I'd say the beatles are definitely the most significant and influential. They were and are so popular its practically impossible to find a band or artist that isn't influenced by them to some degree. They also did a great job of bringing musical trends, psychedelic or otherwise into the mainstream.

If I were to pick a BEST band ever it would be swans/gira though. They have genre-defining and pioneering albums in so many different styles of music over so many years and their output is consistently fantastic
