new album when??
>>
also they're doing a new solid steel show atm

http://www.nts.live/
>>
>>61922506
thanks lad
>>
>>61922506
I think they're doing another mix on NTS tomorrow as well. They have to be up to something.

I'd bet we'll be getting an album this year but it'll be a little ways off. Maybe something like a November release.
>>
>>61923622
King Joy says no new album soon. But these radio shows must signify something, a promotion of some kind right?

Also, I'm hoping for a tracklist for this show. They've played some bomb shit so far
>>
>>61923845
He said "yet" not "not soon" ;)

I dunno, I think that Sean has said that they can jam out tracks super fast, and with their software up to date from the tour, I think a new album this year is certainly possible.
>>
>>61923928
I assumed all that talk in interviews about working an album in real time referred to what they later released as soundboards. I loved that shit, but I kind of hope they take their time and use care to record an album instead of jamming one out

Does it make sense that Ae hosting a radio show signifies something, or is it simply that they decided to curate a mix for a regular program
>>
The live albums released re killer
>>
>>61924018
I dunno, but they finished Exai in 2012 - I reckon that they have material saved up.

I wasn't talking about the "real time" quote either, somewhere in the AAA they said in only a year they had clocked in 300 hours of jams. I think the way they work allows for tracks to formulate faster.
>>
Yeah, I also figured these radio things were promotion for an upcoming project...

A E 1 2 W H E N
>>
Yup, considering they are doing two shows (one tomorrow), I think it's more that just a casual mix
>>
>>61924491
Sean posting on WATMM tonight is a good sign too imo...
>>
LP12 is gonna be great I bet
>>
Funny story, these lads threatened to mug me in Manchester the other day
>>

Going by the recent live sets, I totally agree

>>
>>61924281
>somewhere in the AAA they said in only a year they had clocked in 300 hours of jams
to be fair i was under the impression that sean was referring to 300 hours of ~unedited~ jam sessions, so most of that time was prob aimless noodling tbqh
>>
https://soundcloud.com/ninja-tune/solid-steel-radio-show-2212016-hour-1-autechre

first set is up (with tracklist). wonder how the second will compare? i remember for quaristice they did two different mixes - one was more experimental with musique concrete elements while the second was a bangin' hip-hop & ardcore set.
>>
>>61932043
Thanks mate
>>
>>61921598
>tfw no Rob bf

But yeah, hopefully soon. I loved the sound of their live sets and actually barely missed seeing them live (which I'm still pissed about). I think they might do an EP first and then package it with a corresponding album, like they've done in the past
>>
wasn't the live sets the new album?
enjoyed that alot been playing it like mad.
>>
>>61921598
anybody in here (i'm gessing some of you in here) seen them on their last tour? Ahhhgh so fucking life-affirming. Can't wait till their next works. Jammed out to Quaristice today. Everything they've done satisfies me on a spiritual level.
>>

I look nothing like Rob b-but I'll be your bf

Saw them in Austin, fucking unreal. My body was physically exhausted after the sonic beat-down istg.
>>
>>61933728
Yes Sir.
Saw them in Chicago. One of (if not THE) finest shows of my life. Friends I brought were both put off and amazingly intrigued by the weird musics te he he.
But fuck, no lights, no nothing but austere elegant autechre. So fucking happy with my life having seen that show.
>>
>>61933822
Oh it was for sure the best live music experience of my life so far. I've never experienced sound in such a physical manner, it's hard to explain.

Did your friends make it all the way through? This guy's girlfriend in front of me left not even 15 minutes into their set lmao. My venue kept the bar lights on which ruined the atmosphere desu.

they did, actually. considering they had no idea what was happening, I'm impressed/pleased that they saw it out.
Yeah, the only thing distracting (but actually kind of rad) was the exit signs in the venue I saw them. Metro Chicago. But, yeah man, ambient lighting has a major effect when there is NO lighting. Sorry to hear it wasn't dark enough. But at least the ambient noise [as in light] probably drew your attention even more to their austere stage presence, no? It's a delicate thing to be so extreme, but one remembers that shit in a good way.

I saw them in August.

I stared at Sean eating what seemed to be cheese fries on the bus after the show. He noticed me staring got up and closed the curtain on their tour bus.

The show was great. I just wish I got to actually see them up close with good lighting at the least.

Can't blame them for wanting to get the fuck out of Philly though.

yeah the track-list is in the description. it's an ace mix.

apparently sean is doing another mix this sunday. i'd love to see him do something a bit more dance-oriented (that's not electro) since these last two have been skewed towards being experimental.
>>
>>61942340
Yeah, I'd love to hear something along those lines as well. Of course it will always be experimental, but some experimental dance grooves would be fantastic. I'll definitely stay tuned for that, thanks for mentioning it.
>>
>>61942503

You should download the 2008 Experimental Mix they did for BBC 1 here. Probably my favorite of theirs - it's really fucking insane.
>>
>>61942789
Thank you, man, I will definitely do so.
>>
>>61942789
ayyy i remember this and it was brought up in the aaa i believe: they lined up a bunch of hip-hop and rave tunes for the bbc experimental mix and then played a bunch of musique concrete on a different dance-ier program lol

also they're both really short.

totally does.
>>
>>61946549
>also they're both really short.

I was surprised by that too. Seems many of their promo photos are shot to make them out to be these mysterious genius badasses, so I guess I had some expectation.

Also, both shows are super cool, and I'm so glad we have tracklists. Many nodes for me to explore from that will occupy my musical interests for months I'm sure
>>
>>61946865
they are mysterious genius badasses!
but yeah, they don't seem short haha

i've listened to a few of their interviews, but still one thing that almost surprised me more than their height was how high their fucking voices were

it might count as 2 albums in this regard

but for oversteps they released move of ten a few months later and that's the length of a full album - so p much the same amount as material as exai.

and for quaristice they released (versions), quadrange.ep.ae, and the japanese bonus ep. they tend to release a lot of material at one time, so exai wasn't really that out of the ordinary (and it's also why l-event was only 25 minutes)

Honestly the first minute of Altbizz always completely changes my mood, it's almost scary. No Gelk? No M39 Diffain? No Uviol? NO PIEZO? I kid, I kid. Some good fuckin choices there. Man, there Discog is pretty solid - in fact there are only 3 tracks by them that I straight up dislike.
>>
How long did it take everyone to get through the full discography?
Took me about 3 and a half months from Cavity Job to L-Event and then they drop the fucking lives a month after
>>
>>61960511
Oh shit I forgot piezo that should be there. Uviol is alright and I prefer inhake 2 to gelk but that's just me.

Never heard M39 diffain which is weird because I thought I had most of their work.

Also fact Mix 122 is great although the rapping in it isn't so good. I like when necrophagist comes in randomly.

>>61960697
Took me about 4 but that's only because I put off listening to quaristice/quadrange for the longest time.
>>
>>61960697
I took it pretty slow, spent quite a bit of time with each release, took breaks, etc. Probably a year.
>>
I think they can call it quits now tbqh. Where else can they go as artists? Anything they release now would just be a rehash.

It would be interesting seeing them work with live processed acoustic instruments, but it doesn't seem like their style. + people would accuse them of ripping off Aphex Twin

Journos have said that about them just 10 years ago. They definitely still have some novel ideas.

>It would be interesting seeing them work with live processed acoustic instruments
They've done a lot of similar things. Not live, but heavily processed recordings/samples. Not everything they do is crazy synthesis.
>>
>>61961734
I thought that too, but going by these live sets they clearly have a direction to head. Even on parts of L-event we saw them being more abstract than they have been in a while (Osla for n)

Tbqh, I think they'll continue to make music for a long time

They could make a record that synthesizes all of their avant garde classical influences while completely leaving out the propulsive rhythms of their dub, electro and ambient influences. They've dipped their toes in that for a few songs, but never for a whole album. I probably wouldn't like it. But It would be intriguing. Like when Squarepusher made an album of just spooky electric jazz.
>>
>>61967417

Not just the melodies, but it's actually still a very beat-driven album - the rhythms are just pushed way back in the mix and obscured by the reverb. It's an album that's "pretty" on the surface, but there is a whole lot of depth there if you really dig into it.

Also love how the melodies were done with markov chains - it's basically Autechre_ebooks

god, the "track" from 21:50-28:00 here is one of my favorite 90s Autechre moments. Shame they never released it :( but at least it's straight from the soundboard

>the listener is basically forced to make out all of the melodies on their own

This is what I love about it too, its like they supply you with a fractured melody that might come together for only a brief moment in the track, but once you hear it and re-listen its like you now have the missing part in your head and the song makes more sense.

A couple months ago I was on here in the generals running my mouth about my fantastic sounding ae bootleg from a show on their 2015 tour, saying I was gonna share it, and then soon after they dumped all those soundboards through warp. Idk if there's any connection, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Easy: Listen to Quaristice Versions and all the other EPs with longer more fleshed out versions of the ideas on Quaristice. The Japanese one with IO Mons is great.
>>
>>61969911
Oversteps just has these small moments of indescribable emotional power (the crying synth in the second half of os veix3, the melody in qplay) that aren't to be found in other AE albums. I love their crazy Max/MSP-noodling and mental rhythms as much as the next guy, but I appreciate it even more when the 2 lads show that they can write a beautiful, little tune as well
>>
>>61976909
personally i love quaristice and it's structure/how they chopped up the tracks into those little vignettes (think sean mentioned it being like a long hallway of doors in a dream), but i agree with the other anon in that you can maybe understand their vision a bit more by listening to the accompanying eps.

also, all the other (6!) versions of perlence are way better than the one included on the og album.

how do you define an album?
>>
>>61983707
A cohesive collection of pieces carefully crafted and edited. Not fun, spontaneous, live sound experiments.
>>
>>61983899
Either of those are albums
>>
>>61983899
>fun, spontaneous, live sound experiments

but that's exactly what Untilted, Quaristice, Oversteps and Exai are

>>
>>61984171
only every ae interview since 2005
>>
>>61984209
I call bullshit.

If that's the case, why don't they release an official album every 3 months? Or at least every year? It would seem to be easy and it would make them a lot more money.
>>
>>61984281
fair enough
they said they generate a lot more material than they release, maybe they are just picking the best bits

it doesn't make any difference to me how a track was made
most of tri repetae and amber were recorded live, does that make those albums not albums now

exai was made using an earlier version of the software they used for ae_live, is exai not an album now

or like tangerine dreams first 5 albums are they not albums either

is it just because there was an audience there? is context causing problems for your categories

the word I would emphasize is spontaneous. I was alluding to ae_live. Tangerine Dream probably rehearsed the fuck out of those songs before they recorded them.

Cohesion is also an issue although it's not impossible in a live setting.

BTW: Fugazi just came out with 800 new albums. Aren't you excited?

>>61984608
Autechre is probably my favorite live act. Nah, I'm sure there's an established collection of parameters that they fuck with, but those are probably (by design) loose musical ideas and not completely finished works. That's my only point.

Although, that forces me to evaluate the validity of improvised music. Miles Davis made some of my favorite albums of all time. His songs were culled from several takes and none of them sounded remotely the same. I see your point in that respect. I just believe that curation is of the utmost importance to maintain the validity of the music. Can you name your favorite Psychic TV album?
>>
>>61984883
recording something can be finishing it, if you don't do anything to the recording
finishing = not doing anything else
>>
I would call AE_LIVE an album, doesn't seem so different from their studio albums, but I don't think it is or will be a substitute for LP12 - I still think that's coming.

Ae has always been fluid with what they call albums (or what they don't). Move of Ten and EP7 and Quadrange should probably be considered albums as opposed to EPs, but the only reason they aren't is because AE don't want them to be considered part of their "Studio Album discography." That's it.
>>
>>61985964
LP12 is definitely not coming
LP13 however...

but really wtf is everyone talking about, how does a substitute album even work
>>
>>61986054
I think it's an album, but what I mean is that I don't know if it's considered their OFFICIAL 12th album - in fact no one knows because they haven't really commented on it. I suppose it's an arbitrary distinction in this case and live albums are usually harder to define (usually considered a separate part of an artist's discography) so who knows.

Mostly I'm saying it's not the official 12th album because lack of promotion and the fact that it not even mentioned on Warp's Autechre page. I think when the next album is announced it will be billed an their 12th studio album. That's all I mean.
>>
>>61986192
i see yeah, it's quite invisible
but it has an album catalogue number, so someone at warp thinks it's an album
i guess they have to call it something
>>

For those interested, here's the extended version of Uviol that they played on one of their webshows. It's almost 17 minutes long(!)

also, just get more familiar with it. I have a Quaristice cd that lives in my car, and I listen to it rather a lot, and it's one of my definite favorite Autechre works, probably in part because I know it really well.
>>

https://intergalacticfm.com/the_garden.php
>>
>>61976909
I enjoy it because it combines some of their strangest stuff (Steels, fol3, WNSN, SonDEremawe) with some of their most beautiful (Altibzz, paralel Suns, Notwo, Outh9x) and dancey (The Plc, fwZE, 90101-5l-l, Tankakern, chenc9) material.

It's a pick and mix of the best sort imho.
>>
>>61975669
nah, if I recall correctly that was in 1999; around the release of EP7. Roedelius was there as well, but I don't think he ended up playing alongside them. Shame there isn't a recording.

Autechre is the greatest 21st century electronic musician because they are the only artist truly continuing the tradition of musique concrète and the origins of electronic music in a direct way (rather than simply being indebted but ignoring it). All other electronic music has been borrowing its chord progressions and rhythms from rock music, which makes no sense because those chords and rhythms were of the instrument and contemporary ideals. Musique concrete deconstructed everything Western music has been building up to and rewrote the rules for what constitutes beautiful composition. The sequence and tone of sounds became the new melody, and music was taken simultaneously in opposing directions as both raw, primal expression but also creating one of the highest musical artforms Man has heard. The parallel development of electronic instruments, recording mediums, and microphones gave a natural rise to this new form of composition which coexisted with technology as an instinctual form of expression with the new equipment. Electronic music is mainstream and universal now, but our tiny brains are incapable of understanding the possibilities the technology has opened up and we continue to write primitive rock music melodies with this new technology.

Autechre is the only artist keeping up with the technology. They are a very natural expression of what technology means for music. The obvious progression from Stockhausen, Pierre Schaeffer, etc. They have the added bonus of being relevant to the times through their hip-hop influence, a genre arguable progressing music with its novel techniques unique to new technology. Autechre is the only true electronic artist.

A good portion of Quaristice was made from the leftover live material they had store in their hardware boxes from the Untilted tour (which they then edited down).

In fact, Untilted itself pretty much came from live jamming - they original bought the hardware boxes/drum machines to go on tour after Draft, but while prepping the live set they just decided to record it as an album. AE_LIVE is a little different, but still not entirely new for them in terms or process.

Tbqh, I'm a bit autistic about Autechre and have read just about every interview they've ever done. Maybe not autistic enough though, cause I can't remember the exact interviews - but if you read some of the ones here from 2005-2008 it might get brought up. Also, I think they might mention it in the AAA.

Just thought of this. Even though I doubt you're still here:

have you ever thought about writing a book? I know there are probably other biographies or retrospectives out there. You wouldn't need to talk to them or even get their consent if you get stonewalled.

It needn't be definitive or even comprehensive. Just develop an angle you feel strongly about and you can argue convincingly placing them in the context of culture, the history of electronic music composition and technology.

Once publishers hear how you have an encyclopedic knowledge of their music and their recording and performance techniques, I don't see why there wouldn't be a good chance one of them would take you up on it.
