This kind of tone is very common with electric guitar but I've never managed to get my small beginner's pack guitar/amp combo sounding anything like it. Do you get the smooth and fat sound by way of some effect?

No matter what I do with my amp I just get that tinny, fuzzy sound
>>
>>72528114
but that's childish idiotic shit

That's just some retarded person's blog.
If you got say, an Epiphone Les Paul and changed all the parts that are in contact with the strings, that being the bridge assembly, saddles, nut and tuners, as well as the pickups, to that of a Gibson Les Paul, it would sound the exact same as the Gibson. Wood has nothing to do with it once everything happens within a closed system. The wood does not affect the vibration of the strings because it's never in contact with the strings in any way, and it only vibrates because the parts that are in contact with the strings vibrate. Any dampening going on happens because of those parts, the saddle, bridge, nut, etc.
>>
>>72528259
Many softer metal bands have the same kind of tone on lead guitar, I just chose that video since I think it really shows what I'm talking about.

My amp goes from clean -> grating punk trash when I turn the drive knob, doesn't matter if I turn down treble and increase bass at the same time, I can't seem to get get the thicc electric sound.

Because believing that it affects tone is retarded.
I wouldn't laugh in their faces because of the specification of the body wood, however.
Maybe they just want a natural finish. And that's cool. I'd like to have something like that.
>>
>>72528662
Nah, you'd have to play around with the settings, as well as the pickup selector. In the video, it sounds like there is some sort of soft overdrive going on, I don't know. That may be a place to start.

epiphones are fucking great. throw some good pickups in there and you have a great sound. you could use that as a studio guitar if you wanted with no one who could tell a difference.

it's seriously not hard to get good sound out of a shitty guitar, especially a modded one. wood has almost nothing to do with it, you can youtube this shit people, it's not hard, there are sound comparison challenges on there that prove that fact pretty much without a doubt.

now feel and look, that's a different story. a shitty guitar is just not going to feel as good or as enjoyable to play. google the rob chapman/andertons comparison videos and they can always tell which guitars they're playing from how they feel, pretty much spot on each time. the higher end guitars just feel so much nicer to hold and play.

stop the god damned wood debate unless you're prepared to make video proof to prove your point. if you like high-end guitars that's fine, they have their benefits. if you want to justify a low-end purchase, you totally can as well, you can get great sound either way.

also fuck I'm not helping am I

I can only speak for having owned both a low-end and high-end fender strat (not anything special, just a american texas special), it's how the neck feels sliding your hand up and down with the curvature of the back of the neck, the feel of the frets and the fret board, and all of those little proportions add up.

Here's a video of a guy who compares a shitty chinese squire strat versus a custom shop high-end fender. Note that they sound identical, and the guy can play them well, but at the end of the video, he distinctly says that he felt like he was fighting the low-end and that it just didn't feel nice to play, where as the high-end felt wonderful, almost like it would play itself:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LYfaCYg4Is

Lots of videos like that on youtube, just look around. Again the chapman videos where they do comparisons of squire to fenders, or epiphones to les pauls, they can always tell the difference in terms of how they feel.

Here's the chapman video on epiphones versus les pauls, they nail them every time just based on how they feel:

>>
>>72529331
I guess I can see that. It's kind of weird, however, the last time I was looking for a new guitar, the mid-range ones felt better than the high-end ones. I really don't know what the fuck was going on there.
>>
>>72529380
You'll never need more than 6 strings. Even for metal.
>>
>>72529331
wtf the beginning, he fet job'd the fender but didn't on the squier

also they dont sound identical though, the fender is brighter and more open sounding, the squier has more muddy low mids and less treble. a good set of fender pickups would make it sound identical to the fender though

mid-ranges are completely sufficient in almost every aspect, so absolutely no shame in that, use whatever feels best. honestly you're going to get diminishing returns with the high ends anyway, they're not really worth it in terms of actual value unless you're an enthusiast or have that much money to casually blow

>>72529447

couple things go into recording guitar.

Yea depending on you amp maybe its just too shitty to emulate a driven tube amp, though some practice amps are okay at it.

Also when recording distorted guitar, less distortion than you think you need is better, because a lot of guitar parts are doubled leading to a thick sound thats not overly distorted and loses its presence. Also you're not accounting for the fact that its being played in a mix, one of the jobs of bass is to make the guitar sound a bit thicker.

That's a custom shop guitar. Even then, that's a bit steep. You could by an original 1952 Les Paul for half the price; and that has a lot more historical significance, and a better guarantee of appreciation.

Gibson has gotten way too pricey, especially the memphis division. But the upside is that the quality is a lot better than what it was 15 years ago.

I'd buy used though. Let someone else take the depreciation hit.

his vibrato, yeah, he's one of my biggest inspirations - playing few notes but giving them each impact and meaning which I find more attractive than mindless shredding (not me saying playing fast is bad but I'd rather hear someone solo over one scale with emotion and phrasing than someone solo over fifty different scales as quick as possible, not very melodic)

There's good reason for people to be pushing the "tonewood isn't real" meme. Most marketing surrounding tonewood is false and most of what people value tonewood for is also false. But it does have a small effect. The most audible of which is most noticeable when playing chords. A lighter guitar will lose dissonant upper order harmonics sooner during the sustain of a chord. Most people don't realize this because it doesn't change overall EQ. Things like "mahogany has a warmer tone," etc., are flase. But if you listen to how soon a chord "resolves" to lower order harmonics, you can hear the difference. Knowing this, you can probably tell an acrylic guitar from a lighter wooden guitar blind.

https://youtu.be/5vgwaiScrwA

Another difference is that a lighter guitar will vibrate other strings that are not being played more than a heavy guitar. This can make muting very slightly easier on a heavy bass than a light one.

As for sustain, it is true that a heavier guitar will have more sustain, however this isn't very noticeable since most of the added sustain is already very quiet. The early sustain as the note loses volume is still effectively the same.

I really have a lot more to say on the topic but 4chan is not the place. These are the basics when it comes to tonewood, hopefully you find the information useful. I want to emphasize here that misconceptions about tonewood are more commonly held beliefs than the truth. If you had to divide the tonewood debate into two camps, both sides would be wrong. But by all means, the side trying to take your money with marketing bullshit is much more wrong.

how to stop my wrist from bending this much when playing bar chords and power chords
only way to prevent it is doing them with the thumb over the neck and consequently having the hand in single-note-playing position

also how to stop my left shoulder from bending down? id guess just raising the strap or having the guitar more diagonally but it also happens when sitting
just forcefully keep the shoulders straight and get used to playing that way?

John Mayer Trio is best John Mayer
>>
>>72537712
>unmatched guitar style
>similar to Frank Black and Greg Sage
very contradicting

anyhow, he wasn't a guitarist per se. he just used the guitar to help write songs, like often most people would because the guitar is a great instrument to accompany lyrics. imagine if he played sax instead.

it's not to say he sucks, but i agree with you, it's different from anything before him
>>
>>72537971
>he just used the guitar to write songs

Pretty spot on. Cobain was a songwriter first, and a musician second. He used the guitar as an extension of himself, a tool to help him get his point across.

He had a gift for melody though, and sometimes you'd get something like "All Apologies." Kurt was mostly into punk though, so it was mostly power chords. Even then, "Smells like Teen Spirit" or "Breed" is fun to jam on.
>>
>>72538145

>>72538170
Just because it's simple doesn't mean it's generic.
>>
>>72538254
yes it does
anyone can create melodies like that by simple noodling the major scale
>>
>>72537971
It seems contradicting at first but hear me out it truly is a style of his own the only thing these three artist have in common is that they all use a simple melody to accompany their chord progressions but it's their chord progressions that are unique and their chord progressions all have influence from some form of early rock Frank Black is a mix of bossa nova and blues but Kurt's is like a mix of metal, blues, and slight classical influence. The more I play their songs the more I keep picking up on it in Scentless Apprentices the lick he plays on the high E string I think was ripped off the Beatles Helter Skelter but the riff is inverted and played backwards. I know they're not very good technical guitarist but something about these three have and their composition is crazy. Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys I'd say is the closest thing we have to a style like these three at the moment. I get so fucking jealous when I play their songs and see how simple everything is it almost hurts.
>>
>>72538299
Could you explain how to use scales to compose I'm learning them but have no idea how to properly use them I'm starting to get ideas but it's really difficult without input from another person. I've memorized my pentatonic and most of my major scale I have my G major remembered I'm also having difficulties understanding arpeggios and how those work in favor or how many there can be to use whether it's just shapes you can move around the fretboard to use as a voicing. I've always bought D'addario's because they're usually the cheapest and a known brand. Color coding system is nice too.

I've never gotten the point of obsessing over strings. I tried some slinky's a few times. Couldn't really tell the difference.

>>72539090
11's work even better imo
>>
>>72538991
not on that "all apologies" song you mentioned. the guitar and vocal melodies are pretty basic.
>>
anyone here would pay a Focusrite or UR22 interface to see nigger toe himself shitting on his hand and rub on his chest
>>
>>72539201
What's the difference in 11s and 10s I've used 11s before but only when I started playing
>>
>>72539262
the first one is thicker
>>
>>72539046
GHS boomers are my favorite but every music store i go to has them out of stock. theyre interchangeable with standard ernie ball gauges however so if youre autistic like myself and dont want to fuck with how your guitar is set up you can swap them out easily
>>
>>72539297
Yes but when playing do you feel it muddies the chord if not in drop tuning or would you say even in standard there's no difference I think it's in my head but when I play with heavier strings power chords sound really really muddy.
>>
ive actually never bought strings so
i dont know what the numbers you say mean, I just want some that is good for bending
>>
>>72539349
for bending get 9s or even 8s

but really, keep the 10s and practice bending on a acoustic with heavy strings so your fingers get strong and you can bend 10s even with just one finger
>>
>>72539349
just buy 10s for an electric and 12 for an acoustic

anything else is meme technology
>>
>>72539262
11s are the next gauge up, just a hair thicker. Sound a little fatter. If you like to play in alternate tunings on occasion but don't wan't to dedicate a guitar to drop D or whatever, thicker gauges tend to work better.

Only problem is it's a little harder to bend.
>>
>>72539326

If you're tone is muddy, it's probably not the strings.
>>
>>72539326
>>72539440
probably he had the action set very low and when he put 11s it had no space to vibrate properly
>>
>>72539440
>>72539462
Oh okay my action was a little wonky before but I've gotten it fixed that was probably it sorry
>>
>>72539506
sorry for what

>>72539520

You're being super polite for 4chan. It's fine to call us niggers; everyone does it.
>>
>>72539520
>>72539551
I'm being polite because there is mutual respect in /gg/ we're all here on the same road of improvement. I call the peasants in other threads niggers. So far it's a bretty good thread.

I don't think I have actually. What's it called? Is it the one with Andrew Cyrille Quartet?
>>
>>72539713
and 1000s of dollarydoos on pedals and never buying meme guitars this is how you become a great guitarist gibson more like gibingmeshit
>>
>>72539720
It's a guitar/bass duet with Thomas Morgan called "Small Town" just came out a couple of days ago. That Andrew Cyrille album is great too though.

If you tune down a whole step do you have to play chords differently or play songs in different area of the fretboard? I'm barely playing pls no bully
>>
>>72539825
If you haven't changed them in a while, then you might as well change all of them.
>>
>>72539949
yes youd have to play two frets (one whole step) up to get the same notes

>>
>>72539955
well my guitar is new and the e string already snapped so i'll just replace one.

maybe 4chin is right about jazzmasters being bad but i already upgraded the bridge and am gonna adda new string to sell it for less despite its upgrades is not what im trying to do
>>
>>72540055
at least you've learned a valuable lesson. never buy a meme guitar.
>>
>>72540055
Is it a squier or MIJ by any chance? I had a problem with the tremolos having sharp edges at the string hole. Try making it smooth with some sandpaper or you're just going to break a string again very soon.

stronger power chords. if you play metal, you might like 0.11s. otherwise just go 0.10s or 0.09s. you can also get mixed if you want heavier power chords and don't want to sacrifice your ability to play riffs as easily.
>>
>>72540143
Just a few things off the top of my head...
You can actually have lower action without buzzing.
More volume with acoustics and hollow bodies.
For certain styles you can play faster because the strings dont displace as much.
>>
>>72540246
>>72540230
So if I wanted to make the jump from say .9's to something like .11's or .12's what would I need to adjust on my guitar for the added tension.
>>
>>72535736
I have an AF75. I love the sound of it and the playability, though the neck shape feels a little odd to me. I still need time to get used to it.
Minor annoyance, the pickguard buzzes, i might just take off.
The pick ups are also hotter than I would like, but thats a preference, not neccessarily a bad thing.
>>
>>72540180
embarrassing
>>
>>72540285
Most likely you would have to adjust nothing.
>>
>>72540285
depends on the guitar. .12 seems a bit overkill to me, even for metal. you can feel the difference for every increment, .11 should be more than sufficient, but I haven't used .12s or even seen .12s so I wouldn't know I suppose.
