heart if you make a mistake.
>>
>>72998957
Also, that amp is dialled all the way up and it's just doing a fairly gentle overdrive. That's the thing with Sound City amps, they have shitloads of clean headroom and they stay really clean even at gig volume. He's playing at brain damage volume there so the EL34s are breaking up beautifully, try that outside of a rehearsal room and you'd have the cops round.

That's weird, I've imported loads of stuff into the UK without all those documents. And yeah, I really can't ship this thing anywhere, it's difficult enough shifting it into the back of a van. Plus all those ancient Mullard tubes would probably just be so much broken glass by the time it arrives.

Its the worst sounding black face amp and the worst sounding distortion amp. Get an ampeg VL-503 or Fender Super Sonic 22 instead.

The ampeg is blackface channel 1, Mark IIc+ channel 2, and high gain marshal channel 3. Its goat.

The Super sonic is a Deluxe reverb with 2 gain drives so you can get a british marshall tone or a California mesa tone.

Much much better amps.

Yeah honestly I wouldn't even be considering it but I heard a comparison between the CP and the J Ma and I genuinely couldn't tell the difference. I'll probably just head over to my local shop for like the third time this week to try it out and see for myself.

You forgot Fender and Charvel both had a brief experiment with building guitars in India. They were so bad they're off the end of that list.

>They want to play Miles Davis/Bill Evans

>Play with them, realize my guitar doesnt fit in anywhere, since the pianist does almost all the comping
>They get mad at me for being the weakest link
>I get up and leave
>realize guitar is useless and always out of place in jazz quartets/quintets
>Realize guitar doesnt belong to jazz at all
>Realize piano is superior in every aspect

This is what jazz does. Jazz destroys lives.

Not even once.

You've got to keep your comping minimal, more textural than anything, don't feel the need to stand out all the time. Some guitarists like Grant Green almost didn't comp at all. Bands like that are the easiest to be in since your comping can be ultra basic. People coming from rock are used to the guitar being a cocky instrument, up front all the time. In jazz you've got to learn to lean way back.

This album is a great lesson on comping with a piano player, listen to how sparse Jim Hall's playing is.

Hey I jam with oldfags and they want me to learn a Van Halen song, any recommendations?

I know it's meme but I'm a meme guitarist.

I recommend you stop jamming with them. And by a less autistic guitar. And develop some musical taste.

Yeah, I've been curious about those gookbergs too. Like, immediately, the input jack location throws me off since it isn't routed on the back. It's on that lower curve on bottom, which fucks the ergonomics entirely.
