Video game music good enough to have orchestras tour that shit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpolz4V2Ez4
>>
http://games.slashdot.org/story/15/10/14/141247/video-game-music-is-saving-the-symphony-orchestra
>As music distribution has flourished, the popularity of live performances in certain genres has begun to wane. Symphony orchestra attendance has been dropping for years. A new report says ticket sales have dropped by 2.8% annually for the past decade. The downward trend has caused many performing groups to experiment with ways to appeal more to modern audiences. One way they're finding success is by including music from video games. "Orchestral videogame concerts first gained a following in Japan in the mid-1980s and spread to parts of Europe in the early 2000s. They began appearing regularly in pops repertoires in the U.S. about a decade ago as orchestras sought younger, more diverse audiences. Unlike classical-music performances, videogame shows feature arrangements that blend looping tracks of music designed to match various moments in a game, such as a slow, eerie medley of piano, percussion and string as the videogame character navigates a castle dungeon. ... The story of The Legend of Zelda isn't a far cry from such classics as Mozart's The Magic Flute. Both tales involve a brave fellow in a quest to rescue a damsel from a villain's clutches

No doubt a lot of people are unhappy about this, since they think video game music is necessarily bad because video games are children's toys or low culture mass market garbage or something like that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBL8Zyp7n4I

Anime music often gets the same treatment for the same reasons.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hstbdf-vOo4

"Classical music" seems like a dead thing today, something that was set in stone a century or more ago and should never be touched again by anyone. I'm sure that's exactly what those composers would have wanted...

Cellist here.

We want money making music.
The gamers are idiots that think video games are art.
Let us make (easy?) money.

Just stuffy westerners getting pissed because the Japs are blowing them the fuck out at their own game. It happened with cars, then consumer electronics, robotics, ect, now this.

go to /v/ to discuss that

>>61687139
music is art, not video games.

But the public in those shows go to play the video game mentally while here the music, none of them really care about the music.
>>
>>61687231
The music is why they are there. Tons of people listen to VGM outside of the games, including music belonging to games they haven't played, or games they didn't like.
>>
>>61686811
in reality, video game and anime music are several degrees of sophistication below even the basic classics of the academic repertoire

however it seems to be the only music that gamers and otaku are interested in and thus it does serve in keeping symphonies on life support outside the coffers of rich donors and government grants

the performances should shoehorn in some real music each time in an attempt to save the nerds from themselves - reciprocity

go to concert of video game music and you will see that music is secondary.

Hey, I will not lie you, I like all that thing, it is fun. But, like I said, music is secondary.

>>61687326
>in reality, video game and anime music are several degrees of sophistication below even the basic classics of the academic repertoire
Yeah, because they don't have a serious cultural institution full of serious people backing them up in a very serious manner.

Composers who work on games and anime are actually out there making music every day and people are listening to it out of genuine enjoyment. Meanwhile proponents of classical music like you are just endlessly circle-jerking over centuries old music in the most elitist way possible, and you don't even really enjoy it. Then you wonder why nobody wants to go to classical concerts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw19XDSB0ZI

>>61687404
It's not secondary, and why would anyone go to a concert if they weren't interested in the music? They could just stay home and play the game if that's all they cared about.

Again: people listen to VGM in and of itself. Actually a particularly good example is the Touhou series, because many of its fan don't play the games at all. Its music is extremely popular.
>>
>>61687529
>why would anyone go to a concert if they weren't interested in the music?
It is like a One Directon concert. The girls like the music, but they like a lot more the guys.

Here, it is the same. Neckbeards like music of the video games, but they want to live that video game.

It is fun, but the way. Except the part when cosplayers dance in the scenary.

It has nothing to do with "living" the game. This is just some bizarre delusion of yours.

Out of the games I posted in >>61687139, I have only played one (FFVI). I still listen to the music. And then there's what I just said about many people listening to Touhou music even though they don't play the games.
>>
>>61688408
ok dude.

I played in some of those concerts, I can tell you what I see.
I have nothing against it! That I said, I like them. Not a great musical experience, but I could pay the bills and play music!
>>
>>61688663
I'm sure mental patients could also tell us what they see, but so what?

You are just biased against video games to an extreme degree.

Yes, I hate videogames.

Except Jet Set Radio.

Goddamn! That game is fucking great. I miss my DC...

Video game music is 90% awful. there's no misconception about any of it. The musicians who play it even say so.
>>
>>61686970
Well for that you would have to provide an example of an artful video game.
I can't think of a single video game I would consider as "Art" above "entertainment."

Go on, name one.

The only good vidya composers I have heard are:

Jeremy Soule
Austin Wintory

There's lots of of good video game music. You are just making this assumption/judgment because you look down on video games, so you think the music has to be bad too.

>>
>>61689243
>I've heard half of those, and they were all shit.
Yeah yeah yeah. You're assuming/judging because of an extreme bias against video games. Or because you think music doesn't get good until at least a century has passed and some people in academia have given it their approval. Let me guess: you also think movies and TV can't have any good music?
>>
>>61689243
I am 36 (and I play cello professionally)

But, hey! Maybe you are more mature than me, my wife says that I am a child all the time
>>
>>61689309
No, I've listened to the music and it's shit.
Film music is largely uninteresting too but still miles above the drek that's put into video games.

Fun fact: have you ever noticed how EVERY video game reviewer, for nearly EVERY game, says "THE SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING!" It's because they know fucking nothing about music

Like you fucking teenagers

No, you are either biased or pretentious.

>Fun fact: have you ever noticed how EVERY video game reviewer, for nearly EVERY game, says "THE SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING!" It's because they know fucking nothing about music
I don't know or care what reviewers have to say about music, but I can see that you place a lot of importance on what other people think about music. I just listen to it.
