I'm black myself and all that shit but honestly I think this notion of "if you're white and make rap music you're literally a scumbag and you're appropriating black culture" is really stupid.

I think the fact that he was a major overnight success while so many black artists struggle (mixed with the fact that heaps of praise and awards were unloaded onto him instead of black artists) gives him this unique kind of white guilt, or at least some kind of obligation to bring it up. I understand what he means by white people typically being treated better than blacks but I feel like at this point in time all racism is more of a personal/opinionated thing than a legal thing. I personally think that this kind of thing can only change with time, like we're going to have to wait for the old and middle aged white people who hold these poor opinions to die off rather than re-educate them. I feel like society is progressing, more and more people are being themselves and crossing cultures and I think that's wonderful. And as this time passes I think we're going to become a less "look based" society, like it's going to be less based on your color. I highly doubt that people marching in the streets and otherwise causing uproars are going to change those poor opinions.

It also boils my blood when people bring up the idea that people who enjoy black culture should somehow be involved in a black rights movement. I think that you should support a problem because you see it as an issue, not because of your preference in music or clothes. I also don't like the idea of saying that something isn't "yours" to make or enjoy. A lot of great artists wouldn't have come about had this been the case.

What this song is, is a desperate attempt by Macklemore to be accepted by the hip-hop community.

I mean, look at the guy and his past and everything. He's essentially a student of hip-hop. This guy has loved the genre and the culture for what seems like his entire life. And he's out here trying to make hip-hop because that's what he loves. He wants to spread messages with his music like the rappers he idolised. You can see from his earlier music that hip-hop has played a huge part in his life. So he's making this music and he's getting buzz underground and people like him. And he's on top of the world because he's making his way into the culture he loves.

And then he makes a meme song and catapults to the top of the charts. And he's all over the place performing the music he loves in front of millions of people. But he's essentially changed from hip-hop to pop and his audience shows this. And then the Grammys incident happens and the entire hip-hop community turns against him. And he's now considered a laughingstock by the culture he looks up to. It must fucking suck.

Why do you think he put Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee, and Grandmaster Caz in Downtown? He wants to show people that he knows his hip-hops.

So now he's making this song about white privilege to get accepted by the black community and subsequently the hip-hop community.

Unfortunately it's cringeworthy as shit and has completely backfired and shown how desperate he is.

I mean I don't like his music but I do feel bad for the man in a sense.
