Hello /gg/ I've recently been feeling the urge to buy a guitar and just play. I don't want to become some famous musician or anything, I just want to be able to make some music. I'm 19 years old with no prior guitar experience and I wanted to ask how old you were when you first started playing and ask for any beginner tips? Also, how long until you considered yourself rather decent? Thank you.

I'm great...at what I'm good at. I'm sub par at a lot of things. I'll be decent... never.
>>
>>72411175
Yeah, to be honest it took me a few weeks practice to get the rhythm of the fast part down but now I have it I'm hopeful some more of the solo's will become a bit easier to play now I know how to go about it, I'd like to be able to play tornado of souls in another few years but I'll have to see about it..

Don't be that faggot who trys to learn his first "hard" solo within your first year, it'll sound shit and sloppy and those people tend to be so oblivious to their bad playing, just keep it simple, learn open chords, power chords, barre chords and practice pentatonics, in the words of Kieth Richard "you got to build the rocket before you go to space".

Difficult to say, Eurorack modules on their own don't usually make a noise. It's when you combine them together in clever ways they start to generate noises. The Pittsburgh stuff is excellent though, I've got three Pittsburgh Synth Boxes in the modular. Those are a great first step in modular as they have a multiwave oscillator, LFO, ADSR, VCA and a really good filter all in one small box.

I play bass with my school's jazz band, but I play guitar as well. Next year there is going to be another bassist, but there won't be a guitarist. Should I keep playing bass and have to take turns every song, or switch to guitar and never be heard beneath the horns?

Pittsburgh Patch Box will hold 42HP of modules, I'd get a Pittsburgh Synth Box (28HP wide), some kind of small sequencer and maybe a second oscillator. If you want a really cheap way to get into Eurorack then look at building Frequency Central kits. I've got two of their System X oscillators, two filters, a VCA, phaser and a mult. Plus I built two new cases using their power supply boards.

Yeah, lots of people use them to make shitty idiotic bleepy bloop noises. I've got something like eight channels of MIDI to control voltage so I can trigger the sounds from Cubase. When you actually use a modular as a musical instrument you get a synth that sounds incredibly powerful and with really fine control of the sound. Only dickheads pour money into modulars just to make boingy clang noises.

Thanks man, I'm primarily interested in using it only as an effects box for my guitar to pass through, aren't the oscillators sound sources themselves or do they work sort of like oscillating fuzzes where the oscillator effects the guitar signal (totally new to this so I probably sound like a dumb shit)

I don't have a problem with modular synths, they're just a tool. My problem is that the people who are usually using them are retards, they're fascinated with building sounds instead of making music. It ends up just being an expensive hipster toy.

I have a Moog Voyager myself along with an MS2000B. Once I saw where the modular thing was taking enthusiasts around 2008-9 I pulled back from expanding the Voyager because I didn't want to fall into that same trap.

To be honest, if I'd bought the Prophet 08 first then I'd never have built the modular. digitally-controlled analog polysynth is a more useful instrument. But the modular just sounds so incredibly good, a few minutes patching leads you into sounds that you can't get out of a normalized synth. And you'll know yourself how the MS2000 compared to a real analog.

>>72415723
Prophet 08 has digitally-controlled analog oscillators. same as the Voyager. Some people take this to mean "digital oscillators" but that's really not the case. The core is analog, with the switching frequency of the transistor that controls the triangle core determined by a digital clock. That's how DCO synths have worked since the JUNO, Yanaha CS80, Sequential Prophet and countless others and it's the only way to keep them in perfect tuning. That's another drawback to the modular, that's true voltage controlled oscillators rather than DCO so it can drift as it warms up and the scaling sometimes isn't good across more than two octaves. but the Prophet 08 is very much an analog synth. I think the Prophet 12 uses digital oscillators, that's not a road I want to go down.

Going through these old Hawaiian guitar method books from the '30s, it's obvious they all use open A tuning. It's certainly a departure from C6 but possibly a bit more intuitive, especially when trying to read written notes rather than tabs. Getting more used to it.

I used to host an open jam night at a bar in my city. I don't think those events attract a whole lot of weirdos, and the stuff I would play with the rest of the house band would range from '90s alt. rock to blues to jazz. Anyone who wants to take the time to pack up an instrument, haul it around, and play music probably is probably an okay person.

Here's the deal if you're unsure of what you might be getting into: ask the person for some contact info, like a phone number, and make sure you get at least one or two links to their social media. Most people at least have a Facebook, and most musicians actively use YouTube to promote themselves/develop a fanbase. Also, probably not a great idea to meet someone you've never met before at their house unless you're meeting with a full band that uses it as their practice space; pick a public space to meet up beforehand, like a coffeeshop to hang out in and get to know each other and your respective musical tastes. If that's not possible, bring a friend with you to wherever you decide to hang/jam out.

Be safe, have fun.

Absolutely, objectively, no

Whatever gets you making progress is the right way for you to learn. Many people who obsessively practice scales and fingering exercises have zero idea of how to write a song, they just get better at scales and fingering exercises then disappear up their own anuses in a puff of overly technical smoke.

tl;dr - if you're writing songs then you're being creative rather than learning to wank the guitar off

I know but what if you just want the guitar for the looks?

I actually posted asking about the same thing yesterday (different guitar, same site).

My thing is I want something to be the basis of a project while also being something I can dink around with while gradually upgrading with better parts. An incentive for me to go chink is how hard it is to find a yellow Strat body with the bridge holes drilled. If Guitar Fetish sold their bodies pre-drilled for a trem I'd just get one of those.

So in my case it makes sense. In your case it may or may not.

Honestly though, for a Tele I'd rather throw my own together. It's not hard or particularly expensive and frankly that relic looks like total ass.

then go right ahwad

you never know, stick a Fender decal on the headstock and sell it to an idiot on craigslist, might be quids in there

It had the Fender decal on it actually, they remove it from the pic because legal shit you know

you can see it in this one (same site)

right, because it would be breach of copyright if it had a decal on it but without it that's just fine and dandy

Is there any problem using an amp like this if I just want it for a clean headroom to use fuzz and overdrive pedals on it and loud volumes? Will it sound worse than if I did it with a volume-equivalent tube amp like a hotrod deluxe?
>>
>>72421716
Never tried it but solid states don't always work well as pedal platforms, especially with fuzz.

Might have to see if you can try before you buy lad.

I've just bought a ProCo RAT 2 and intend on pairing with with a TubeScreamer clone, like the Maxon OD808. Can you reccomend a nice reverb that would go well with those pedals? I play a Fender Telecaster "Tele-Bration" edition hooked up to a Marshall Stack.

I play atmospheric black metal.

I started at 11. I'm 28 now. The one thing I wish I could have have prevented when I started was learning what drop running were. It really hindered my progress because I developed a dependency on bars and developed lackluster bending and vibrato techniques from such a dumbed-down way of playing.

So apparently Steve Morse's right wrist is now completely fucked, his long-term arthritis recently being exacerbated with bone spurs that have made playing excruciatingly painful for him. According to some guy who knows his guitar technician, Joe Satriani will be finishing Purple's current tour, which will be their last before they retire.

So post your favourite Morse stuff!
