I've been wanting to make a guide to Herbie's albums since I've been on my Herbie journey for the past few months and been having a great time with it.

WHERE TO START WITH HERBIE:

>If you like Standard Jazz & Bop, more straightforward and less experimental
Takin Off (1962)
Inventions and Dimensions (1963) [Makes a lot of use of Samba Percussion]
Empyrean Isles (1964)
Maiden Voyage (1965)
Quartet (1982)

>If you like Experimental
The Mwandishi Trilogy
(Mwandishi, Crossings, and Sextant)

>If you like Funk-Jazz
Fat Albert Rotunda (1969)
Headhunters (1973)
Thrust (1974)
Manchild (1975)
Directstep (1979)
Mr. Hands (1980)

>If you like Disco & Electronic
Sunlight (1978)
Feets Don't Fail me Now (1979)
Future Shock (1983)
Sound System (1984)

>Other Suggestions (Unclassified)
The Prisoner (1969)
Secrets (1976)
The Piano (1979)
Dis Is Da Drum (1993)

Hope this is a good guide.

I'm suprised Mu was the album chose for Don Cherry. I would have expected Brown Rice (Don Cherry) to be the essential of his discography.
Nevertheless it's a fantastic album

Ken Burns Jazz was a PBS documentary series from 2000 that was highly controversial for letting major contributor Wynton Marsalis rewrite jazz history so to speak by having the documentary focus 8 of its 10 episodes on Louis Armstrong in some way shape or form and spend 4 episodes on the swing era, while condensing all post 1960 jazz into one episode and writing most of it off as being "not real jazz".

I would give you one if I had one, and if you were part of What.cd. You should learn some stuff about torrenting and audio if you don't know much.

If you have never been part of a tracker, I'd wait until they open interviews up.

What's catalogue was insane, biggest music library of all time. Apollo has had a pretty good jumpstart, with plenty of issues, but still, it's following the good path (mostly)

Hey Herbie Hancock guy. I'm curious about your origin story. Did you just wake up one day and decide: "From now on my life is going to be all about Herbie Hancock." and that was a big turning point for you or what?
>>
>>69692502
I don't remember the EXACT origin story, to be honest, BUT, here's the general story:

I hear about him during the end of summer this year, I look him up, a lot of his albums had AMAZING album art and I heard he was one of the most versatile Jazz musicians out there.

So I decided 'eh, fuck it, I'll try this guy out'.
I listened to his first 3 albums, got distracted, but then decided to continue the project a few months later, and I've been listening through his albums since.

And (for the most part) I've loved it. I'm listening to Gershwin right now.

this is from "In the Tradition." there's another track from there that's a very sinister wild cover of Goodbye Porkpie hat, and the rest is his semi-straight Warne Marsh style on alto. He's done a whole lot more with the instrument most of which I've yet to get too.

Ken Burns jazz is fine for early jazz through hard bop. Then they tried to squeeze everything after 1960 into one fucking episode. They hardly talk about post Love Supreme trane or anything Ornette did after shape of jazz to come or any shit like that. Plus they try to make Wynton out to be some messiah-savior of jazz which he is SO not. It left a lot, lot to be desired. However it's still one of the best resources for information about early jazz especially and it covers bebop pretty well too. It has been a while since I watched it but that's my take.

The Genius of Bud Powell vols 1-4 are a wealth of great compositions and great playing. Time Waits, vol 4 is especially great with Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones. Bud's not on a whole lot of honest-to-god records per se because of the 40s recording ban and because of his later-life mental health issues caused by the shock therapy that he received in a mental institution in the late 40s. Tragic how they fucked him up, he's one of the all time great geniuses of the piano and bebop.

Tisziji's discography is pretty enormous, and a lot of it is up on Spotify. He is one of the best kept secrets of improvised music. One of the only people capable of creating on the same spiritual plane as Trane was in his later years. Other cats are Pharaoh Sanders or Charles Gayle.

well, other types of jazz base their structures around the changes in chords, like on chord after another in a progression. the melody is played along with the chords. modal jazz is different as its based around a whole scale, which is a collection of notes that a song is in. for example, the C major scale is consisted of all the white notes on the piano, some other scales use some black keys and omit some white keys. modal jazz plays along with the scale, instead of being based around the chords
>>
>>69704737
So in a way Modal Jazz is more restrictive and perhaps more repetitive than other forms of jazz? Sorry, like I said I know jack shit about theory
>>
>>69704795
lol no, if anything modal jazz gives you more freedom, as you have a whole space to build on instead of being restricted by chord progression. modal jazz was an important step towards the development of free jazz, which is the opposite of restrictive.

normal jazz is about chord changes
so like the underlying structure of a song is
E minor chord, F major chord, G major chord
then you do variations on this theme

but modal jazz is based on scales
so liek the underlying structure of a song is
C note, D note, E note, F note, G note, A note, B note
then variations on this theme

>>
>>69708590
I think it's fair to say that "avant-garde jazz" by definition strays from the conventions of it's time (though that's rarely the primary focus of the artist) but free jazz often isn't avant garde and there's a lot of artists who make free jazz as if they were making jazz in any other idiom like hard bop or swing.
Certainly at it's conception free jazz players like Ornette Coleman were very clearly trying to be forward thinking but I think he and most people compose music like that because they think it's a better way of expressing the things they want to express.
Best case study on that is someone like Coltrane. He changed his medium to suit the message he wanted to give and happened to be near enough to the cutting edge of the genre for most of his career cause that's where he saw the best possibilities (as opposed to because he was just out to break rules for the sake of it).
>>69708694
I was actually going to put him on a /blindfold/ a while back but never got around to it.
He has a killer trio album with Wayne Shorter and Jim Hall and that he could get sidemen like that is a good indication of how he was perceived in the jazz world. Sure if you're listening to him yourself, you can hear he clearly got where he did through talent rather than sympathy.
>>
>>69708775
>>
>>69708897
I don't disagree with you, just wanted to state that being nitpicky about what albums fit what genres is a bit more confusing when it comes to something like this compared to what's reggae, for example.
>>
If anyone has a DL link for any Sun Ra share please
>>
>>69709019
That's deffinitely fair yeah. This stuff is kinda nebulous.
I responded the way I did cause there's kind of an attitude that surrounds the free jazz end of the jazz spectrum where people tend to view players as edgy counterculture experimenters when most of them were just trying to play jazz for the same reasons that the likes of Art Blakey or Charlie Parker were. They were just going about it in a different way.
>>
I've got a question that's easy to answer but hard to make, so I'll just write it in the tried and true fill-in-the-blanks format:

"The ______ scale is to jazz what the pentatonic scale is to the blues"
>>
>>69689249
Make the years 1957-1979

Add Miles Davis - Milestones, 'Round About Midnight, Birth of the Cool, In a Silent Way
John Coltrane - Blue Train, Giant Steps, My Favorite Things
Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
>>
>>69709128
Of course. I especially love watching players like Coltrane and Coleman descend into that experimentation, comparing each exploration to the next.
>>
>>69709193
In most jazz music there isn't a singular be all end all scale, but to me, Harmonic Minor accents always come across as iconic when they slip in between normal major and minor scales.

I'd consider it the 808 cowbell of jazz, where you suddenly catch yourself listening to something very distinct and familiar.
>>

Don't try to go to scale-y. Listen to accessible solos you like (i.e with low note density) and try to find out where it strays away from a scale and how.

So Miles wanted to go modal jazz, because he felt restricted by the intense harmony of the times. If you're making the changes in bebop, then you're already a lot of the way towards a good solo and there are some tunes where it can be difficult for any improviser to say much in their solo. Tunes like that are more about virtuosity then depth and development of melodic ideas.

Modal is jazz flips all that on it's head, because you suddenly have all this room to say whatever you want. You can't just bebop up and down changes, because there's only one for a long time.

You also aren't actually limited to only the 7 notes of whatever scale you're using. Just like how not every note in a bebop scale would belong to a chord in a meaningful way people would play outside of the scale sometimes. If you listen to Coltrane on Kind of Blue he's in and out of the mode a lot. It's not wrong it's just how he played, he's primarily in whatever mode he should be in, but he still uses the other notes when it suits him.

Also another reason why modal tunes can be less restrictive is because of how the chords are voiced. Chords in modal tunes tend to be voiced out in ways that obscure their function. A normal chord in a bebop tune is generally voiced in such a way that you know what it is or at least how if relates to the stuff around it. Modal tunes tend to use very specific voicings that obscure that a lot so it's not exactly clear what it is. This results in the chord actually being better for more chromatic improvising on top. It's a lot of the basis behind McCoy Tyner's style since he used those chords so much to play behind Coltrane who would play really, really chromatic lines.

based on that...

My Point of View, Inventions and Dimensions and Maiden Voyage are all 5 tracks but they have little to no electronic elements in them.

Speak Like a Child and The Prisoner were slightly more electronic but not very 'experimental' per say.

I'm THINKING it's Man-Child because that had a lot of Jazz-Funk and Electronic elements.

There's a small chance you're talking about Sunlight too.

It's more than likely either Sunlight or Man Child. If it's not one of those two get back to me.

Mmm no, I can't remember anything about the album art. I thing that it was from the mid 80's.

Mmm no, it's not that one. The album that I'm looking for don't have any funky sound. It don't have drums or if it have it was very uncommon, not a beat in the back. And it as a very obscure album. This sounds goods too anyway!

Mmm no, it's not this one. Maybe it was rotulated as a Herbie's album and maybe it was from somebody else?
The music on it was not very confortable to hear, no nice melodies, no funk or common drum beats, it was more electronic noises.

The only other albums I can think of are Perfect Machine, Futureshock, or Sextant.
