Hello /mu/ I've been listening to hip hop for a while and I would like to know the genre better. Could you recommend me some hip hop albums that I should listen to, mainstream classics, underground classics, or other noteworthy albums.
BTW I have listen to and loved the pic related.
well hip hop album of the year was "Jonathan Mathis - Angry Kid" which was conceptually and musically much more interesting and impressive than TPAB you should check it out. also id reccomend Section 80 and anything by Earl Sweatshirt or Eminem
3rd row: Kanye West - College Dropout; Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
4th Row - Beastie Biys - Paul's Boutique
5th Row - DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
all of the rest either have the album title or are easily found by googling the artist names
Stop this meme
Well if youve heard everyone I mentioned I would say listen to some Dr. Dre, Notorious BiG, maybe some Vince Staples. Honestly I gave you my best recs most rap isnt that artistic desu.
These guys are interesting too.
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Kanye West - The College Drop Out
Beastie boys - Paul's Boutique
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...
Though there's been some good stuff that's not on that chart.
Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste Of Rain...Why Kneel?
Binary Star - Masters Of The Universe
El-P - Fantastic Damage
Nujabes - Metaphorical Music
Masta Ace - A Long Hot Summer
Common - Be
CunninLynguists - A Piece Of Strange
Lupe Fiasco - The Cool
Sadistik - The Balancing Act
Raekwon - Only Built For Cuban Linx...Pt II
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
Big KRIT - Returnof4eva
Killer Mike - RAP Music
Armand Hammer - Race Music
Freddie Gibbs and Madlib - Piñata
Lil Ugly Mane - Oblivion Access
These are my personal favorite hip-hop from each year since 2000 minus the albums covered in that chart and minus Kendrick cuz obvious. Went form 2000 onward since that chart has mostly 90s stuff.
>Top tier as fuck bars
I swear if Lupe wasn't trying to be poppy this album could've wiped TPAB off the face of the earth. But nope, lets have poppy generic boom bap production and lets have hooks even though they sound like pop music pandering in Lupe's style of hip hop. Though to be fair if the problem was anything like his last couple albums Atlantic may possibly be at fault, in which case I would honestly rather Lupe go underground and get someone like Madlib or something to produce.
I am not him but the guy who posted directly above you. The album's good parts won't be noticed by the listener on a casual listen as it's Lupe, and if you know Lupe you know it's all about complexity and nuances in lyrics. In that manner he did phenomenal having literally triple or quadruple entendres lyrically and just spitting bars like the genius he is when it comes to spitting. Unfortunately the album does have flaws in the production and hooks. Again, if the situation as anything like the last two albums it may be Atlantic's fault, but shit if Lupe just dropped dumb hooks and picked up a producers that can also rhythmically keep up/compliment the craziness of Lupe's bars it would've been hip-hop AOTY, maybe even hip-hop AOTD.
>listening to only a few tracks
>while browsing /mu/
Not John but you're not gonna like it just stop. Also why all these memes? The lyrics are pretty good and no worse than
>DIS DICK AINT FREEEEEE
TPAB is cringe: the album yet you cucks enjoy that
Edan - Beauty And The Beat
Digable Planets - Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)
Jeru The Damaja - The Sun Rises In The East
EPMD - Strictly Business
OutKast - ATLiens
Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill
Fugees - The Score
Lootpack - Soundpiece: Da Antidote
Quasimoto - The Unseen
its an abstract concept, dont listen to the lyrics thinking its about jonathan. jesus have you never heard of experimental music before? also, he wrote the lyrics in between ages 14 and 16 but youre missing the point of the album. youre listening to a song and judging the lyrics youll never get its greatness that way.
were going to have to provide screenshots for a while until all the dumb shits on /mu/ can let this meme die
im not jonathan, i doubt op was jonathan. angry kid is an outstanding album both in terms of hip hop and psychedelic music. its production is so varied and original that i have honestly never heard anything else like it, nor have i heard a hip hop project as ambitious as it. the story, or rather, the way the tracks all connect with one another is unmatched by anyone including kendrick. angry kid is a gem, and /mu/ is blessed and should be thankful jonathan ever came on here and shared it with us. youre all just so pretentious you only listen to things critics tell you are good. hence why you like op's album. this meme needs to stop. you all just need to accept that the majority, if not all of jonathan mathis' fans are /mu/ users, and it would be ridiculous to assume that he sits on here every single day and night shilling his own album, especially when its been proven many times and ive witnessed them, that he is not doing so. ive had a conversation with four other anons about this album once before and it was great, no memes were involved and we could discuss some of the finest music of the decade. whether you like it or not, this is going down as a classic. its no where near that status yet, but it will go down as one not off hype, but because it really is that innovative, and good. but im jonathan anyways so who cares what i say right? fuck off.
>"throw ya muthafuckin hands up"
>"all around my room are pyramids"
>"don't be ignorant they're going to take away ur freedoms and stuff lol"
what the fuck makes this experimental music?
this was my post ^
ok good youre asking questions. throw your hands up isnt even the intro, its a b8 to the listener. its catchy and generic, yet lyrically is goes harder than most. honestly listen to the third verse adn tell me kendrick could ever compete with mathis. youre listening to it too critically. youre like the 80s rock dads going "kurt wasnta genius he jsut wrote random shit it isnt deep" you arent digging in. you enter assuming it isnt deep youll never understand its complexity. its the album as a whole than it so great. i cant tell you any song in particular thats "genius" or "gamechanging" i think you misunderstand why so many people love it.
im really going to half to do this baka
>the road youre on leads to no where liek minimal tours
>so dim teh lights when youre finished i diminish the source of critics
>im a cynic of sorts I spit in the torch and hand it to you
>I CANT GET HIGH JUST GET RID OF THE FLOOR
desu i dont care what you guys think but it is strange to see so many stupid people online at the same time
yet im sure you think tpab is great
it is, its very good
>i was having a conversation with 4 other anons
YEAH MORE LIKE YOU WERE HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH 4 OTHER JONATHANS YOU FUCKING FAGGOT
Don't listen to this guy OP, Angry Kid is far from good let alone AOTY, theres some nice beats but everything else is nowhere near good. No idea why it's still being posted constantly, people probably thought the shitposting wasn't shitposting and fell for it.
>implying jonathan even comes on this board anymore
>implying angry kid wasnt aoty
this meme never gets old
it's not bad or anything especially considering the kid's age; the production is actually impressive. still it's a 5.5/10 at best, like it's average, mediocre, nothing special. idk what this faggot kid is trying to achieve by spamming it here. it's been months and people have been doing nothing other than tell him to fuck off and he's still going?
he isnt. he really isnt. thats not why this album was great. just go listen to it away from your computer without having a buttplug up your ass and let it happen. youll hear it its in the details. the mixing, the production. yea the rapping isnt half bad either but its so much more than that.
>Just admit you dont get it
People try to say it isn't a meme though
>implying you can "fall for an album"
No they fell for the shitposting, thought people were being serious and listened to a bad album.
exactly. i dont believe for one second that he would continue wasting his time here if
1. he wasnt having actual fan feedback
2. it isnt him to begin with
also this post >>61731525 had a beautiful screnshot so we know at least two people like it kek
how is angry kid a meme? its a good album desu you should try getting high to it. goodnight im done here
>lyrics are so stupid
go listen to the second half of Wai Tu Long Song the #nofilter part he sounds like a young Em no lie go listen to it.
>you should try getting high to it.
This is some bullshit, if an album isn't good with a clear mind then it's just not a good movie. For example Bill & Ted is a great movie to watch high but all in all it's not great because you can't really watch it sober.
Im pretty sure Jonathan has been banned at this point so why do you guys still insist no one likes his album? I never understood why someone could work so hard at hating. Is it because youve never made anything to be proud of?
i would like to point out that i listened to it sober and fairly enjoyed it, then I listened to it high and i heard so many little details that i skipped over before. its a great album regardless of how much you meme against it.
I listened to it just as the shitposting was started before I knew it was just people shitposting. It wasn't good, there were some good beats but nothing else was worth checking out.
Because I can see how people can simply like the music (I mean, it's a bit catchy) but then there are people -- obvious shills -- who go on to say that this is "some of the finest music produced in the last decade"
What the fuck?
meh you didnt get it. thats fine just dont pretend nobody else gets it either.
>inb4 if i dont get sosmethingthere must be nothing to get
>inb4 insults that are either irrelevant or downright lies
A few of my personal favorite albums that were mainstream and fairly recent:
good kid maad city
2014 Forest Hills Drive
Because the Internet
>meh you didnt get it.
No I got it, its far from "deep", they people who are pretending it is are obvious shills. Nothing wrong with enjoying it but it is nowhere near the greatest of the year.
it is though. ive sent him an email telling him that and youd be surprised at how humble he was. if you came at me like "i really dont think this album is that good" id try to explain why i liked it. but youre all like "jonathan go away" and its so dumb and repetitive and makes the possibility of conversation impossible. of course you dont see whats so special about it so you really dont want to converse about it.
youre an obvious shill and memer stop it
ill admit some of the flows are off and i dont like every track. but they all add to the concept.
see fuck off youre meming just stop it dude stop it
DID THIS NIGGA JUST USE "XD" UNIRONICALLY HOLY FUCKING SHIT
its not a message thats deep its the way the album was made
desu if you didnt get high to it i dont expect you to get it. lots of music is better high. this album literally multiplies the high and i really cant explain it because ive never heard a hip hop album do anything like it before. its surreal. he clearly took his time with the mixing to get it just right. you cant appreciate it, that doesnt mean it isnt amazing.
yeah jonathan it's pretty clear you know damn well your album is shitty so you're tellin people to get high when listening to it so it doesn't sound as shitty
if fantano said angry kid was a 8 or 9 you would have to like it better than kendricks or lupes. it was objectively better than both of those boring albums. im getting tired or arguing with you. the other guy or guys arent really helping me out anymore and im tired im not posting after this.
this sums up everything i can think to say.
sorry if you thought i was shitposting i wasnt. that being said i hated tpab and t&t we probably just have different taste.
I listened to the album hoping for the best, it just wasn't good.
Not a chance, fantano gave Travis Scotts album a high rating and i fucking hate travis scott, i make my own opinions.
the only person who can relate to it is mathis. like he told me himself that it's important to him because of how long he's worked on it and how it serves as a "time capsule" for him. he told me this personally.
Jonathan, the average listener won't be able to "get" your music
2Pac-Me against the World, All Eyez On Me
The Notorious BIG- Ready To Die, Life After Death
N.W.A-Straight Outta Compton, 100 Miles and Runnin, Niggaz4Life
The D.O.C- No One Can Do it Better
Ice Cube- AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, Death Certificate
Dr. Dre- The Chronic
Snoop Dogg- Doggystyle
Tha Dogg Pound- Dogg Food

Eazy-E- Eazy Duz It
Mos Def- Black on Both Sides
Scarface- The Diary
Run D.M.C- Run D.M.C
Eric B & Rakim- Paid in Full
Wu Tang Clan- 36 Chambers
angry kid is really.. eccentric and almost genius in a way, but it isnt in an accessible way or even an obvious one. its definetely jsut as ambitious as mbdtf and tpab and probably moreso, but it has a niche and the harsh truth is that most people wont fall under that niche. it wasnt bad though very nice production and some good raps too.
Oddisee- The Good Fight
DJ Soko- Domino Effect
Finale- Odds & Ends
Kendrick Lamar- TPAB
¡Mayday!- Future Vintage
Grandeur- Apollo Brown
All Love Lost- Joe Budden
The Night Took Us in Like Family- L'Orange and Jerimiah Jae

So the Flies Don't Come- Milo
Time and Materials- Cavanaugh
Fuck The Hype- Nolan The Ninja
DBD- Pusha T
Music for My Friends- Skyzoo
>boogiemonsters - riders of the storm: the underwater album
i agree with you but it is waaaaaaaaay more ambitious tahtn kanye could ever dream of being. jonathan/s ambition is equivilant to what kanye THINKS his ambition is.
do you even like psychedelic rap? if not it really isnt your place to say if hes trash or not.
Not bad, I've been meaning to listen to So the Flie Don't Come and The Good Fight but just haven't been bothered yet. Not really into Logic though, don't hate him but just never been able to get into his music.
ICP arent gamechanging in any way though, nor are they artistic
This, Angry Kid sounds like what Kanye would make if he was actually talented and could pull off his grandiose ideas. Except Jonathan was cooler about it.
>ICP arent gamechanging
Neither is Jonathan Mathis, few people have heard of him outside of /mu/ from what I've seen and the only reason people here no him is because of the constant shilling.
Define shilling. I post it whenever I see a AOTY thread. I also post it is /psych/ threads because it is so gamechanging people just need to hear it. And you just made the strongest point for why Jonathan doesnt jsut stay here and shill, why would he do taht when he should be furthering his career. Sitting on his computer on a japanese image board would be a pathetic waste of time. I do it, but Im not an artist, and I dont spend all day on here.
The constant posting on pretty much every rap related thread and some non-rap related thread, and the fact that generally is just obvious they're doing it to shit-post. I've got no problem with people who enjoy it but if people are gonna post it in every rap related threads they're obviously shilling. This has become the new Barter 6, people posted that shit in every thread for a while and now thats died down Angry Kid is taking over.
Hell no. People posting barter 6 are shitposting. If its in a rap thread, its genuine. Trust me, i post it all the time. But never in random threads like it was months ago. I dont think that type of shilling happens anymore, at least i havent seen it, and i dont contribute to it. I think its aoty though, honestly. Feel free to disagree, just dont call me "John" because of some meme.
>People posting barter 6 are shitposting.
Thats exactly how we feel about Angry Kid.
>dont call me "John" because of some meme.
I havent done that shit yet, a couple of months ago he was definitely shilling the fuck out of the album and probably still does occasionally.
What exactly has it changed? absolutely nothing, hardly anyone knows about the album. If in a decades time it becomes a cult classic that will be a different story but at this point in time it hasn't done shit.
>a couple of months ago he was definitely shilling the fuck out of the album and probably still does occasionally.
its possible but Angry Kid is a great album conceptually, if you disagree i recommend you listen again.
>habe dank ready
but really its awsome to get high to really takes you on a trip in my experience
i think something can be gamechanging although its underground. like when illmatic dropped it was gamechanging, regardless of the fact no one had heard it yet. to the people who had, they recognized its... nevermind. sorry for the confusion.
I get what you're saying but an album isn't gamechanging until it's changed the game in some way. In the future the album could change the game however unlikely, then it would be considered gamechaning but at this point in time it hasn't done anything
