Deafheaven have gotten progressively more banal with every release. Maybe Roads is a contender, but Sunbather is essentially just an hour of inoffensive atmospheric muck. It's by no means terrible, but to put it on the same level as Weakling or Liturgy or Velvet Cacoon's respective revelations is just insulting.

Noontide by Fanisk. IMO it has black metal's best lyrics, and the constant tug-of-war between Weakling-style riffing and majestic darkwave keys creates some of the most compositionally tense music in the US scene.

Yep, but as I said, symbols. The album isn't even slightly concerned with Aryan supremacy or whatever, it's just about man's propensity for destruction and subsequent rebirth. As well as black metal's natural tendency towards edginess, the Nazi party is a powerful symbol for strong and destructive empires. That's why the album starts and ends with mellow keyboards and Hitler samples. The noontide of the nazi party is over, and they're setting back into human history.

Yes they are from America.
Both members are born in America. Dagon lived some of his youth in Cali, Colombia.
The band was founded in Cali with a different line up, but they played thrash metal and sucked.
When he moved to Seattle or whatever, he met Incubus (Colombian father) and started the black metal project we know as Inquisition.
They refer to themselves as an American band as well.

Weakling by far. 10/10 album regardless of context, but it also did 90% of the gap-bridging between USDSBM and later USBM. It was probably the most influential black metal album since Filosofem.
