Since individual neofolk threads keep dying from lack of interest, here's an umbrella thread for all things "goth" - post-industrial, regular industrial, EBM, deathrock, dark ambient, noise, postpunk, goth rock, extreme metal, martial industrial, neoclassical, darkwave, witchhouse, horrorpunk, psychobilly, ritual music, coldwave, aggrotech, power electronics, future pop, etc - all may be discussed here if they are sufficiently /dark/

Okay :^)
I must admit, I'm not up-to-date when it comes to this but I loved it and dug deep into it as a teenager. Similarly to neofolk it's defined more by lyrical content than purely musicological criteria (although mimicking horror soundtrack type music, clear vocals and LOTS of "woah woah woaaah" are typical) so there's a lot of different styles within the genre, the most clearly defined subgenre being psychobilly which mixes horrorpunk with rockabilly and is characterized by its fast-paced acoustic bass-slapping.

Obviously you should know the Misfits, both their original line-up with Glenn Danzig on vocals and their 90s reincarnation with Michale Graves on vocals:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFxwq7tgPiY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp-EiITf1YI

and here are some other groups I remember fondly, but remember that corniness is a big part of the charme and should be enjoyed unashamedly:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGiX4mcNxN8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zWRuZGtR_U

and here's some psychobilly:

>>72831387

>>72831651
holy fucking shit dude

now do neofolk
>>
>>72832171
First off, with neofolk you have to know that there are multiple "lineages", two of which date back to Death In June and Current 93. The Death In June lineage is more martial, politically revolutionary and more concerned with "apoliteia" (what exactly that is is for you to find out) and the writings of the Konservative Revolution and "fascist" occultism while the Current 93 lineage is less serious and more folksy aesthetically and concerned with all kinds of esoteric traditions. Here are two classic albums you should know, but really the discographies of both bands are mandatory, huge and rewarding:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVD8iww-cfs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsDsTxsh9V0

I am most familiar with Death In June's lineage of martial apocalyptic and apoliteic folk (which does not mean that they or any of the musicians in this field are necessarily nazis, fascists or right-wingers). Given the thematic element that is crucial to this kind of music while the only real musical criterion is reference to European musical traditions of forgotten times, many different styles of music can be encountered here although repetitive acoustic guitar strumming, martial rythms, snare or tribal drums and flutes/trumpets/synths, monotonous male vocals and wind chimes are typical. Here we go:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0FXliKdbac
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu0sI4h-Ixw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vpw8dnEp9u4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InE-xcB59EE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIdx54jQTI4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzbHvqN5RSw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0nYLDjskXo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otKSw-iCefE

German neofolk is kind of its own lineage though tied to the DI6 one. It originated in Forseti so here's another classic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th4v_KHNTME

Huge ass microgenre, this is hardly a glimpse.

That's what a pleb would say. Rome is just as apoliteic and as much of a querfront approach as Death In June, Darkwood or Art Abscon except even more well read and on another level entirely in terms of craftsmanship. Boyd Rice (NON) is just a funny idiot satanist glam nazi.
>>
>>72841917
>Implying Boyd doesn't dress like a nazi to alienate stupid people
>>
>>72841603
It's good. All of Rome's dicography is worth listening to (except for Hell Money) and their best imo is probably The Hyperion Machine. So much more mature aesthetically, no production tricks mask anything, beautiful craftsmanship and actually deals with contemporary political topics for once. Die Æsthetik der Herrschaftsfreiheit is also great.

While we're at it, here's an often overlooked highlight of Death In June's dicography: Black Whole Of Love; a (7",10", 12", CD) collection featuring four versions each of the songs Leopard flowers and Luther's Army, two versions of God's Golden Sperm and three other re-recordings of their Clouds/Symbols era. Beautiful release and all versions are absolutely dreamy.

It's also interesting to see how many degrees of separation he has from a lot of surprising artists. David Eugene Edwards from Sixteen Horsepower has taken his spot in Crime and the City Solution recently, for example. Between he and Mick Harvey every goth album from 1980 on has been STRAYA'D.
>>
>>72842085
He does but that doesn't mean that he is not also an actual nazi and a fucking idiot. Compared to the other people in this scene I mean. You don't find Boyd dropping any subtle literary references to Evola, Mohler or Proudhon, he just writes very enjoyable but banal social darwinist poetry.
>>
>>72842190
I'm more compelled to believe he isn't a Nazi or a Fascist and rather a misanthrope that likes socially conservative approaches to dealing with the ills of the world.

It's alright. The first track is the highlight. My issue with recent VS is that he's taking some really good and clean sounding atmospheres and putting generic "dancy" percussive loops over them. On older VS you'd hear some really interesting loops and more industrial sounding percussion which made it sound both energetic and interesting, but after Remember Your Black day it's just all sounded like presets to a distracting degree.

OP here,
really good to see this thread is still going.
Thanks for having me relisten my old horrorpunk folders.

Well, there's really several different styles of Goth, Bauhaus is sort of noisy and trebly and harsher sounding like The Birthday Party, while Sisters of Mercy are slower and sort of dirgey, like Joy Division.

>tfw subsequently wrote the wiki on Nekrophile

>tfw out of nowhere at record store like a month ago a reissue of Transparent which restores the complete, original track listing and their names, together with helpful booklet - this hard copy completes my collection of the label

The single best track to have been released on Nekrophile is Lashtal's "Nu, Iside". Both mixtapes are /darkfire/ as well, and really tie together certain groups which I'd already been liking based on yt recommends.

does anyone here practice or believe in any occult stuff or is it just for the aesthetics?

This picture is fairly well-known, and is the only one I recall having seen.

zoe dewitt's personal site contains some interesting background. Related act Metgumbnerbone apparently also tried copy-catting the ghoulish bone-instrument idea in the UK, were caught, and were sentenced to community service.

there's a few others on his personal site but afaik all instruments are represented in that one
>zoe dewitt's personal site contains some interesting background.
I've read through parts of it, his history of occultism in postindustrial music was particularly interesting
>Related act Metgumbnerbone apparently also tried copy-catting the ghoulish bone-instrument idea in the UK, were caught, and were sentenced to community service.
that's pretty funny. did they get any recordings of it put out or were they caught before that?

Metgumbnerbone are a rather obscure group. I realize that this statement is a banality by /dark/ standards but desu I don't know much about them apart from the fact that I quite like the "field recordings" of theirs that I've heard on youtube. If they actually succeeded to release something with human-bone noises intact, I'm not aware of it.

For context see page nine of this pdf, which basically reiterates what I just said:

http://www.zoedewitt.com/pdf/zero_kama_lecture.pdf

I do seem to remember that somewhere on the site there is a contemporaneous newspaper clipping (referred to in the pdf), let me see if I can find it.

Also: note pic related, the album art and liner notes for the lashtal tape. Again, it seems that someone has been using (human?) "bones" as musical instruments (under Michael/Zoe's influence?) The cover art is due to Dewitt again per liner notes.

The snippet from the Book of the Law at left in the picture is matched with other citations on other cassettes. The album art design was also a big thing for Dewitt.

I find it rather amazing that Dewitt has apparently never had serious trouble from the Austrian government, that s/he is willing to talk about anyway, about hir grave-robbing activities.
