The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Idea:

Co won't be able to update the /daily/core chart from now on, and about half of the users on that chart rarely visit here anyways.

So I think it's high time we make a new /daily/core chart. I'd be more than willing to make the chart, and will happily add/remove albums as requested. The only two rules are

>three releases only
>you're not allowed to have the same album as anyone before you

If you've posted in the last month and you're on this chart I'll just be adding the same albums back on again, unless you want me to change it. If you're not on this I'll be happy to add you. Similarly, if you want out that's easy too.
>>
>>72429834
I'll probably just keep the same top /daily/core albums, unless people REALLY want to add something else.

"no"

>Your Infamous Harp - Prah Suomafni Ruoy
>Glitch Pop, Downtempo, D___e, N___e, Chamber Pop

A weird mix of trans and Eric's previous reccs. The small instrumentation and glitchy textures, but with a female vocalist... p sure theyre the same person

Some downtempo influences and cute synths populate the beginnings of this, but in a much more accessible place than Frisk Frugt - Den Europaiske Spejlbue. Less of a microcosm, and more of a magnifying glass: Less of a chaotic fight between coos and samples, but a willing collaboration in creating some actual groovable tunes.

Listening to English vocals (finally) does take a bit of the atmosphere out of the album and reveal the DIY parts of the album. The barer and unmastered vocals contribute to the album's world rather than detract; they acknowledge their winsome with quotes such as "The way to a woman's heart is paid through fresh sandwiches."

The vocals do feel a bit TOO plain at times, PC Music-kind. The spoken word certainly makes it feel like that too. Peach Bush Chop even features rapping, which SOMEHOW work. Probably just because I'm not a hip hop guy.

Small jungle/D&B vignettes appear in a few tracks, Null Sand Manadala being the strongest contender for having the best one. The volume of them aren't too much to overall the small electronic denizens walking past... that is, until the "t w i s t".

Seeing Eric mention a twist got me curious for what exactly could constitute a "twist" in an album already pulling between genres. But yup, it's there. And I wish I could see the look on some people's face when they get to it.

>>72430795
What I don't like so much about the "twist"... it felt kind of cheap. I do commend what comes after it, because the subsequent tracks felt all the more powered by it in instilling real unease. The 18 minute track and subsequent "When Black Keys Eat White" satiated my weekly dose of horror, with some vivid imagery of the events unfolding in the album.

And there's just something about the organic samples and surgery splicing of this album that reminds me of some other big artist, but I can't recall their name...

This album certainly isn't flawless, as no album that sets out to be so wildly diverse can be. But it's definetely something worth experiencing for a /daily/ type of person.

For real, give this a try. Before Eric makes you listen to it anyway.

7/10

>Leonard Collins - It Was a Dark And Stormy Night
>Tape Music, Modern Classical, Spoken Word

The first piece alone, Broken Light, utilizes the sounds of a CD Player and a string section. After a call and response between the CD Player and the string section, the CD is paused, unmuted, looping a few miliseconds of sound and creating a rhythm. VERY reminiscent of Different Trains, but with improvisation taking a focus instead.

Just check out the score for yourself:

http://www.nicolascollins.com/texts/brokenlightscore.pdf

Love shit like this. In fact, you can view commentary on each track itself on Collin's website: worth a read if you enjoyed it as much as I do.

http://www.nicolascollins.com/darkandstormytracks.htm

The album is actually available in FLAC for free here, what a guy

The second movement of Broken Light loops what I think is woodwind? Really hard to tell with the length of the loops itself. Still, the individiaulism of each string instrument spirals by in turns, while harmonizing themselves with the glitchy stutter of the CD player, trailing in their wake. Keeping in mind that this is mostly improv on the string's behalf, this recorded performance specifically was very strong.

The most chills I've gotten listening to ANYTHING in this tournament, from that composition alone.

Tobabo Fonio sees Collins utilizing self named "trombone propelled electronics." Basically, trombone + custom hard drive = Hella cool drone and noise. The trombone served as a controller for the electronics AND the speaker. He improves upon this idea all the way from 1986 (even after his first trombone gets run over by a taxi); live sampling, a computer filled to the brim with devices of Collin's own choice. The results?

Peruvian brass band music, manipulated like the previous CD Player, but enough to stand for itself. My favorite moment is 5 minutes in, where the feedback slows from percussive noise to tiny stabs of tone.

And then my ears were assaulted by some documentary wtf

Ignoring the OTHER entire essay on 'Backwards Electric Guitar' also used in this piece, two men take turns, narrating the Libretto for an original story based on the famous phrase of its title. Over the powerful guitar, all types of percussion (recognizing cymbal and gong scrapes/taps, temple blocks, shakers, real and fake), full on orchestration, the works, imitate and accompany the narrators of the increasingly complex set of tales and observations from the written narrative. It all becomes more and more lavish until it all goes to nothing, as expected.

As someone that loves surreal works of fiction and art, this was highly enjoyable, save for second narrator's tone that took me a minute to get used to. Gripping throughout the entire album, and well worth some time put aside for it.

Not really close to done or anything, but here's the first 30 people on /daily/core done without names because that's all topsters allows on one page lol. You'll be added soon enough if you aren't yet. Albums that aren't on the topsters 2 listing are currently the White Album until I can figure out how to replace it and make it look good. Augustus Pablo - Rockers Meets King Tubbys in a Fire House
>Dub

I haven't really listened to dub in its purest form, but this was nice. I didn't really have many strong opinions; I definitely agree that the first side is better than the second, but I don't really have enough experience with the genre to form any sort of real opinion. It's slow, hazy and has a lot of strong rhythm to it, which makes it some prime stoner music.

3/5

Cвiтлaнa Hяньo [Svitlana Nianio] & Oлeкcaндp Юpчeнкo [Alexander Yurchenko] - Лicoвa кoлeкцiя (Lisova Kolekciya)
>Avant-Folk

This is probably my least favorite album by Svitlana Nianio really. It's in some weird space between her other two albums; it has the creepy minimal approach of Znayesh yak but the weird ethereal nature theme of Kytysti. It doesn't work as well as I'd like; it's just two people holding different keys while disturbing stories are told in a monotonous manner that is a waste of Svitlana Nianio's voice.

3.5

Big L - Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous
>East Coast Hip Hop, Boom Bap, Hardcore Hip Hop

I think this might be a new hip hop favorite of mine; Big L drops some incredible lines and has a powerful presence. The production is a bit weak in comparison to Big L unfortunately; the drums are hard hitting and some tracks have a nice jazzy sound, but I have to agree with the common criticism that the hooks are weak. Still a great album, check it out.

3.5/5

v/a - Sounds of New Music
>Futurism

I generally quite like futurism, but this comp ranges from really interesting to being a total chore. The tracks representing artists here are picked as a more educational decision than one for normal listening - as in, the tracks aren't really the most mind blowing or strange usage of a then-new technique, but they do display it in a coherent manner.

Regardless, it must have been pretty shocking to listen to his back in the 50s. Seeing some earlier works by big names was cool, as was the track about making loops.

As it stands here's the chart. I redid the side parts so that they line up with the album rows. I know it looks like shit rn but I'm gonna see what I can do to have the source image look better and yet stay below 4MB. If anyone has any ideas here is the source image:
https://mega.nz/#!4ZFBhL7S!CMj9TxfkccTr8SCUEEOj-VrVGLmPbJR5wmKbmu-fdfc

I'm not very good with image compression. It starts out at 7.5MB then when I try resizing it in paint.net or MSpaint the file becomes 3x as big wtf.

Perhaps I'll just post it as a jpg but keep the source as a png.

I have a higher quality source image but had to downscale this one to post here.

Lemme know if you want any of these changed:
>Your name formatting/spelling/capitalization

Imma start doing a thing where I just review random singles, famous other obscure, because I don't have the time to listen to full length albums.

>Alton Ellis - La La Means I Love You

Sweet rocksteady. Ellis' and the backing vocals are so endearing, you can't just help but smile. The guy noodling on the keyboard is also pretty bomb.

3.5

>Frank Ocean - Biking

There's a great song in here, but Jay Z and Tyler were just fucking worthless. Why were they on here? They don't complement the mood, their verses are weak and aimless, and I'm surprised to say, Jay Z's flow was just garbage.

If you can move beyond that, Frank gives some nostalgic, atmospheric vocals over a hazy beat with some early Roland-type rhythm, which really complements that vibe. Still, those verses.

3.0

>Jay Prince - Anthem

Jay Prince is just a delight. I love this guy, definitely better than Chance in the "sunny, day-glo rapper with a good flow" niche.

The beat is kind of cluttered with bunch of random effects, but it grows on you.

3.5

>The Dils - I Hate the Rich

Imagine if The DB's decided to make a Damned knock off with some rudimentary Leftist lyrics. Now, being a leftist who hates the rich, this seemed like a gift from god.

Not so. It doesn't have the same punch that Damned had, and lacks the catchiness of other power pop outfits. Now thankfully, the Dils would really indulge their more pop influences on other songs, but this is just lacking.

Dead Boys - Young Loud and Snotty (1977)
>punk rock

The title pretty much sums everything up. Decent little punk album that's heavy on the punky attitude and light on pretty much everything elese. Bators is a great punk vocalist, but the songs accompanying him often fail to live up to his manic, thrashy delivery. Some killer tunes, like "Sonic Reducer", but a bit too meatheaded and simple for my punk tastes.

2.5+

Continuous Mode - Direct Out / Direct Drive (1997)
>minimal techno

Shockingly middle-of-the-road EP from one half of Porter Ricks. The production is nice, it fills that Basic Channel-esque niche of industrial-sounding techno that isn't really industrial techno, but even for techno this stuff gets old really quickly. There's very little variation from track to track, and the tracks do so little to keep me engaged. Fun little, short listen, but nowhere near a classic of the genre.

>Tort vs Stick
no surprises for me with this matchup.
Free Somebody was pretty solid. I've never listened to a K-Pop release before, so it was pretty nice. I especially liked the last song, I thought Luna had some pretty nice moments there. The Minutemen EP kicked ass almost as much as DNotD does. 15 minutes of raw punk power.

>Letov vs nyar
All this time I thought King Krule was an indie alt rock band or something lol. I didn't expect a pop album going into the EP, and it was pretty nice. I didn't find it super memorable, but it was a pleasant listen. Hartyga was really interesting tho: Jazz rock mixed with throat singing works really well somehow. It was a super cool listen, and a good find, Letov.

Letov and stick move on! Thanks for the recs, nyar and Tort.

Boards of Canada - Geogaddi (2002)
>IDM

The Boards of Canada album of my dreams. They're still quite static and a tad blander than I like my IDM, but their grasp on soundscaping is perfect here, they create a spooky, uneasy vibe with ease. The use of little interludes really helps this, and the actual IDM tracks themself combine this soundscaping skill with some really odd, syncopated beats. "Julie and Candy" is a big highlight, it's probably my new favorite BoC track. I could take a whole album of just the interludes, because I'm still not fully sold on their take on IDM, but these two styles combine in a cohesive, wonderfully sequenced album.

3.0-

Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius (1976)
>jazz fusion

Pretty much what I expected, a hollow fusion album that does little more than show off Pastorius' skills. The dude is fucking insane, that's no lie, and he does very well at never overshadowing the tracks, just staying in the background while still commanding the listener's attention. He's a joy to listen to, but the rest is overly cheesy and poppy, filled with synthetic sounding saxes and some truly horrid vocals. A killer electric bass album, but overly virtuosic with little substance.

So here's what we've got got top /daily/core so far. Some people have gone about saying we should replace albums on here. That's fine with me, as long as we can come to a consensus. Imo:

>Can never be replaced. WILL never die.
Negativland
Suicide
Fuckin' Owls

>Probably shouldn't be replaced
Eureka
Fushi
98.12.28
Uneven Compromise
'77 Live
Even Oxen

>Arguably could be replaced
Machine Gun
Musical Abortions
8+9
You Are My Everlovin'
Ziggurat

Not necessarily based on how much I like any of these, just that. Hell, I'd LOVE if 98.12.28 were replaced because that'd mean I could put it in my fucking square already. Memes, consistency of talking about, and general consensus is what I based this on.

What do y'all think should be added/removed? Should we do a strawpoll? OR we could just add another row of albums if we really need to. Keep in mind, if we add an album to upper /daily/core that would mean you can't have it for one of your three albums.

Popular ones I've thought of are
>Forca Bruta
>Daikanjyo
>Katamari Damacy
>Out to Lunch
>Satie
>Fare Foreward Voyagers
>Visions of the Country
>Well-Tuned Piano
>Ver 1.28

we can probably replace uneven compromise desu. it's great, but not very often talked about anymore.
you are my everlovin and machine gun should also probably go.
replace with forca bruta and something else.

it was one of the first /daily/core albums i heard and Keiji is a meme staple around here

also yeah 1.28 might deserve a place

hm everlovin' is kinda like what people have with sth like the Nocturnes, maybe it isn't talked about it that much, but nobody really ever panned it outside from S i think, and he has shit taste outside of 60s jazz anyways so nobody really cares

Everlovin' will always hold a place in my heart and is definitly classic-/daily/core, but I could easily see it being replaced.

good! I fucking suck at math so calc is hard, but I really like this year other than that. My electronic + experimental music class is awesome, my programming/art class is also really fun, and my psych class is kinda interesting, but not enough that I want to pursue it much more.

I really thought I would've gotten tired of programming but it's really fun for me. Def would not mind making a career out of this.

>>72434926

but then /daily/core would consist of Black Saint, Spiderland, WLWH, A Love Supreme, Future Days, Leaves Turn Inside You, Loveless etc

which isn't really an accurate representation of /daily/ as a community (bc those albums appear elsewhere in the chart)
>>
>>72435006
I don't see how any of those albums are talking points. They are just people's go-to recs if a person hasn't listened to them yet. When have we had continual in depth discussion about any of those albums?

>>72435028
I think you know exactly where those 3 votes are coming from lol

Maybe my point should have been more nuanced. /mu/-core should be excluded from /daily/-core, I think there are albums that are unique to this sub community

Musical Abortions is a Dead meme (haha) so replace

Ziggurat extremely needs to go, nobody talks about it anymore and afaik it's not even that generally well-liked around here, it's just that a few power users have it in their faves

Is Eureka really mentioned all that often? Feels more like O'Rourke as a whole is /daily/core but I couldn't say there are specific albums that necessarily deserve to be ultimate /daily/core

8+9, Everlovin', and Machine Gun can be replaced as well imo

Stuff that needs to get added: Forca Bruta, Daikanjyo, Ver 1.28, something by Fahey, one of the classical ones although idk which one fits the bill best

Also consider Deceit and Black Saint imo
>>
>>72439218
>Musical Abortions is a Dead meme (haha) so replace
perhaps but it's le funi so I kinda wanna keep

I think everyone is universal about removing Everlovin' and Ziggurat.

Eureka might not be, but Jim is mentioned pretty much every thread, and that one is probably most common. Plus it's one of the highest rated /daily/ albums in general.

>Deceit and Black Saint imo
eh...I would say those two are more general /mu/core than specific to /daily/.

peep the next thread mang we're talking about it there. If you have any more ideas reply there.
