hell yehh
The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Relatively Clean Rivers - Relatively Clean Rivers
very enjoyable folk album, really forward thinking, reminds me a lot of NMH in parts in terms of approach to production and the wide breath of instruments employed, it's a shame that the guy didn't do much else because he's very talented
Haruka Nakamura - Twilight
It's pleasant enough but it doesn't really hold interest over the entire thing, sometimes the instrumentation devolves into Yiruma tier pop-classical though
Charles Sullivan - Genesis
Really good, really like this kind of jazz, not much else to say, going to listen to this some more over the coming weeks

Lol maybe one day. I'm not sure if he gets the whole social music thing. He sees me on rym and doing /daily/ charts and stuff and he just doesn't get it.
Still I've just been feeding him a bunch of /daily/ stuff any time I find something he might like. I've gotten him into forca bruta, deathconsciousness, and uneven compromise. He's still pretty entry level though he's open minded he prefers more accessible stuff. I think Pleasure strikes that balance between experimental and straight up pop sensibility which is why he likes it so much. But this is also the guy who played Jeff Rosenstocks record from last year non stop as well so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Jazz is fun. Jazz is not really a pretentious genre. It's an easy to enjoy and loveable style of music that also has many divergent ways of playing. It's main component is improvisation. I like improvisation. I love seeing how a player can go wild and show how good he is with his instrument. Not only that but also depending on the divergent style of jazz you can get many emotions and listen to them for many different occasions. Hard bop is intense and incredibly fun, cool jazz is incredibly relaxing, free jazz is a popurri of emotions and feelings. Listen to songs like Art Tatum's Tea for Two, Art Blakey's Free for All, Hank Mobley's The Dip, and then tell me you can't see why someone could enjoy it.
All that said, nobody can force you to like jazz. It's perfectly a-ok to dislike it, and really you will live a happier life just listening to the music you enjoy. Oh and you are making a meme out of yourself so you should stop

listen to more music. this is super entry level
>Pale Cocoon - 繭
>Etheral Wave, Ambient Pop
It manages to have its own unique sound, which is a plus. The hiss of static permeates every track on here, for better or worse.
...I don't know. this didn't really do much for me. Was kind of like slightly flavored water. Will have to revisit.
6/10
>Bill Evans Trio - Waltz for Debby
>Cool Jazz
The perfect album for watching a nocturnal city from high above the skyline, eating a dinner on a warm summer's night, or watching the rain fall at day's end. The clinking of silverware and conversations in the background are the perfect backing noises for the trio, as they effortlessly intertwine their sound.
The piano is pretty great, and Evans is able to easily syncopate his rhythm while remaining in harmony with LaFaro's bass. LaFaro himself gently plucks over the surface of water on My Romance. Motian drumming is quietly active, smoothly brushing over his small set of cymbals and snare.
Milestones and My Romance are my favorite tracks: the former being the quickest paced, the latter giving each player plenty of room to shine.
7/10
>Larry Young - Unity
>Post-Bop, Soul Jazz
I normally hate the jazz organ. It never felt like it could be used in a natural fashion, the notes cut off unnaturally compared to a piano's resonance, and it doesn't feel nearly as satisfying. Young is damn willing to make it work, and only somewhat do I get that annoying feeling of it overpowering the entire group's sound.
Obviously much more free-roaming than Bill Evans, Unity isn't afraid to mix itself up; the Shaw's trumpet can bends itself at will (when it's not collaborating with the tenor sax), Young's huge solo on Monk's Dream is impressive, and Elvin Jones' drumming-- holy shit. He morphs into a march by the end of Zoltan, flams and rolls his way through Monk's Dream, juggles quintuplets and septuplets on Moontrane-- what a god.
still hate the jazz organ, though.

Nice, great reviews, I'm glad you liked both those jazz albums! Unity is so tight, one of the best jazz albums I've heard... I like how it manages to be a little avant-garde compared to most organ stuff.
>>72510586
It's funny, because the last time I heard any sort of organ actively being played was in Emerson, Lake, Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery, which I didn't like at all. Really is an great album to use it successfully.
>Fishmans - Long Seasons
It's pretty good! I really enjoy Sato's androgynous vocals, and just how pleasent everything sounds.
Makes me think of a dream pop version of Echoes. That's cool!
>4.0
>R.Kelly - Trapped in the Closet
This is...something. I mean what the fuck is going on inside Kelly's head? It sounds kind of pleasant at first, but it's the same song a bajillion times, filled with big dick midgets, gangsters, and weirdest of all, bisexuals!
It becomes self-parody past 5, so it's worth a laugh.
>2.0
>Oren Ambarachi & Jim O'Rourke - Indeed
Lacks that color that is found on later Ambarachi records, and feels more like a duty in being boring as hell. Not as good as Hubris, in any way.

literally just do the single/shorter version of Long Season "Season" :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0pK3S1PM1g
Similarly, other Fishmans songs are super simple and easy to cover with just guitar. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1EIlIPTqtA
(this sounds like it could be in fuckin kingdom hearts lol)
Or just don't do it dude. No one's holding a gun to your head. You'll disappoint some strangers on the internet. Who cares?

Thanks! I still need to update it to include their new live album.

Oh no, the thing is that I really want to do it, just really swamped with school right now. I was not going to do the entire album either way, but I was gonna record drums, piano and guitar for full effect.
>>72513157
Where would the new live album be placed?
>>72513179
jeez. Godspeed man. I had a fishmans tab book at home with the chords and shit for "season" if that would be of any help but I kinda doubt it. Good luck.
>>72513198
honestly, it would probably be the one album I would put after 98.12.28, as it's presented as almost a prequel to it, and most likely people would like it more having heard 98.12.28.

2/5

What did gainsbourg and the other guy mean by those orchestral fanfares every few bars? It was a nice touch but I don't get why.

>>72515470
Viper - The Southwest Hooligan
>>72515533

Bich I'm on twelve xans
last few days sucked shit
>New Order - Low-Life
Consistently pretty good, but kind of the turning point for these guys and imo their last good release really. Enjoyable (except for the last track wew) but I'm just not 100% sold on this sound.
7
>Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster & Panaiotis - Deep Listening
"Ione" Is an amazing piece, and overall there's a lot of awesome texture here, but even though instrumentally it jumps all around, the first track "Lear" is just a chore at times. I see no reason why it has to be that length, as it doesn't really expand or add any more interesting ideas after the first 10 minutes and just goes flat. The last track is only 10 minutes but it feels like and eternity.
6
>Oppenheimer Analysis - New Mexico
Pretty neat, just not my brand of "skeletal" ya feel? I can fuck with minimal synth but idk about full "synthpop". Why did I have to listen to so much synthpop this week it's not good. Except this. This is alright.
6
>Sister Irene O'Connor - Fire of God's Love
A neat little record, with a surprising amount of passion, but certianly nothing special at all songwriting wise. There's some artificial depth added in the electronic instruments, but I don't really feel like they add much to these otherwise empty songs.
5
>New Order - Technique
Although I wasn't huge on this, I thought it was slightly better than Brotherhood. Better to do a genre I dislike well than a genre I do like poorly imo. There's some fun, dancy tracks here, but ultimately nothing I'd really come back to.
5
cont
>>72516061
>The Flaming Lips - Transmissions From the Satellite Heart
Probably one of the biggest love/hate relationships I've had with any band. I really do like The Terror, Embryonic, The Soft Bulletin...hell, even Zaireeka gets a bad rep for pretty much no reason. At times I think they make really fun, enjoyable alt rock. This early era just feels like a slightly more enjoyable or quirky Pavement. She Don't Use Jelly, Turn it On, and Slow Nerve Action are all fun, enjoyable tracks, but nothing I really fuck with anymore.
5
>New Order - Brotherhood
I hear a lot more post-punk roots here than on Low-Life, but it's just so watered down in "alternative" sounds and...idk it just rarely works at all. "Bizarre Love Triangle" Is pretty much the only thing I liked much at all. Everything else is watered down and bad.
4
>Ulver - Perdition City
Whaaaat. Shit's nuts. I love this band's debut and Shadows of the Sun is ight too, but this era of electronic/trip hop just bores me to tears I'm sorry. There's probably a lot I'm missing here and I'm sorry if I'm being unfair, but I've literally only enjoyed one trip hop album in my life. :/
4
>Flux of Pink Indians - The Flipping Hecks Treat Us Like Fricks
lol. A full-fledged anarcho-punk comedy allbum. The fact that side-B is two-and-a-half minutes is hilarious. Edgy, but not really that good at all. Chaotic, sure, but none of it feels like it serves a point other than "heh, didn't expect me to do funny scream huh ;) punk as heck". idk have fun liking it but it's bad.
3
>Cody ChesnuTT - The Headphone Masterpiece
I fucking hated this. Combining something that's generally good/okay (Soul/Neo-Soul) with something shit (Lo-fi Indie) is a terrible idea to begin with, but why in the shitting dick is it SO LONG??? It's like a slightly better Speeding Bullet to Heaven. I'm serious. Over the course of nearly 100 minutes there's maybe two okay songs. Please do not listen to this it's so bad.

>Bitch Ass Darius - Follow The Sound
Loved this mix. I had a ton of fun with the different samples and grooves and genres that this project packs. Some of the samples made me laugh out loud. I really liked the playful feel to the whole mix. Not much for me to say, listen to it.

Good morning /daily/!
I'm feeling slightly better. Gonna listen to something now. <3
Recent listens, but not recent enough for good writing.
>John Martyn - One World
Like Solid Air but with more gravelly 'bluesy' voice (not a good thing). Cool wet lazerz on a few tracks, but not much else that wasn't more interesting on Solid Air. 3.0
>Ramones - Rocket to Russia
It's early Ramones. 3.5
>Suicide - Suicide
Mmm, fuck yes. Punk songs being tortured with a car battery. This is a jump into the fucking future. Only complaint is that the non-Frankie-Teardrop songs are a bit samey. 4.0
>Brian Eno - Before and After Science
Hmm, kind of like Low + Talking Heads 77, who would've thought. My thoughts on this haven't fully gelled after the first two listens. I need to revisit the previous Eno & Roxy Music I've heard. 3.5 for now
