If the point is that music doesn't need to be sophisticated or difficult to play to gain respect, why all this nonsense about cowbells?

It's about as hard to learn to play basic chords as it is to hold a steady beat, neither is particularly deserving of respect. If you do something interesting with simple materials then good on you, but then why bother shitting on the cowbell?
