From what I understand it started in some other organ and spread to the liver so just getting a new liver wouldn't have done anything.

Cancer is terrifying.

Liver cancer is a bitch because when the symptoms start showing up it might already be too late. It's not as bad as say pancreatic cancer where when symptoms show, you're as good as dead, but by that time the cancer cells have since spread to other symptoms via lymph system starting usually with the lungs (On Blackstar you could hear Bowie have a hard time catching his breath and slightly winding himself on songs).

A transplant could have worked if they had caught it early via a routine screening but people hate going to the doctor so they wait till they feel sick and then end up dying because of it.
