one of the best ways is listening to a lot of jazz music

Listen to one album each by Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, and Pharaoh Sanders and then call everyone a pleb who doesn't like those artists. That's all there is to it.

don't ever listen to the phony blokes that will tell you that you need to put some time and actual research in your hobby and continue making useless threads

I'll post some of my favorites from Scruffy's list

this feels like a very un-Piero like choice at #60, but it's great hammond driven soul jazz
>>
>>61981629
Scruffy's list is terrible

>>61981553
I don't think I've ever seen a good jazz thread on /mu/
>>
>>61981293
Listen to several Jazz albums, try to start a jazz band, and after you realize you have no feel for jazz, just claim you never liked it to start with.

maybe you should go back to your bebop lessons

It actually is. It's why I can't stand to come on /mu/ anymore. I'm not even sure what I'm doing here now.

Listen to piano trios (drums/pianos/bass). Horns are a huge barrier to jazz. I would also recommend Smokestack by Andrew Hill, which has no horns and is challenging, but more traditional piano trios are good too.
Listen to the interplay and the improvisation techniques.
Once you think you have aquired the taste, introduce horns with albums that have softly played horns, or horn players playing flutes. Realize the unique elements that horns and horn players bring to the table. Older Miles albums are good for getting used to trumpets. Older Hank Mobley albums are great for soft sax.
Once you are comfortable, start going systematically through albums. Huge list of genres from a particular genre, top tier labels, etc. I listened to the entire Blue Note catalog personally (not counting albums that were clearly poor from the start). You can find 99% of old jazz albums on youtube to check them out.
Once you've found good players, you can find out what albums they lead, who they acted as sidemen for, etc.. You will eternally branch out to new and wonderful albums without the forced aproach.
>>
>>61981629
I've always liked this album, didn't know that cuck liked it too.
>>
>>61981710
I don't take bebop lessons but I would assume that anybody who does would know quite a bit more about jazz than Scrufffy. Or you for that matter.

gotcha
you should shutdwon your computer and go to your local mensa reunion, you're just too good to waist your time posting here. and anyway it is useless because we inferior beings don't even understand 30% of your genius posts

what kind of jazz do you like, bud? i've been listening to a lot of Steve Lacy and Charlie Haden recently. You ever hear this album? It's great. Cherry in a small group, like Mu except Haden pushes him towards more melodic playing, really mind-blowing stuff

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmenvryMpNE
>>
>>61981760
Anyone who actually listens to music instead of autistically cataloging it knows more about jazz- or any genre- than Scruffy.
>>
Can anyone name me some jazz that has horns (mostly trumpets) played so softly that they get that "whispering" effect all the way through? Preferably with fewer instruments. There was a particularly slow and gentle piano/trumpet duet that I can't remember, but I don't think I'll find that again.
>>
>>61981787
I haven't heard that particular album. I've never liked Don Cherry's playing all that much. It seems so disconnected to me. Any time I listen to him I find myself wishing I was listening to Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Charles Tolliver, or Eddie Henderson.

I do love Charlie Haden though. His recordings with Paul Motian are amazing. There is also a Fred Hersch album called Sarabande that Haden plays on that is one of my favorites. Recently I listened to a Roswell Rudd album called Everywhere that Haden played on and it was pretty good.

Scaruffi's jazz list is a lot more reasonable than his rock list imho - he probably doesn't know enough esoteric jazz to fill a list

Have you heard the album with Rudd on in, Regeneration? With Lacy, Misha Mengelberg, and Han Bennink, plus maybe Kent Carter on bass? That's a hell of a recording.

Have you heard any of Motian's trio with Frisell? I've been listening to a whole bunch of Bill's 90s and 00s work, but haven't listened to that group at all.

And I know how you feel about Cherry, that's why I was so impressed with his playing in that trio, because Haden really grounds him.

Have you heard any of Cuong Vu's music? The way he plays the trumpet really can floor you in the right take. I got a chance to see him with Frisell and Ted Poor and Vu really stole the show.

Also Captcha just made me select a cup of coffee as a picture of tea :/

I've been listening to it from Spotify (which is missing that track I linked, though), but it's readily available on Slsk

here's something else I like with Motian on drums

it is really annoying when people say "it's on soulseek." yea, obviously it's going to be on soulseek, almost everything is. it's probably on What too.

if someone says "do you have a DL link" or "can you post a DL link" and you say "it's on soulseek" you are essentially just saying "no, i'm not going to provide a DL link for you." let's not pretend it means anything else.

yea, i know you can post that i should just install soulseek, but if i wanted to i would. any reasons, no matter how practical, can be deflecting with something like "there's an android app" etc etc and it gets almost comical. i know you're not going to post a link, it's just a pet peeve when someone says "it's on soulseek" as if that's helpful in anyway. just say "no" or ignore the post.

>be me, 10/10 white male, talking to someone
>they use word i don't recognize
>"what does that word mean?"
>"it's in the dictionary anon"
>stop conversation, leave room
>start looking for dictionary
>"well i can't find a dictionary. can you just tell me what the word means"
>"there are dictionaries on google. look it up"
>"can i borrow your phone to look it up?"
>"you can get a phone off craigslist"
>>
>>61984395
Not that guy, but are you fucking retarded? You're on a computer RIGHT NOW. It would take MORE effort for him to search for his collection, upload it, and send a link than it would be for you to go to Soulseek and just type in its name and find a format that's MORE APPROPRIATE FOR YOU for something that YOU WANT to listen to, not something he offered.
A better analogy is this.
You're reading a dictionary looking for a particular kind of word, someone else mentions an interesting word in a passing conversation, and you ask for a page number. He gives you a vague idea of the page number because he doesn't know exactly, and you respond with this rude bullshit about how he's not doing enough for you.
Read between the lines; soulseek is a great platform, if you don't already have it you should download it.
Absolutely disgusting. Learn to use your computer. The best thing you can teach yourself is dependence. The worst thing you can hold onto is this sense of entitlement.
>>
>>61984618
i don't have a sense of entitlement and your analogy was crap btw.
i know that if i really, truly wanted it, i could get it. if i have a slight curiosity, i'm going to ask for a link and if the link doesn't show up i'll probably just forget about it.

i KNOW i can find it. i just don't want to put in any efforts and plus you're gay and watch too much anime.
>>
>>61985529
By switching to this tab twice, you could have opened soulseek 2 times, and by typing the amount of words you have, you could have searched "Fort Yawuh" or albums of equal length 139 times.
